- We all know Star Wars, but have you ever heard of the Stars War? That subtle spelling difference allowed companies like Turkey's Uzay to make bootleg toys that latched onto the popularity of Star Wars. Steve Sansweet of Rancho Obi-Wan shows off a few of his favorite bootlegs here.

Oh man! I had all those "uzay" branded figures when I was a kid. And also the board game! I wish I still had them :) Gret memories :)
ps: "uzay" means "space" in Turkish.

Blue Stars looked like it was a Cobra Commander figure.
A trick : you can watch movies at flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.

Hi i'm from Hungary! They made back then bootleg figures because the original Kenner star wars figures weren't availables in Hungary,and those figures that were available where usually very rare and expensive at the time,and bootlegs where more common and cheaper
He didn't mention Head Man. How do you talk about Uzay without bringing up Head Man?

Yes Because Steve didn't want to spent much money on those figures also refering to the hungarian figures . Steve bought them long before the sky wasn't the limit .
There was not much info about Headman in the early years , he had to be found first .

Steve is amazing and such a nice guy. Traveled to USA from Australia in 2013 and was blown away with Rancho Obi-Wan!
I know for sure thet he does not have the same Boba Fett action figure I have, with a removable helmet showing the face of George Lucas underneath.

Is he even a pop culture geek to begin with? The way he acts and talks makes him look like that one clueless friend who looks at your vintage toy collection and ask why you display them inside a glass cabinet.
tbh the guy wouldn't even point the boxes to the camera properly. In my opinion that's worse.
These were for sale (for us poor Turkish kids who couldn't afford or find the originals) when I was in elementary school (about 25 years ago), I remember "Darth Vader" was named "Dark Leader" :) And I think I owned an Imperial Gunner (no calculator included) ;p
Hungarian SW figures... Yessss!!! I have some at home. Unfortunately are unboxed. These was my favorite childhood games. I was able to read the box label: 02:22 "Csillagok Háborúja". Yeahhh. Thank you! Great memories.

I am loving this Star Wars series of vids. Some of those bootleg figures are great. I'd have loved to have got some of them as a kid to make up all the story behind them. The Blue Stars are totally Marine Troopers lol

i picked up a figure in the late 90s marked "evil star robot". it was a one piece badly sculpted Boba Fett about 7" tall and you could smell that petro-chemical smell but stronger. made in china. bare cardboard backing as well. wish i still had it
He has the largest Star Wars collection "in private hands". SO the government has a larger collection somewhere? In Fort Knox?

I think you have it absolutely spot-on. He seems a very nice guy, but I wonder if he's been trained as a reporter / journalist to actually ask questions that will generate interesting answers, or if he just wants to be nice and polite and accommodating to his interview subjects - which is totally fine too, I guess.

He owns a sweet museum that he bought everything for, that's pretty cool. He probably has a story for every piece in there, and we only saw 1/4 of his stuff, if that.

The reasons for the occasionally surreal shades of Polish Star Wars knockoffs from the 80s were twofold: firstly, sometimes there would not be enough, say, white rubber to pour into a mold, but that did not stop production: whatever rubber was available was the one used. Hence such memorable creations as pink Chewbacca or the scary, shiny, pitch-black Stormtroopers, who looked like Vader's illegitimate sons.
The second reason was that, amusingly, the figures were often hand-painted by local grannies, who supplemented their pensions that way. Some of them were given original figures or Star Wars photos for reference, some actually knew the films, but some did not, and instead, they relied on their imagination. That gave birth to blonde Leia, black-haired Luke, Han Solo with pink pants, a silver vest and red hair... and oodles of other Darth Picasso creations.
(Private businesses were allowed to operate in Poland during its socialist period - it was formally known as "private initiative", and merely required one to register with the government as a business, sift through several bureaucratic forms, and pay additional taxes. Several "private initiatives" made copies of Kenner's figures (and many, many other toys, from Muppets and Pink Panther to Batman and Superman), but the most productive one was located in Gdańsk. Where it once stood, there is now only an empty lot, overgrown with weeds and grass, but decades ago, a warehouse was standing there - and inside, they would pour melted rubber into metal forms day and night, making hundreds of figures daily, for years.)
Wow. Don't go in that collector's basement to look at some of his collection. He sounds creepy. Like chain you to the water pipe creepy.

Hungary was pretty damn good at bootleg Star Wars merchandise. At some point there were really ugly action figures carved out from soap bars, no joke.
If they don't get to the crawling baby dalmatian stormtrooper I'm gonna riot.

He seems incredibly even-keeled and genuinely interested in Star Wars as a cultural phenomenon. He doesn't seem to treat the objects are people or use them to fill an empty void in his life. He's like a scholar.
