Good eye for spotting the holiday cactus. It belongs to my mum-in-law. She has a lot of those in her collection (as well as some epiphytes, which I have no idea what colours she has).

For the cleanest cuts I've had on thick-stemmed beheadings, I save my broken guitar strings, clean them up with a kitchen sponge sprayed with iso alcohol, and use them to garrotte the stems. The unwound higher register strings E, B, and G depending on if the G is wound or not. The wound strings have lots of grooves for bacteria and fungi to hide in, so don't use those. Much easier than trying to get a straight clean cut with a bladed tool.

I've learn a lot from your videos as newbie in the succulent & cacti world - I live in hot humid tropical weather in Indonesia (29 - 34 degC all the time) - and unfortunately some of my echeverias and hawortias are getting root and stem rot, despite of my routine check and 2 weeks period between watering (or whenever the soil has been completely dried).... Do you have any resources for the tropical succulents & cacti care 101? Appreciate it, man!

Hi Naomi, and hello Indonesia! Yeah I know how the weather feels having lived in the Philippines for most of my life. You will probably want to try a more gritty medium. Try a mix that has a lot less soil by volume, and increase the percentage of pebbles/scoria/pumice. This way your medium will hold less water (though this means that you will have to water a bit more often).

Great video Chuck! I had been chopping heads left right and centre not paying attention to their dormant seasons 😱 I wondered why my echys were thriving but my graptos were hating it.. oops 😬 I have a question, what are you going to do with the flower stalks, will you harvest the seeds? I’ve just started growing Echeveria from seed and I’ve surprisingly been successful. I’m still very new at it though. Thanks, Amy 😄

Hi Amy! Great job with the seeds! I'm struggling with mine, but mainly because I haven't been spending enough time checking on them ever since we had our 2nd child. I will not try with these flower stalks I just chopped since we are heading into winter so I will wait until the end of winter when we are heading into spring. That might be a better time to try from seed again.

I have a question about planting succulents outside. I live in southern California in the High Desert. Temperatures get down to 16° in the winter and it hits 115° in the summer. I know I will need to provide shade for them. But will they freeze and die in the winter? That's my fear. Tia

Hi Mechelle, it mainly depends on what type of plants you have. Echeverias in general can survive all the way down to -5°C (23°F) without protection. Below that, the damage is extensive - the water in their leaves and stalk will freeze and make the plant burst.
There are other plants that can tolerate colder temperatures without protection such as sempervivums (and maybe haworthia?) I'm sure there are other genus that can take it as well, but I can't tell you first-hand since my climate is an equivalent of Zone 10b, so we don't usually go below freezing temperatures. At most, all we get is frost. No snow.

Hi, I want to know if I can chop a Graptoveria while it's still blooming. The bottom part is in really bad shape but the top floret is really beautiful with 3 blooming shoots. Will I hurt it if I cut it? Looking forward to your advise. BTW it is currently in the low 100 degrees F here in the desert and wondering if it's a good idea to do it now.

Perfectly fine to chop. If you remove the flowers, all of the energy will be focused on regrowing roots. I would definitely recommend removing the flowers. Also heat can be a problem so you'll want to keep them in bright shade. Surely it is less than 100°F in the shade.
