I've gone cold turkey on Xanax without issue. Now, I may not be unconscious for 6-7 hours after laying down to sleep, but I feel as rested on 4 hours of sleep without them as I do with 6 hours of unconsciousness on Xanax. PS - I started with Dalmane (Flurazepam) back in my late 20s, and I have found nothing left me as side effect free. They have tried to replace it with Temazepam instead (the side effect list was identical) but they failed to do the job for me (30mg doses per night). I've also used Ambien and Ambien XR sucessfully but had some side effects. The side effects of 1--2mg of Xanax are tremendous. I wake feeling drunk and my balance is shot. Not going to use them anymore, you have helped me with your advice Dr, thank you. OH, is there an easy way to help an older person sleep? Give them an orgasm. That really helps. Keep up the good work doc!

I am so thankful for your advice as I am going to see my primary care Dr next week, and I am really sure that I do have the beginning or maybe close to middle stages of Dementia. I am 68 and have been having episodes for almost 1 year, I see my Dr. In 2 weeks. I thank God that I saw you on my phone, you gave me a lot of insight into Dementia. In this last year my brain has gone down as far as remembering almost anything. I do have times where it just takes a few minutes for it to come to me, I also have times when it's just NOT THERE. I did write down as much as I could , you were very informative and I THANK YOU for being someone who really CARES to enlighten people about this terrible subject. I don't understand why there are so MANY people getting this terrible thing . I don't remember ever hearing about Dementia until 10 maybe 15 years ago. May GOD be with us all. I truly thank you for sharing all of your information on this subject. Mitzi Lott

Chlesterol lowering meds like Statins too should be added to this list.

I address statins in the written article: betterhealthwhileaging.net/medications-to-avoid-if-worried-about-memory/
They are certainly prescribed more often than necessary, but they don't consistently slow the brain and worsen memory the way the medications in the video do. For this reason, geriatricians don't get amped up about statins.

@@BetterHealthWhileAging I am on day 40 of titrating off Gabapentin. Now THERE’S a drug that is handed out like candy. I have PD so neurologist first prescribed 100mg 3X per day for anxiety and irritation. I have a “pinched nerve” in L5 so an ortho put me on 1,800mg per day for pain relief because I refuse surgery. Parkinson’s gives me enough cognitive issues and trouble with walking. Getting OFF this drug is just horrible. But when I am done with Gabapentin I will have gone from 6 meds to 2. Carbidopa/Levodopa for the PD motor symptoms and Mirtazapine (30mg once a day) at bedtime because the PD causes such horrible sleep disruption. I exercise so much my neighbor thinks I’m training for Ironman. I’m 70 and weigh 162 pounds and watch what I eat. I appreciate your videos! thank you

Thank you for what you are doing. My husband is blind, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and dementia with Lewy body. I’ve had two back surgeries and have been taking care of him for a year by myself. I’ve also had 2 back surgeries and I’m 81. I wake up every morning around 4:30 or 5 am and go in my living room to pray and I can’t stop sobbing.. we’ve been together for 64 yrs and it’s like I’m grieving. I’m not getting near enough sleep. Take a tiny piece of Ativan the dr. Gave me yrs ago, but never increased it. Since I’ve watched this, I will surely stop it and take the less than 1/2 every other night and my dr also put me on Zoplicone for sleeping but it’s not working. How do I get sleep. I’m about to break with the pain in my back, but I have to keep going. You have a calming voice. Don’t stop with what you are doing. God bless you. God only can get me thro this nightmare. Thank you

Melatonin helps you sleep. The most common mistake in taking them is taking too small a dose. They are NOT a medicine, they are a supplement available at your local grocery store or health food store. I take two 3 mg tabs (6 mg total) an hour before bed. RE your work helping your husband: look into Home Health Care assistance through Department of Human Services. It is free to people on medicaid/medicare and disability which you surely qualify for. You will be able to interview several qualified people to make sure your personalities combine well and will be given a certain number of hours per week when this person comes to your home to assist you/clean your home/care for your husband as you require.

I have shared this information with my 84 year old mother, her friends, and our octogenarian neighbors. My mother in law died 16 months ago from complications related to Alzheimers. Unknown to us, my mother in laws' geriatrician (who is a friend of our family) had advised her to add Tylenol PM (acetaminophen & diphenhydramine) to her evening medications because she was having difficulty falling asleep at night (following the passing of her husband). She took this over the counter medication every evening, for 14-16 months before she began having difficulties with problem solving, impulse control, and memory. This information is priceless; thank you for sharing.

I asked the pharmacist for a taper schedule for the benzo I had been on for years (Xanax), it's long and slow, and I had to get off caffeine and take long walks in the mornings to reset my circadian rhythm. I'm 59. A 5mg melatonin at night works just as well as the benzo did, now. It took almost a year to get off of the X and Wellbutrin.

