I was really excited to prepare for and perform well in this tournament... but sadly it has not gone how I expected at all. Shared some thoughts from the heart at the end.
I love that, in recent recaps (really, since restarting your road to GM series), you've kept to being positive about the future, even if you're disappointed with your results. I actually couldn't watch some of the later R2GM episodes in the first installment because my heart hurt for you when I did. Your attitude is everything, and even if you don't feel it, as a viewer, I've noticed a significant improvement there- belief that you can do it. Keep it up, Levy; your viewers will be here through the ups and downs!
Levy, part of the silent majority here - I never comment. But I'm here to remind you that we are a majority, we the people inspired by you. I had not played chess in decades, but your videos got me playing again. I'll never be close to as good as you, but I have my fun and enjoy games with friends. I watch some recaps of the top GMs that you make, but my favourite are the videos from this road to GM series. I would never in 100 years get the perspective of a top player (as you said yourself, better than millions of players, worse than a couple thousand) trying to break into the next level, and it is amazing. So I'm just reminding you, for every bad comment and micro psycho analysing from their arm-chairs, bunch of people who never tried to excel at literally nothing in life... For everyone of those there are hundreds or thousands of people like me, supporting you from the back, quietly, being inspired by your content, your love of spreading the joy of chess and your love of the game. Take care, man. And thank you.
I am one of those silent viewers. I get you dude. Briefly I am a middle-aged guy who in his youth played a load of Chess. Got quite good. Represented my country at school-boy level. Even won a couple of tournaments, podium finishes. But I plateaued. Became a decent club player but then drifted away from the game. The Internet got me back into casual play but then an unpleasant life event broke me. Medically diagnosed as depressed. I came out the other side but the 'black dog' still visits. I stay away from competitive, live play as I struggle in that environment now. So I can empathize with you. All I can say to you is "Dal ati". Welsh for keep going. It's all any of us can do. And, for what it's worth, I enjoy your content. So thank you for what you do.
Really sorry to hear that, I struggle too, currently pretty bad, but I got into world of professional chess (not as a player, I didn't even know how Knight moves) when i first saw the finale between Ding and Nepo in 2023, the emotions of players, the reaction of the commentators intrigued me, there was something interesting in that, shortly after I discovered Levy's channel and this amazing dude introduced me to the world and lore of Magnus, Hikaru, showed me the whole interesting and fun side of chess doing all his interesting, funny and inspiring content, really got me invested in his Road to GM! and it's thanks to Levy that I made a decision to just learn chess, to finally understand what's going on in all the game recaps etc. 2024 made my "black dog" lot more aggresive, stubborn, that's the year i realised I was really scared of it and that it's a life threatening beast, but it was the world of chess, doing lessons, playing games, watching all this content that occupied my mind to the point I could forget about it for hours, I'm currently trying to heal, family and friends are helping me, looking after, but I can say with full honesty that thanks to Levy I now have a hobby, developing into a passion, that I really like and that he kinda helped me with going through my darkest and toughest so far time in my life, so I'm rooting for this guy with all my heart and I hope to see him some day finally get his dream come true, he trully deserves it and it's incredible to see how much work he's putting in all that. @GothamChess you've got this man, sooner or later, I know that.
Your openness about what you're going through IS valuable. As a parent of a son who loves chess and music, I appreciate seeing you suffering from nerves and anxiety and then having the courage to talk about it. When his next concert or the state scholastic chess tournament comes around, I know he's better able to accept and deal with nerves BECAUSE he watches these videos and understands that what he's experiencing is normal.
Dude, whatever you do…don’t quit. I am loving this series ever since your road to GM announcement. You are very blessed to have the job you have, your wife, and your love for the game. No matter what, don’t quit.
When you said: "Do I believe I'll win? Hell no, but I'll try my best." I was so happy. It shows growth I think in terms of your reaction to the stress.
That shows no growth, if you don't think you'll win why even bother? He will never gain elo again thinking like that, always gonna be used to get farmed
@@yodakazam You uneducated fellow who has no intelligence. He meant to grow in mentality as in diligence. Gotham won't ever back down. The opponent is strong, but he will try his best. He knows that his chances of winning are slim, and he is still willing to fight. This means that he CARES. Grow up, learn about the convoluted adult world, and then comment.
