    For a newcomer to a DGX 670 (I've had it for 2 weeks) these videos of yours are like finding the light, paraphrasing some religion. Joke aside, you really clarify concepts that I have not yet incorporated into my rooftop (my brain) due to the short time that has passed, and that at first glance seems complicated due to the number of possibilities offered by this device, but after a patient first glance Its application is understood and that the builders took their time to provide us with so many options. Thanks for the input.

Silly of me really, I should have gone straight to your channel. Love the subjects and your presentation, please let's have more. Thanks Tony! I am still trying to decide which keyboard to buy when I move overseas next year and I like the features of this one. I was looking at the MOD-X but it is missing features that I use like aftertouch which is used a lot by Arturia's Pigments patches. The DGX-670 does have it.

      I've never looked at the MOD-X before; I am super excited about the new CX61/88 stage pianos though - finally a stage piano that's a bit more "not crazy expensive" ;) Especially the 61 key which has a new "FSB" semi-weighted action I'm very curious about.

    Yamaha should compensate you for these instructional videos. They are sorely needed.
    I'll probably have to watch this several times, and then experiment with an external MIDI device. Somehow the Pianoteq audio out from my computer started passing through the MIDI cable into the Yamaha's speaker system. Do you know how to get the MIDI data from the computer to play the voices on the DGX?
    Also I'm wondering if the the string voices on the DGX could be forced to sustain with the DGX's sustain pedal by making a configuration change to the DGX's MIDI settings.

    • @JoeLinux2000
      @JoeLinux2000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I noticed there was no latency when you played the voice from your iPad with a voice on the DGX sounding. That's a really strong feature of the DGX. I think you would be very pleased if you combined the internal piano voices of the DGX with the voices of Pianoteq Pro. If you decide to go for Pianoteq, I recommend going straight to the Pro version because you can edit all parameters on every singe note. Sometimes this is important with a specific note that doesn't sing as well as you would like. At certain times of the year Pianoteq has a promotional sale; usually around July 4th.

    • @JoeLinux2000
      @JoeLinux2000 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe you know if this can be done. When combining the DGX string voices with Pianoteq it would be nice to be able to limit the pitch range of the strings, while having the full 88 notes of the piano voices. Do you think that is possible thruopugh the MIDI configuration?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks so much for the kind words! I don't know much about controlling the DGX from another device with MIDI (I actually have no idea if USB MIDI works that way like a din MIDI in/out port does to be honest)

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoeLinux2000 Yeah the latency is pretty much 0 (at least to my ears) with the USB connection; without the built in audio interface, you'd need to send the iPad audio back to the keyboard using an aux in (if the keyboard has one) from the iPad headphone port. I tried that with a Casio I had (no Casios have built in audio interfaces) and the lag made it unusable.
      I've heard great things about Pianoteq I'll have to keep my eyes open; I'm still a MIDI newbie but I'm starting to learn more about it.

    • @JoeLinux2000
      @JoeLinux2000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PianoTone I think it's a matter of sending and receiving. I think most MIDI devices can send or receive unless it's is simply a MIDI controller. Since the DGX is a MIDI synth of sorts, I think it should be able to receive MIDI data. In theory a better MIDI controller might be able to call up a string voice and controll its sustain.

    I was considering DGX-670 when deciding about my new digital piano this week (the other option was CK88) but I realized that it would have been an absolute overkill for me - what I really need is a portable digital piano (I decided that it will be Yamaha) with certain inputs and outputs that would allow me to sometimes use it with its built in piano sounds but in the majority of situations serve as a MIDI controller (internal Digital Audio Interface would be very helpful but not critical). I mostly use headphones.

    A strange feature of the DGX: When you play a DGX harpsichord, it sounds when the key is depressed half-way. I presume that's how harpsichords actually work. (I'm presuming it is the DGX that sounds early when combined with a Pianoteq harpsichord. I have to check again to be absolutely sure.) The thing is the two cannot be combined successfully. Maybe you can try that with your iPad and the DGX.

    6:51 wow, this is the first time I hope to use the DGX-670 to play into my computer (as MIDI) and get the VST sound and directly output to the DGX-670 again (as WAVE), and unlike my Roland FP-90X, the piano won't automatically mute the "Local Control" (the local piano voice), and I looked into the manual and search all over Internet, but I can only find an answer in your video at 6:51

    I followed this procedure word by word and it worked perfectly fine for me WITH the Numa Player, however I tried the same method with Pianoteq 8 and no matter what I do, including the procedure explained here, I still get the sounds from the piano and not from Pianoteq 8...very awkward. I really like the 670 but this MIDI issue is making me change my mind about keeping it and switching to another keyboard with better MIDI capabilities (so to say). Any comments in regard of this issue are appreciated.

