Madhuvanti’s journey reflects an incredible devotion to her art, a true testament to her resilience and commitment to exploring new depths in Indian classical music. Beginning her study in khayal, which requires a deep understanding of improvisation, vocal nuances, and rhythm, she would have honed an extraordinary sensitivity to melody and timing-skills that are invaluable when playing complex instruments like the rudra veena. Her transition from the violin and bansuri (flute) to the rudra veena is particularly compelling. These initial instruments likely provided her with a strong foundation in melody and breath control, enriching her adaptability and emotional expression. However, the draw of the rudra veena-the mother of all stringed instruments in North Indian classical music-was something she could not resist. Known for its rich, resonant tones and ability to evoke a profoundly meditative atmosphere, the rudra veena stands as one of the oldest and most intricate instruments in the Indian classical tradition. Creating her own veena to suit her style is an impressive feat, not only in terms of craftsmanship but also for the personal vision and artistic conviction it represents. She had the guidance of Pt. Rajshekar Vyas, who must have encouraged her to think creatively and authentically, as adapting an instrument as rare as the rudra veena to one’s personal style is almost unheard of. This instrument has an ancient, austere presence and demands a particular depth of engagement, so Madhuvanti’s choice to customize her veena demonstrates both her dedication and her readiness to break away from convention. Through her study with renowned masters such as Pt. Bala Chander, the Gundecha Brothers, and Vidushi Mita Nag, she immersed herself in the rigorous discipline of dhrupad, the oldest surviving form of Indian classical music. Dhrupad focuses on the spiritual aspects of sound, and mastery requires years of intense practice, meditative immersion, and a deep philosophical understanding of music as a pathway to the divine. Each of her teachers would have imparted unique insights and techniques, from Pt. Bala Chander’s emphasis on musicality to the Gundecha Brothers' approach to rhythmic precision and Vidushi Mita Nag’s nuanced style. Today, as one of the leading dhrupad artists, Madhuvanti has not only preserved an ancient art form but has also added her unique voice to it, blending centuries-old tradition with her own innovative spirit. Her background in modeling and visual arts also likely enhances her stage presence and ability to communicate beyond sound, creating a multi-dimensional experience for her audience.

Attention pulled suddenly around 49-50:00 to the notes resembling the vocalization of a tiger - that strange, cow-like lowing sound; looked into Bhairava, his etymology & manifestations, to find descriptions of 'fierce', 'fearsome', and 'protecting from fear', and that he also may be found wearing a tiger's skin. Whether it is a conscious or unconscious detail of the performance is an interesting question. Either way, it speaks to me of the depth of the piece and the pure openness of the performer. Love from IRAN for India, people, culture and the Great Traditional Music 😍😘🥰I heard many but this Lady made my Yoga & Meditation Raag Madhuwanti is a beautiful, soulful raag, typically performed in the late afternoon, and it's quite well-suited for the Rudraveena, with its deep, resonant tones. Madhuwanti belongs to the Thaat Todi, and it has a distinct, melancholic, and romantic character, often evoking feelings of longing and devotion. Here’s an outline of the raag to better capture its essence: Arohana (ascending scale): N r G M P N Ṡ Avarohana (descending scale): Ṡ n D P M G r S Vadi (most prominent note): Pa Samvadi (second prominent note): Sa Pakad (signature phrase): N r G M, P N Ṡ, Ṡ n D P In this raag, the komal (flat) notes are Re and Dha, while Ga, Ma (Tivra Ma), and Pa are shuddha (natural) notes. The raag is best known for its subtle, gliding movements between notes and the delicate use of Tivra Ma, which gives it a unique and tender quality. For the Rudraveena, the resonant and deep tones complement the mood of Madhuwanti, bringing out the longing and romance in a meditative, majestic way. It’s a captivating experience that highlights the depth and tranquility of the instrument, especially if played in a slow, contemplative tempo. iN ADDITION: Raag Madhuwanti is a beautiful late afternoon raga in Hindustani classical music, known for its soft, romantic, and emotional mood. It is usually played in the early afternoon and is associated with feelings of longing and devotion. The raga belongs to the Thaat Todi but differs from other Todi ragas because of its shuddha (natural) ma, rather than the komal (flat) ma. On the Rudraveena, a rare and ancient Indian instrument known for its deeply resonant and meditative sound, Raag Madhuwanti can evoke a powerful, emotive atmosphere. The raga’s scale combines both unique elements: Aaroh (ascent): N S G M D N S’ Avaroh (descent): S’ N D M G R S The key phrases emphasize Madhuwanti’s gentle, yearning nature, and on the Rudraveena, the use of microtones and the long, held notes are ideal to bring out its depth. This creates a serene and introspective performance, highlighting the raga’s emotional depth and the instrument's rich tonal quality. th-cam.com/video/j_pDkLCT8XI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=WxgDu_FYFTGs2Ilr However in above Video Mr. David Elkabir is mater on Raag Ahir Bhairav and Raag Madhuwanti are best for my Yoga and Meditation practices as they are quite distinct from each other, both in structure and emotional character, though they share a contemplative quality that can be beautifully expressed on the Rudraveena. Here’s a breakdown of the differences and unique aspects of Raag Ahir Bhairav: ### Raag Ahir Bhairav - **Thaat:** Bhairav - **Time of Performance:** Early morning - **Arohana (ascending):** S r G m P D n Ṡ - **Avarohana (descending):** Ṡ n D P m G r S - **Vadi:** r (Re) - **Samvadi:** D (Dha)
In Ahir Bhairav, the komal (flat) **Re** and **Ni** give it a soft and meditative quality, while the shuddha (natural) **Ga** and **Dha** add a balanced depth. The phrase structure is generally smooth and flowing, embodying a calm, devotional, and introspective feel. It’s a blend of Raag Bhairav and Raag Ahiri, which gives it a unique charm suited to serene, morning reflections. ### Raag Madhuwanti - **Thaat:** Todi - **Time of Performance:** Late afternoon - **Arohana:** N r G M P N Ṡ - **Avarohana:** Ṡ n D P M G r S - **Vadi:** Pa - **Samvadi:** Sa Madhuwanti has a romantic, yearning feel, often evoking feelings of longing. The Tivra (sharp) **Ma** is crucial, giving it a distinct flavor quite different from the devotional mood of Ahir Bhairav. ### On the Rudraveena Both raags have a naturally meditative and introspective quality that is deeply enriched by the resonance and depth of the Rudraveena. However, **Ahir Bhairav** is generally more serene and devotional, while **Madhuwanti** conveys a sense of romantic longing. Each raga’s mood and melodic movement offer a different experience on the Rudraveena, but both are deeply introspective in their own right.

