How To Understand Your Co-Driver in Rally Games (Pacenotes Guide)

  • If you heard "5 Left into 4 right don't cut, 30 into square left, caution, over crest keep middle", is this total gibberish, or crucial information?
    Screaming through a forest at the fastest speed possible requires split second decision-making and a whole lot of bravery, where one wrong move can send the car into an aggressive tree hug.
    Teamwork is vital in rallying to prevent these accidents from happening. The co-drivers job is to feed information about the upcoming corners to the driver, which is condensed to minimal instructions and translated into an expected picture of the next turn.
    Jumping into a rally game, such as WRC10 or DiRT Rally 2.0, can be daunting for new players, but John Munro helps guide you through every instruction the Co-Driver throws out. Let us know in the comments below whether you have learnt anything new in this video, or if you knew it all beforehand.

    As the man who made the stages and wrote the pacenotes for the WRC Games since WRC 9, I am so happy to see this part of my work put in evidence somehow ! The most difficult part of making pacenotes for video games is the timing. Because unlike real life, the AI telling notes will have trouble to adapt on what's happening in-game. I obviously take most of the time adjusting the timing for pacenotes for it to appear/disappear, as I get some external help from real rallye driver for the writing. I can't count the number of times people asks me how this works thinking numbers are the gears so thanks for getting this part of rallying under the spotlight !

    • @TraxionGG
      @TraxionGG  2 ปีที่แล้ว +134

      I can image that's very tricky to get right, and It's probably why I often recommend that players set their calls to arrive a little earlier. It's less risky hearing a note too early than too late. Thanks very much for the comment and for all of your work, the notes are fantastic so you have done a brilliant job! I'd love to know your process for refining these 😄

      @@TraxionGG The difficulty is to set the "medium" value so everyone can change its settings. Thank you ! I can't talk too much about the creation process because it must stay confidential, but I can still talk a bit about it without going into big details (like I did with the pacenotes)

    • @le_zer

      @@Immortal.. it’s way harder than you think. Because every player will not take the corner at the same speed and will maybe crash (so the note would play without the player takin it in time). So I have to take in count if the corner is hard to take, what average speed the player will have and play test every single note until I have something great.

    Thanks so much for this video! I'm 64. My son introduced me to Dirty Rally a few years ago. When he moved out last year, he gifted me with a PS4 and a full VR rig including wheel, shifter, and peddles. I love playing Dirt Rally! Besides being just good, clean, non-violent gaming fun, it's a good stress reliever. Being I have a minor handicap of audio-video sensory processing delay, I have relied on the visual aids in the game more than the audio because I do not quite understand the audio. This helps a great deal with both the video displays and audio input!! Looking forward to improving my rank! I'll get a chance to play again with my son later this month. Hopefully I'll be able to surprise him with some improvements. Thanks again!

    I picked up on quite a few of these when an old roommate and I would do time attack against each other on Colin McRae Rally 3. The way I learned the notes was 6 is flat out, 5 is lift throttle, 4 is lift and brake, 3 is when you get in the 90° range so lift and heavier brake, 2 is less than 90° so heavy brake, 1 you should basically treat like a hairpin. Thank you for the breakdown, it helps round out some of the words I never quite picked up in real time with only audio.

    Helpful tips when taking Jumps.
    ALWAYS remember, Once your tires are not on the Ground, DO NOT Turn.
    Why? You not only can but WILL throw the car into a whole new direction you are not ready for and you will probably also be meeting, trees. Also when airborne braking can and WILL change your momentum. Physics is crazy. Also this means your wheels, are not spinning as fast when you land, which, the rest of your car, will not approve of. And that's not something you want.
    Cut/Don't Cut. Sometimes you will hear "Cut" or "Don't Cut"
    Don't cut means "DO NOT Cut this Corner Short." You may think "Well, I can." I tried this, and met a stump. You may also meet a rock on that inside of the corner.
    Cut means you can cut the corner short. Taking a much tighter line then you may expect. Cut/Don't Cut Usually applies to Tight Turns.
    Fun Fact:
    Forza Horizon 1 has a Rally DLC (It's Delisted) and it's Pace Notes, are not great. But hey. It's there, unlike Gran Turismo.

      I don't know how much this works for cars, but with off road racing trucks or buggies, breaking in the air causes the truck to take a more nose down attitude and accelerating lifts the nose. The flatter your vehicle lands the less damage to vehicle and crew. Landing on your front wheels bends the chassis, tears the suspension loose or bursts tires. Its hard to drive hard with your co-drive mostly screams over bumps and jumps and worse when its the driver.

    While I think these rally tutorial videos are helpful, I also think the little nuances of Rally are much better learned through driving experience and learning the hard way.
    It's kind of magical looking at these videos if you learned by yourself seeing how without teaching you most likely adapted to the same majorly used techniques by most drivers
    Whats so special about rally is how ingeniously simple it is on the surface. Everybody uses the same techniques (depending on the car/drivetrain) and yet it comes down to the driver's experience to perform them which sets people apart

    • @TraxionGG
      @TraxionGG  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Im with you on that, 100%!
      I was a bit like that myself, have been playing rally games for long enough now that when it came to writing this script, it didn’t really require any research. I had to check to make sure I was on the right path with certain things just in case, but generally it I’ve picked things up through hours and hours of playing myself.
      Might be trickier for some than others though. Some may have a language barrier that makes it less natural, some might just want clarification over specific instructions, whilst others may never have the time to learn the notes themselves and just want a less frustrating experience from the get go.
      Thanks for checking out the content, and best of luck with your rallying!😊

    DiRT Rally 1 has another warning.
    "deceptive"
    Meaning that you might see it differently from what was called, and go with your eyes, not what was called. I didn't listen to my co-drive a couple of times, got thrown out of the turn. And it's not that I DECIDED to take on my own, I thought it was safer with my instincts. When you hear "deceptive" - BRAKE. Do NOT try to go as you wanted to. Replay the stage again, or better yet, fin all the stages that have deceptive, don't memorise them and learn to listen and ACT on DECEPTIVE warning.
