I have a suggestion for an improvement below. Instead of using 2 milk containers of the same size, use a Tropicana 52 oz OJ container. If you use a pair of pliers to crimp or "smooth out" the plastic threads of the milk container, you can force the milk container pretty far, up, inside the Tropicana container very snugly. (Just work the pliers around the entire opening in a consistent manner.) Then drill a hole through the neck of the attached bottles and insert a screw, to make sure they can not be separated. Then you don't need to use tape, to hold the bottles together. I used a 2" laminated, outside, deck screw for this. I would probably use the Tropicana container for the top. I made one of these, thanks to you! One thing I learned: my SLFs had a hard time making it up through the plastic funnel. Too slippery, I guess! So I had to staple a dowel onto the spine that passed up through the mouth of the funnel. I think it would also be ok if you just pushed the mesh up into the mouth further than I did, or glue a little mesh bridge they can climb up. :-) There were 4 SLFs climbing the mesh before I even finished installing it!! It really works.
I went to the dollar store and bought a 10 pack of the Cleaning pads people use to wash dishes. They come in assorted colors at the dollar store . I used a couple of electrical ties to hold them in place, on the inside of the Tropicana OJ bottle I used for the top. I may put a small piece in the neck of the bottles if I see they are having a hard time climbing through the 2 bottles. Bill Zardus 2020-10-23 Delaware County, PA
I thank you for giving me inspiration for making my own trap. If you really wanna fill that thing up quickly spray the tree with a powerful hose and knock them down. They almost always start from the bottom and attempt the climb again. I’ve been filling a gallon ziplock daily.
If you get this trap put up EARLY, it seems having them at a lower height causes flys arriving later, to only go as high as the flys already trapped. This makes sense, since they are coming together to mate. So a trap that captures them alive and holds them in place, will be much more effective than a trap that would kill them instantly. At least that it what I am observing after watching them swarm our oak tree for a week. WRZ 2020-10-08
@@Beko610812 Yeah I am noticing they are not active at night but they seem to swarm our oak tree in greater numbers in the hour or so before it gets dark. I try and be outside for that and then I get rid of all the dead ones in the morning.
Another question (sorry). Thanks for the video by the way. I watched it a few times but I did not see the part where you would describe how to attach the 32" of bendable wire to the screen and in such a way as to keep the screening open all around the circumference of the tree and keep the 2 pieces of wood propped open.
My staple gun would not penetrate the bark of our oak tree so I used small screws. I wish I had thought to use tacks instead. If I remove the screws will my huge oak tree still be damaged ? The screws are brass and about 1/4" long
Thanks so much, they've recently appeared in our backyard this summer and have been very annoying. It seems as though they've multiplied...and as you said they would be bad for crops and possibly the lawn. Thanks a million for the guidance, glad we're not alone!
Works on everything that happens to crawl high enough to be under that mesh "umbrella", it's only safe for the birds and the bats, and probably some flying insects manage to get out eventually, but many will also end up in the zip lock bag.

does this work on adult lantern flies as well or just the nymphs

I am seeing nymphs all over my roses! How do I deal with that? This kind of trap won’t work on a rose bush 😩
same!!! i made a trap and put it on the rose bush but i don’t think it will work
This is why when putting tape around the tree, you cover it with chicken wire to prevent birds from getting stuck to the tape
Chicken wire holes are too big, heavy landscape paper or screen door screen works better
