Casiotone CT-S1 76 Preview
This is a quick preview on the 76 key version of the Casiotone CT-S1, which is one of my favorite super portable keyboard options for piano players. More keys, WAY bigger speakers, still super portable at only 11.5 lbs and more compatibility with Casio Music Space? That's pretty exciting, I can't wait to try one out!

Yamaha PSR-E383: Fix For Sustain Pedal Issues With MIDI
มุมมอง 278วันที่ผ่านมา
Short video on how to fix an issue with the Yamaha PSR-E383 (same issue existed with the E373) when using it as a MIDI controller - with SOME apps (GarageBand on iPad, Synthesia) the sustain pedal doesn't work. This video shows a fix for that issue specific to the E383, and also introduces a new app I found called MIDICulous; similar to Chordie (shows the keys, chords and notes you play), excep...

    Hi Tony, thanks for the video focussing on dawless set up and controlling hardware synths. Question: did I understand well I only need a computer connection to customize the midi signals from the controller to my hardware synth in the Arturia midi control center. After that I do not need any computer connection and can use the controller to steer my hardware synth (Roland SH-4d).

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm not familiar with your synth, but if you can configure the Arturia with a custom setup to send the correct MIDI to it, you should be fine. Once you create a custom setup (on your computer) you actually copy it into the Arturia's memory, so you should be fine. Hope that helps! Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe

      They’re both fantastic and have very similar piano actions - both are a bit on the light side but they are my favourite piano actions ever. If it’s just for home and you like playing around with other voices I would recommend the DGX. It has way more voices, tons of rhythms to play along with, and also a bit better main piano sound. Both have the CFX Grand sample, but the DGX has virtual resonance modeling which modifies the sound as you play so it’s that much more realistic. The DGX is just far less portable. Hope that helps! @@mfurman I've agonized over buying the $$$$$ Exp-50 Hammond pedal; everyone online says it's amazing but I just can't get past the price it's SOOO expensive for a volume pedal. The Yamaha FC7 (geni.us/SM9iImJ) worked ok, but not really any better than the cheap M-Audio ones (geni.us/ejZUL10). I'll probably buy a Hammond one eventually . . . I also tried a Studiologic one and it was ridiculously huge so I sent it back. Any generic sustain pedal (with a polarity switch) will work for the leslie on/off speed switch but to be honest, the cheap brick pedals that come free with pianos work best for this (you don't need the metal sustain pedal); I'm using a Yamaha one I've had forever that's a bit nicer (has some metal in it) can't even remember where I got it. You don't actually have a sustain pedal port on the M-Solo (you do on the SK Pro because you have piano and EP voices) ; you don't need one for organ.

    • @PianoTone

      The CK88 has Yamaha's GHS graded hammer action (the CK61 is a non weighted organ action "FSB"), with options to adjust the touch sensitivity levels. This is a dual sensor action (it's my favorite piano action), and is a little on the "light" side. Action is a personal preference, some people love this action, others do not and prefer a heavier action like the Roland PHA4 (which I'm not a fan of). The P-515 is a very unique action - it's a triple sensor, and it feels very heavy to play at first, but then when you get used to it, doesn't feel as heavy and responds well. @@jorjajorjan3863 Hey thanks for the sub! To be honest I've never tried a ModX so can't really compare those (I'm also guilty of either practicing 100% at home with headphones - live in an apt, or at band practices where we're loud enough I'd never notice the keys). It's the same GHS action as the P-125 or DGX 670, which I've never found to be super noisy or anything. The CK61 action is whisper quiet because it's not weighted.

I actually sold my PX-S1100 because it was so frustrating to use.

