@@1mikon That’s alright. I actually think fish and just a tiny bit of red meat, like twice or once a week, is fine. Same goes for eggs. 3 times a week should be fine. However, absolutely no dairy. The rest you can just plug into chronometer and see what nutrients you need. I eat a shit ton of variety of food. When I started out, I mistakenly tried to meet the RDA of every vitamin and mineral, but that’s unnatural. I now learned that we are supposed to get those nutrients over many days from a wide variety of whole food sources. Also, I believe eating my diet and occasionally having red meat/eggs will result in a normal serum cholesterol level. I have yet to test this hypothesis, but I will test my serum cholesterol level in about a year. The problem with people who eat eggs and other high cholesterol foods is that they eat it too often and don’t have a wide variety of healthy whole foods, many of which have been shown to lower cholesterol like flax seeds (which I also eat regularly).

Very useful info. I was busy taking all sorts of notes. It was good to get answers on a wide range of foods as to whether they are really suitable or not. Keep up the good work of informing and educating people around the world. I'm based in Australia and have been a fan of PCRM for years.
The very name includes the key thing: responsible medicine. It's so important to counter all the misinformation being spread by ignorant consumers and vested interests who only want to protect and increase profits, not matter how much their products damage the health of consumers. So it's important to speak up against all the BS spread about food, mostly by people who want to protect the status quo.
As recently as 400 years ago, most people believed the world was flat, and anyone saying otherwise risked being burned as a heretic. When Galileo Galilei tried to get certain people to have a look through his telescope, they refused to do that because they wanted to hang on to their false beliefs.
    To quote Galilei,
"I wish that we might laugh at the remarkable stupidity of the common herd. What do you have to say about... [people] who... do not want to look at either the planets, the moon or the telescope, even though I have freely and deliberately offered them the opportunity a thousand times? Truly ...these philosophers shut their eyes to the light of truth."
And so do opponents of a plant based diet continue to shut their eyes to the truth, because the truth threatens their world view and beliefs. But I believe that thanks to the work of researchers, PCRM and other pioneers, in another generation or two there will be a lot more acceptance of vegan diets. Just like people now accept that Galileo Galilei was right all along, because he actually LOOKED at the evidence, in his case the view through his telescope.

After 28 months on WFPBSOS (30 gr fat - ground flaxseed, a brazil nut, walnuts occasionally) my TC went from over 220 to 195, LDL from over 140 to 115, but TG from below 100 to 170. My weight down from 68 kg to 59 kg, 170 cm. My HbA1c down from 5.8% to 5.1%. But most importantly my BP went down from 140/90 to 105/70 which is the reason I changed diet. It took 18 months to stop BP pills and get to 110/70. I was low carb Paelo-ish OMAD for about 10 years before that. Lipids just will not go down further. Initially they went down more but then bounced back albeit to a lower level. More or less 10 points down for every 100 mgr of diet cholesterol. Are their studies about the effect of various levels of cholesterol on WFPBSOS diet, in the absence of animal foods and fats? Dr Klaper mentioned sometthing about this when discussing complaints of strict long term WFPBSOS dieters having theit TC stuck around 200. Relatively higher cholesterol but less inflammatory conditions.

I wonder what made your triglyceride level go UP like that? I do a version of Keto and my triglyceride level keeps getting better! It was 72 and last blood work had dropped to 47! My HDL was 70 and my LDL was 112. I am not worried a drop about my LDL because truly what matters is the Ratio!😉 I would love to lower my BP though! I take 10 mgs of Lisinoprel which isn't that much but without it my BP will start climbing much too high. An idea for a podcast for you, Chuck. You are creative so I believe you could ‘dish’ this topic up in a way that creates attention and interest. As a clinician scientist who specializes in non-drug and non-surgical health care, my focus has been population based nutrition, I.e., vegan nutrition. PCRM has been an outstanding source; an organization that I promote globally. Perhaps most of your listeners are not as tuned into world health, however we as like minds need to lean on the World Health Organization (WHO). Being a baby boomer and now an academic in health care, I have had trust in our institutions. This past year, one voice (Italian Ambassador to the Assembly) in the WHO Assembly vetoed WHO’s advocacy of plant-based nutrition. This is truly a sacrilege and flies in the face of science and turning the tide on nutrition-related non-communicable diseases. Shortsightedly, he simply argued that closing down factory farming would reduce jobs and the Assembly went along with it. This is unacceptable. We need to take a stand. Please enable your following to lean on our national representatives to the WHO to voice our concerns. The WHO professes to value and be guided by ‘health for all’ yet it has lost its way and its initiatives appear more guided my vested interests than evidence.
    Professor-Elizabeth

I would recommend to listen to the video about cholesterol by Eckberg. It's not the cholesterol that matters but the ratio with triglycerides and HDL. You get those down by going keto and low carbs. That's how I reversed insulin resistance.

