    PROJECT UPDATES:
    Thinking back to these shutters, the one issue that needed addressing has to do with method of holding the louvers in place. A screw was incorporated in the original design, however, over time the effectiveness faded. There are two other options you can look at as an alternative:
    1)Add a counter weight to the louvers on the opposite side of the handle.
    2) Add felt washers on some of the louvers on the rotation axels. The thickness of these should be slightly more than the gap between the end of the louver and the side of the frame - thus creating friction.

      Here is another one: I watched a guy making a carpenter’s frame saw. All you needed to make this authentic hand tool was a table saw, a jointer, a drill press, a band saw, a hammer and some glue. The glue and the hammer were not electric.

    • @MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut
      @MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      At risk of sounding mean, VERY CAREFULLY. In production, they would use a special stapling machine, however, in our world, whatever works best. Pre-drilling is sometimes required (Yes that is a LOT of holes) . The species of wood will also control what process you can use as some woods split much more easily than others.

      Hi Rich,
      No doubt making the shutters takes a lot of tools and work. However, there are manual tools that can replace a lot of the power tools that were used. Unfortunately, even fewer people are willing to put that much physical work into hand planning and shaping all the parts etc. It is a tough balance.

    Very professional work indeed but I think the actuator bar would look a lot nicer and more practical if it was moved closer the styles (preferably the outer styles next to the wall) away from the center where it's blocking the view.

    • @MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut
      @MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @kashsh4686
      Unfortunately, there is no hard and fast rule for what you are wanting. Scale and proportion are something that is part of the design process and that often relates to other objects something is related to. In this case, the scale and proportion of the shutter needs to follow the size of the windows and perhaps even the existing trim in the house.
      Sorry I can't be more help than that.
      Cheers
      Chris

    Hi,there great video.I am thinking of having a go at making some shutters,and am wondering, is there a ''maximum-length'' you can make the shutters before they bend or ''bow'' due to temperature change? Could the shutters be made using plywood,to help avoid this? Thanks for a cool video. 🎻

    • @MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut
      @MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is always hard to predict what will and will not warp as so much of that depends on the exact conditions. Outdoor, certainly a greater chance, indoor much less of a concern. Plywood, probably not a great choice as shutters are more of a decorative/detail object and plywood isn't the best for that. A good quality, well selected hardwood is more ideal.

    • @MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut
      @MakingStuffwithChrisDeHut  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi kashsh4686
      I assume you will be painting them which opens up the possibility of using Poplar. The economics of your choice will play a major factor in what to use. Also, regional prices vary substantially.
      I would avoid Pine as that would most likely be too soft.
      Beyond that information, i can't help much more.

    For some reason, the audio from the old video won't play via Bluetooth headsets, only directly through the phone. I tried multiple videos and they were fine. I tried 3 different headsets and none of them played over Bluetooth. There must be a formatting issue of some sort from the version uploaded. The beginning of the video is fine though. Tré bizarre.

      Hi Josh,
      You are probably correct. Back when these were filmed (nearly 2 decades ago!) I believe the audio only recorded on one track (left as I recall). Once this problem was discovered (after about 5 issues of the magazine), I hacked a cable that would feed the audio to both channels, however, as I discovered about 4 issues later, that created a high-pitched buzz some people could hear. Sorry, but at this stage of the game, there isn't much I can do anymore about it.
