    I UPLOADED THIS FOR MY DAD, I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE CAR. SORRY.
    Engine ZL1 427 all aluminum, pro top line head, comp cam, 1000 cfm holley, 5 speed tremec, 411 gear.
    TWO PULLS: 1st pull inconclusive. Tires spun on rollers. 2nd pull, tightened ties some more. Pull was better, but tires still spun (that's the blue smoke)
    I guess stock poly glass doesn't work with all this power. Will try again with slicks on.

    Tightening the straps will mostly keep it from moving forward, stick large boy in back seat, then do a pull, plus, water dripping from car onto dyno doesn't help, and don't post a dyno run without any results!

    this engine arguably is the most powerful engine from the muscle car era, 1964-1971 i know the 426 hemi, the 455 buick stage 1, The Corvette L88, which is very similar to the ZL1, The 1970 Chevelle 454 LS6, The 442 oldsmobile 455 W30, and the 1967 Corvette 427 tri power. with all of these cars i just mentioned the ZL1 in my opinion produces the most power. What do you guys think?

    First one was delivered to Fred Gibb Chevy in Illinois on a cold morning. These care were for racing and chokes were not installed. In fact they came with the wrong sized carb a 780cfm instead of the 850 Holley cfm. Apparently Holley had a shortage of 850s that year. The right carbs were sent later. With no choke and it very cold it almost did not start to pull off the trailer. Two ZL1 Vetts were built but I don't remember where they were sent.

    • @garywilson7992
      @garywilson7992 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would’ve been a Poor result for both of those engines, the l-88 should easily pull around 550 hp @ 6400 rpm, the Z L -1 a little more, the biggest difference, it was all aluminum.

    • @garywilson7992
      @garywilson7992 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I forgot to add that the L-88 & Z L-1 both peaked @ around 7000 rpm, so 550 @ 6400 is very conservative.

    • @hoghogwild
      @hoghogwild ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garywilson7992 The ZL-1 had a a bit more cam in it than the L-88 did. As part of the Zl-1 program, each ZL-1 engine was serialized, spent 1 hour of break in on an engine dyno, removed and taken to their "test Lab" where it was ran on a special test program where a serialized engine output sheet was generated. No ZL-1 made under 500 hp with the range being from 500hp to 535hp. Sustained rev redline was 7000rpm with the valvetrain allowing 7600rpm in a drag race situation. The 430hp was indeed the engine's output, though that power number occurred under 5000rpm, revving the beast over 6000rpm would deliver over 500hp.

    • @garywilson7992
      @garywilson7992 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hoghogwild I wasn’t referring to any of that, for what went on in the factory production test lab for each ZL1 built, which may have been the case. But the L-88 & ZL-1 I’m referring to, we’re not factory built crate delivered engines, they were built in a machine shop, the L-88 was built with special order parts, using an existing 427 4 bolt main block, the ZL-1 aluminum block and parts were all ordered. But since there are variables involved for how much horsepower an engine produces, and would also depend upon the degree of competent precision of the Machine shop and engine builder, as well as what main & rod bearings clearances were used, since engines built for racing competition aren’t generally needed to be broke in first, so to speak, unless it was left running on the dyno. The performance numbers I gave were based on both dyno tuned engines, and the L-88 cam was also used in the ZL-1. So I guess someone could say that they weren’t technically a factory built L-88 & ZL-1. But claiming that an L-88 developed only 430 hp, as I know it was, is a little disingenuous to say the least, when that rating was based on only around 5300 rpm, I’m not sure, but there was a reason for it.

      @@generalpatton8468 The 1969 run of ZL-1 engines at Tonawanda running on Sunoco 260 gas never had one under 500hp, all of them ran between 500-536hp. Minor headwork would allow upwards of 600hp. Longtube headers and open exhaust are considered mandatory to reach these numbers. As delivered with Camaro BBC manifolds, power was about 275hp. Do you know how to use a dyno? Was it your first time trying? You couldn’t get a reading both times? It’s rear tires were spinning on the rollers means you need more strap-down leverage applied over it’s rear axle. Judging by the looks of things, it was in the 600hp vicinity. Ford, Plymouth, Chrysler, Dodge, Pontiac. Buick, & Olds all had 400hp+ models on the street. Were you able to dyno any of them successfully? Your day shift job might not be working out for you.

      A 302 built to stock specs make ~335 with header 355ish just like the L76, the only difference was the stroke. Stroke has very little impact on HP alone what it does is increase the torque of an engine. Bore has the most influence on power. So the 4" bore motors will all peak about the same HP with all else being equal the only thing that will change is the rpm that peak happens at. Short stroke higher peak rpm, the DZ take 600 more revs to match the L76 and 1200 more than the LT1. The DZ made about 40lb-ft less than the L76 and about 50lb-ft less than the LT1. As far as street engines go the ranking would be LT1, L76 and then the DZ.

    So this is a newer style LS motor like what all the C5 vette's camaros, etc, are running around with? Obviously the biggest engine is the 427 in the C6 z06 vette's from the factory. Sorry, I'm not up to date on all the old school muscle engines if they made ls7s back in the day. Those are nice numbers btw thanks for posting them. I agree with the no replacement for displacement until you bring boost into the picture. I just recently dyno tuned my thunderbird sc old technology 3.8 v6 with stock restrictive , bad designed heads on a mustang dyno. I made around 445rwhp, and in the same neighborhood of torque. Mine has a very streetable comp custom ground cam with .588 lift 224 @ .050 duration, 112 lobe separation. I'm just happy with how dependable it is, been together in that similar format for 3 years and I just drive it. I can rip into it and really have fun or take it on a 1000mile trip, play on the dragstrip and drive it home all while getting 25mpg. Nice job on the car, sounds like a beast and on all fairness I knew it made a decent amount of power by how fast it ripped through the dyno. Just hope you are happy with it. A lot of people think they have 800horsepower cars until the dyno crushes their dreams.