Madhuwanti belongs to the Thaat Todi, and it has a distinct, melancholic, and romantic character, often evoking feelings of longing and devotion.
Here’s an outline of the raag to better capture its essence:
Arohana (ascending scale): N r G M P N Ṡ
Avarohana (descending scale): Ṡ n D P M G r S
Vadi (most prominent note): Pa
Samvadi (second prominent note): Sa
Pakad (signature phrase): N r G M, P N Ṡ, Ṡ n D P
In this raag, the komal (flat) notes are Re and Dha, while Ga, Ma (Tivra Ma), and Pa are shuddha (natural) notes.
It’s a captivating experience that highlights the depth and tranquility of the instrument, especially if played in a slow, contemplative tempo.
iN ADDITION:
Raag Madhuwanti is a beautiful late afternoon raga in Hindustani classical music, known for its soft, romantic, and emotional mood.
The raga’s scale combines both unique elements:
Aaroh (ascent): N S G M D N S’
Avaroh (descent): S’ N D M G R S
The key phrases emphasize Madhuwanti’s gentle, yearning nature, and on the Rudraveena, the use of microtones and the long, held notes are ideal to bring out its depth. This creates a serene and introspective performance, highlighting the raga’s emotional depth and the instrument's rich tonal quality.

However in above Video Mr. Here’s a breakdown of the differences and unique aspects of Raag Ahir Bhairav:
### Raag Ahir Bhairav
- **Thaat:** Bhairav
- **Time of Performance:** Early morning
- **Arohana (ascending):** S r G m P D n Ṡ
- **Avarohana (descending):** Ṡ n D P m G r S
- **Vadi:** r (Re)
- **Samvadi:** D (Dha)
In Ahir Bhairav, the komal (flat) **Re** and **Ni** give it a soft and meditative quality, while the shuddha (natural) **Ga** and **Dha** add a balanced depth. The phrase structure is generally smooth and flowing, embodying a calm, devotional, and introspective feel. It’s a blend of Raag Bhairav and Raag Ahiri, which gives it a unique charm suited to serene, morning reflections.
### Raag Madhuwanti
- **Thaat:** Todi
- **Time of Performance:** Late afternoon
- **Arohana:** N r G M P N Ṡ
- **Avarohana:** Ṡ n D P M G r S
- **Vadi:** Pa
- **Samvadi:** Sa
Madhuwanti has a romantic, yearning feel, often evoking feelings of longing. The Tivra (sharp) **Ma** is crucial, giving it a distinct flavor quite different from the devotional mood of Ahir Bhairav.
### On the Rudraveena
Both raags have a naturally meditative and introspective quality that is deeply enriched by the resonance and depth of the Rudraveena. However, **Ahir Bhairav** is generally more serene and devotional, while **Madhuwanti** conveys a sense of romantic longing. Each raga’s mood and melodic movement offer a different experience on the Rudraveena, but both are deeply introspective in their own right.
@@MajorKeyvanNourhaghighiiran sweetheart I am Madhuvanti Pal. And the raag I perform here is Raag Bhairav.