First time commenter here. As a solid 800, I’m very qualified to give you chess advice. So here’s my thoughts. You are absolutely awesome. I don’t care what you think about yourself or what rank you are in the world. I’m cheering for you win or lose, always. You may not see yourself this way, but to me, you are my favorite sports team but for chess. And just like with my favorite teams, they have ups and downs. It’s so normal to be stressed or feel this greater pressure but your rating isn’t why we root for you. It’s not because you are the best but because you are trying to be the best you can be. And as a fan, that’s kickass to see. You are awesome and you should know I think you are awesome. And I know you will get that “championship” because you are an absolute fiend for the game. You love it at a level I’m not even sure I’d be able to comprehend in my lifetime and that’s why you will get there. Doesn’t need to be this year or even this decade. I’ll watch all the games and cheer you on win or lose. So head up and keep going. If ya get a nervous breakdown, throw up on the board, blunder a million times, won’t change my perspective of you in the slightest. You got this my GOAT
Watching with my two boys right now and we love what you're doing Levy! You've reignited my love for chess and got my young boys excited to learn more and to start playing. Don't let the negativity and scrutiny get to you - you were so close in this game and hearing your journey is inspiring to us! I'm not a great chess player but I'm a runner who at 42 is getting in the mix with my young boys and seeing them gain a love for running even as I push myself to be the best I can. It's a lot harder than when I was younger! Lean into the suffering a bit, lean away from all of the voices other than the deepest one inside of you, and you'll experience a deeper kind of joy and learning, GM or not.
Hi Levy, this message is from one of those who stay silent most of the time. I’m jumping in not to tell you what to do, but to express my gratitude for giving it all. I admire people that go after their dreams and you are one of those people. It is truly inspirational and motivating. I wish I could have a 5min chat with you someday to share my own life experiences regarding going after dreams. In the end, you’ll be there. Hope world let us meet someday. Cheers my friend
I wish I knew the exact right words to tell you Levy, but I don’t and I don’t think anyone has them. All I can say is this: I’ve never been a really big fan of chess. Sure I learned how to play as a younger person (I don’t think was a small child), and I’ve only really started enjoying the game through my college days. Recently I’ve been denied from a bunch of vet schools even though it’s my dream and I’ve been working towards it everyday for the past 4 years. I’d felt like I’ve lost my purpose in life. I can’t relate to you exactly, but I can sympathize with that feeling of grief after not performing the way you know you can. I may just be a name on a screen, but the person behind this account believes in you Levy. You’re awesome, and my opinion on that isn’t going to change regardless of what does or doesn’t happen. Thank you for sharing your story with us Levy! It takes a huge amount of courage to be this vulnerable with such a large audience. We’re rooting for you Levy! You are strong, and you will make it. Thank you for letting us come along for the ride!
Two things can be true at once, you can be top 3500 in the world (the top 1% of all players) and still look like a scrub against better players. The nba has 500 players they are the 1% of the 1%, but the worst nba player looks like a scrub compared to the best nba player. "Comparison is the theif of joy"
Levi, as one of the 'silent viewers', I want to say that i gind you brave sharing this story with its ups ans downs and your genuine thoughts. Your content is always great, but to dare to share that somtimes it doesn't go to well is another level. Respect! I hope you're able to realise this is a part of the process and evolve, regardless if you make GM or not!
Levy - do you understand how talented you are as a narrator and storyteller? I honestly don't understand half the chess that is being played, but I am always entertained because of the extra narration / analysis / hilarious jokes you add to the stream. I will keep following your chess journey for a long time, GM or not (rooting for you though, I think you deserve it for the chess you play and what you have done for the chess scene). Thanks Levy
bro any human that's worth a damn is wishing you the best and hoping you win. Anyone who doesn't fit that format their opinions are literally worthless and they don't matter. What matters is you and your health and love for the game and your content and your family and friends. don't let the stuff that doesn't matter ruin your passion because it doesn't matter it really doesn't. You have helped bring the love of chess back to people of multiple generations. I'm not trying to glaze either lol but you brought it back for me and in turn my son. I play with an 82 year old man when im bartending before it gets busy of course. Watching your tutorial videos has made it so i went from 689 to 1700 biltz online. Play because you love it play for you man i hope you see this because i mean every bit brother been watching your vids since you had 150 thousand subs. Much love!
As a first time commenter, this is incredibly inspiring. What you said about “this is my brain” is so accurate to the point that I don’t think people understand. You do NOT have an easy job, and I’ll always be happy to support you. Go Levy!