    • @brgable
      @brgable 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      iliketowatchthis No if this were an original ZL-1 427 with all the original restrictive garbage on it they made around 500 flywheel hp. Now a really sharp tune and junk all that factory smog garbage this motor makes 560+ flywheel hp all day long! Those numbers in 69 were huge for that era just like the new Z06 today with 650hp. I'm an old school guy but I'd be an idiot if I didn't agree that the LS motors today stock smoke the old school stuff stock. I think it's safe to say the reason there aren't any big cubic inch motors anymore is that no matter what there's no way in hell you could get them to meet stupid ass gov't regulations for fuel mileage. I couldn't agree more that's when you introduce boost! It's crazy the power some people are getting out of these turbo'd cars. Just curious are you saying that your stock V6 thunderbird is making 445 rwhp...???

      In 1969 Chevrolet made an variant of the 427 L88 which had an all-aluminum block as well as all-aluminum heads. This variant, known as the ZL-1, was developed primarily for Can-Am racing.... However, 69 of these engines became the power plant of 69 COPO (Central Office Production Order) Camaro's in 1969. Like the L88, the ZL-1 had high-flow open chamber aluminum heads and ran a cam which was even more "hot" than the cam in the L88. Unlike the L88, on the other hand, the ZL-1 ran at 12:1 compression. In 1969 the factory's gross horsepower rating was 430 horsepower (I would assume at the wheels). While there isn't a standard calculable percentage for power lost through the drive train, the average power loss through the typical RWD driveline is about 20% from the flywheel/crank. While it's not that trustworthy, factoring in the average power loss through the drivetrain (20%) the ZL-1 would have been making around 516 bhp.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alan Schulte L88 was iron block aluminum heads. Gross HP is from an engine dyno without accessories and open headers, on a chassis dyno the wheel HP was less than 300 for the L88 and LS6. Hot Rod tested stock examples of both.

      The LS6 of that time (1969-1970s) was a 454 [453.96] c.i. big block V8. The L88 was a 427 c.i. big block V8. It [the L88] was practically the same engine as the L71 with the exception of aluminum heads.... The only advantage that the L88 had over the L71 was a weight savings of around 75 lbs.
      While the ZL-1 engine had physical specifications similar to those of the L88, it was cast entirely out of aluminum. This dropped the weight of a fully-optioned (or dressed) ZL-1 engine to roughly 575 lbs.
      Now I would like to see the sources that you got your information on the dyno numbers for the L88 aluminum-head 427, LS6 454, and ZL-1 all-aluminum 427.... Because I don't accept information that's supported by "It's true because I said it is."

      Read your original post you said the L88 was all aluminum. I think you just miss typed what you were thinking.
      It wasn't hot rod it was Super Chevy that did the dyno pull it's was also the L72 not the L88. The L88 would have done better but not dramatically so.
      This reply with have the info the next one with have the link, sometimes they get blocked.

      Not even close, they made about 355, just like the L76 and LT1. Which should really be no surprise to anyone as the only significant difference was the stroke, the LT1's cam was slightly milder. The peak torque changes just as you would expect while the peak power scales with revs.

    I think this should have worked out fine ......... all you need to fix was the driver. Big Frady cat! This is a 427 ...... born to run and CAN take a little abuse. You can baby it up to 4 gear ...... but all you needed to do was bring it up to 5800 RPM and hold it for 2 minutes. Watch the oil pressure and engine temp ... if things start to get a little squirrely ...... then shut it down to an idle and let everything settle down.I have a 327 300 HP high compression fuele head SBC and I love to run it on the dyno. Runs like a champ, sounds great, and really screams. I've run it up to 7200 RPM a couple of times ....... BUT only for a couple of seconds ..... floating valves are a little scary!

    No dyno numbers because he was probably angry, was told it would make 600 rwhp and didn't even come close. That's why most of these old muscle videos don't show numbers. Still ran well, I'll bet it is a low 400rwhp which is still very fast.

    • @brgable
      @brgable 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I will say this and am more than happy to show the numbers from my LS7 454 that is all factory other than a comp solid roller cam spec'd at .255 050 duration with .652 lift and a holley hp 750 made 503 at the wheels. That's with a stock hi-rise intake and stock steel heads with 2.25 intake valves and no porting. Thats around 620ish at the flywheel not bad for mostly stock 50 year old components. Compression is 12:1 yes impractical on pump gas, other than E85 pain in the ass, but I feel that if I go with 10:5 comp and AFR 300 oval cnc heads with a vic jr intake and 950 hp holley this motor will make much more power than it did in present form. However, there is no replacement for displacement and the 565 bug is eating away......

    • @BigThree4Ever
      @BigThree4Ever 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, first off in the video description it says that they're running polyglas tires on his particular video. Polyglas tires are bias-belted tires... bias-belted tires have less rolling resistance but do no perform as well as a radial. Second, you can hear in the video (and read in the description) that the tires spun on the rollers. While somewhat uncommon, it is notable that when this was being filmed the vehicle was wet - and therefore there is a higher chance that the tires were wet or that the rollers were wet and possibly contributed to the tires spinning. Also, in 1969 a COPO/ZL-1 Camaro was rated at 430 whp. Finally, as far as videos not showing numbers you can see from this video certain tires can cause inconclusive results.

    • @brgable1976
      @brgable1976 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Alan Schulte There's many videos from the Pure Stock drag races of ZL1 Camaro's and L88 Vette's running in the 11's all day long in bone stock form. Very few production cars today run those times with much better technology.
