    This has been really, really helpful. I love the piano itself - the weight sensitive keys, the various styles, etc., but navigating the interface is nuts! Talk about complicated and un-intuitive! Yamaha really needs to address this in future models.

    You explained it well but man! This seems like a lot of things to do simply to save settings. What I mean is it should be a simple task as with most "setting" menus. You have only 4 banks to choose from but its a long walk to make it through in order to save a half dozen functions. I was curious about it but its simple enough simply to change the settings manually. Ill work on it a little here and there and maybe utilize it some day.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah I agree; I currently use my CK88 with my band, and the DGX is mostly just for practice/lessons so I'm not actually using the registrations much. If I was to use it with my band I would have to though (save a song setup in a registration). For practicing (like you say) it's easy enough to manually change settings; weird how the DGX is so easy and smooth with that and yet the registrations are so complex. :)

    I'd love it if you made a similar video just for keyboard players for musical theatre. A couple of weeks ago I was asked to play Keyboard 2 for a high school production of "Beauty and the Beast." I'm normally on K1 with only a few voice changes. But this show has a whole lot of changes, and QUICK(!) changes. The music teacher at this school told me, proudly, that they had a new keyboard, a Yamaha DGX 670b. Pairing my limited knowledge of synthesizer scores and only having played my Yamaha P-115, with just a handful of voices, before, I've been feeling stressed about how these rehearsals and performances would go. I was able to get some help from the Facebook Yamaha DGX 670b group, but a video would be fabulous. It doesn't need Styles. It just needs instruction on creating a
    A tutorial for keyboard pit players would include a definition of registrations, banks, folders. Explanation of main, layer, and left. How to organize the registrations one needs for a show, with an emphasis on minimizing "keystrokes." If I can jump from Tremolo Strings to Accordion Musette with two or max three button pushes, that's ideal.
    I did figure out yesterday how to use a flash drive. I had saved about 13 registrations, so rolled to a second page. And I didn't know how to save everything already loaded to the flash drive at the end of rehearsal, so when I turned off the keyboard and removed the drive, then turned the keyboard back on and inserted the drive, everything was gone. (I kind of sensed that would happen so wasn't surprised and didn't curse out loud in front of the cast.) Oh, and let people know that the display will sort in alphabetical order so, for example, if you're using TremoloStrings and PizzicatoStrings, you've got to rename them so they'll be easier to find. Ditto several different accordion voices.
    But most importantly, how to save the contents at the end of rehearsal.😢

      One other thing I didn't understand last night: layering two voices, e.g. CFX Grand and one of my string voices. This morning I read that I could selecting two voices and the first one is saved to main and the second to layer for a fuller sound. Very useful! Thanks! Jan

Unable to save OTS changes with styles I create. I want to memorize different sounds on the variations, like the factory styles that work with the OTS, but I can't find this "memorize my OTS" function and I have to search for the appropriate sound for each style call I create ... • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much! I just tried transposing with a style and it prompts you to choose whether to apply the transposing to the style parts etc - I chose yes and then saved it in a registration and it recalls fine. So if you have key changes you could totally put them in the 4 reg buttons for quick recall (hopefully no more than 4 key changes in your song lol!)

    Hi Tony, great video, thank you. Curious whether the DGX-670 offers and pedal options to INC/DEC (rotate sequencially) through the four registrations within a selected Bank? And/Or, does the DGX-670 offer a customizable method (sus/aux pedal inputs) to INC/DEC sequencially between Banks? Just wondering if it is possible to "practically" simulate a virutal BANK of more than 4 registrations with a bank, 8-10 registrations for example. Perhaps the playlist approach you outlined is the best way to accomplish something similar? Gratefully.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there - just looked through the FIFTY things the pedals CAN do but . . . that's not one of them :( But hopefully Yamaha is paying attention because that's a great idea.

      @@PianoTone Thanks Tony, "registration sequencing" and seems like its only available with some models (tyros, genos, electone organs, etc.) :(
      I'm thinking about simplifying my ancient dual KB Yamaha P-200 88 GH1 and Tyros 4 set, into a "single" affordabe hybrid like the DGX-670. I'd have to say the price point for the DGX-670 is incrediable for an 88 with Autoarranger capabilities. Got to consider the convenience of the single KB DGX-670 over the clunkyness of my space killing dual board midi'ed solution. The DGX-670 is alot cleaner but I'd have to compromise on all the "stuff" that the Tyros includes (sliders, workflow, reg sequencing, extra buttons, etc.) Tough call. From your research what is the "next step up" from the DGX-670 (88 arranger)? I can't tthink of any other product (P-5xx, CVP, etc) that delivers with the DGX-670 has at the moment (for the price at least). Really the the CVP line up but it's too expensive and don't need the premium GHx (Grand touch) triple action variants. Looks like you've been down the same road.

