    i couldn't quite tell how many instructions of 'leading' that the co-driver uses? that part is just as interesting as the driving...where do the course notes come from? there seems an incredible amount of detail, and speed/gear indications...many the year since i was last in the rally circlles! ( we worked on electrical, instruments, lighting, and installing hundreds of kometta racing studs for winter rallys...)

      We make all our own pace notes in just 2 passes of recce in a road car before the test day or rally begins. Before the actual rally we'll watch video from our recce as well to go over the notes at least one to two more times.

      -large numbers (like 90, 40, 200, etc.): distance in meters or yards to next direction,
      smaller numbers with direction: the tightness of a corner, a 9 left is going to be a smoother higher speed corner whereas a 2 left will be a very tight low speed one.
      -tightens: although a corner starts at a higher speed/lower tightness, it finishes at a lower one.
      -narrows: the road becomes a lot more narrow at the finish of a corner.
      -don't: don't cut as in stay more towards the middle of a turn, this is useful if there is an imperfection, ditch, or obstacle at the inside of a corner.
      -crest: means that there is a small ramp-like incline in the road that obstructs visibility which necessitates dumping a little bit of speed so as not to jump it; similarly jump, small jump or big jump indicates that there is a similar feature in the road but that jumping it is more optimal for speed.
      -keep left/right/middle: self explanatory but used to indicate which part of the road to stay on for optimal turn in on the next corner or for avoiding obstacles in the road, usually useful when cresting or jumping
      -in/out: similar to the previous, usually used in turns to indicate the most usable part of the road and/or which part of the course will set you up best for the next corner
      there's probably some i forgot and quite a lot of minor stuff that i didn't mention, but this is pretty much all you need to know listening to a rally co-driver to understand what he's trying to communicate to his driver.

      having done a lot of rally sim stuff on PC and in VR, hearing it and processing it isn't as hard as you'd think. you kinda just learn it pretty quick. what boggles my mind is how the co-driver manages to keep the pacing and timing correct as they are reading them out. It's fine to hear it when it keeps coming at a consistent pace and is correctly timed to your preference of how far in advance of the turn you want to hear it... but how the codriver manages to read the notes AND keep track of where they are on the stage at the same time and not fuck up and mis-speak while being thrown all over the palce is beyond me.

    Listening to engine notes while glancing to the dashboard to change gear, listening to the pace notes, aiming for the curves & straights ahead, knowing which gears used for what kind of curve, executing it as quickly as possible, there's.. just a lot to do. Rally drivers are truly on another level among other racers.

    • @autoairsoft9269
      @autoairsoft9269 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Their eyes are fixed quite far ahead they dont look at the dashboard. Some older rally cars don't even have it connected or only connect the revs. It feels different when you look at it but when you drive so fast you are reacting on a delay so you have to decide to turn half a second before your hands actually turn the wheel.
      You make decisions about what you are going to do a few seconds in advance so you really need to look as far ahead as you can and have absolute trust in the co-driver when you tells you how to turn into the blind corners or crests

Wondering why the english pace notes are not "catching up" or copying the french system? Still a rare shot but one of the best. I would suggest recording in 24-30fps though - it will be even more dynamic footage and the speed even more apparent 🙂

    My YT got me used to watch POVs from simulators, like Asseto Corsa or BeamNG. For the first minute I was wondering: damn, it must be quite impressive mod, they photoscanned some road for sure to get such details and shading.