  • @Instrumental-Covers
    @Instrumental-Covers 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I'd like to provide a little bit of insight into the speaker design of the Yamaha CK88 and Yamaha P125. Both keyboards have downward-facing speakers. The CK88 has oval (12 cm x 6 cm) speakers, and the P125 has (circular) 12 cm speakers. The area of a 12 cm (diameter) circle is 113 squared cm, and the area of a (12 cm x 6 cm) ellipse is 56 squared cm. So, basically, the CK88 speakers move half the volume of air than the P125 speakers at the same wattage. A common design of speaker systems in digital pianos is that speakers are not always enclosed in boxes. For example, the Yamaha P125, Roland FP30X, and Kawai ES120 have speakers inside the digital piano case, but they don't have individual boxes. Other models, such as the Yamaha DGX670, Yamaha P525, Yamaha P-S500, Roland FP60X/90X, and Kawai ES520/920 have speakers in "ported" boxes (a hole with a pipe inside the box to enhance the low frequency response). Each design has its advantages and drawbacks: placing a speaker without any box inside the digital piano case allows the back wave of the speaker to fill the cabinet with sound, for a more natural piano tone... a bit similar to open-back guitar speaker cabinets. Ported designs provide a tighter, more accurate sound, better bass response, but at the expense of a more expansive natural sound, somehow similar to a closed-back guitar speaker cabinet. Oftentimes, both approaches are mixed into the design of some digital pianos, such as the Yamaha Clavinova CLP-745, which has 16 cm downward-facing woofers (no box) and 8 cm speakers contained in individual boxes facing the player. When speakers are not contained in individual boxes, the sound fills the entire cabinet and leaks through any hole. In the case of the Yamaha P125, the sound comes not only from the speakers facing downward, but also from the keyboard itself! Do the following experiment: play a demo song on the P125 and cover the keyboard (without covering the speakers) with a thick blanket... the sound becomes very muted. This is because the separation between the keys allow sound to disperse, and this is one of the most important sources of sound in models such as the P125, FP30X, and ES120. While these models may have "sound ports" (for example, the P125 has a number of holes on the back), the separation between the keys is arguably the most important source of sound dispersion, in conjunction with the speaker holes. The CK88 has the smaller speakers located on the back of the case, whereas the P125 has the speakers under the keyboard. This allows more sound to leak out directly through the keyboard, where the CK88 speakers have the top plastic panel over them. While sound can still get out through the CK88 keyboard, it must do so using a less direct pathway. In addition, the P125 has two big holes on top of its case. You might think these are "speaker" holes... they are not. There are no speakers there: the sound comes indirectly from the main 12 cm downward-facing speakers. The CK88 doesn't have any dedicated holes on top. This means the P125 has more ways to allow sound to come out of the case. The P125 has two tweeters on top, located toward the inner portion of the "speaker" holes, but their effect is minimal for piano sounds. In fact, if you cover the tweeters completely, the piano sound is almost not affected at all. You lose a bit of the brilliance, but not that much. The tweeters are much more important when using the built-in drum patterns, since drums easily reach the 20K hertz, whereas piano sounds are pretty much done around 6K-7K hertz for all practical purposes (this can be easily shown using digital filters in piano recordings), and even less (around 3K hertz) for warm piano samples. In other words, the 12 cm speakers handle most of the piano sound by themselves. This is why the Roland FP30X and Kawai ES120 can get away with not having dedicated tweeters. Or the P45/P143 for that matter. To summarize: both the CK88 and P125 have downward-facing speakers in box-less designs that fill the entire cabinet with sound. However, the P125 has, at least in design, some advantages: 1) upward-facing holes that allow the downward-facing speakers to breathe 2) tweeters on top, but they are not that relevant for piano sounds, particularly for people in the audience. The 12 cm full range speakers can easily handle most piano frequencies, within reasonable understanding of the term "full range" (more like 100 Hz - 10K Hz). 3) 12 cm speakers move twice more air than oval 12 cm x 6 cm speakers, which may impact overall volume and roundness of tone. They might also have a higher sensitivity (how loud they play at 1 watt, typically measured at 1 kHz), as larger full range speakers usually have higher sensitivity values than smaller ones. 4) 12 cm speakers are located under the keyboard, which serves as one of the most important sources of sound dispersion. Covering the keyboard with a thick blanket and playing a demo song reveals how important the keyboard slots are: you will get a very dull, tiny sound. The CK88 speakers are located towards the back, which makes more difficult for the sound to reach your ears via the keyboard slots.

      Hi there! I've never even seen a CTX-3000 so I can't really comment on that (no stores where I live have ever carried any of the CTX series). If you're after an arranger, just the fact that the E383 is brand new and the CTX has been around for years might make me lean towards the Yamaha. One thing to note though (if it matters to you); Casio usually (not sure about the CTX-3000) has more chord detection modes than Yamaha does for working with the accompaniment (Yamaha only has multi finger or "smart chord", Casio's usually have more choices). I really appreciate your videos! The Yamaha DGX 670 is my main piano, but I've been looking into getting a more portable piano for playing outside and potentially gigging in the future. The three keyboards you've mentioned seem to be good options for that use case. I will miss having a pitch wheel though haha. In a perfect world I would spend a ton of money on a Yamaha DGX 670 but actually portable instead of 50 pounds, but if that doesn't exist these keyboards might be my best options.

