    This was very helpful- thank you from NJ! My rubber bands did not survive after a few weeks, so I just heavily duct taped everything. But I've made 3 of these for my two trees and none of them look as nice as yours ): It's still catching a bunch tho. So thank you.

    What is the best placement for this trap, what kind of tree, how high, etc. What draws them into the trap? them

      I believe they can't penetrate the thick bark on the trunk so their instincts tell them to climb upwards to get to the ends of the branches where they can penetrate and suck the sap.

    Awesome idea on a trap, but wouldn’t they slide right off of the jug and back out? It seems to me like she installed it upside down but I can see why she wanted to pointing up since they usually crawl up and not down. But they would need a way to crawl inside the funnel. And it seems like they could fall right back out anyway. I dunno maybe I’m wrong.

    😎 This video led me to to read about Duke Farms. What interesting, cool, sad history I never knew was right here in NJ. I wonder what the mansion looked like inside when it was inhabited and before it was torn down. Hope to visit the farm and Japanese style garden there. By the way, nice trap.

    Is this fiberglass window screening? I haven't seen any plastic coated screening.

      Gorilla tape or any quality duck tape should work fine.

    on the back of that tree were those spotted lantern fly eggs? or just lichen.

    The mesh should go inside the bottle instead of wrapping outside. I know it is easier just wrap outside, but the bug will stop at the end of the mesh and crawl backward.

      I was thinking this. Have you done it? How do you secure to the inside and keep the opening unobstructed too. They may have trouble walking up polyethylene which is a slippery plastic, especially at that severe angle where they are almost upside down at parts of the "funnel". I may try spraying the inside of the funnel with some 3M 90 spray adhesive, which adheres to polyethylene (they say).

    I am in Northeast Pennsylvania and have been spotting the nimps and a few adults in my yard. I have all of the plants and trees that attract them. What time of the year would this work best? Should I do it now?

    What's the philosophy behind how this trap works exactly? I always like a little context. I admit I skimmed the video looking for that info so apologies if it is in there somewhere but I didn't see it.

      I agree that would've been nice to have. I believe they can't penetrate the thick bark on the trunk so their instincts tell them to climb upwards to get to the ends of the branches where they can penetrate and suck the sap.

    That explained very well how to make a tunnel, but I think the ninth grader who designed a trap with netting and tin foil (and a tunnel) has a better trap.

    🤔If you're going to use a stapler in the build you may as well skip the thumbtacks and just use the stapler to hold the screen to the tree....If you can push the thumbtacks in with your fingers a desk stapler should be able to penetrate the bark as well.

    The trap should be quite easy for almost anyone to duplicate. Surprised that it uses no bait. One minor technical point: In American Wire Gauge (AWG) the higher the number the thinner the wire. Thus no. 16 is fatter than no. 18.

    K I've made and deployed a half dozen of these traps. They definitely catch some lanternflies but these things are literally everywhere. I really want to murder them wholesale. Have you (or anyone in the comments) any experience with Harris Spotted Lannternfly Killer? I'd spray a thousand gallons of the stuff to eradicate this plague....but I'd be concerned for the bees and benificials. Thoughts?

    • @starsourcer
      @starsourcer ปีที่แล้ว

      Since I rarely see bees and butterflies, I will not use any chemicals. Just yesterday, there were about 10 of them on a rose bush. I carefully cut the stem with them on there and put it in a bag. Fly swatters are all over the place since I had such a hard time last year.

    I just act like Rambo and spray them with insecticidal soap. My yard is a good size and I don't have time to trap them. Way to many. They love maple trees, tree of heaven and I know there's more.

      @captainwho1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have walnut trees near a deck and trust me they are by the thousands maybe millions. It is hard to make a dent even if you spray a couple hours per day. Traps work while you do other things.
