I love these G-Wagens mainly due to the way the doors sound like when you shut them, they are so satisfying to listen to. Another reason I'd buy the G-Wagen is the exhaust sound (namely, the AMG G63 and the G55 AMG). Way to go, Zack!

The only car I've been in that felt as solid as a G-Wagen was a 1968 Rolls-Royce. I got to sit in one at a car show and man, those doors that feel like opening a bank vault and the locks that sound like a shotgun being racked closed. I'm partial to old ones before Mercedes started luxing them up.

The only reason I'd buy the G-wagen is this: 3 locking differentials! There aren t many cars that have that from the factory

Actually the old C Class W204 door has the same feeling when closing the door, like a vault!

I always thought they were a little ridiculous until I had the opportunity to drive one around for a couple days. It's unreal, the materials are so nice and luxurious, but the car rides and handles like a truck from the 1970's with a massive engine slapped onto it.... Which I guess is exactly what this car is. I loved it, if I could afford one I would daily it in a heartbeat! I had a smile on my face the entire time, and I've never driven a car that turned so many heads haha
Edit: This car reminded me of that Borat scene where he asks the car salesman if it comes with a pussy magnet... yes Borat, yes it definitely does lol.

While you may be able to buy a basic workhorse G-Wagen Europe, it has more or less the same reputation over this side of the pond nowadays. It’s a baller-mobile, and especially in Eastern Europe it’s popular with thugs and has a mafia image. I think I’ve seen maybe like 10 older non-Premium, non-AMG wagons ever, but take a walk through the city centre and you’ll see 5 AMG/Brabus/whatever puxury G-wagens in an afternoon. Poorest country in the EU, might I add, lol

Yo Zack... just writing you to tell you keep up the great work. I like your videos, even the cars I don't care about I still find myself watching. Everyone is not Doug Demero or Scotty Kilmer. It's refreshing to see you make your own TH-cam lane.
Keep cranking out the videos. Mad props

I test drove one of these at the Chicago Auto Show a couple years ago, went up a pretty steep incline. I was always impressed by the sound of the doors closing but disappointed to see at 4:53 that the driver door switches the paint is chipping offf

Around Munich, they are really popular with people in the lumber indusry and hunters. But there is a funny thing about them: A cheaper, more basic variant exists. However they are only sold to goverments. You can buy them only on the used car market, where they will carry a premium!

2019s an up have that small looking column shifter that other Mercedes Benz models have...worse than the joystick shifter, IMO. They could have just put a mechanical shifter in this SUV. Jeep still does mechanical shifters...well, they were kinda forced to.

I'm surprised there are so many built in ash trays in a 2016 vehicle. 🚬 Like you said, probably a carryover from the 1970s.

Timeless design of a military truck. I drool every time I see one in town. I think the V8 is smarter than the V12 and fits so much better. Thank you again for a good video. They make a Brabus G Wagon in Germany and one lists at $878,000. (Not kidding) Not like I have to worry about buying one ever but wow.

This is a great video. It makes me not want to buy this gen G wagon for as much money they go for. I’ve got a 2013 e350 that has all the same buttons, controls, and infotainment center. But I only paid $9k for the car, far from G wagon prices

People are buying depreciated ones and putting proper wheels and tires on them and using them like the designers intended.

I envy you, when I was your age my first experience with a Mercedes Benz was not a G wagen ,it was with an 80 300TD diesel wagon and it was slow as hell, but it did have a direct steering feel and oh those doors, we called them bank vault doors. See unfortunately the G wagen is the last of the over built Mercedes, the only thing that will let that rig down is that twin turbo engine, the 5.5L (actually 5.4L) was far more reliable. Frankly I use to love Mercedes Benz and still do but only the pre W140/R129 chassis vehicles, which that G wagen is a part of, the new ones just are too sketchy and full of electronics and plastic bits that break too easy and usually just after the warranty period is over.

G-Wagens are cool. It's almost a shame these became the Hollywood cruiser of choice because they're very good off-road. I want to get an old diesel manual G-Wagen and take it off-road like its designers intended. They're terrible to drive on road because they weren't designed to be driven on the road. I'm amazed how many rich people deign to drive such a trucklike vehicle when literally every luxury car is more comfortable.
I got to sit in a then-new one at a car show and was surprised by how narrow and cramped it was and how crammed-in all the luxury felt. The doors feel like bank vaults and you really feel like you're moving the rods when you push the button. The slam is unmatched and the locks sound like five shotguns being racked open. I love how square and archaic it looks. It's so unique that it doesn't look dated, it just exists in its own timeline.
The G-Wagen's differential locks have to be used in the order numbered on the buttons. You have to lock the center first to put it in true 4x4, then the back, then the front. The US Marine Corps have a few G-Wagens as fast attack vehicles. The 2018 redesign brought a wider body but the original stripped-down model is still being built for government customers. I think only the Lada Niva has been in production longer.
The G-Wagen was not initially sold in the US. It was brought in via the gray market and they were comparable to Land Rovers, being basically upscale Jeeps. For their Middle Eastern customers Mercedes started to put some more luxurious fittings in and US customers wanted a luxury 4x4. In 2002 Mercedes bought the rights from the importer Europa because they wanted that profit for themselves. By that time the G-Wagen had built a reputation as an exotic luxury 4x4 so MB kept selling it and even let AMG have a go at it. MB considered cancelling it a few times but demand was so high they decided to just add even more luxury and keep making more profit.

Completely unnecessary in America. It really stands out and makes a statement. That's exactly why the people who buy it, buy (or lease) it.

I am shopping for a 200 series Land Cruiser and used G Wagons are tempting for the same price. Factory portals is a nice plus of you're using it for overlanding. Not to mention being factory triple locked.

This car is not only in the US unnecessary, it’s the same here in Germany. A barely see some G-Wagens, because it’s a status symbol over here and I doubt it’s practicality in general. I guess just a few ones will see off road in there lifetime.

I'd prefer the 2013 to 2018 g63 amg If I had to buy the turbo charged international of the w463 generation. I currently own a 2013 g63 amg. Going back though, the 2013 to 2015 g550 is the best one to get with the na v8. Those engines last forever compared to the g wagons that are turbocharged