Hey Levy, in keeping with what you said, this is my first comment under one of your videos. I love the Road to GM series. On the one hand, One totally get excited and watch the videos like you would read a thriller series. On the other hand, it's absolutely inspiring because you can follow your journey live and see what it means to work for your dream and want to get to the top of the sport. Many people forget that it is an extreme journey and that many factors play a role. Self-confidence, etc. are also part of it. And it is normal that the path is like a rollercoaster and is not linear. Defeats and difficult phases are part of the process, it's the only way to grow personally and learn. As I said, being able to experience all of this live is inspiring and may open some people's eyes. I hope you read this comment and keep it up! Not only because this series is absolutely great and we want to see you reach your goal, but also because you will grow in phases like this! Believe in What you dream of and do not care what others might think! greetings from Germany
I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I got into chess 2 years ago seeing your videos. After 2 years of continuously playing online today I hit 1000 elo
@@martingaming6969 bots don't really count in my opinion. They play like engines the first few moves and then starts blundering left and right. Try playing humans
Hi Levi, Huge fan here and wanted to encourage you to continue to keep being you! Haters gonna hate. Let them. Focus on you and your own journey. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) from Chicago and love how real you are in talking about anxiety. You normalize what others are going through on a daily basis and we need more mental health awareness! Also I was trained early in career in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and it’s super helpful for triggers of any kind especially anxiety triggers. Look into it and see what you think. Normal CBT, Exposure, ERP, ACT are all proven not as effective to get rid of triggers that deep engrained. I wish you the best on your journey forward and I hope you give EMDR a chance. It changed not only my own personal life but hundreds of my patients lives as well.
My husband watches you avidly and I’ve just sat and watched your latest video . I’m a 60 year old Mum of 2 boys around your age. All I wanted to do was give you a great big hug. Don’t loose heart 🤗
It's crazy how Gotham is almost at 6 million subs, I have been a long time viewer since 2021 when he reached 1 mil subs, and he brought me back to chess during the chess boom in december 2022, and this series is another milestone for the GothamChess channel and for Levy personally, thank you for your inspiring and educational and entertaining content for us, we hope you can always sacrifice THE ROOOOOK!!!!!
Levi you're doing great. I've played chess for 25+ years and your content breathes life into the game. You are doing awesome on your GM journey and the silent majority is on your side.
Rooting for you, never played chess ever but I genuinely binge watch your videos. I love the content and you make me want to learn chess. Hope you continue to make strides and grind!
Ive never been a particular fan of your channel, finding it too "populist" and "entry level". But this video has really won me over. I LOVED your honesty and your willingness to share your doubts and fears. It strikes home in so many ways because it's so relatable. Everything resonated with me on this one, and i thank you for being brave enough to share that side of chess that we all know but aren't always willing to admit or talk about. The feeling of, "wait a minute, I've played this opening hundreds of times, amd im now list in 12 moves????" Really struck a chord. This is great content. Im now a fan, and i want you to win. It may not be tomorrow, it may not even be this month. But i think youre got ng to get there with hard work and patience. Youre in the forest now - but you'll find your way out!
Levy we all believe in you, dont lose hope we'll always be here for you :) you are the inspiration of my and millions of other chess newbs , i wish we were more like you
Thank you for showing us your mistakes and your struggles. Thank you for sharing how to learn from our mistakes and our struggles. Thank you for being authentic. I've stumbled back into chess after years away, and I started looking for content to watch online to help improve my skills. I've watched a lot of different content creators (including some of the folks who have not been kind through this tournament series), and I watched them once or twice. I've been streaming your videos back to back. Keep shining your light.
Hey Levy! It's hard to express how inspirational your channel and your book has been for my chess journey. Because of you I went back to the board after a few years of playing hardly at all. And that you openly talk about emotional and psychological side and struggle of the game is priceless. Thank you so much for being an inspiration for millions of us!
Hey Levy, keep your head up. I discovered your channel two weeks ago and I’ve never played chess in my life. I’m 39 years old. And now bc of you I learned to play and I’m having a blast trying to learn and get better. Thanks to you!
Hey Gotham. I´m one of those spectators you called who is only watching and not commenting. But now I feel like I want to say something. I´m watching your videos for a year now, I came for how to lose at chess and stayed for "Road to GM". I just think you are an amazing chess player and we all as spectators believe in you, that you can do it. Don´t give up and try to believe in yourself to. All the best for the remaining two games and I´m looking forward to the next awesome videos. Greetings from Germany
As an old man , with a lot of ups and downs during my life , I can totally feel you , and one thing I have learned in my years here is that sometimes you just have bad days or even weeks , it’s hard for all of us to deal with pressure and especially when the world is watching , so can’t imagine that pressure , but just know you are an inspiration to a lot of us and I do hope you continue your journey to GM , win, lose or draw, hopefully this is just a bump in the road and there is light at the end of the tunnel! I don’t comment a lot but I for one enjoy your candor and your commitment to improving the world of chess!! Good luck to you Levy!!