Dr. Kernison. I salute you as a colleague in the profession medicine for daring to speak out . For years I have been a voice in the wilderness of the poly pharmacy driven by the dollar . Especially precisely what you are high lighting here
I am dismayed by the symptomatic treatment of symptoms. To compound this over 40 % of consultations for all ages are iatrogenic .
Understandably this has caused a backlash in many patients admittedly somewhat hysterical in a small minority driving them to seek alternative medics and medicine . This in itself is unregulated and often hazardous or utterly useless.
Perspective for verifiable information has been inundated by rendering pharmacists virtually impotent by ridiculous regulations.
I am very impressed very admiring of your outstanding deductive logic and factual delivery.
The current conspiracy is to suppress evidence of the billion dollar industry of overdosing statins and its effect on cognition especially on geriatrics .
I am also appalled how dosages generally are NOT adjusted for geriatrics , body weight, etc . .
Horses for courses I say but looks like the mules are in charge.

Zolpidem is not a benzo and I think it would be akin to a crime to not allow a sleepless senior to use it. If it is affecting balance and thinking, maybe the senior is getting too high a dose. Also, if you're "discontinuing" it in an older adult who has been benefitting from zolpidem, you do know it will cause withdrawal symptoms along with the sleeplessness again?

When I was put on a statin at age 51, I soon started having severe memory problems. I was forgetting everyday words and having trouble communicating. One day I was driving and my passenger told me I was on the left-hand side of the road. I didn't even know it! I realized it was the drug and stopped taking it. It took a couple of months to return to normal. I then tried a different statin, and I started tripping and falling when I never had before. Went off it and returned to normal. I tried one more and it messed with my muscles. I refused to ever again take another statin.

Doctors and nurses perform valuable services to societies, but most people with insurance use the insurance way too often for minor or unnecessary things because they figure "Well I'm paying for the insurance, so I might as well use it. Otherwise I'm wasting money." Then, besides the insurance company problem there is the greed problem within big pharma and those they affect.
Learning to avoid illnesses and accidents is the smartest thing anyone can devote time to. Learn the body and its functions and how to stay healthy, especially through exercise and proper nutrition. An ounce of prevention.....

Thank you Dr Kernisan for your educational video and I quite agree with the side effects of the antipsychotic medication and the benzodiazepine. Every doctor should evaluate the benefits and harms of medical treatment before prescribing any medication. You talk about "trying the other things" and could you please specify what other alternative things are available or other alternative medications, for example in an acute situation where the patient is agitated or expressing suicidal thoughts.

After laying down and nose breathing:
1 - I breath in ten moderate breaths
2 - mentally count ten seconds
3 - expel ten moderate breaths
4 - mentally count to ten seconds
I repeat these four steps ten times and upon finishing, I take two deep breaths.

Hi there. Very low carb . My mom was eating mostly vegetables, a little tuna, some fruit lots of salads and pretzels . Anyway she had gotten so hateful and paranoid that my son started taking her groceries during covid because I couldn't stand her anymore. I slowly started getting her more Eggs and different kinds of meat.
I got her those proteins packs that had meat and cheese in them instead of her pretzels and fruit. Well when my son moved it was back to me dropping off her food. She wasn't as hateful and didn't seem paranoid. Well I messed up and around the holidays gave her more" treats" candy's and bread so I started to see she had only been eating that. And it showed. She was hateful, she was extremely paranoid. Talking about the people in her apartment building. It was crazy. So back to no junk. But that was hard because now she had a taste of it, and it was, you didn't bring me anything good Barbara! Super hateful. So it's getting better but I have to do things slow or say they didn't have something. She doesn't care if she is hateful she just want junk. 😂 But I truly thought I was going to have to put her in a home. No body would deal with her. And they still don't because she was so mean. But it wasn't Dimensia it was all that sugar all those carbs. I hope you find this useful. It is truly amazing how food changes our behavior. Oh, she is 78yrs old so it started when she was 74. I do give her b-1, Magnesium, and good multi vitamin because I believe her Blood Pressure medicine was making her dizzy and she was falling down. She's still a little dizzy but doesn't fall any more. Good luck to you.

Hello, This is good information for older folks and their families. Thank you! At age 84, I learned through classes that a brief daily practice of deep breathing helps me relax and reduces my anxiety, My favorite is a lengthier exhale following a normal inhale. After 5 times, I start to feel myself again. I do this every day. Also, certain simple exercises aimed at building up one's nitric oxide 2 or 3 times a day help builds energy. I hope that is helpful to some who may have not trained in mind-body work.

It would be useful to see probabilities. For example example: what % of older adults get dementia, and how much the use of benzodiazepines increases the risk of dementia. Is it 5, 10 or 500 percent. As a patient, I would prefer to know the probable impacts when deciding whether to take them or not.
