    This is the best Dogumentary I've seen as far as Neapolitan Mastiffs. His description is spot on, rules, socialization and enjoy this wonderful breed. He nails it, totally. I had a Blue Neo he was wonderful. I miss my friend Baloo.

    I had a neo back in 1986. His mother and Father were Italian imports. His Name was NERO. He did well in the show ring. He was even in Dog World magazine back then. I miss him dearly. This documentary is RIGHT ON about Neos. He was highly intelligent and emotional. He was an incredible guard dog with a commanding bark and ferocious growl at times. He would do anything to protect me and all I had to do was to let him know that this person was OK and he would be nice and play with anyone who was a friend. NERO was a great companion and I will always love and miss him very much.

    Great job Marcus...awesome breed...I owned 3 and was very active in breed for a lot of years but please be advised...they look cool and they make the cutest puppies but this breed IS NOT for everyone and definitely not for 1st time dog owners. To many of them end up in Neo rescue because that cute little puppy that you fell in love with turns into a giant 150 plus behemoth of a dog that is just to much dog to handle. If you are a neat person and don't like slobber on your furniture and clothes..keep on looking..not the breed for you. They can also get pretty stinky if you do not keep up with their bathing. Yes, that goes for a lot of dogs but Neos take it to a whole different level...trust me on this. Trust me...I'm not throwin' shade on the breed...I love them...they can be an awesome pet but you have to seek out the full skinny on this breed before making a purchase and because I do love the breed, I try to keep it 100. Also....there are pretty significant health issues in the breed so make sure you research TOP NOTCH BREEDERS...I learned the hard way...I was naive and bought my 1st Neo from a glorified pet store. Awesome temperament in her...not much type and on the smaller side but I spent $1000's on keeping her healthy. Lots of back yard breeding done on these dogs..you've been warned. Socialization is PARAMOUNT for this breed...especially intact males...take them everywhere with you when they are pups and have been fully vaccinated and vet checked. Different sights, sounds, smells, people...exposure 101. lol The more they see the better dog you'll have. Trust me, you'll never be able to over socialize this breed...they are estate guard dogs..it's knee deep in their blood. If every they need to step up...trust me...they will. One of my boys used to patrol the perimeter of my yard a few times a day. He was never interested in anything that happen beyond the perimeter line but if you crossed over onto the property without an introduction...that was yo ass. lol Like I said...this is a formidable breed. In the right hands its an awesome breed but if your clueless on large breed guard dogs...they can be your nightmare and worst someone else's nightmare which then becomes your nightmare. Enjoy. Sorry so long but there is lots to say regarding this breed....mostly good...for the right person/family.

      You described my old boy exactly. He wouldn't ever leave his 1.5 acre area without me but patrolled it all and he didn't play games if you came in his yard uninvited. One time the neighbor accused my dog of pooping in his yard and i know it wasnt him because of the road between our houses my dog wouldn't cross. i said im sorry picked it up n left and as i did the neighbor followed me and said he would shoot the dog if he found it on his land. I had some things to say after that all the while neighbor is following me to my yard. The second i came onto my property my neo was next to me leaning on my leg and had a low rumble of a growl i will never forget. The neighbor stopped dead in his tracks and started to play nice and walk back to his yard. If I would have given the dog encouragement he would have tore that fucker up but then my dog n myself would be in trouble. Neighbor later dropped a note in my mailbox apologizing. Hold your big gentle protectors tight. I sure do miss mine

    This dog is disgustingly smart. It is literally like having a sassy two year old. You say "no!" and she talks back. She lets out little howls and barks. She will only do something I command if there is something for her to gain. She loves other dogs and little dogs she will lay down to be on their level.

    I rescued my Neo when she was 4yo, no-one can come onto my property or in the house, she is the most aggressive but also the most loveable, clownish dog I have ever had.I leave her with my elderly Mum when I go to work or go out with friends and she's fine with her, but Mum has no fear of her and the dog respects that, my other family members however have shown fear so the dog senses that and they ring ahead so I can lock her away. She is not as heavily fleshy as most that have seen at shows are, she is very laid back unless she's on guard, she will eat anything left around where she can get it, slobbers everywhere, I have cleaned slobber off the ceiling, she has a great nose, is very intuitive and picks up new commands very quickly. Personally I don't recommend this breed to novice handlers, but I definitely recommend them as a breed, I only hope their health issues, which are no more than any other giant or large breed, are focussed on and eradicated soon.

    i own a neo and everything you say is true - pros and cons. our dog is 5 years old, intelligent, super affectionate, highly protective - but you have to show'em whose boss very early (as puppies) because of their strength, you will need to be the one in control. I always feel safe with my neo by my side.