It's so sad to hear what you said at the end... We're really rooting for you, Levy! And we don't really care if you win or lose, we are excited to see your journey, to listen to your thought, to hear your emotions about the games. You gave so many people the motivation to play chess, including me. And I know it sucks, but It's okay to have bad tournaments, it's okay to lose sometimes! First of all, it is experience. We love you and believe in you anyway. I know, easier said than done, but some people in the comments just don't deserve your attention, so you should be so concerned about what they write... Anyways, ups and downs do happen, and that's okay. We're rooting for you, but mostly I just really want you to enjoy the games, doesn't matter if you win, lose or draw, not thinking about any comments. We love you, Levy❤
i love how much i’ve grown in chess since thanksgiving and i owe so much of it to these videos, i actually can identify what’s happening in a game within the first few moves which i never thought would happen
The very first chess tutorial i watched on yt was yours levy, and now its been 2 years since i started playing chess, now with an undying passion for it. You've allowed me and countless others in learning and enjoying this game. It'll only take a second to look arounf and notice how much you've accomplished. So keep powering through levy! Win loss or draw, we'll always be right here cheering you on. Aight get outta here
Levy, i have noticed when you are faced with failure you beat yourself up way too much. Failure sucks, and is not an enjoyable experience. But this is just a momentary failure and not like you have been failing for months and months on end. Even then, let us say you were. Accept that failure. Figure out why you failed. Address that to a point where you truly understand the nature of the failure and come up with a plan to try and counter it. Do what is needed to get yourself right then get back on the horse.mayne you fill fail again. Maybe you will succeed right away. But do not give up too soon. Remove the negative self talk my man. You got this.
You're missing the entire point of what he was saying. He doesn't want or need advice on what to change to try and improve, he's heard all of it already. He's not beating himself up with failure at all. He's just losing passion for playing chess, and that's fine.
@retrobow6762 definitely agree with this. People have left thousands of comments saying stuff exactly like this. it comes from a good place but it's not that easy to change your entire makeup as a person
Best of luck in the next rounds Levy. You brought me back to chess several years ago. I even started playing in tournaments myself with your caro kann. I hope to keep seeing you play fighting games in what is also one of my favorite openings.
Thanks for being willing to be vulnerable and share your story. I'm going through my own process right now, and even hearing the lows is inspiring because it helps to know I'm not alone.
Levy, our choice to be chess players takes a heavy toll on us. I recently started studying seriously again, and even so, the defeats continue to happen and sometimes threaten my willpower. Even so, I will continue the process, trusting that everything in this life always passes, whether good or bad. You are going through a difficult phase, but believe me, it WILL pass and you will learn a lot. I am rooting for you from Brazil and I believe that you will become a GM. Keep going! Strength! We are soldiers in this battle and the best choice we can make is to keep fighting.
First time commenter. Been playing chess here and there since I was a teenager. When I worked at the airport we used to play in the break room while waiting for planes. I have been watching every game in this series. Win, Lose or Draw what you achieve is beyond the result!
You are such an inspiration to chess players across the globe, and showing your feelings about the emotional aspect of chess takes an immense amount of courage. I, and millions of your viewers, believe that you can definitely get to GM one day, and your passion for the game is contagious. Thank you so much for doing what you do.
I love you levy, you got me back into chess and I look forward to your videos every day, stop dissecting your motivation so much and give yourself a break!
Great content as always, Levy! Your analysis inspires me to improve my own approach to chess and share what I learn. Thanks for being such a legend in the community!
A great starting place with mental preparation is to establish the right attitude. One does not strive to win, to play well, to survive, or in any other way. Striving is not playing. It's a distraction. Distractions are not helpful. Thus, you must control your environment to have the time, quiet, food, sleep, etc. to be your best. Once you know you are not going to strive, you will naturally ask what will I be doing. The answer is simple, playing chess. Did Capablanca stress over beating Alekhin? No, he just played. The results flowed naturally from his superior capabilities and understanding of the game. Levy and Hans both have good calculation skills, so the basics of what makes a titled player are there. How they handle difficult positions or when there is little time and when their opponent is very good, those need to be set aside as distractions. Phttt, evil. Just playing the game, with attention to the clock of course, is all one need do. fini
Hi Levy, started watching a few weeks ago and although I’m new and haven’t played for years, your videos have me hooked on being better at chess. Thanks bro.