    Always enjoy your reviews and have followed recommendations in the past. I have picked up piano at the age of 75, had lessons as a kid and played a little as an adult until it became too ponderous to move a piano cross country. Been relearning since October 2023. I have a Casio PX-S3100 and I enjoy it except that I practice with headphones and I can hear the ‘clunk’ of key action outside of the headphones and it’s irritating. Also, per your recommendation, I got a Casio CT-S1 for a portable solution for practice when I’m not at home. Your review, and others, of the Korg Liano mention the quiet key action. How does the feel compare to the two Casios I have? I have PX-S3100 set to lightest key action. I find I need to adjust to the semi-weighted feel of the CT-S1, is the Liano similar in feel or is it a little more like the PX-S3100? I have also found that even though the hundreds of sounds and rhythms were attractive when I researched, I find that I generally use concert grand, stage and jazz piano voices. Since the Liano weighs right in between the two Casios, I’m considering going to one piano, the Liano. What are your thoughts?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks so much glad you like the videos! The Liano key weight will probably feel similar to the CT-S1 (not as heavy as your 3100) but it responds more like a piano (hard to describe; it just feels more like a piano just one with very light key action). The CT-S1 action is way better than most synth action keyboards for playing piano pieces, but the Liano is even closer to a piano feel. And the true full size keys do make a difference (at least for me) - I bet you would find it easier to go back and forth from your 3100 to the Liano than to the CT-S1. And if you only need piano voices, the Liano's main voice is a great all purpose piano (it sounds nice in a ballad but brightens up in rock/jazz if you play with more energy). Hope that helps!

    Casiotone’s latest offering, in my view, falls short of expectations, making the $349.99 price tag seem unjustified. As an owner of the original model, I found it to be a decent value for the price. However, this new iteration doesn’t quite measure up. In my experience with the original model, I found that many of the voices lacked an appealing sound quality, leading me to seldom use them. In fact, I found most of them to be quite displeasing. A prime example is the guitar voice, which is accompanied by an unpleasant pad effect. I’m baffled as to why Casio chose to include this effect, as it doesn’t resemble the sound of a real guitar at all. The pad effect makes playing chords sound terrible. I’m aware that Yamaha, for instance, has a far superior guitar voice that is actually usable. Just my two cents. In my opinion, Casio could have taken a page out of Yamaha’s book when designing this new model. They should have reintroduced weighted keys for a more authentic piano feel, eliminated the unnecessary guitar pads, and discarded most of the unappealing voices. Moreover, I believe a price range of $250 to $300 would have been more appropriate for such a product.

      in summary Give us better speakers, better base, & key weighted action, & get ride of all those awful voices that hardly anyone ever uses at best in my opinion out of all 61 voices maybe 10 to 15 are useful voices. just my opinion.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for sharing all that! I totally agree, the "extra" voices (guitars, horns etc) on Yamahas are always way better than the competition. The 76 key CT-S1 looks to be priced in the exact same range as its competition from Yamaha (Piaggero) and Korg (Liano) - neither of which have weighted keys, but all 3 have some kind of "piano-like" action that's not as good as fully weighted, but is way better than synth action diving board keys (and keeps the weight down for portability) I think if Casio added weighted keys (and the cost associated with them) you basically have as CDP-S160 (I just reviewed that - it's their cheapest fully weighted action piano). The speaker upgrade does sound promising; I would really have liked to have seen a USB audio interface though (both the Yamaha and Korg have that); I know I always hope for LR line outs, but very few if any intro keyboards have those. Thanks again for sharing!

      @@PianoTone is the CDP-S160 any good compared with this new version?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Mr.PhatsVarietyVibesShow Can't really compare those directly - the 160 has Casio's most basic fully weighted key action and 88 true full size keys, the CT-S1 has 76 slightly narrower synth action keys (they do play a bit "pianistically" and feel almost semi-weighted, but they are still non weighted keys). The 160 has all the function key combinations labelled on the panel which is nice; the CT-S1 makes it easy to select the first 28 voices, but for any other voices or any settings changes you're looking up key combinations because nothing is labelled (hoping the new compatibility with Casio Music Space will address this). The CT-S1 has more (and maybe a bit better?) voices, and is super light and portable. They really aren't that comparable - one is a fully weighted piano the other is meant for super portability so it really depends what's more important to you.

