Here are steps that you can follow to make traps for catching the Spotted Lanternflies.
My goal was to design a trap that is ...
    - cheap
    - easy to make and install
    - effective
    - catches the lanternflies, but spares honey bees and other helpful bugs
    - passive (you don't need to babysit it)
Credit goes to this teen for observing their instinct to only climb up: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjOKI...

A middle school girl created this trap because she noticed all of the spotted Lantern flies when she was climbing trees and she didn't really want to be around them but then she found out these crappy bugs would end up killing her beloved trees that she loves to climb so much so she thought about it and came up with a solution which happened to be the design for this trap I thought that was pretty awesome it's amazing how some of the most simple but effective and coolest inventions have come from children trying to fix a problem they have a different way of thinking and going about fixing a problem than adults and it can be quite effective in many instances such as this she didn't like how the tree bands that are all sticky that they are putting around the trees were killing a lot of are there insects and critters we're getting stuck in it besides the lanternfly pretty creative ingenious!!

This is great for the nymphs. Thanks for sharing. My problem is with all of the adults “flying” above my trap and staying up on the tree. 😩. I see them just gliding from neighboring trees and onto my maple’s branches like a magnet. I’ve been spraying the branches with water to get them down and out of the tree but it’s a daily struggle. I catch many of them by just scooping them rather than waiting for them to get into the trap.

Thanks for the video. I'm on my way to the hardware store to buy the supplies.

This trap should be placed as high on the tree as makes sense.
A lot of spotted lantern flys land higher than 5' on the tree.
Once they get on the outside of the screen, they are free to climb as high has they want.
I use a ladder to service my trap which is almost 7' high.

What good is it if neighbors aren't participating?

Thanks for the video. Do they all just die in the netting? do you have to remove the trap to clean out the dead bugs?

Hey dave. To answer your first question they do just die in the netting after a couple of days. For your second question, you should not need to remove the trap. If the trap gets pretty full you can shake the trap and make them fall out. For me, I haven't needed to clean out any of my traps since the beginning of the summer. Hope this trap works for you!