17:58 I love you too levy you taught me how to play chess and in many of your videos I don't comment and you made my elo reach 1000 I love you bro you're so helpful 🙏. Edit: I MADE A BRILLIANT 2 HOURS AGO OMG 😳 😱
Hey levy, i dont know if you will read this. I dont have anything to say to make you feel better but i just want to say that i know how it feels to an extent. I am rated 1800 Fide and haven't really played the game for the past two years. I liked chess at the start but eventually it became a hectic thing like I constantly felt that i will be criticized if i didnt win against someone who i really i should have or win a position i really should have won in. There were times when I was a 1100 and lost to all the unrated players in a tournament. There were also times i won against a FM but the worse days really outshone. This game is hard man. Like the highs are high but the lows are so damn low. I really hope you pull through and find the passion for this game again. I wish you the best my man, you got this.
Hey levy I am one of those silent viewers but man you gotta keep pushing and be an inspiration like you’ve been to me and a lot of other people I quit chess a couple of years ago and your content brought me back.
Thanks for sharing Levy. I know it sucks to lose but appreciate the honesty and humility. Keep your head up. You've got a lot of people rooting for you 🫡
@@Alexander-dt2eq Hans is not going to make levy a gm all of a sudden. Thats just not the way it works. It would be a couple training sessions with a great player, who doesnt seem to be a great coach tho
Hey, Levy! I’m the one who don't usually write comments, but I felt like I should say something this time. I’ve been really enjoying your GM series, and honestly, I’m rooting for you to make it to GM - it feels like watching a movie where the hero has to win. But I also get that this isn’t a movie for you. At the end of the day, my opinion or perception doesn’t matter - you’re chasing the GM title for yourself, and we’re just lucky you’re sharing that journey with us. You don’t owe me - or anyone else - good games, your motivation, or anything, really. If you make it to GM, it’ll be amazing content. If you don’t, it’ll still be amazing content. So, don't worry about us) Just keep doing your thing, and we’ll be here to watch your cool videos.
Hey Levy i am another silent viewer, I was going to write about my experience with this in soccer playing at a high level but i realized you’ve heard stories like that a million times. The only thing i want you to remember from my comment is that you have so so so many people who LOVE you and your videos. And support you in whatever you are doing, if this is something eating at you too much and given the circumstances you don’t want to continue, don’t! The millions of supporters you have will still support you! If this is something you want to push through just take baby steps to get better in ways you know will help! We will still support you!!! You have made the lives of my friends and me so much better because of you sharing chess and your journey. No matter what, we will still support you! 😊
Hi Levy, one of your silent viewers here. Thank you for opening up about things at the end here, but also throughout the whole of this series. I've grown to love this game so much more by experiencing it through your lens - your passion is infectious. I've learned so very much from you. I don't think I even come here for the chess anymore, I'm just here for you. I haven't even played a game in the last year. I'm sorry to hear you are having a bad run at things so please take care of yourself first. It must be incredibly demanding to publish the amount of content that you do, and to put yourself so forward out into the public eye. Regardless of tournament or competitive standing- you will always be the person who helped me love this game. You will always be the best teacher and coach that a bozo could ask for. If I wanted to watch someone win tourneys- I'd watch pre-blue jeans Carlson or maybe Hikaru. That's not what this is about. I don't want to watch their games because I wouldn't even understand them without your teaching and explanation. I started at 800. You helped me peak at 1200 when I was active. The best coach is not the player who is the best at the game. The best coach is one who inspires their pupils to give their best to the game. You are remarkable at exactly that, and I don't demand anything else from you. I wouldn't have fallen in love with your channel if I didn't think you were highly intelligent, brilliant at communicating, a riveting commentator, and dedicated to a fault. There is nothing else to prove in my eyes. You're the GOAT in this new- exciting and horrible at the same time, internet space. Don't let it get you down. Thank you for all you do and get outta here.
Levy, I for one really enjoy the balance you have been the well thought-out, prepared, professional analysis of your games and the personal 'inside the brain' discussion showing the human side of the battle. I hope you keep going with this type of content, but if not thank you for the journey!