    Great work! Thank you. Can multiple sounds be used simultaneously? For example,. could you pull one sound onto the MAIN, over a DGX main sound, AND another midi sound onto Layer, with or without an existing DGX layer sound?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks so much! You can hear the MIDI sound coming from a device on top of all the sounds on the DGX (you don't "tie" the MIDI sound to the main or the layer; it's just an additional sound on top of whatever the DGX is playing). I've never tried triggering 2 MIDI sounds at once (from 2 different apps running at the same time on a device I assume?); Whether that works will depend on the device and the apps (whether they can both receive MIDI signal from the DGX at the same time; if they can and both of them work, then the sound itself from both will come back to the DGX as one combined additional sound).

    Ok, let's go the other direction. I have an old MIDI Sequencer - a Kawai Q80. I would very much like to be able to use my DGX 670 to program drums into my Q80 in step time. According to this video, I can do that and I thank you for this great video. But, what if I want to use the Q80 to play back the drum track I just programmed and it triggering drum sounds on my DGX 670? The reason for this is that I used to use my Q80 for live performances with a band I was working with back in the 1990s. I would step time all my drum tracks to make sure they were perfect. Then I would go back and record bass, strings and others in real time. I would like to have this available again at least until I get the coins for a good DAW to put on my laptop. I do not think that the sequencer build into the DGX 670 has a step time capability and I'm not a good drummer.

    Hey Tony, great video. I appreciate your going in depth on the functionality of the products you review.
    I've noticed the Yamaha DGX-670 lacks a mod wheel function, do you know if it's possible to map this functionality to a pedal? I know you did something similar for the Leslie organ sound, but I believe that was for the on-board DSPs. I'm wondering if this is possible for using the Yamaha strictly as a MIDI controller, i.e. controlling a VST's mod wheel parameters through pedals. The lack of mod wheel is really the biggest thing giving me some pause about buying this keyboard, as I would primarily be using it as a MIDI controller. Other than that the keyboard looks great for my needs.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks so much! I don't think you can do that; the DGX isn't compatible with expression pedals, so the pedals with only send on/off messages as far as I know (you don't the gradual swell up and down that you do with an expression pedal), so they really only work as switches.
      Thanks for checking out the channel!

      @@PianoTone Thanks for the quick reply. That's a shame. After doing some thinking though, I think it's probably better to get instruments dedicated for a specific purpose rather than trying to get something to cover every possible base. So I'll probably get a dedicated digital piano for piano practice (perhaps the DGX-670 as I do like the Yamaha action and the added functionality is a plus) and a dedicated MIDI controller for VSTs requiring that extra bit of functionality

    Hi Tony, I'm still enjoying the DGX-670, as well as all your videos which I always find interesting and informative. I've also been taking advantage of some of the piano and pipe organ Apps that are available for iPads, and which sound superb when connected to the DGX-670. For portability purposes I recently bought an iRig keys 37 Pro MIDI controller keyboard which I also connect to my iPad Mini and use the Apps. The only problem is, because the iPad only has a USB C port, which I use to connect the keyboard, I'm restricted to the iPad speakers for sound output. I've tried using Bluetooth speakers but there is far too much delay between playing the keys to hearing the sound, and so I see a wired connection as the only solution.. I would love to be able to connect the iPad to the iRig keyboard AND some powered speakers at the same, and both with cables, when I'm away from home and away from the DGX-670. Do you know if it's possible for my iPad Mini, which is the latest version, to receive MIDI data from the keyboard through the USB port, and somehow transmit audio at the same time? If you know of a solution to this problem I would love to hear from you. Thanks Tony.

      Hey there! Couple of options; the first is the simpler one; just get a lightning adapter that also has a 1/8" headphone port - then you can connect either headphones or speakers (with a cable) to hear your iPad sounds: geni.us/lFfiMCN
      Or, you can get a powered USB hub and an audio interface (geni.us/cDBVze); the interface will have a headphone port; that will also allow you to record microphone etc (this is more $, more to carry around and bit more complex setup); if you just want to hear both things at once, I'd just get the lightning connector with a headphone port)

      I've never actually used (or even seen) Kontakt. From what I understand, it should be a case of:
      - connect DGX to device running Kontakt with a USB cable
      - if that device is a pc you will likely need to download a driver from Yamaha's websites so that the device recognizes the DGX
      - to disable the internal sound engine of the DGX (so you only hear the sounds from Kontakt) look up in the DGX manual how to turn "local control" off
      - since the DGX has an audio interface built into the USB port, the audio from Kontakt should come back through the DGX speakers/headphones
      As far as any configuration you need to do within Kontakt, can't really help you there sorry.