Plants are not for humans; agriculture came around 10,000 years ago, and while we have been here for millions of years, the only foods we are allowed to eat are EGG AND MEAT. just a cholesterol number does not mean ANYTHING!! the only indicator of heart attack is Triglyceride to HDL ratio. Do yourself a favor and ask your doctor to order an advanced lipid panel test ( assuming your doctor knows what this is), if your doctor refuses to order, buy it online, it's kinda pricy, and only then, you will understand if your 300 or 400 cholesterol is safe or not!! my LDL cholesterol is over 200, and my total cholesterol is over 300, but my advanced lipid panel results showed no danger whatsoever. Don't be fooled by traditional medicine. Stay away from Statins, vegetable oils, and carbs.

    Thank you for your input.
I am confused though. The body makes 3,000 mg of cholesterol per day: how can one egg (186 mg) make any difference? In fact, say most TH-cam contributors, the benefit of eggs far outweighs any problem.
You also say “go low on oils”.
Surely you mean only vegetable cooking oils? Olive oil is supposed to be something of a super food, included in the Mediterranean diet which results in very low rates of heart disease.

I commented this above... before you get "rid of fats", you might want to research some of the things I said ( don`t take it from me. ).... if what you (the doctor here...) suggest is true, how come that in two of the worlds "blue zones" (Sardinia, Italy, Ikaria, Greece) the population eats loads of dairy ( goat cheese etc) consumes a bottle of olive oil a week per person(!) And also:
As a matter of fact in NONE of the blue zones the typical diet is strictly vegan: Still in the "blue zones" there is more people that live to be 100 years old in good health ...in spite of their "deadly" diet ...( or could I suggest: BECAUSE of their diet?)
And if cholesterol levels are the one and only or at least one of the most important factors for heart disease, answer me this question, please:
How come people in France who have the same high cholesterol levels as is typical for the US population (or even higher in places) -still they suffer significantly less strokes and heart attacks than in the US..
How come , if what you say is true?
I NEVER HEAR answers about that from vegans. Never.
And I won`t get an answer here either.
      That`s for sure.

I was doing the carnivore diet for the last 4 months and my cholesterol went from 200 to 608. My LDL is now at 473. I think I'm living proof that eating cholesterol raises cholesterol. Time to go back to eating my veggies again and get this cholesterol under control. Its crazy that in the carnivore community everyone says this is fine. I just wish everything wasn't so contradicting. It's so confusing but it's clear to me a high fat keto/carnivore diet isn't for me. What are your thoughts about keto and carnivore diets? I am a 67 year old female and just got cholesterol checked total is 327. Ldl 230. I refuse statins at my age. What alternatives are there? And my doctor will not do the particle test to see the size of the particles for me. Why?

Pick another doctor to do the particle test. It's important.

My TC is 284; HDL 109, LDL 166. My triglycerides are 45. I really want to get my TC down. My last (August 2023) A1C tested at 5.7. I bought and read your book, Reversing Diabetes. I've been following your plant based diet recommendations, but I have a concern in that my last bone scan shows osteoporosis. I wonder if I need some animal protein for my bone health. I walk two miles every day and I lift weights 4 - 5 days a week, which I have done for years. I'm not overweight (125 lbs. - 5'5"). I'm really working to get the A1C down. I have not eaten any added sugars for several years. Age seems to exacerbate my scores.

