I bought this keyboard so that I could start composing again and wanted something with better/current samples that what I had with my old Ensoniq MR76. That keyboard workstation, although 30+ years old now was very simple to record to its 16 track sequencer and I was hoping for a similar experience with the Yamaha, but until now has been very frustrating. This video gives me hope that I can finally use it for what I intended it for. I'm excited to watch you next video on how to punch in/out and quantize. Thanks again, Dave.

Tony, actualy you can get into record menu (19:55) without pressing the REC button. Chose the song you like and press CHANNEL ON\OFF button. And if it`s on the style tab, just press this button again. The channels won`t be armed for recording, only mute\unmute mode. Then you can press the REC button and record like before. Thank you for your videos.
Hey cool thanks for that! Love the DGX but it's a never ending learning experience. It does default to the style when you first turn on the piano so it is still 2 keypresses, but it does avoid the potential "oops!" by inadvertently starting to record. Thanks again for sharing that I'll mention it in my next video!
My previous keyboard was an EW-410, and the DGX arrived just yesterday. Wow, what a difference! The voices, the feeling of the weighted keys, and the overall usability and experience are just fantastic. I`m watching all your videos about the DGX-670. Did you already release the video about the double bass clefs?
That's awesome so glad you like your new DGX! It is a pretty amazing piano. And no I haven't had a chance to do a video on the double bass (sometimes double treble) clef thing. If you care about the notation, the basic fix for that is to split the keyboard in a spot where you're least likely to have your left or right hands cross over each other; and just have the identical voice on both the lower and upper and the keyboard will put the left hand in the bass clef and the right hand in the treble. I had a question about something you mention at 1:45 - How do you Copy the MIDI file over to a computer so you can edit on a DAW like Garage Band? Do you have to play it live and record onto the DAW, or can you record on the DGX and copy over? Here we only see how to export the songs as a WAV. I understand if you do this, you'll be replacing the DGX instruments with the ones on the DAW. Thanks!

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I really appreciate it. I am trying to find a way to get the DGX-670 to pair with Logic Pro so that each instrument, including the styles, can have its own midi channel even while playing, instead of recording everything and then transferring to the USB stick. I saw a video of a guy doing that with the Genos 2 in which he developed a template to send and receive midi information and record that in Cubase. I think the same concept could be applied to Logic Pro.
I would like to know if this instrument provides accurate MIDI transmission like dynamics and other nuances. I’m planning to record piano solo in MIDI on DGX 670 and then covert this MIDI file into VST.

I don't think a score can be exported directly; but if you save your MIDI file to a flash drive and then copy that to a computer, I'm sure there will be programs/apps out there that can import a MIDI file and re-generate a score. Still trying to determine how/if recording dual voices on one track is possible. Does that require a scene (eg piano layered with strings) to be created and then have that scene played on track one? Plenty of info available in how to layer two sounds but can’t seem to determine if that can get recorded on track one. Keep up the excellent videos BTW.
The multi track recorder is MDI not audio, so the only thing recorded in the track is the data of what was played, along with (I think) some kind of data indicating what type of instrument voice was used (so when you open that MIDI file in an app it "knows" to use a piano voice vs. whatever else). But I don't think you can say "use multiple voices in this one track" like that. You'd be able to do that kind of combination with AUDIO tracks (not MIDI) within a DAW program, but the DGX doesn't have multitrack audio recording only MIDI. Your only other option would be to find a prelayered piano and strings voice (that's really only 1 voice) and use that. I'm not sue if the DGX has one (I've never looked to be honest). I don’t believe the midi format creates a limitation to record on one track, a user created layered tone, as my midi based Casio PX 320 can record a user layered tone on one of 2 tracks. I’m new to the DGX and to creating user created scenes, ie,configuring and calling up on demand, what the user has pre set on the device, be it 2 layered tones, custom reverb settings or the like,. Casio refers to this as “registration” of one group or set of user defined tones, rhythms, etc. that the user can assign to one of nine banks. On my 10 year old Casio, I can call up the layered sound from its stored bank location (e.g. 2 layered tones/voices/sounds) and record away on Track 1. Then come back and record a single tone melody on Track 2 with Track 1’s layered tone playing along. Up to five songs can be created this way. I’m thinking the DGX has a similar capability …actually hoping it can do this in similar manner via user created and stored “scenes.” If not, it would seem to be missing a fairly simple user configuration process.

To be honest I've never heard of that in a keyboard, you might be able to do that in software, but not sure why you'd bother if you're using a DAW (since you can have tones more tracks anyways). Sorry I'm not more help this is out of my MIDI pay grade lol. You might want to try keyboardforums dot com - there are a lot of hardcore users in there with much deeper MIDI knowledge than me.

Here's something that has me stumped as far as recording goes. I have a sheet music arrangement of "Someone to Watch Over Me" and I have recorded the right hand part. The song itself doesn't begin until the second beat of the first measure. The DGX assumes that the first note it detects me playing is on beat one. When I look at the recorded score, everything is wrong as to where the actual down beats are for each measure in the song. How do I get it to put a quarter note rest at the beginning of the recording?

It seems like the cfx sounds a bit different (and better) from inside the piano room than from the main menu. Is there a reason for this that you know of?
You’re getting different sounds because they have different effects in the piano. You have the ability to do change the acoustics of the brain and ability to open and close the lid or halfway.

I’ma bit disappointed. On my Yamaha P-515 keyboard, I can directly export a MIDI track to my DAW (Studio One). This method of getting a midi track seems pretty convoluted.
The tracks are all MIDI; you can’t record vocals (audio) as a MIDI track. With the DGX you can record vocals with your playing as an audio recording if you like. Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe

Just save your MIDI recording to a USB flash drive and then you can connect that to a pc and import the tracks into your DAW.

Hi there! To be honest I never record in MIDI, only in audio so I can't say for sure how accurate the dynamics are in the MIDI recordings.
