Great way to re-enforce the bag! The way I always re-enforce my bags is using a long, continuous piece of twine. I weave the twine in with a tapestry needle, starting at the bottom of the bag, weaving it up through crochet stitches through the first handle, around and back down to the bottom of the bag. Then I repeat this for the other side. This has always worked for me, but I’m excited to try it your way with the twill tape.
I'm going to try this!! My boyfriend just bought me this rainbow crochet bag that I fell in love with and it stretches as soon as I put ANYTHING in it!
If you want to line a crochet bag to use for a market bag you can use t-shirt material, which is Jersey knit, and that lining will stretch along with the crochet . That way it will act like a market bag but it won't have the holes . Another suggestion is you can buy surgical tubing and crochet around it just like you did the Twill tape. And that makes a very sturdy handle
To continue the idea of using jersey knit/t- shirts, you can stretch out a long strip of the jersey until it rolls into a tube, then use it instead of the twill tape.
I think this is a great video. So much information. Thank you for putting this into a video. The reinforcement of the bag handle was something that I had never considered before. Your information made so much "real use" help to me regarding the handle of the bag, specifically. Had you not demonstrated the crocheting over the reinforcement that you used, I'm not sure that I would have understood exactly how to implement your ideas. Another way to add structure (but not to stash bust, sadly) is to choose a "yarn" material that has more structure and less stretch than typical worsted weight yarn. The heftier crochet cottons (5 and larger, or two strands of 10) can help produce something capable of more use. But things that aren't yarn will give the best results. Try a hardware store for plumb line, or use the smaller gauge paracord (you can use 550, but your hands will tire easily. Try something smaller, even down to 95.) for something that can really handle weight. I made a net bag for our van 10 to 15 years ago with plumb line from a hardware store. The net bag that went between the seats had broken, so I rescued the elastic cord which connected to the seats and crocheted over and around that. We still have that bag, just like new, but the van is long gone. 😏
I found this video a week too late! I spent way too much time and effort crocheting a strap for a bag. I slip stitched 6 rows using cotton yarn so its solid and not stretchy, but I tore up my forearm muscles doing it. Will be using twill tape from now on! never thought of machine sewing the lining in, it looks like another time saver!
Oh no! I’m sure that slip stitch strap took a WHILE…but I bet it looks amazing honestly🙊 slip stitch always does! Definitely give this a shot next time, I think your arms and wrists will thank you!
I use plastic mesh that's used usually for stitching/needlepoint between the liner and the crocheted bag. I also like that heavy canvas like though I think it's polyester quarter inch strap material that I get a Jo-Ann's fabrics. You can easily make a crochet strap and then sew it to the polyester strap
i also used reclaimed fabric for lining a knit and crochet bag, but i went with old cargo pants. I used the thick waistband (minus the belt loops) to line the crochet straps, and I attached one of the pockets to the lining so I didn't have to knit or crochet one from scratch!

My gran had me hem the edges of liner with wide stitches, so i can crochet that thread to the bag, bc a small hook would fit under the wide thread spacing.But I'm a dinosaur, so its an old way of doing it.
I love the twill tape idea. I will have to try it. I normally line my straps with grosgrain ribbon, but that requires the extra step of sewing it on. I have always lined my bags with fabric, and I usually add internal pockets for phone, keys, etc.

I used cotton yarn running with my acrylic yarn to reinforce the straps. I then lined it with fabric. I bought some plastic canvas which i covered in the same fabric to put in the bottom of the bag and to give it more shape. I also added a pocket at the top. I hand sewed it all. 🧶😊
Great idea about tape for handle plus crocheting around it.. I made a bag but the handle stretched and it was spoilt. I will undo the handle and trim of bag and redo it your way because I love the bag.
Just discovered your channel and it came at just the right time as I am making 2 crochet bags. The tutorial I watched shows to add a lining, and the handle is made separately and then added to the bag. I love your idea of using the twill tape---genius! Thank you for this video and those tips ! I am excited to try them out. About the trading on the lining, if you don't have chalk, you can use an erasable pen. It marks better than ball tips and disappears with heat, so flat iron, steam or just by rubbing it, it leaves no traces its great.
Hi I hope you still check comments on older videos: if you want your Gran to be able to carry small items and have a stretchy bag all at once you could simply add a (zippered) fabric pocket on the inside, sewn to the upper edge, for this one I think trapezoid shape would be the best so it would neatly hang down :-)

What if I wanted to do a strap like the original pattern with the knot at the top ...with 2 strings ? Does that make sence ...would I still use twill tape
I’m not someone that sews but couldn’t you have the bobbin thread one colour and the machine thread another? That way you can match the thread to both the lining and the bag. Some useful tips for me to try on My bag I’m completing at the moment. Thanks for the video. 🦘🐨👋🏻

I always add lining to my crochet projects (purses, bags). Lining just tends to add strength and durability, and a little flair. You did great 👍🏾 😊, give yourself some credit, mom will love this forever because it was made with love 💗 😊

This is perfect, it popped up on my feed in such a timely manner. I’m about halfway thru a striped crotchet bags of “milk cotton “ kit that was a Mothers Day gift from MY daughter. I hadn’t thought to line it, since it’s the first one I’ve made, but it will be so much more useful. Thanks for a simple, great video! I know your mom and grandma loved your thoughtfulness.
Tip for newbies: just like its not recommended using black yarn to start cos its harder to see, black lining has been a pain in the a** for my eyes 😂 Ive only every "made" one bag, still havent finished it cos I hate working on it. I used this method with a few differences and different plans, but all hand sewn cos I have no machine. What I was doing different: I got a wider tape/ribbon thingy thats for straps to sew the crochet sides onto (while hemming the strap so it looks nicer). So one side (the outer) will be crochet, and the inner will be that sturdier cloth. The tote bag is for school stuff so I wanted it to be sturdier, also possibly add a bit more padding under the shoulder but idk if that would make it uncomfily bulky. For the lining I planned to add a SC border to integrate/hide the transition more, or sew it also with the yarn, aswell as the strap, to hide my shaky sewing lines lol 😂
If you don’t know how to sew you might consider making your bag with 2mm polyester macrame cord- it comes in many colors and is very sturdy- doesn’t stretch like yarn!
I only lined one crochet bag, and I didn't have my current sewing machine. I had a vintage Singer machine with a wobbly needle 😅 I think I would probably hand-stitch it if I did it again.

Ensuring that your audience can understand what the speaker is saying is the absolute minimum thing an instructional video maker needs to accomplish. Assuming that she wants to grow her channel, she needs to know that there is a portion of the population who have auditory issues that mean music playing while someone is speaking interferes with their ability to understand what that person is saying. As to whether or not I should have been nicer, I have found that being too nice when asking someone online to consider changing their way of doing things tends to accomplish nothing. Nice, sweet, gentle comments generally get ignored. In my experience, comments that explain clearly and frankly what the issue is stand a better chance of getting noticed and considered. The fact that the video creator acknowledged my constructive feedback illustrates how effective this strategy can be.
I like the way you explained and did the strap and lining. I will try this method. Last time I made a granny square bag, I used a canvas bag for the straps and lining. Crocheted the squares around it and it works great too. Also not expensive.

So much easier to line the bag before folding and I always add a slider to straps so stretching wouldn’t be a problem

I would just add a strand of a strong cotton yarn to your main yarn for bottom of bag and strap, crochet with both at once. Problem solved.

I like to tack down the corners of the lining into the corners of the bag. Saves pulling the lining out with any items in the bag.