    I feel in love with the breed when my mom's then bf invited us to stay with him at his friend's house (when I was a kid) while he helped his friend build a shed. The friend had an adult female. She was suspicious of me for the first 2 days, then she was fine. She was completely cool after and almost immediately warmed up to me. She even followed me around the whole time I was there. Female Neos are very into kids, they like kids once they know they are ok to be there. I was fascinated by this dog that looked like a gargoyle. :)

    I've got two English Mastiffs and a Neapolitan Mastiff. They are just very lovable dogs they'll come and lay down on your lap while your sitting on the coach. They're very clumsy dogs but I've got a two year old sister and a 5 yr old brother and our dogs are very gentle with them. And how clumsy they are they've never stepped on the kids no matter when they're running around the house or jumping off the couch. I would definitely recommend getting these dogs. They are strong dogs but don't seem to go after dogs but they do get excited. These dogs absolutely slobber a lot it'll get over the walls so wash off the walls every now and then lol but my oldest English mastiff is 11 and my cat and him absolutely love each other. The younger dogs like my 2 yr old English mastiff and my 3 yr old Napoleon are still maturing and tend to scare the cat lol

She was a true gentle giant. I'd give her a little walk arouna small fiekd and she'd follow me everywhere. I do hope she got the wonderful home she so deserved. Her name was Floppy. QUESTION: Any problem with a 3 y.o. female cattle dog coexisting with a female neo puppy to be raised with the cattle dog?
    FACTS: I have a nearly 3 y.o. female blue heeler. I have 2 acres fenced with a cattle fence and gates. My cattle dog, who sleeps in my bedroom, is outside before dawn and after sunset so I worry about coyotes. I'm thinking about getting a neo to keep her company and as coyote protection. My wife's male Malinois recently died of old age. She lives 65 miles away and we visit each other on weekends. Because she's going to get another male Malinois, I thought I'd get a female Neopolitan. Hence, my question whether a 3 y.o. female cattle dog will get along with a female neo puppy that will be raised with the cattle dog?

    Great interview, but I'll tell you this Zeke if this guy says he's been breeding Neos for as long as he has then he is part of the problem this breed is having issues. Before the AKC started getting involved with the breed in 1970, you didn't see these overly exaggerated features. They need to breed these dogs with less wrinkles and better bone structure. The vet bills that come with these dogs is horrible. The working line neos are so agile and can move.

      AJ The dogman Can you point me towards examples of working Neos? Or breeders of them if any still breed them?

    • @AJ-kb1kf
      @AJ-kb1kf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Аполон the most I've found is a few and I had to google working line neopolitan mastiffs. They were pretty much built like Cane Corsos with a lot of wrinkles in the face. This is why it is always important to do proper research before buying any breed. and i love the neos but this is what will happen to the american bully if they keep going the way they are.

      AJ The dogman Do you know of any people that breed that line of Neo anymore?

      Their are Neos with less wrinkles. Not these dogs in the film, unfortunately, but they do exist. An not just the females.

    You forgot to mention 2 key things, 1. Because they are giant breed dogs, they can't have heavy exercise until they are 2 yrs old due to their frames still growing. They will have structural/ bone issues. 2. They, due to being a large dog, they can get bloat, which is contorted/twisted stomach. DON'T feed them a big meal then exercise them, that's what causes it! Any dog with a barrel stomach can get it. Even dogs as "small" as a Boxer. It can be fatal. Especially if the dog had bloat previously. Only can be fixed via emergency surgery. Also, due to them being large, they can have something called Hip Dysplasia, where the ball of the joint (hips) don't fit into the socket. That, too, can also only be cured via surgery. Ok, now were done with the major issues, now the minor, only one really, something any dog with wrinkles on their heads can get this, Entropin. or curling in of eye lashes. That, too, is surgically corrected. Rotties can get that, too. BTW. Also, because of their having wrinkles, they can get skin infections, you will have to clean the wrinkles and folds every day. Much like a Bulldog/Shar-Pei. Plus, they can't take heat very well, not a dog to exercise in 65+F degree weather. Think that's about it.. I love Neos, one of my fav giant breed dogs. If you take care of their health, you will have a great dog for about 10-11 yes, there abouts.

    I would love to own a Neo but the medical costs can be high. They often need an eye surgery and other health issues can abound with that breed. Still, they are awesome guard dogs and they look so beastly.