    • @winddealer1
      @winddealer1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@PianoTone Hi Tony, good news, page 63 of the DGX reference manual outlines the process to programmatically sequence linearly (reverse or advance via pedal L/C/R or AUX)l through the four registration settings within a single bank. Additionally, the DGX does permit a "followed by" action to move to the next sequencial bank (of four registrations) in the same folder or Stop or start from the Top of the sequence within a bank. This effectively provides similar capabilties of other arranger keyboards which may permit Banks that include greater than four registration memories per bank. Very happy to discover this because it was thought that the DGX lacked Registration Bank sequencing which it clearly does support and was also suprised that after the four registerations within a bank are exhausted it can then advance to the next Bank to furthur extend the play sequencing. Thought you and your audience should know.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can record MIDI to the piano or direct to a flash drive, so you should be able to export that to a DAW, and it SHOULD import the tracks separately. I haven’t done this though, just reading the manual. It says on page 68 what channels are used for keyboard parts, style parts etc so each of the channels you used should be a track in your DAW.
      I do plan on making a series of videos on recording with the DGX, so I will eventually confirm all of this kind of stuff.

      @@PianoTone Hello Thank you - Yes, I have already subscribed. Without a doubt the most .
      clear and comprehensive guide to the product I have ever come across. I ill check the manual. I want this as a nice keyboard for a living and practice area - but I want anything I create to be taken to a small recording room to add in acoustic instruments eg mandolin etc . Further processing and mastering then can be dealt with at this stage. I see this a great creative tool - if I can get the improvisational stuff with dynamics into the DAW then I can add the other elements. I had a suspicion that the accompaniment tracks would not be able to be exported as audio wav files - but it sounds like they might be possible? Great channel and good informative videos.

      @@PianoTone I looked at page 68. I see it saves files as MIDI format SMF 0 - which i think blends all tracks together . Ableton uses SMF format 1 which allows tracks to be loaded separatley into the DAW in individual tracks .. quote : MIDI files saved in SMF0 format store all MIDI data in one track only; so Live will also import them into one track. The MIDI file needs to be changed to SMF1 format which stores the MIDI data in different tracks: Save or export the file as SMF1 from the device or software it originally was created with.- end quote : so it looks like I need a midi converter from format 0 to format 1 - I knew there would be a catch - a bit like APPLE products . oh dear.

    Do you prefer this to the p-125? I'm thinking of getting either this or the p-125 or waiting for the p-225. Is an upgraded model of this coming out too?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is definitely a big upgrade on the 125 with the full colour screen, CFX grand voice, VRM, rhythms and accompaniment, etc - but it’s not portable like the 125 is (it’s 50 lbs and bulky). If you don’t need portability I would definitely recommend this over the 125 AND 225. I doubt there will be a new model soon this was a massive upgrade from its prior model the 660; it’s an amazing product

      Hi there; I've never used the OTS settings before but just tried it - doesn't look like you can overwrite the OTS voices but you can make your voice changes and then save it to a registration instead.

    I'm still trying to figure this out but have a question: During a performance how do you exit the registration banks to just use the stock keyboard settings without turning the keyboard off and on?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'd never use the DGX in a performance myself (too big for me to haul around lol); but if I did need a quick way to get "back to the basics" I would probably save a registration with the DGX the way it is when it is turned on, then you could just select that when you need it.

      Thanks. To save a registration for the DGX the way it is when turned on seems daunting to me! I will probably not use the registrations unless I record a complete playlist for a concert (which I had hoped to avoid) Yes it is very big/heavy to haul around - one of the downsides for me! We are considering it for choir rehearsals but I am trying to explore how we might be able to use it for our performances as well.@@PianoTone

    Thank you for your tutorial! The registration possibilities on the dgx 670 are still somewhat confusing for me. I cannot understand how I can get 'out' of the registration mode. When you attach registrations to all 4 buttons they become green at start up. If you want to play one registration mode you push the button and it gets orange, but there is no way you can come into the 'fresh' start up mode with all buttons green, the exit button nor the piano room button will do it ( the piano room button temporary, because it switches all settings off) . The only way is to switch the keyboard off and on again.

    • @PianoTone

      The registrations are definitely pretty confusing on the DGX! You can switch to a different bank and then switch back again, all your buttons will be green.

      What i did to resolve this is create a new “Default” bank with 1 memory of the default settings when turning on the DGX. My older keyboard (PSR-EW425) had a portable grand button to quickly go back to the default settings, however i have not found this on the DGX. Also going to the Piano Room does not reset the default settings like a power off and on will do.
      Other then that it is an amazing keyboard / piano!!

    I appreciate your effort on this. I'm extremely frustrated by the OS in this piano. It's very convoluted and not intuitive at all. Here's a guy that got a lot out of his:
    th-cam.com/video/ciOl_dUcaRY/w-d-xo.html
    He also has instructions for downloading more voices that came from earlier models.

      Thanks, glad you find the videos helpful! That's a cool video you linked to thanks; I do plan on doing a series on recording with the DGX (making multi track recordings with the sequencer; I did a similar series on recording with the PSR-EW425 keyboard). Just a matter of finding the time to learn all of that myself first then making the videos. But it will be coming, hopefully sometime this summer!
