I would recommend having your life-saving stuff on top of the bucket. If you have to use this bucket as a last resort SHTF measure, you will probably be dehydrated by the time you get to it. Fire starter and headlamp for emergency warmth and being able to see in case you get to the bucket at night. Another good idea to protect yourself from extreme cold weather, rain and other unwanted things, is too slightly dig out a foundation, and build rocks on top of each other all around with river clay in between, almost like a wall. Then too use thick cut branches as stilts for support. Then too build your roof on top. Cover it with broad leaves and moss. You can use the moss too even squeeze it in between the rocks or branches. What is useful is if you build a fire place with rocks and clay inside your shelter. Pretty cool and helpful
With a tarp that big, I'd do a lean to with a ground cover. That way you have a dry spot to sit and lay down while still having ample cover over head, and you'd only need 2 sticks to prop up the corners for the cover and make four pegs for the base. Toy could also pile up debris like grass and bows under the ground cover section to have a more comfortable bed. I am impressed you managed to get so much stuff in that bucket, very well packed.
Thanks for noticing. That's as much of a the challenge. To fit everything you want to bug out comfortably in just a five gallon pail. It's harder than it looks.

That blue container for your fire kit was made by a company called Rose Plastics in California, PA I believe. My mom worked there for years. They also make containers with threads that you twist. I used to used them for my POGS when I was a kid. Great video brother, thank you!

Chris, hope you are doing well sir! Hope the health situation is going well. Great video as always, 5 gallons of fun. A pot or even a shallow cake pan with a diameter almost the size of the bucket would be great. There must be something available that is close to the right size if someone was serious about such a kit.
I use a stainless steel large dog bowl for my pot and a large clay coffee cup. I got both at the thrift store for about $3.00. I use my multi-tool pliers to pull the dog food bowl off the fire. I also have a child size fork and spoon left over from grandkids. Also TIN FOIL! I use that stuff for everything.
The problem I found was that the saw, axe tilt on top of the 2x330 spoiled a lot of room. And then things really didn't fit around them. I could have easily fit this, and a lot more into a back pack for example. The bucket is just a weird shape that doesn't move. But it does keep things protected from the elements unlike a pack!
spices is something that I never thought about putting in a survival kit. It sounds like a waste of weight but having some pepper or a spice mix changes the way food taste and could help with the problem of eating the same thing for a lot of meals and help with the mental fatigue.

I've been doing survival bucket caches for a long time now. I never put food of any sort in them for one reason food residue will grow mold. Now for my bucket I'll put a pistol, ammo, knife, fire, shelter, candling, and the ability to obtain food and water, folding saw, fiskars hatchet, cordage/snare wire, hand fishing kit. Then whatever free space is left I'll fill with extra gear like extra hooks weights etc etc. Your bucket would be good for Basecamp supplies but traveling with it not so much.
Hi Chris, I thought of a couple items you might like to add to your bucket that wont take much space. First is a few plastic grocery bags, a knife sharpener stone (for your knife, saw and axe), a pair of gloves (like the white ones with black buttons.) Oh almost forgot. A telescopic fishing rod with a small reel. one last thing. I don't know if you know a tarp will stretch when wet, you might want to use slip knots on the tie lines to tighten it. Like the concept of the video.
Great challenge idea, I would add a small metal container for boiling water and cooking, the dog food bag could snuggle in it for room. Maybe you can squeeze in a small boat ration that comes wrapped in foil and lasts five plus years. Those are the only things I can think of that I would want to add to your bucket. 🙂👍
Ok, I love this one, it truly does show off your skills and creativity. I have many 5 gallon buckets which are filled at the moment with tomato and pepper plants, but hey when tshtf I will eat tomatoes and peppers, lol. I enjoy your videos and am proud of you and you are one of a kind, in this troubled world we created for ourselves. Stay safe and keep up the good fight.
I suggest you add several feet of heavy duty aluminium foil folded in the bottom of the bucket. For cooking and containers. Also clay ammo for the slingshot is cheap and lighter than steel

Now here is a question…Let’s just say you had to get out of town fast, like you said, what kind of fire would you really use so nobody would see it easily and what do you do to keep the smoke down? Smoke signal just scream “Come and get it!”
I would absolutely recommend a Leatherman, I got a fairly old one not long ago and the thing is so nice. Maybe if you get one do a 24 or 48 hr Leatherman only challenge? That would be cool
In the sheath of my Leatherman Wave + I carry a 1aaa Streamlight, an Exo-Tac nano-strike with a tinder pull and ceramic striker attached, 3 slivers of fatwood, a two sided flat diamond steel in the bit pouch, and a hank of #18 bankline aprox 24 feet. I'd love to see a Leatherman kit only challenge.
Watched until the end. I enjoyed that Chris and appreciate you taking the time to explain in abit more detail how things operate, from a fair weather wild camper in the UK 👍
I liked this video, I want to try a 5 gallon challenge myself. Maybe next month when I’m not so busy I’ll do a 72hr challenge maybe. Thanks for posting
I can tell you from experience. It is hard to find smaller than 5 gallon buckets If you're looking Smaller bucket you usually find them with shop towels or drywall mud in them
I would also add electrolite tabs. I'm in florida and take them as I am a welder and commonly see 100 in the shop during summer and water doesnt cut it.
A Novel Idea; If guys & gals that frequent the Forests exploring or "surviving" brought seeds & even certain Bulbs with them. They could plant annual edible plants in their area or anywhere. Kinda like the Dutch did in southeastern America, where Daffodils grow wild almost everywhere. Around abandoned Farm Houses, & even at random in the Forests.
Rather than using your valuable cordage, run a stick down at a 45 degree angle on the front two corners and tie the tarp wherever it ends on the stick.

Have you thought about applying to be on one of those survival shows like Alone or Naked and Afraid? Would be cool to see you on an episode and you're obviously qualified.
I have been asked before, but never bothered to go along. I applied to ALONE for like season 3, but I didn't advance passed the skype interview. I passed the phone interview though.
@@outdoorsforachange It also makes more sense for me to just spend 60 days filming my for my own channel. It would be nice not to have to worry about logistics though. But I wouldn't have changed anything, and don't regret not being on the show.
You’re small enough that you could probably add a couple 55gal heavy mil trash bags and make a hammock with two branches. A little more comfortable or you could fill the trash bag with the grass and make a couple mattresses
A metal mug would work as a small pot...or even a small can food can or tin and would be small enough to go in a five gallon bucket. Tbh I'd be tempted to put a small metal coffee can in...could put some of the smaller stuff in it to save a bit of space waste
You should bend your trigger release in a V don’t keep them straight that way the animal will go into trap further and you’ll catch that animal further onto the body
Must have a pot or container that you can boil water in. Preferably something like a stainless Nalgene or Klean Kanteen bottle where you can also transport water. Rather than a nifty filter though, you’re better just with a boiling container and maybe some aqua tabs. Relying on any filter is just a bad idea because if they freeze or are compromised, you’re screwed, and only the Grayl really is safe to use with water sources that aren’t pretty clean to begin with. There are a few things in your kit I’d forgo before I wouldn’t have a way to boil water. Outside of your water situation, you did a nice job with all of this. The dog food was a good add, as it will keep for a long time and definitely attract fish. I thought that was a good idea.
Ya, for some reason I only thought of my billy can, and knew it wouldn't fit. Later, like you, I thought maybe a metal canteen that I could also use to cook, and boil water in. I think I could get it to fit, along with the other items I chose. Maybe I'll try another time with revisions!
@@TheWoodedBeardsmanI love my Mors pot, but in a situation where things are coming unraveled, I think it’s more important to have a way to transport water as well as boil it if I only can have one item to pick from. Most people aren’t aware that Nalgene makes a single wall stainless bottle. It’s heavy, but it’s an absolute tank. I have a Klean Kanteen bottle too, and it’s great, but the Nalgene would be my pick if the end of the world was upon me. Plus there are endless options for cups and pots that will nest perfectly with a Nalgene as well as other accessories.
@@Jackalopestravels I have one of those, not sure the brand. And I have boiled water in it before, and works well if you can find a way to keep it suspended.
Think with the bucket challenge you cant use the same buck items over .. 4 different buckets 30 day challenge .. but let someone else plant the buckets for the mix
a colapsable spinning rod and reel with 20lb braid and plenty of softbaits and jigs would be perfect. Second If you can find a large pot that is just small enough to fit the inside of the bucket with not much wiggle room would allow you to have a large metal pot. Prob have to remove the handles, but drilling out the rivets and including some bolts would let you put them back on. If they are legal in your area you can also get auto fishing reels, spring loaded coil with retractor. Pull out to set and a small tug they retract hooking the fish. Prob 4'' accross and less than an inch tall. Coiled paracord laying in the bottom takes up very little space and can be stripped apart for smaller line or used as is. Vasoline in a ziplok or maybe bag balm would give you some minor medical treatment and use as a firestarter as well. I have used none of these in a survival situation, but just some ideas you might find usefull. collapsable mesh minnow traps work pretty well also which would lay flat and give you easy bait for fish or animals if you have a small stream or pond nearby. Might also catch crawfish depending on where u are.
You should try one of the folding ones with a lid and fill it all the way up with your smalls. I think it would add a pot and also be help with space as you could tightly pack that then tightly pack around it @@TheWoodedBeardsman
The trick with the bucket is that not everything fits like it does in a pack. You can easily fit that, and more into a decently designed pack, but you can't bury a pack and leave it indefinitely.
@@TheWoodedBeardsman Definitely agree on being able to bury a bucket, I was more commenting on how small a 5 gallon bucket actually is, you packed a lot into it!