    Tony, I apologize for placing this question in your most recent video, instead of another, more relevant to my question video. You have Hammond SKPRO and Studio Logic Numa Compact 2X (not counting Yamaha DGX-670). The price of Hammond SKPRO 73 key is higher than Nord Electro 6D 73 key (very similar actually) in Canada. What made you decide to get Hammond SKPRO instead of Nord Electro 6D that has very good and upgradable piano (and other) sounds? I am still debating what I should get for myself if I wanted to learn to play organ. I would definitely return P-525 and get (for instance) Yamaha P-45 (on sale now) that I would use with my piano VSTs. I would be also practicing on Yamaha C7 and just learn to play organ (mostly jazz) at home. Your comments would help me to decide what to do. I am still considering Hammond Solo and (as you suggested) XK-1C. I will first need to find a good organ online school. Thank you, Michael

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      LOL no worries. I decided on the Hammond over Nord (or any other clones like Yamaha CK/YC, etc) mostly because of the better quality organ engine. The CK was fine (sounded great to me . . . at first, because I didn't know too much), but then I borrowed an SK1 (predecessor to the SK Pro, came out in 2011) - it's demo'd a bit in my M-Solo review; and it sounded SOOOO much better (even being that old) than my CK did (and the leslie effect was way better, and the overdrive was better etc). The Nord's sounds are probably closer than the Yamaha, but I always found the Nord user interface confusing, and . . . I knew if I bought something that didn't say "Hammond" I'd end up buying a Hammond eventually anyways. I was very torn between the SK Pro and phase out the Numa so just carry 1 board to band practice vs. keep the Numa for piano/EP and get an XK-4 or XK-1C (also circa 2011) for just organ. The piano on the SK Pro is way better than the SK1, says "Y-CF" on screen so that tells me it's probably the CF Grand sample from the P-125; the EP's are awesome on the SK Pro as well, the only weak voices are the "extras" like woodwinds and brass. I still go back and forth a bit wondering if I should have gotten the XK-4, but now that I have the SK Pro, if I sold it I would lose enough that I might as well just keep it and if I wanted to could pretend it's an XK-4 and just use the organ :) Knowing how you put a lot of emphasis on your piano actions, I am willing to bet you won't like playing piano pieces on a Nord Electro or an SK Pro anyways, so maybe keeping a piano with action you like and just getting an XK-4 might be the way to go. I don't mind playing piano on the semi weighted non graded action, but you might think differently. I know most stores don't stock Hammonds, but if you spent some time on an Electro just playing some of your piano pieces the action is very close so it would give you more of an idea. For training/courses, I have to recommend Marine from Online Rock Lessons, she is an amazing player, and her courses are awesome (the main course is piano, but she has added actual Hammond courses now and they're excellent). The link is in multiple videos of mine but here it is again: onlinerocklessons.com/membership-signup/ If you use PIANOTONE as a coupon code if you go ahead she'll give you a free lesson/zoom intro call. Thanks for sharing that! Yea it’s not a huge upgrade, although Yamaha kept the price the same which is awesome. The metal speaker grills, smaller form factor and the auto chords are still great for the same $ - if you can find a 373 for a big discount then yeah get that. I guessed correctly 🙂. There is something wrong with piano market, the most obvious things are mis-designed or buggy... Many thanks for covering such issues as this one.

    Perhaps the Garage Band needs to fix their software.

      I don’t think it’s GarageBand - other apps also have this issue - I think it’s something to do with Yamaha not sending a standard MIDI message on the E383/373 (this is not an issue with the Yamaha PSR E473/EW425)

    Thanks so much for the help. I managed to convert the piano into a controller but it randomly gets disconnected still from Ableton Live though my MPK mini is always recognised properly. I am unable to get it to work as a controller again unless I reboot the computer perhaps. Any clue why the MPK mini could be responding so instantly while DGX is being so capricious?

      To be honest no idea - I never use DAWs (if I need one it’s GarageBand on my iPad) - did you download a Yamaha (“steinberg” I think) driver from their site? Sorry I can’t be more help!

    I'm testing SBP at the moment to include backing tracks but I am missing the option of starting lyrics scrolling and backing track with one click on the Bluetooth pedal. Playing live, it is not an option for me to operate several buttons on the tablet during a show. I need a setlist and lyrics+tracks to play with one stomp and a song timer present as well as scrolling lyrics while playing. I thought SBP was a step better than Linkesoft Songbook but it does not look like it's a solution for me on the Android tablet. I have an existing larger backing tracks setup with a laptop and Showplay software that does everything I need but I was just hoping to be able to move to the smaller tablet format.

      I don’t use a pedal with mine (although I know it’s in the menu to configure) but I’m using an iPad - don’t own any androids; sorry I can’t be more help!

    You would expect the sustain pedal to work anywhere, it's a very standard MIDI message. This is so weird. When you get into teacher split mode, some of the actual Yamaha pianos actually convert the left pedal to a sustain pedal (for the teacher) as well. I wonder if the PSR shares some of the firmware and possibly changes the MIDI message of the pedal in this mode. It would be a good idea to use something like MidiView to check what is been sent in either case.

      Hey that's an interesting idea! This was a problem with the prior model as well (PSR-E373) but NOT with the next model up in the same line (PSR-E473/EW425) so there's definitely something weird going on there. Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe
