      I am afraid you are right. And money always influences politics. I believe the UK (Boris Johnson) even "invited" the son of a former KGB agent - now rich oligarch - into the house of lords. That same BoJo is now stating... what exactly ? He has said and claimed many things in the past that never materialised.
      By the way, Malta is doing the same. It embarrasses me that the worst kind of rich people can buy EU citizenship through Malta.

    Most millionaires came from fairly well to do parents who might not have handed down the wealth but gave their kids a good head start. Also a lot of those millionaires are people with homes in high cost of living areas who are at retirement age and have enough money to retire on. It's not like there are 30 million 30 something self-made millionaires who came from impoverished backgrounds and have a million dollars in liquid assets above and beyond the value of the home that they live in... It is still extremely hard to move up the socioeconomic ladder.

    I guess we in Hungary are the 'ordered from Wish' version of this. We sell EU citizenship for all kinds of low-tier criminals of the east.
    "The Hungarian Residency Bond" program offers non-EU nationals, fast-track permanent long term residence status in Hungary, who buy 300,000 euro worth of Hungarian government treasury bonds with 5 year lockout period. After 5 years the full money is given back, without revoking PR status. No requirement to live in Hungary. Family and children also get immediate permanent residence status.

They are not self made. They were lucky to get an asset that shouldn't be worth a million dollars. Just BS nonsense from this channel.

    LOL. the UK is smashing the very rule of law, legal stability, and respect for personal property that it has boasted to
    pieces. If the Golden Visa program is going wrong, you can adjust or even cancel the program going forward, but you can't break what you have already promised and revoke the rights already bestowed to the applicants. No matter how the oligarchs got their fortune, it happened outside the UK and is not what the UK should care about. The UK is just legalizing appropriation of personal property from a political moral high ground. If you use the legitimacy of the fortune as an excuse, then think about how the UK got it's power and fortune as a global power. It was through centuries of invasion, conquest, colonization, and oppression. None of the UK's economic and political power should be deemed legitimate.

    • @falconne
      @falconne 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sanctions have nothing to do with criminal activity or how the fortune was acquired (that's a law enforcement matter). Sanctions are handled by the foreign policy office and is a soft power weapon. Anything can be frozen by sanctions (unlike in the case of criminal activity, where the asset must be connected to a crime). It's part of the law of every country in the world that the property of wealthy individuals closely connected to a foreign government can be sanctioned if the two countries have a foreign policy dispute. Attracting foreign money this way is a goal of the foreign office, precisely because of the leverage sanctions give them with foreign policy, being able to influence the "key holders" to put pressure on a foreign government. Russia and China also do this, but they are much less attractive places for wealthy foreigners to keep their wealth.
      The oligarchs aren't stupid. They fully knew the risk of sanctions when they put their money in Western property. They just decided that in the long run their property is still safer in Western hands than in Russia, because Putin is more likely to seize it if there was a falling out between them and Putin.