@@TheWoodedBeardsman You did reach one million subs before someone else who WAS on the show. It worked in your favor, clearly.
Squasnatch although not a 1st choice would be in the list somewhere.😊😅good ideas man.not tryin to be harsh.
I did miss the last pond video! Okayyy!
Saw you had new content, and before I even clicked Play, my smile was a mile wide (this is slightly wider than a kilometer) :)
That blue firestarter case of yours looks like an expensive drill bit box! Maybe router or milling machine but it looks like a bit box of some sort!
Full stop as always, so glad to see another survival type video, I hope those traps get something tasty!
A great video, as usual. Somehow, part 2 hit my feed but this one didn't. Had to go look for it.
I'd suggest Bic lighters which are very reliable instead of a cheap substitute that tends to break, not work, just in general not last nearly as long.
Good to see you! How's the pond doing been awhile since I saw an update on Clark + Lois. I'll have to check and see if i missed a video.
I don’t suggest perishable foods such as the apple in the bucket. You don’t know how long it’ll be buried.
You’re small enough that you could probably add a couple 55gal heavy mil trash bags and make a hammock with two branches. A little more comfortable or you could fill the trash bag with the grass and make a couple mattresses
Best TH-camr they are
Matchbox challenge, or essentially a pocket/edc survival kit
Next time you see Fowler you guys should do a slingshot challenge competition. See whose most accurate. You’ve been practicing WoodBeard!
A pot is a vital part of survival. If could only take 5 items a pot ,knife, lighter, tackle snare
A mess kit would fit and you could pack it with the other smaller items
A metal mug would work as a small pot...or even a small can food can or tin and would be small enough to go in a five gallon bucket. Tbh I'd be tempted to put a small metal coffee can in...could put some of the smaller stuff in it to save a bit of space waste
Wallet survival challenge needs to be next
Blue container-all mine i have like that are from threading pipe or ease-outs.
Speed running survival challenge lol...thanks you for sharing stuff with us
Thanks man for the great video👍
“Drop it down to the coffee can challenge” 😭😂
You should bend your trigger release in a V don’t keep them straight that way the animal will go into trap further and you’ll catch that animal further onto the body
I'd replace that life straw with a small outdoor pot and some water purification tablets and a folding water bottle/bag
Good call
Great video! Full stop
Why not small (.22 or similar) pistol instead of slingshot? The rounds are almost the same size as the slingshot rounds.
HE'S JUST MAKE'IN SHOW NOT A SURVIVALIST REAL LIFE CHALLENGED JUST GETS IDEAS!!!!!!🤡👌
Those are the cleanest ax holes I've ever seen. Haha
Late season..you can often very easily re-use found holes!
a colapsable spinning rod and reel with 20lb braid and plenty of softbaits and jigs would be perfect.
@13:10 you can use a pliable bowl that can hold water and hot rocks and boil water like that instead of a metal pot
Maybe, but I'm I don't know of one that would be fireproof.
I have dyslexia and keep reading your name as “ the wierded boodsman”😂😂
A pot would definitely fit in that drum 🤣
You would think, but not with everything else in there. The connibears, axe and saw didn't leave much space.
You should try one of the folding ones with a lid and fill it all the way up with your smalls. I think it would add a pot and also be help with space as you could tightly pack that then tightly pack around it @@TheWoodedBeardsman
Bug Out Bag Challenge perhaps?
5 gallon glamping but well done... lol got the right idea
I'd add a tenkara rod. Some start at 18 inches. Throw some flies in too.
What about the shot glass challenge? 🤔😁
5 gallons is around 19 liters, that's the size of a small day pack! Nice assortment of stuff, but yeah a pot of some kind for sure!
@@asmith7876 You get it. Most don't, and have never tried. I worked on this a while before settling on what I did bring.
