The war in Ukraine has made us accustomed to hearing news about sanctions and blockades of financial assets, yachts, airplanes, real estate, and endless wealth of all kinds in the hands of Russian oligarchs.
Now, what exactly do we mean by an oligarch? Are they the real masters of Russia? The shadow rulers? How far does their power extend? Who really has the economic power in Vladimir Putin's country? In this video we tell you.

A strongman can survive in power so long as he appears strong. Putin could have survived sanctions so long as he won the war. If he loses the war, and is seen to lose the war, he just becomes Nikita Khrushchev version 2.0. But, for anyone who thinks his replacement will be any better, just ask someone old enough to have stared across the Fulda gap at Leonid Brezhnev's tanks.

In France, it's a lot clearer, we have state enterprises, national champions like Total, Bouygues and Renault which act as private arms of the state. The cosy relationship allows both to work together for geopolitical and geoeconomic pursuits. How does it compare to China, the SOEs, Red Princes and ties between the CCP and private sector? How does this system compare to the Zaibatsu system in Japan and the Chaebols in South Korea?
In the West, this is clearly the case, like the ties between the Ivy League elites to US corporations and government, the influence of banks like Goldman Sachs over the federal government, the influence of the arms industry over the Pentagon, etc.

interesting to get a better understanding of what Oligarchs are, and how "business" works. A shame that the Russian people don't seem to benefit from the country's resources. A long way off from any of the ideas that led to the communist revolution.
It's hard to see how that structure can change.
The invasion of Ukraine may not be going smoothly for Putin, however will the Oligarchs be affected significantly, or care that much, if they have their wealth in Russia.

Hopefully Russia will be split into smaller countries, its a real possibility ;)) Russia cannot build anything by its own anymore, tanks, planes, cars, not even rail-roads because they cannot import the parts.Except for agriculture and gas/oil they don't have anything. Its estimated that the local governors will not send their incomes back to Moscow because the population will not have enough jobs so they cannot feed them if they do..some estimate that the goverment will fall in automn, some say that it won't because China and India might save them. The russian people will flee Russia until it closes its borders. And about the war, Putin cannot win unless he uses chemical weapons or tactical nukes..but even if he does, we don't know how the west will respond- he might not even win the war if he uses them. Best scenario for us is if Zelenskyi signs a peace treaty even if that means giving away Crimea and Donbas. If the war escalades Nato might get involved and thats bad for us because of nukes.

@@miroslavhoudek7085 Because every war ends with a peace-treaty (except for the korean war which ended in a cease-fire and not a peace-treaty, but that was 70y ago). You are right, many belive that if Putin is satisfied with what he gets from the Ukraine war he will then attack the Baltic countries. In his mind he is at war with Nato and Ukraine, not only Ukraine. I personally think that sooner or later a war between Nato and Russia is inevitable. Putin's popularity among the russians has actually grown to 62% since the war started, he was at 49% before the war. The russian system will sooner or later born another dictator like Putin, it is designed that way.Hopefully Nato will intercept at least some of the russian nuclear missiles. The short and middle range missiles can be intercepted with the Aegis system, Patriots and Thaad's in coordination with radars such as the 1 in Ramstein. The problem are the ICBMs which travel too fast and are unlikely to be stopped by GBIs or other systems at the moment.

I imagine they will be pretty bad. Putin has failed in diversifying the economy of Russia. As soon as Europe has new pipelines and sources for oil and gas, the Russian economy will buckle. Russia has become a really toxic locale for any kind of foreign investment as well.
The real question is will Russia go back to being a centrally planned economy like the USSR was. Because I can't imagine Russia being eager to cut military spending, nor does it want instability due to a poor economy that's tied to a free market.

Nobody gave a hack about hate speech toward Ukrainians in Russia, about Ukrainophobia. It was in popular Russian movies, on TV, in Russian kitchens, and on social networks. Eventually, Russian society dehumanized Ukrainians and made those horrors of war possible. And no, Putin didn't wake up on the 24 of February and decided to unleash war, it started 8 years ago. • @Thesamurai1999
      @Thesamurai1999 2 ปีที่แล้ว

In russia they have far more political power than a company does in the US. They can easily work their way around many laws which in the US is slightly harder because of democracy and the fact that politicians here are outing and exposing each other far more. Democrats will expose republicans and republicans will expose democrats. While in Russia, they work together to hide their tracks. If the US was only controlled by either democrats or republicans then it’d be a far more similar situation to russia.

The application of oligarch to these rich people is indirectly referencing Lenin's use of the term commanding heights. Commanding heights refers to the state owned or linked enterprises which held power over 70-80% of the Russian GDP and a large percentage of the jobs.
Thus its not just about wealth but also about overwhelming power over the economic production of a country.

"Oligarch: A member of a small governing faction."
Trump is/was an oligarch. So is Joe Biden. Both belong to families that represent the elite in the USA with a lot of political power.
    ...
The question is if the USA is an oligarchy. Wikipedia's definition:
"Oligarchy is a form of power structure in which power rests with a small number of people. These people may or may not be distinguished by one or several characteristics, such as nobility, fame, wealth, education, or corporate, religious, political, or military control."
Maybe ask who are the people who select the candidates Americans are allowed to vote for, and how much money matters when it comes to influencing voters. I think the answer lies in that.
