Winter Solo Survival Challenge with Minimal Tools! | Bushcraft Shelter, Spit Roast Cooking Wild Food

  • Being stranded in the woods is no day at the park, but with $10, or more like $13 or so worth of items from the dollar store and a rabbit I shot that morning, "survival" can be pretty darn comfortable!
    I bushcraft build a simple tarp shelter costing just $3.50 with some paracord rope over a ridge pole. I make a bed with spruce bows topped with dead grass as an insulator. Using just materials in the woods around me, it's possible to endure harsh Canadian winter conditions!
    Next I open a can of corn worth about $1.5 using a cheap yellow box cutter $1.25 and garnish my meal of wild rabbit I shot in the morning with some olives $1.25. Find out how I cook the rabbit I shot using a traditional hair removal technique and cook it over the fire without a pot or pan.
    I break standing dead wood with my bare hands and with the help of a leaver system naturally made by two standing trees.
    Is fire easy to build using just a lighter from the dollar store? Find out.
    Surviving without professional tools is very challenging, but if you find yourself without, you may need these skills to save your life.
    This is a short version of the overnight dollar store challenge or the 48 hour survival challenge, as I opt not to stay overnight.
    Other survival challenges use only a knife, but while this is possible, using basic survival tools is more fun.
    I did not invent the dollar store challenge, but I should give Joe Robinet credit as he inspired this challenge: • Dollar Store Supershel...

      KIMBO 134: it was a budget challenge if he brought a Gransfors Bruk axe, a custom or a semi custom knife, ect... stuff just starts adding up in cost. So he was showing that you could also survive on a budget. Hope this helped.

    I did this challenge in high school with a buddy. We ended up with just roasted squirrel for supper, sleeping in a cave the size of a closet and waking up not being able to feel our legs because we slept on a slope... Done alot of learning since then! Love the videos! Bless you, brother.

    I really needed that advice. I just graduated and I realized I wasn’t taking enough, not just from my love life but life in general. When an opportunity presented its self I always would step aside for others because I thought it would benefit them more, but I see that I deserve to take advantage of all the opportunities that come my way.
    Thank you

    *So I cheated a little on this challenge, thankfully I'm not a rabbit and you can't actually shoot me for it! I find rules, especially arbitrary ones to suck. When I was deciding to do the challenge it was either my version, or none at all., so I decided to just do what I felt was going to be a fun way to spend the day rather than what I felt would be a waste. I recommend you take this as a life lesson. Don't do stuff that sucks just because someone else made up some stupid rules. Call it the $14 Canadian dollar store challenge with a gun if you one of those ardent rule followers - if it makes you feel any better.*
    *Also when leaving comments, just us the word A, to replace the actual word or it's going to end up in the comments to be reviewed. Also let's be clear that I don't mean you should be a complete A, but rather have an edge to keep things interesting with your partner. I thought that I did a decent job saying that, but some of the comments tell me otherwise.*

      anna horton you are so right. Let a man be a man, and a women be a women. We both were created with qualities that should compliment one another. There is nothing wrong with a man being able to take care of things at home or a woman learning how to survive when she's alone. But it's always better when they can work together.

    "Girls just want a guy with a backbone" True this, but; You don't have to be an a-hole to have a spine or edge. If you have passion for something other than her, and you stand up for the pursuit of it; and show the woman that your passion for her is as strong as your passion for the other thing, then you'll catch and keep her attention. That is plenty for a (emotionally) mature woman. If your woman wants to be abused or disrespected, then she has a mental or emotional deficiency and maybe you shouldn't be with her. YOU as a MAN have the choice to walk away from toxic women, just as women walk away from men we perceive as inadequate.