You should really see a sports psychologist. They can completely transform how you approach your game. Most professional and even some collegiate atheletes have one
@@mikov6486 levy is in denial if he doesn't think he needs some help though, idk exactly what help because I don't know exactly what goes on in his mind but he clearly states it's mostly phycological then complains about people saying he needs a sports psychologist... I don't envy his position and it's kinda rude in a way to tell a person on the internet like you need this specific help because you don't fully understand them as a person but you don't grow as a person and overcome your adversities by just living life as you are and hoping you improve, there has to be some change. I'm sure he's working hard and I sympathise with him, it's tough out there, I personally think the first step is to accept you have this problem and seek help, but that's for him to decide.
We're with you no matter what! I think we've all experienced the frustration of struggling to win a game. You're awesome for having the determination to keep going, especially with so many people watching. Lots of people just quit after going from 1000 to 900 and I can imagine the pressure at your level is just insane. Always rooting for you through thick and thin!!!❤
First time commenter and I just want to say a few things. I picked up the game again because of you, and you have restarted my interest and love for the game. You make unedited videos for almost 6 million people and you don't let anything get you down. You are truly yourself and that is why people love you. As a musician I understand the stage fright and worrying about what everyone is thinking and how you look and how you preform, but there are more people cheering you on than you know! Selfishly, I want you to continue your journey because just watching you talk about and breakdown games has truly inspired me to learn more about the game and the road that it takes to get to where you are. I know it is your life and you should do what you want, but no matter what you decide to do there are always people that will love you and support you. In, during, and even after the game is over. Anyways, I love your content and appreciate the inspiration that you have been to me. :)
I'm going to speak very seriously but Levy does what YOU want to do, not what others want or what your image wants to show. The more you are fulfilled and happy with what you do, the more it will please because most of your community is not there to see you become GM or whatever, they are there because they like your content no matter what you do (maybe not either but you get the idea). I hope you make the right decision after this tournament if you make one ❤❤
hey levy, as a person who also usually doesn’t comment: i think it is wonderful that you share this process with your viewers and i’m sure it’s really difficult to share your games even when it’s been a hard tournament. i think a lot of people appreciate that especially. sadly usually most of the people who comment regularly are people that don’t have the nicest things to say and the others tend to stay more quiet. i started playing chess only in september of last year and i’ve been taking weekly lessons since october because i’m finding so much joy in it. your content and you have also been steady companions since then (your book btw was also the first chess book i read! it helped a lot i really think it’s so well written). i play chess only as a hobby and obviously i’ve never played in a tournament but even so, i recognize how much of an emotional sport chess is and how easy it is to psych yourself out. some people find joy in tearing others down, dissecting every move and criticizing it, some people do it without realizing the impact it has in others. i think it’s good that you’re talking about how it is affecting you. some people, like you said, might take it again as something to ridicule but i think it shows strength and i’m sure many others do too. i’m grateful for you!
I wanna share a similar experience, just unrelated to chess, u know i loved coding, designing systems and learning new things in cs and in general, but things have changed, i am working as if i am a slave , meeting deadlines, no passion left, impress manager, just trying to meet ends, still i have hope to jump out from this pool, and find that innner kid who really enjoyed whatever he did
The end-talk was so sad to hear.. I really like your content, I'm thrilled everytime a new recap is being made and this is one of my favorite journeys to follow. Don't lose hope, and I'm sure you'll make it❤. I watch these games and I see that you play very well, every journey has its rough patch and I'm sure it will get better. Looking forward to see where this journey takes you❤
First time commentsing on one of your videos. I have been studying chess all day and wanted some easy entertaining chess videos to watch. Watching this video was perfect. You are an natural in making chess interesting and living without being to burdensom to understand all the technical details, keep up the good work and good luck on becoming a GM 👍
Levy as a casual chess player but a former tournament tennis player I relate so much to what you were describing at the end of this video. Knowing what you did wrong, why it went wrong, and that it will probably go wrong again is an incredibly disempowering feeling. I respect your courage so much to have this level of vulnerability with those raw moments. The only person who ever saw me in those moments was my dad. I couldn't even let my best friends or coaches see me confront that wall, let alone strangers. Also just think of all the people offering advice as overprotective mothers. They want what's best for you, they just have no idea what that is. Good luck man, I really dig your content.
Mate win or loose, you're still a legend for me for getting me back to chess when i first discovered you a bit before the chess boom that happened a few years ago. I will forever be grateful for you. And im sure many think like this as well. My best wishes are with you. Every day i am excited to see about your matches and im still hopeful that you will get things going.
