I started this video thinking "wow cool I'm going to build some!" and I ended this video with "wow I'm going to buy some". Great video, and good on you for having the patience to build these cool shutters!
Project build article: ibuildit.ca/projects/wooden-window-shutters/ This is an older project (from 2015) that recently got hit with a copyright claim on the music I used in the video. I paid to license the music from AudioBlocks.com, but another company (TuneCore) holds rights on a performance that uses that piece of music as well (another "artist" just added vocals to the stock music). When I first started using AudioBlocks, you could email them and they would clear the claim with the other company. Since then, they have changed their terms and now it costs extra to get them to do it. I could dispute the claim myself, but these companies do not accept the valid license agreement that I have to use the music, and short of taking them to court, there's nothing I can do to get the claim removed. Also, there is usually an option to remove the music from the video, but TH-cam is not letting me do that, for some unknown reason. My only other alternative is to make the video unlisted and re-upload it without that music. And that's what I did here. As of today's date, the original video has 206,000 views, so clearly there is interest in the project. I unlisted the original so that the other company (TuneCore) would not profit even by a few cents from a false claim. The original didn't have any narration, so that can be seen as an improvement. I did have to add "safe" music, since I couldn't recover the tool sounds. I don't have the original clips or video - they are long gone, and had to download this from TH-cam to re-edit. This actually gives a nice opportunity to see where you've come with the workshop, totally proves your change for the sake of improvement argument with Matthias
I would like to thank you for your tv programs. They teach me a lot of wooden knowledge. Your sharing encourage me to make some simple stuff. No matter for a professional or a beginner like me, I believe that your effort will bring many people a better meaningful day.
What a shame to have to deal with this bogus claim when you’ve done everything right from the beginning. Thanks for taking the time to remake this video. Your solution for the knuckle and control bar being on the slide is another one of your well thought out, very clever solutions and not one that I’ve seen anywhere else. I appreciate all the effort you put in to providing excellent content.
Every cloud has a silver lining. I thought I had seen something like this video before, but I saw it with fresh eyes and was impressed with the simplicity of this build. Cheers and thanks. David
Beautiful. Your videos do not need music; your narration is excellent and more than sufficient. Personally, I dislike background music in most videos. Your project speaks for itself.
Man remember the good ole days when lumber was the actual dimension they said it was. Those were the days. Great video and sweet design. Thanks for sharing your process.
Nice work John! I work at a custom shutter company and it was neat seeing how you took this approach using simple shop tools. Keep up the good work! Also, when we build them with the tilt control on the side we put it on the back of the panel. Makes for a little sleeker look and is really more of a linkage than a typical tilt rod. By doing that you can route a rebate in the stile and connect the linkage directly into the ends of the louvers. Not sure if that would be easier than making all those “knuckles”. But very clever!
Thought I saw these before, is even better the second time. I still think they are way to nice for shop shutters, I think the side mounted slide is an improvement over the more common design. Good job as always.
Wow, Mr.Heisz. The Quality of this Video is top notch. The new shop layout and the bright and tydied (clean) look of the shop really look great in your videos. Thanks for sharing and keep going
John, every time I watch one of your videos I am amazing at the ingenuity and creativity that you have. I also read your build article and once again, amazed. The measuring guide you used for cutting the wire is genius!
Wow. You have waaaaaaaay more patience than I do. All those parts and steps? Sheeesh! I kept thinking, "Haven't I seen this video ... a loooong time ago?" Then I read the video description, after the end and all made sense. Love this video a second time, too.
Man...ive seen some videos using the kits for the shutters and just figured i'd order similar...till i saw the price of the kits !!! OMG...hundreds per shutter for the large size i need for my covered deck. Then i see this video. Thanks John for this. I"m soooo making mine like these. I might even price out a 3D printer for what i'm saving on the cost from a half dozen kits.
GREAT video This a good example of my wanting to watch a video multiple times. Both to learn how , and plan on. I'll watch your all talking videos but never more once. You really know your stuff .
Dang, sorry to hear about this John. I hope things work out. The shutters are visible in basically every video you've made since this first came out, and I always admire them when I see them. Happy to see them again here, despite the circumstances.
Love the video and I love the new music. Has that 80s synth feel. If it makes you feel any better I hadn’t seen the first one and this new one with the narration kicks ass. Eff that company; keep on doing what you’re doing. You bring a lot of people enjoyment, and my girlfriend loves the outdoor chairs I built from your plans.
Impressive! Great work too! Keep on inspiring us. Loved the musical theme, it kind of suits nicely the repetitive woodworking procecures... Thanks John!
I'll never again complain about the price of these things being made from wood. And I'm adding this project to my growing list of I'll never be able to do: like reading advanced physics for pleasure, running the 4 minute mile, and mastering barre chords on a guitar. Thanks for posting...totally awesome.
Damn good job on re-edit. Glad you did it. Even so its is ridiculous BS they are revisiting old videos with stupid claims that should already be "grandfathered" under arrangements that were in place & consummated back then. Nonetheless please carry on with the superb "crafty" genius at figuring out work arounds so that we can continue watching the content you share. Love your channel BTW! Carry On!!!
Nicely done John, very informative narrative nicely done, always enjoy yours and Matthias's video's especially the ones with the C clamp challenge thanks for sharing!
Are you married? Just kidding. You are a rare breed for detail, and it is a pleasure to watch you work. What's really nice is you don't paint everything, wood is too pretty to hide behind paint.
You tube should have acknowledged that you had a valid license at the time of posting and grandfathered you in. Argggggg! Glad you got the (new) video back up though.
Those look great! Cutting all those 'knuckles' seems like it must've been a real pain. I love seeing your build videos though, because you make that tedium look easy.
I really like how those look. I have three windows that I would love to put those on in the shop. They are pretty big windows though which might make it more difficult to pull off.
This is a great process for building shutters. Question: how would the knuckle angle change if you wanted to have 2" wide slats? Reason i ask is ... i followed this pattern and build a 7ft slatted screendoor. Had a bit of trouble figuring out how to increase the knuckle size and how to adjust the angle for larger slats. Also dropped the thing a couple times and whole thing fell apart during build.
I started this video thinking "wow cool I'm going to build some!" and I ended this video with "wow I'm going to buy some". Great video, and good on you for having the patience to build these cool shutters!

