Could the Ukrainian economy survive an invasion by Russia? Even in the worst-case scenarios, there would be areas in Ukraine that would not be at war: mainly in the West of the country. What life awaits those living in those regions?
There is a precedent that can shed a lot of light on this issue: Georgia (the country, not the US state). Georgia, with its capital in Tbilisi, is one of the brightest examples of how libertarian reforms have helped to lift a country that seemed to be stuck in the 19th century out of poverty. Indeed, we could say that Georgia was Putin's first victim. However, they have managed to maintain enviable economic growth rates.
What is so special about Georgia? What can Ukrainians learn from Georgians? In this video we tell you.

As a Georgian I agree with most, but I will add one small correction:
Russia had been giving out Russian passports to people in Abkhazia and Samachablo (the correct name for South ossetia) left and right in the years before the war.

A Letter from a long time viwer and a contributor.
You guys always produce top-notch videos, honestly, I would say some of the best political content out there.
I'm not going to discuss everything in detail there are some inaccuracies and some things which you got surprisingly accurately.
A while ago when visual politik had just one host (Simon) you guys made a video about Saakashvili and mentioned that, part 2 of the video would follow.
In part 2 you would dive into his darker side, sadly the second part never came to life so I feel like there are things that should be said about this man and his government.
Saakashvili is the most polarizing person in the country, yes he was a pro-western champion of liberal democracy but he has blood on his hands, to say the least.
He suppressed opposition in my country, businessmen were in constant terror to invest as he wished and do as his government pleased.
stealing businesses from their owners in the middle of the night with the help of police was common. Some might wonder how one steals a business, well like this - police would come and tell you to sign over your business or else you and your family would go to prison, real simple. (I personally know people who suffered through this and are still fighting to get back what is rightfully theirs)
There are numerous cases of people refusing and going to prison, some legit businessmen who by the way have won cases in the Hague against Saakashvili's government.
in 2012 when the Georgian Dream came to power the main driving force behind them was not money (Which obviously was a big factor) but the fact that Saakshvilis government was authoritarian in every sense of the word and people had enough.
During the election period a scandal hit the news that's Saakashvili government was raping people with brooms in prisons, yes you read that correctly with brooms!
There were numerous videos of this, that was the boiling point for the Georgian people and they overwhelmingly united against saakashvili and his corrupt government. (Through a democartic election which is very important)
This is also very important - Georgian Dream did not revoke his citizenship he renounced it, went to Ukraine to be the governor of Odesa and was ousted from that role with allegations of bribery and corruption.
The reason why he is on trial is rather simple, he wasted millions in taxpayer money on things like massages and shopping in Milan, that's good enough of a reason for me personally.
Not to mention the public demonstrations which were dispersed using violent means and where people died from excessive use of force in 2007 and 2011 (google Tbilisi November 7th 2007).
Their government sold Georgian cultural heritage sites and so so many more.
I cannot condense the last 30 years of my countries history into a simple comment.
I do agree when you say Georgia is one of the most interesting countries in the world. It is also a testing ground for Russian hybrid and traditional warfare. Everything that is happening in Ukraine, and even in the west has already happened in Georgia (fake news epidemic, war, radical polarisation, Cyberwarfare, etc.)
Georgia deserves an in-depth video on your channel and one that is not centered around this maniacal/delusional figure, rather around the history and culture of our country, about the numerous shortcomings and undeniable sucsesses of our economy and politics.
I would love to see you analyze Georgia because honestly, I have yet to see a proper analysis of my country that is true, in-depth and unbias.
    P.S
People in the EU and US were always attracted to Saakashvili's charisma and rock star-like personality, but for god's sake, in this day and age we should look beyond one's charm and flamboyant personality.
Saakashvili is not a movie star nor a rockstar.
he was elected a president did a decent job, at first and later went mad with power and was ousted by the people, not a pro-Russian party (This is also very important).
Now he is desperately trying to become the centerpiece of Georgian politics once more, but this time he is simply irrelevant and the people have learned their lesson.
It is extremely dangerous to romanticize figures like him, our society and society in general should have learned their lesson on this matter by now.

What you're seeing them doing wrong by Georgia, they've done wrong in all their other videos on other topics as well.

    • @IreneWY
      @IreneWY 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, his later years were crazy. I agree. But can you really say that Georgian dream is not authoritarian? At least under Saakashvili there was no obvious in you face rigging of elections. His government was the first to step down peacefully in the history of Georgia and that means a lot.
I don't want Micha back, but I definitely want Ivanishvili, gharibashvili, Kobakhidze and all the other cronies gone. Neither of them is good for Georgia today. We need new leadership that can take the best of those two governments and keep us on a pro-western course.