Man you do need a sports psychologist. Saying that’s just my brain is like me as a 250 saying “well these are just my openings” Come on big dog. We believe in you
oh dang. Levy - love your content tons bro. I have played in 3 or 4 OTB tournaments and I TOTALLY get it. Classical is SUCH a different thing than online even rapid. I had a game where I was up two pieces, maybe +4.5, but I couldn't find the winning idea, and the my opponent kept pressing. I was down to maybe 20 min, and just panicking. I managed to draw in the end and I was happy with that result. You content is so great. I have LOVED guess the ELO. I have LOVED the road to GM stuff. Thanks for putting your self out there. Praying you can finish the tourny with a win in your pocket
The comments need to stop being soft with this guy as it isn't helping. People become GMs because they focus on it 100%. They either use savings, parents money or sponsorship to go it full time. Levy runs his youtube channel, his chess courses, his merch, commentates on other channels, focuses on his family and basically does anything but working towards GM for 90% of his time. If he REALLY wanted to be a GM rather than use it to grift money out of you losers he'd shut down or sell Chessly, close his youtube channel and not commentate on other channels. He'd sacrifice his time with his family and he'd spend 2-3 years not earning whilst he prepared and took part in tournaments. The fact he hasn't done any of that and even does recap videos daily on every game he plays during a norm tournament shows he's either not serious or he thinks he's better than he is and can win without sacrificing his life. It's beyond a joke now. Any twat who pretends he wants to be a GM whilst sacrificing nothing is just a grifter and you lot are his marks. Go on Pin me asshole, tell them why I'm wrong whilst flogging your latest half price sale on shitty chess courses rather than preparing for the next game in the tournament you are literally playing right now
These are the comments he needs to see. Either he IS just playing for content in which case you are right or he is blind to the route to success (which I doubt) and needs a dose of reality
Can't he both want to be a GM and have other responsibilities like a family and TH-cam. Chess is something Levy loves and where is their shame in pursuing the GM title? How you going to hate on a man for following his dreams? I think it's a false dichotomy that a person must be focus on something 100 percent or not at all. Also to say Levy is not working towards GM most of his time is crazy, this guy is constantly playing/thinking about chess. Analyzing his games in a TH-cam video like this is actually very constructive to getting better. What is their to "grift" from trying to become a GM?
@frogfacts8091 He can want it but he won't get there unless he commits to actually working on it, which he currently doesn't do... which is fine of course. He makes a very good living from what he does and has done wonderful things for the chess community. However, if he is genuine about his road to GM, then he must realise that he won't get there whilst splitting his attention like he does and it shows in his thoughts after each game - its a route that he is not ready to let go of yet but knows deep down that he won't achieve, given the other things going on in his life.

Cool

Keep going, Levy!
It's so refreshing to see so much positivity and support amidst all the trolls. I hope you're better these days, wishing you all the best
Lovely comment
Always powerful to read these experiences.
Thank you for sharing this, makes me happy that Levy gets to hear about the impact he has on more people then he knows
Dude, whatever you do…don’t quit. I am loving this series ever since your road to GM announcement.
You are very blessed to have the job you have, your wife, and your love for the game. No matter what, don’t quit.

Gold comment man, I am sure there is a vet school which is going to accept you :)

Two things can be true at once, you can be top 3500 in the world (the top 1% of all players) and still look like a scrub against better players. The nba has 500 players they are the 1% of the 1%, but the worst nba player looks like a scrub compared to the best nba player. "Comparison is the theif of joy"

What matters is you and your health and love for the game and your content and your family and friends. don't let the stuff that doesn't matter ruin your passion
because it doesn't matter it really doesn't. You have helped bring the love of chess back to people of multiple generations.
I'm not trying to glaze either lol but you brought it back for me and in turn my son. I play with an 82 year old man when im bartending before it gets busy of course.

i mean every bit brother been watching your vids since you had 150 thousand subs. Much love!
As a first time commenter, this is incredibly inspiring. What you said about “this is my brain” is so accurate to the point that I don’t think people understand. You do NOT have an easy job, and I’ll always be happy to support you. Go Levy!
Hey Levy,
in keeping with what you said, this is my first comment under one of your videos.

Hi Levi,
Huge fan here and wanted to encourage you to continue to keep being you!

I am rated 1800 Fide and haven't really played the game for the past two years. I liked chess at the start but eventually it became a hectic thing like I constantly felt that i will be criticized if i didnt win against someone who i really i should have or win a position i really should have won in. Possible? GM Levy is... inevitable.
Hans made an offer, so yes its inevitable
Hi Levy, I will unsilence myself, I believe in you, having one bad tournament is nothing, coming out better is all that matters!