    The Wooded Beardsman. Good challenge and even more so because you chose winter time. My take on the commentary. To the Gentleman who initially ask the question. You were given good advice in this video. But from a woman I'd like to add something. My dad used to tell the boys, "Be man to your fellow men. Be a man for your woman. Be able, Be strong of heart and mind. Treat others fairly because with fairness and honesty the strongest relationships are made." Now specifically in how to treat your woman. As with men, not all woman are the same except in our basic needs. All humans share the same basic needs. Food water shelter and companionship. But apart from those basic needs. We all differ in upbringing, attitude and emotional balance. Some woman need to take care of you. Some woman are happy taking care of themselves. Some woman have little need for a man but enjoy the relationship and working together. Some woman need a man because they need the emotional and physical (SECURITY) of a relationship. Before you ever start a relationship get to know the woman. Is she needy, emotional and demanding? (Run for the hills!) Is she strong independent and willing to work beside you everyday? (Jack pot)! Is she a domestic wife who prefers to stay home looking after the home front while you go out and work? (Good mom good wife). A (Man) has to first define himself before choosing a partner. Then he has to decide what he wants in a partner. Here's an anecdote for you. When I was dating. Being who I am. I would strive to show self sufficiency this turned some men off. If you fix a guys car for him. Chances are he'll run. Lol gosh I learned that early! If he doesn't run 50 percent chance he's not grown enough emotionally to be called a man. For the woman out there. If found the man. Stand with him. That means in everything. He goes to the woods go with him. Learn earn and love. A strong couple will survive any adversity. Well thanks for another great video The Wooded Beardsman!

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Well said Marie. You added a lot more to the discussion and you are totally right. Men/boys need to decide who they are first, stick to it and find a partner that will compliment that. Too many men out there don't have anything else sorted out first and just hope for the best, but it doesn't work that way. Marie, you are welcome to fix my car anytime you want LOL. I'm just as happy to let be some of the responsibilities that comes with life and let go, but I certainly won't accept any grief for doing so!
      I've come to terms with the fact that my wife will insist that I'm only doing dishes for one reason, but now I put an end to it by reminder her that she's getting close to losing out on some free dish washing, and that I'll still get what I need later in the bedroom LOL Works every time :)

    • @Marie.on.the.journey
      @Marie.on.the.journey 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The Wooded Beardsman. Hey washing dishes is a nice thing you do for her. But there's benefits for you. First you get the heat from the water. (Helps with pain relief). Anyone who works outdoors will tell you. Soar hands suck. Second, it helps control soiled hands. Third, you increase your odds of her not having a headache. Sounds like a win win to me!

    If you can find a nice abrasive flat rock, you can rub and essentially file away the edge of the can that is rolled over to seal it. Works well on concrete or asphalt for urban survival too. Just rub the top of the can on the pavement until the seal is broken all around the lid. Awesome vids btw!

    • @avidhunter6169
      @avidhunter6169 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was just about to make the same comment but decided to scroll down to see if anyone else might have known about this life hack and lo and behold yours was comment number five. Once you have the rolled edge worn down enough to have the seal broken all the way around then all you have to do is carefully squeeze in the sides of the can right at the end and the top will pop out. Since your cans have a lot of liquid in them be careful not to squeeze so hard that you lose all the drinkable liquid. Great minds think alike!

    I would just like to take the time to say thank you for being genuine. I’m new to the channel but not to TH-cam, and there aren’t many people who care more about the viewers than the views. I say this meaning your taking the time read everyone’s comments because you truly care and I know this because I scroll and scroll reading the comments and people’s opinions and I see that you comment on nearly all of them with real answers not the cut and dry “hey thanks”, and you do this not fully knowing how you impact the viewers. I’m not exactly sure where I’m going with this but I’ve been binge watching your videos because I truly enjoy the content and appreciate any and all advice given along the way. Well I guess I’ll end the comment here by saying thank you on behalf of all of us who watch and take it all in and better ourselves if not because of you then because seed you plant in our minds too better ourselves. Keep it up man! 👍

    Hi, this is my first comment on any video in TH-cam but i have to thank you about the tips what you talk about at the end of the video. You helped me a lot to understand few things what i'm going through at the moment. I enjoy a lot videos about bushcraft and survival but it would never have come to my mind that i could find this kind of tips from these videos that would help me this way in my relationship. Thank you!

    And you get oils from olives as well, which is awesome considering one of your previous videos was about keeping as much of the skin on the rabbit as possible. I think you need some salt on that corn...salt, that's not expensive and would still be within the challenge budget. Oh well...
    Also the discussions are truthful and helpful.
    Awesome video again.