    • @temukamosulishvili7591
      @temukamosulishvili7591 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IreneWY
I'm not going to discuss who is better, who Georgians should elect, or whether elections are being rigged obviously or less obviously. As citizens of Georgia, we all have positions on most political, economical and social issues facing our country and there are healthier ways of discussing these issues than in a youtube comment section.
The point of my comment was different.
A lot of foreigners think of Saakashvili as a champion of liberal democracy, movie star, hero, the best and most important thing to happen to our country in the last 30 years.
This is undoubtedly the result of the one-sided media coverage that Saakashvili and his time in the government receive in foreign media.
Quite frankly this is a slap in the face for the people of our country, our culture, our history, and most importantly every single person oppressed by his truly authoritarian regime.
Saakashvili is not what he is made out to be, and I tried to inform some people of this.
I posted the same comment on their patron page and I hope they will consider it.
lastly and I might be wrong about this but, if we were living in a truly authoritarian state we would know, and there would be no place for speculation.

    • @Sandeepmukk
      @Sandeepmukk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@temukamosulishvili7591 Appreciate you comment and you're absolutely correct that in the west (US, at least), Saakashvili's trotted "as a champion of liberal democracy, movie star, hero, the best and most important thing to happen to our country [Georgia] in the last 30 years." However, I would also add that this channel has an overt Libertarian ideological bias, hence their narrative blindspots, similar to right-wing populists & Putin or left-wing & Castro et al.

    Thanks for this video!
I would add that Both Abkhazia and Tskhinvali Region saw an ethnic cleansing of Georgian population. Approx. 250,000 people were effected.
Also, in 2008 there was an underwhelming international response towards the war. The French negotiated a ceasefire agreement, for the sake of stopping war, with no regard about Georgia’s interests.
2008 war was followed after the recognition of Kosovo by the west and the NATO Bucharest Summit decision that Georgia and Ukraine would become members of the alliance.

I really disagree with you. By the way, there was conflict with Georgia and Abkhazia after independent (for immature politics) but main reason was Russia propaganda for that wanting unrest in Georgia.
We didn't start ethnic leansing, we defended our territory from Russia aggression. In those conflict the main culprit is Russia.
And Georgia always is ready for negotiation but Russia don't want that.

Not being able to integrate there two regions and ultimately resorting to an armed intervention in an area not directly under Georgian sovereign control can be translated as an invasion . Hence , invasion .
I see nothing wrong with a region trying to breakaway as they no longer want to remain in the country. Look at UK and Ireland . They fought for a bit , they lost and now they are separated. Self determination is in the core of UN values . Not to mention USA keeping on using it as a reason to invade .

You can see before and after pictures of Georgian villages in the area, all the houses are completely ruined, in some cases you could never guess there was a village and people lived there until recently. Russia has conquered many neighboring countries since the 17th century. at that time it was called the Russian Empire and on the world map, it looked like one country. In the 20th century in Russia, there was the communist revolution. Some countries from Russian Empire (like Georgia) were already independent and Russia conquered these countries again. And from that came USSR. USSR was a political and economic union of 15 countries. But on the world map, it again looked like one country. so people don't understand why we(georgiens) say that we are not Russians. Political systems in both countries are at least in theory similar, as are population size, GDP/capita, gini coef, even their exports breakdown is fairly similar (Armenia does export way more gold though).
They are however different in geopolitical aims, Georgia has mostly a problem with Russia, which is essentially an rival that is driving ethnic separatist conflict inside the country and in consequence is looking west a lot more towards the EU and NATO, while Armenia is increasingly reliant on Russia for support in their rivalry with Azerbaijan, given the latter's support by Turkey and the extra wealth Azerbaijan has due to their richness in hydrocarbons.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine can get trade insurance at this point, so the answer is no. Unless someone like the EU finds a way to fix this missing piece of foreign trade. Perhaps some sort of guarantee or loss fund. There is enough suffering going on without cutting off imports of necessities or collapsing the economy.

There could be a kind of Euro Marshall plan. Poland has been bit of a EU wildcard recently, but they have close ties to Ukraine so that leads to aid to Ukraine becoming a kind of bargaining chip with in Europe. Baltics, Checkia, slovakia and even Hungary have also been on the wrong side of russian imperialism so they are also likely to want to help a war devastated Ukraine.

Possible. I recall that some time after the brotherly welcome in Ukraine, he had a fall-out with Poroshenko (was probably starting to take too much place on the local politial stage). His Ukrainian citizenship was cancelled, and as he had prior renounced his Georgian, he ended up apatrid. IIRC he is currently jailed in Georgia as an illegal immigrant (unsure if Zelensky reinstated his Ukrainian citizenship or not).

I don't think already European countries and NATO members (such as Romania or Poland) will have the same destiny, but probably they will be a bit more unstable in the future. Probably Balkans will be strongly affected too