Still waiting for you to make a queen move over another piece like a chatbot would do
You should really see a sports psychologist. They can completely transform how you approach your game. Most professional and even some collegiate atheletes have one
Bro did NOT watch the video
@@krypt1ccc739he is going to collaborate with Hans Niemann. Check Hans' upload today. He offered to coach Levy and Levy accepted.
@@krypt1ccc739 yeah it’s not that deep, I just figured, as anyone would, if you are struggling with the mental aspect of a sport……….
28:02 I'm not gonna console you or motivate you, but remember it's just ONE tournament. Like remember that magnitude please and don't leave Road to GM

Are you assuming my gender? That's offensive! )))

@МикитаЧебанов sorry I means ladies and gentlemen and everyone else

I'm going to speak very seriously but Levy does what YOU want to do, not what others want or what your image wants to show. The more you are fulfilled and happy with what you do, the more it will please because most of your community is not there to see you become GM or whatever, they are there because they like your content no matter what you do (maybe not either but you get the idea). I hope you make the right decision after this tournament if you make one ❤❤
Let's go Levy we're with you! Everything you desire can come true through hard work and self belief, keep it up man!
hey levy, as a person who also usually doesn’t comment: i think it is wonderful that you share this process with your viewers and i’m sure it’s really difficult to share your games even when it’s been a hard tournament. i think a lot of people appreciate that especially. sadly usually most of the people who comment regularly are people that don’t have the nicest things to say and the others tend to stay more quiet. i started playing chess only in september of last year and i’ve been taking weekly lessons since october because i’m finding so much joy in it. your content and you have also been steady companions since then (your book btw was also the first chess book i read! it helped a lot i really think it’s so well written). i play chess only as a hobby and obviously i’ve never played in a tournament but even so, i recognize how much of an emotional sport chess is and how easy it is to psych yourself out.
some people find joy in tearing others down, dissecting every move and criticizing it, some people do it without realizing the impact it has in others. i think it’s good that you’re talking about how it is affecting you. some people, like you said, might take it again as something to ridicule but i think it shows strength and i’m sure many others do too. i’m grateful for you!
You got this Levy! The GM norm is going to worth more with all these temporary setbacks!
I wanna share a similar experience, just unrelated to chess, u know i loved coding, designing systems and learning new things in cs and in general, but things have changed, i am working as if i am a slave , meeting deadlines, no passion left, impress manager, just trying to meet ends, still i have hope to jump out from this pool, and find that innner kid who really enjoyed whatever he did
Hikaru's content - levy
Levy's content - GRAND MOTHER
28:08 You need to win. I think you can do it.
Still getting winning positions a lot promising tbh
Mate win or loose, you're still a legend for me for getting me back to chess when i first discovered you a bit before the chess boom that happened a few years ago. I will forever be grateful for you. And im sure many think like this as well. My best wishes are with you. Every day i am excited to see about your matches and im still hopeful that you will get things going.
Sorry to see you sad 😢 Stay strong man, you can do it💪
Levy's left hand appears for the 1st time in the video 0:35
Levy's right hand appears for the 1st time in the video 2:27
now this is journalism
26:57 Reddit is also full of dudes screaming at the world from mom’s basement.
Reddit is just a very stupid place. 😂trust me, those guys are mad
The only problem is that you try to become a GM instead of just enjoying chess.
Hope you can grind it out and keep going for GM levy thoroughly enjoy watching all your videos trying to learn how to be better at chess
This was very enjoyable to watch, keep up the good work I hope you make it to GM. You’re an inspiration :)
Levi is slowly becoming a master at baiting opponents into checkmate.
master baiting
@Protheek LMFAO fcking genius 💀
We got WGM levy before gta 6
29:17 Get outta here
bro ur fire, stay put. Personally, love ur content, and it's amazing how u stay strong after so many negative stuff u had to listen to.
More power to you man!!! Keep up the grind💪
It’s more than possible! Pin a positive comment, Levy! 🙏🤝
Man you do need a sports psychologist. Saying that’s just my brain is like me as a 250 saying “well these are just my openings”
Come on big dog. We believe in you
Ignore this comment I’m just writing this because there is a group of girls staring at me and I’m pretending to be busy on my phone😭
Relatable. They act like I'm in the wrong bathroom or something
Tell them about en passant, they will kneel before you ;)
Protect this dude at all costs😂
😔 this one felt on a personal level
Bro tell them about queen's gambit