    Hi Tony, I bought a DGX-670 3 weeks ago and I'm finding your videos extremely helpful. So a big thank you. Having watched this video about using the DGX-670 as a MIDI controller, am I right in thinking that it could be used to control an external sound module or even another MIDI keyboard, even thought it doesn't have any MIDI in or out sockets? Thanks again Tony.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks so much! If the external sound module has USB MIDI in, then yes you can control it from the DGX just with a USB cable (like a printer cable + any adapter if needed like lightning for an iPad);for external hardware sound modules or keyboards, they will require (to the best of my knowledge) 5 pin MIDI. But there are converters/merger boxes you can get that do that.
      I reviewed a really good one here: th-cam.com/video/tCPGI17cly8/w-d-xo.html
      This box will take a USB MIDI in (and also 5 pin MIDI in as well) and merge them and can send it all as 5 pin MIDI out; so with one of these and the correct cables you could control another keyboard with the DGX.

      Hi Tony, I've watched your review of the DOREMIDI USB Host, and I can get one from Amazon UK. I'm now thinking of buying a Roland SC 8820 Sound Canvas to add extra sounds to the DGX-670. However, I'm still not clear on how (or even if) the sounds from the Roland module can be heard through the DGX-670 speakers using MIDI cables, or if not, I'd need to connect some powered speakers to the Roland in order to hear the sounds. The Roland module has MIDI in and out sockets as well has a USB port like on the back of the DGX-670. I'd really appreciate your help on this if you get the time. Thank you. @PianoTone

      Next thing to check is does this happen with every VST or just one? Any settings in there for transposing incoming signals maybe?

    If you are serious about this DGX-670, which I believe you are, could you go over just 1 screen at a time for example just the EQ section which actually has more than one screen. I have no idea how the EQ on the DGX actually works. For example what is "Q" the are three nobs that adjust it. Frequency may be more obvious, I'm not sure how many nobs adjust frequency, but below that row are five EQ nobs. What do they do exactly?

      So just to confirm you have your DGX connected to a (pc? mac? ipad?) with USB, and the MIDI signals from the DGX are getting through because you are hearing the sounds from your app within your app, but they are not coming back to the DGX speakers?
      I'm going to guess you are on a pc/mac not on an iPad (which is the only device I ever connect my pianos to); if that's correct. it might be that you need an audio driver for the DGX installed on your computer for the audio to get sent back? • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends if you need it to be portable; the DGX is bulky and heavy (50 bs!!!). If you don't need to be moving it around, absolutely! If you do need portability, then your choices would be:
      - wait for the just announced P-225 to be available (I did a preview video of the P-125's replacement yesterday)
      - get a P-125A and if you need to replace the lost functionality, buy a basic mixer with built in audio interface
      - look for a used P-125
      With the announcement of the new model, it seems 125A's are on sale in a lot of places, so maybe the 125A with an external mixer might be the way to go if you do need portability and don't want to wait.
      Hope that helps!

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@twistertee There are 2 main things that you lose with the P-125A that a mixer/interface can replace:
      1) Ability to play along with audio (so connect an iPad etc to your piano and hear THAT audio along with what you are playing); so you can play along with TH-cam, or your music files, or some online piano lessons etc and hear both the external device AND your playing through your headphones/speakers
      2) Ability to make high quality audio recordings without the external interface box (you can connect the 125 but not the 125A to your iPhone and record a piano video etc and you get high quality audio)
      Any audio mixer (even those without audio interfaces built in) fixes #1; you can connect your ipad to the mixer, connect your piano to the mixer, adjust their relative levels and then connect your headphones to the mixer output so you hear both.
      To fix #2, you need an audio interface box which converts analog audio to digital (so it sits between your piano and your phone to make a video recording for example).
      These used to be 2 separate devices, and you still can buy "just" a mixer or "just" an audio interface, but there are lots of combo ones now, including cheap (usually made in china) ones that I often hear great things about. So if you don't care about #2 right now, you can buy a super cheap mixer if you want (I did a review on these Moukey ones, they are just mixers and really inexpensive: th-cam.com/video/HlKpAwUy09A/w-d-xo.html)
      Or if you want to get a combo mixer / interface you could get something like this (inexpensive option - I have not tried this model:) amzn.to/3O5fYrX
      Or a name brand one like Alesis (which is a decent one): amzn.to/44kdiMW
      As far as outgrowing the piano? I know of people who use P-125's for performing, so to be honest it could last you a long time.
      Hope that helps!
