  • Even though the G-Class from Mercedes-Benz is one of the most capable off-road vehicles out there, many are used for city driving so that's why we're keeping it on the pavement for this review. This truck really appealed to my wife so I thbought it would be interesting to let her drive it and find out why.

OK, some facts about the G:
Never ever take away the spare tire from the door. That's like cutting off the balls of the G. If you are too weak to open or close the door, you better buy a normal SUV and not the "Geländewagen"!
The Windows don't close automatically because the G is driven in some very, very rough places and there are situations you don't want an automatic which stops the window from going up like every automatic window do, if something comes between the glass and the frame. Consider there is a snake coming in or the paw of a lion - you want to hurt them and not a window, which stops ;-).
If you in the wild - and the G is made for this - you want need a bottleholder, which really holds the bottle under any conditions and this is what the "Basketball basket" does. If driven the G under conditions 90% of all cars (including normal Jeeps with exeption of the Wrangler rubicon) don't move an Inch and even there the bottle was stable in the holder.
If you have not enough power for the steering wheel, don't buy a G wagon. If seen 9 year old boys driving the G through rough terrain without problems - maybe only we from Austria (where the G wagon is built) can do this, because all of us look like Arnold Schwarzenegger (who is from Austria too) but I think every men out there should be able to do it ;-).
Another thing is the ESP. It's nice to have it under normal conditions but if you in a hurry and this thing nearly stops you in ever corner, you will reach the point, you find yourself looking for the "Switch off button". There is no button? Not really true. If you are able to drive the G, you can Switch on the center diff-lock. I know there is this Little sticker, which says, that you should only use the lockers in low gear but belive me, it will work in high gear and it will switch off the ESP and you will be able to go much faster through corners. But be carefull - if you switch on the middle locker, you also switch off ABS and so on. Only do it, if you really can drive a car! If you roll your car - not my fault - only try it, if you know what you do ;-).
Last not least: Don't call the G wagon a SUV. It is what it is - a "Geländewagen". It is harder, tougher, cooler and it's more a 4-wheel-pet than a car. It's not a "truck" it's a "drug". It makes you feel mighty and industructible. Be careful not to get rollicking ;-).
I like your anology with the watch. That takes it right through the point!

I have a 2016 G from a 2012. The window always annoyed me but makes sense idk. Mine is blue mystic metallic. I love how the tire looks on the back.

Good analogy. I like the part where you included your wife in the review. I am sure the mom perspective is very important for many buyers.

Enjoyed watching this review, nice touch having your wife drive it too.
Recently bought a KIA Sorento (auto diesel) which my wife mainly
drives for work, and I feel reassured she's in a safe , strong car.
However, I would love to own the Mercedes-Benz G Class G350 CDI
BlueTEC, but again with the diesel version! But like most, it would only
be possible with a lottery win lol. The purchase price and upkeep
    would be phenomenal.

I LOVE the fact that the G wagons have retained their box shape. Keeps it useful maximizing storage space out back when every one else is FWD sloping the back end. My only criticism is the vague steering. If MB could "tighten the driving feel"...Also, I'd like to have seen Brian park it in a standard garage. This is maybe the tallest SUV on the market. I'm not sure it's going to fit height wise in most standard residential garages.

    Hey Brian!
    Great video as always.
I really need your advice. I´m about to purchase a G-class andi live in Sweden, where gas and diesel is really expensive right now with the huge taxes. I´m really teased to put my money in the G63 but also afraid that it will be a real life nightmare on the MPG-scale and have me sell it a couple months ahead because of this. I´m also looking into the G350d which seems way more reasonable in some ways but the MPG shows that it actually isn´t that far from the G63 depending on how you drive it.. What`s your take on these two and how would you make a descision in this situation? Will drive city and highway mostly between 150 (mostly) - 600 miles (some months) a month.
    Thank you!!

I don’t think if you’re in the market for a G Class that MPG could be a factor. We don’t have the diesel version in North America so my money would be on the G63. Are you going for the new one?

    • @JakobKaizen
      @JakobKaizen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@EverydayReviews2022 I get your point, but it won´t be driven as a daily. That´s not what i plan at least. I´m not going for the new one, that´s way off my budget. I´m looking at the old body but the facelifted one from 2014 - 2018 ish. Is there any apparent choice in terms of resale value? Special Editions, particular specs etc?

Swedish here as well. Just bought a 2016 G63. Honestly it’s not much difference from 2013 to 2016.
But I can’t wait for it to arrive

Hooooooold on....Did you say that the gas mileage was decent? It's awful. I'm lucky if I get 12 MPG on the highway. Otherwise all is well.

I think you might have a bit of G-Wagon fever, this interior of this car is truly awful for the price point it is at. Yes it used to be a military vehicle but they have had 30 years to make it a non boat and they haven't bothered (i admire their ability to make 1000x revenue on tooling costs though)

    • @EverydayReviews2022

+Onoff314 I don't disagree with you in the price. The crazy fact is that around here in the West Coast, there's over a year waiting list to get the one. They definitely are a niche market.

MB tried to replace it with the GL. People wanted the styling of the G. MB decided to keep the G and sell it along side of the GL. but the GL was supposed to replace the G. Honestly you can't get a car built like this today.