Sadly, I have to start a statin at 64 years old despite the fact I eat healthy and a good weight......... my non HDL Cholesterol is 235 and doctor's staff told me high risk of death in 10 years............ my son is a doctor and discussed all cholesterol problems with me and statins are fine to take and will improve my life expectancy (Crestor) Chol HDL ratio is 6.0 ---- HDL is 47 and son told me to get to cardiologist to have artery duplex ultrsound to check plaque as my cholesterol has been higher for years and I believe it is a combo of stress and genetics

    • @jeanne819

I never started a statin as others said I need to do. I met with the doctor yesterday for a physical exam and insisted on getting an advanced lipid panel which shows the two LDL particle sizes and percentages of each - small dense is bad and large buoyant is good and it’s important to know this specific additional information as it will reflect the true picture of what’s going on. She refused to give me this blood test multiple times and then said they don’t offer that test in this large medical group in NY!! She said to do a calcium score and that will show if any plaque on the arteries which indicates high cholesterol - I educated myself years ago about calcium score and met with a cardiologist as I was having chest pain and told him I wanted a calcium score (he failed to offer it) so will repeat that. I met with my doctor for a physical exam yesterday and she didn’t even look in my mouth for any cancer related bumps or issues. Time to find a new doctor ….

Dont go on the statins. Find a nutritionist. Statins have grave side effects. Your son is trained to tell you what he did. He loves you and means well. He does not want his mom to die.

@@thelinkeducationalsupports2949 Thanks so much for responding- I was in the ER last week heart. I eat very very healthy, great weight, but I have high stress levels and despite being calm last Sunday, I had the most intense chest pressure of my entire life in this world it was horrifying I thought I was going to die despite my belief I will live to over 100! I was in ER several hours heart rate fluctuating crazily up and down no heart attack further testing will be necessary at the cardiologist. They put me on beta blocker script meant for ongoing problem heart not taking it! They told me I have high levels of TSH and could have hypothyroidism affecting my high cholesterol so endocrinologist appt - I’m not going on those rotten statins - I’ll be doing intense lifestyle changes including yoga running every day etc. I’m a good weight but the stress is doing a number on me (daily meditations mindfulness) so likely will sell the house and move away…

@@jeanne819 Oh my, they say that high stress can rob a man of a full life. Jeanne, I don't practice mindfulness or yoga, but I do practice thankfulness. At the end of each of my days I celebrate what I do possess and all of those precious lives I encountered that day and I go to sleep. Unlike you, I am in search of a home. I don't own one, but I am expectant. Can we find an excellent nutritionist for you who also happens to be a medical physician? You know, one who will not use meds except in an emmergency? Let me know how your health improves. I am going to whisper a prayer for you this evening. And incidentally, I am not casual about what I am saying. Relax, say to yourself, some things I just cannot change. I am wise to acknowledge that and let some things go. You have to or your excellent eating habits would be in vain. Now we dont want that do we?

Thank you for your thoughtful response I’m reading a year later. I received latest bloodwork results and my cholesterol is still too high and doctor office left 4 voicemails while I was in Europe on a family trip and upon returning home, nurse told me I must go on a statin and I’m not doing this. I’m 66 now and realize life is short and every moment counts, and I will take your advice and locate a doctor who also cares about nutrition and holistic approach. I’m on Medicare now and it took me 2 years to find a new doctor who is a primary care. My doctor of many years wouldn’t accept my insurance. I had a calcium score last year and I’m at 6 percent - it was 0 before that so will do this again and also meet with a cardiologist who actually cares about patients on Medicare and Medicaid in NY- I was in Croatia first time life and climbed massive steps miles every day and my heart was great for 12 days so it’s likely the stress of living alone and dealing with an extremely toxic family member - thanks again for caring and responding, and have a wonderful day ❤

Exactly opposite of what Dr. Neal said worked for me. With 95% vegetarian for the whole life+10000 steps/day walking, at 48yrs age my TG was 270, LDL 74, HDL 41, TC 169 (TG/HDL=6.6) so took statin for 6yrs. It used to give frequent musle pains. Then 2yrs back started keto (thanks to Dr. Berg, Dr. Berry, Dr. Nadir Ali) & statin stopped. Now TG 45 (big down), LDL 250 (big up), HDL 59 (up), TC 339 (up) + feeling healthiest ever at 56yrs. TG/HDL is 0.8. As per Dr. Ali, TG is the problem, not cholesterol.

My LDL shot up to almost 400 after I did KETO 😂 I felt so healthy though. I started to doubt about how relevant that LDL is dangerous to heart disease?

Eggs DO raise the Bad cholesterol and triglycerides! I am 100% sure because that was the only animal product that I ate and my LDL and triglycerides went up!