i prefer no music too.
karodora I have to agree.
It's just the soundtrack is bad and the idea is good.

You definitely had put much thought into making these, and we're well worth it. Great build, looks fantastic!
Wow. You have waaaaaaaay more patience than I do. All those parts and steps? Sheeesh! I kept thinking, "Haven't I seen this video ... a loooong time ago?" Then I read the video description, after the end and all made sense. Love this video a second time, too.
Love the wood! I salvage old framing lumber as well; your stock looked clear and tight and straight.
I'm glad you re-posted this one, I had not seen it. Love the build and the side control arm is genius.

You are such a talented man John, thank you for taking the time to make this video. Regards from the Isle of Man.
GREAT video This a good example of my wanting to watch a video multiple times. Both to learn how , and plan on. I'll watch your all talking videos but never more once. You really know your stuff .
They don't look just "pretty good!" They look FABULOUS!!!
Seriously next level video John. Excellent build and fantastic editing. Loved it!
Glad you revisited this; it was one of my more favorite projects of yours.
Dang, sorry to hear about this John. I hope things work out. The shutters are visible in basically every video you've made since this first came out, and I always admire them when I see them. Happy to see them again here, despite the circumstances.
?
Damn, this is now on my build list! Looking for pins on ebay. Oh but now reading the article. It is just clothes hanger wire. Brilliant!
I like it when you say: "They look pretty good". Have you ever heard of the word: FANTASTIC ?
Very impressive, and shows there indeed is a huge gap between a skilled and exprienced professional and a wannabe woodworker ;-)
Love the video and I love the new music. Has that 80s synth feel. If it makes you feel any better I hadn’t seen the first one and this new one with the narration kicks ass.

Those look great. The old 2x4s are money!
Missed it the first time (or I don't remember it) but I'm glad you posted it with narration. Nice finished project.
Holy crap I'm early. Sucks they did this to you. I remember watching the original video when you posted it years ago. Amazing craftsmanship.
John, you definitely have the knack! Thanks
Your camera work, editing, and music in this vedio is fantastic.
I love it all you have to have is a big table saw, a professional planer...sure it's cheap!
These came out brilliantly, John! Really liked the format/style of the video too, with all of the title cards for each section.
This was a very soothing video - a real artisan at work. Thanks for this.
Impressive!
Great work too! Keep on inspiring us.
Loved the musical theme, it kind of suits nicely the repetitive woodworking procecures...
Thanks John!

Your Chanel rocks bro. Great projects and the ideas and instructions you put into these videos is remarkable.
Really nice DIY project!! Who knew this could be so simple! Great Job!
A great project and as always, I love seeing how you create something from nothing, especially the working parts!
Impressive job John.
Awesome! I do like the control off to the side like that!
Nicely done John! 👍👊
Damn good job on re-edit. Glad you did it.

Nicely done John, very informative narrative nicely done, always enjoy yours and Matthias's video's especially the ones with the C clamp challenge thanks for sharing!
That's a very frustrating situation. At least this way people like me who had never seen the video now get a chance! I thought the build was great.
Great work John - these look brilliant👏 I like your hoodie dust mask 😂
Are you married? Just kidding. You are a rare breed for detail, and it is a pleasure to watch you work. What's really nice is you don't paint everything, wood is too pretty to hide behind paint.
Superb job and a very clear explanation. Thank you.
very nice video. I enjoy your presentation and the way you look at projects. You make it fun and inspire me to do more projects.
Congratulations!! Beautiful window!!
It's hard to believe your shop was ever this clean John! 😂 Not that I can talk.

"Pretty good" ? They look stunning man ! Great work
Beautiful video! I enjoyed the previous shutter making video too! They are a lot of work to make, but they look so beautiful and unique!
John, the man who make the job is the younger version of you! :)
Holy crap. And I was proud of the picture frame I made yesterday.

An oldie but a goodie.

They look great thanks for sharing your work and taking time too show it
Pretty good is an understatement
they look really cool, lot of work , but wow
Brilliant John!
Very Nice Shutters ( and system) !!
I really like how those look. I have three windows that I would love to put those on in the shop. They are pretty big windows though which might make it more difficult to pull off.
nice build man love it 😍 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Very cool project, makes me want to tackle making some for my shop!
Very good and quiet awesome machines
Outstanding, Mr Heisz!!
Beautiful work. I was worried about your fingers when you were making all of those 'knuckles' on the band saw!
wonderful graphic design! Thank you!!

Great build mate👍
Wow that looks great! I'd love to make that for my house!