    SOME ppl don't like long videos (over 15 - 20 minutes) apparently, but I have to think; Over an hour of "The Wooded Beardsman", OR ANY length of time of "cable TV" (Comcast here, ugh), hmmm lets see, hmmm hard decision because, "The Wooded Beardsman" WINS HANDS-DOWN EVERYTIME! ANYTHING I would be interested in Cable I can get online and your videos are awesome. I only wish I could get to the woods more than I do.

Maybe try the native way of crafting duck decoys out of reeds to see if you could get a few to land? Would take a few days to make but then hunt over them. You could not look into the camera explaining to this guy ‘edge’ but when you are talking about survival or something you are completely confident in...dead straight eyes on us. Your speech was completely adorable but guys don’t need to be assholes, they need to be 100% confident in what they do. Nobody is going to roll over a confident man. You should be familiar with Jordan Peterson (he's been blowing up lately), if you're not: he's a Canadian psychologist who also is trying to educate people in the fact that it is OK to have gender roles and that men nowadays are losing their masculinity. So there is at least one psychologist who agrees with your views, which aren't just uneducated opinions.

    • @japhethbelgira2603
      @japhethbelgira2603 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From what I know, eating snow causes your body to lose heat, which is essential in a survival situation. You can eat snow if you have plenty of sources of energy. But in a survival situation, melting the snow first then drinking it would be much better to reduce the risk of losing your precious body heat.

    • @WayneRogersOutdoors
      @WayneRogersOutdoors 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes if you are not already hypothermic then eating snow frequently and in small amounts will not hurt. Better to stay hydrated because water loss is much more prevalent in winter due to stress hormone from being out in the cold causing frequent urination. You will dehydrate quickly and it can be just as dangerous as dehydration in hot weather. If eating a little snow helps offset some of that water loss and you are not already suffering from hypothermia then I would eat snow in a heartbeat every day and twice on Sunday. I have eaten a lot of snow over the years in situations just like this. In this situation he is not in danger of hypothermia because his core body temp is where it's supposed to be so it's fine.

    dont actually want a shout out but funny you mention it. ill like to shout out to everyone else though. ill explain;
    on your last vid I actually wrote some things ab what im doing now but later on deleted it :) Im dutch. I have lived a year in nz, great country. 5-6y in argentina. not easy to live in. currently residing in brazil. very hard to live in. One of my dreams was to set up a company here and maje a few buck. which I did. except for making enough bucks. So im stick in sao paulo 19milion people. a concrete jungle. i hate it. drives me crazy but worst I cant even enjoy the wild here. I did a few times ofcourse but next to none on my book. im married here and got 2 cats which are like kids to me. im moving back to the netherlands on the 7th. ill leave them behind just so i can work. i bought a ticket with my last savings. and just enough to eaf for 5 days and travel to an island where i landed a job. but its a 2day work-in so nothing is sure yet. ill be going from 25-35c to -10c and have few winter clothes.
    if i pass the first few days ill be all set. if not I will be on the street with not evem rights on gov assistance, bankaccount, home, nothing. just bcos I have no adres. without a home no adres, without an adres no home. thats bureaucracy for yah. but with this job comes a home so its a huge bet but its the only one. Now I bought the ticket Im commited. I worry but aint stresses out. If I can survive so many countries, so many cultures? I can do this.
    actually long story short...
    I wont bother anyone with the rest, just let my words be a shoutout to everyone who is in the shits. believe me, it can always get worst. its you who rains the leads. its you who can create oppertunities over and over again even if you fail. the momemt you will not succeed is when you give up. but not getting it the 1st 10tg or 100ths of times is still no fail unless you keep trying. and if that dont work? change your strategy. a strategical retreat is not a defeat. you bloody hell will feel like it sure, but it wont be. remember that.
    good luck to everyone!
    ohw and beardsman idk if you ever watched a joe spergrave vid, hes funny. hes setting up a youtube thing atm that might interest you. check out this vid; th-cam.com/video/q7RfYt_p2mk/w-d-xo.html