Blessed is the musician immersing in the world of such a divine music. Blessed are we in listening. Somehow this rendition of bhairav is bringing the essence of peace, calm, piosness, purity and a sense of detachment. Dhanyawaad 🙏

Love from France 🇫🇷 , this is amazing 😻 ! The few insights of indian musics I know are Shakti, Ravi, and that’s pretty much it… I love this approach of the sound and music as a « being » telling me things, so ma y things that can’t be transmitted with words !
This is so cool! I never straight up heard a rudra veena being played solo, this is my new favorite instrument. Incredible performance!!
incredible. I have listened to ustad asad ali khan for years and his work always totally blew my mind. seeing you play here like this takes it so much deeper. also I look forward to some percussion accompaniment in this fashion one day.
Absolutely "GORGEOUS"
sounding instrument!!!
Excellent artistry! A heartfelt
"Mantra"...in itself! ❤ 🙏🏿
I really love it all from the high notes to the low. It is a language that feels animal-like and otherworldly at the same time. Thank you!
I can tell you worked more than a decade (2?) to make this marvelous music! You have a great gift. I also know that you did not look as you do here, over those many years.
I accept that your producers put you here in this way. As if to say "this is not just a young prodigy, playing the music. Behold, this is the music of the Gods, speaking through this lovely form!"
I agree! This is a splendid perfomance!!
I love raag Bhairav, and it is a huge pleasure to hear it rendered so nicely as it is in this video.
Just gorgeous, your magnicent playing takes a direct line deep into my heart. Thankyou, Madhuvani, you are a master!
Hindu music touches my inner most cores, and transports me to the Vedas and way beyond, to the most ancient Puranas.
This is so well done, I have constant goosebumps throughout the whole performance.
Appreciate you sharing this with us. 🙏
unknowingly. I immersed into the song and started humming, then listened again and hummed again. If music really has the transcendental experience, its no different than this.
was listening to this. then i felt the need to watch and listen. i first heard this instrument from zia mouhiddin dagar, raga yaman. a beauty with immense depth. listening to this was a pleasure. i can only imagine the pleasure of performing this. greetings from turkey.
First of all I heartily salute to the GURUji and 100 and 1000 thanks for hard working behind this Saraswati. I believed that our indian Shatriya Sangeet has gone down to the earth but today deeply appraise tbat God is there. The great performance and the creation of sounds by fingers is unbelievable. The gesture of The player from her face that sound the raga is coming from heart ♥️. Thank s lot. Unbelievable.
Every chord you are playing the ragas in the middle of the line is humming like "OMKAARAM". that is simply Superb....
Wow, im extremely blown away by you ,and your handling of this beautiful instrument.
You are a true Master !!!
A great gift and Healer.
Beautiful Yogini playing, beautifully!
What a splendacious instrument of not only wondrous frequencies but the elegantly superb workmanship of that elegant piece of work along with the skilled touch of the studious musician!!!
The nuanced pitch bending style in Indian music is hypnotically beautiful. That instrument projects incredible craftsmanship and a very long legacy of creation. Just amazing ❤
Absolute Divine ✨✨✨✨
Went on quite a journey while it lasted and I felt the Divine speak to me through these tunes telling me what it is that I need to know in this moment 😌💫

The beautifull deep of the *Veena, played by a living goddess!
IAM so enchanted 😊to see and hear a technicaly perfect played raga Session from a astonishing beautifull goddess of healing vibes!
Always wondering how the deepest feelings of a culture is represented and reflected by its music and what magic well played, technically simple melodies, but with heartfull effort in applying the effects and technics, can help to find inner Balance!
I can see literally how u have to concentrate and have to rearange fine positions for the right angle and power in the fingertipps.
The player has to be fine turned and Balanced at all levels physically, emotional and mental to cast this kind of spiritual ' Heling field'!
I play spanish Guitar too and almost forgot how deep a simple but well played session can heal!
Thanx and wonderfull Experieces!
*AAWWGG* How much would the World enjoy it if we could jamm and spann some new culture crossing healing vibes together (well thats what every male musican would think of maybe)
So much for the Inspiration! A Lot of Thankfulls and Regards for this Amazing 'Drop'.

Beautiful stream of conscious! I was mesmerised the first time I heard Ravi Shankar on the Concert for Bangladesh LP as a kid. Outstanding exploration of sound and song
Perhaps the only artist who manages to go beyond the timbre of her instrument. I really like his meditation in music.

Conclusion is Dear Madhuvanti is trying to keep Bhairav young...... every time you can see that old artists sing and treat Bhairav as old person.....if someone like madhuvanti treats a raga as young as she .....then what will happen?
Answer is simple: Raga will bless her and enjoy with her...... There is no need of another comments.
the best sitar music ever! Loving the low end string bends. Also the scale/raga is perfect for the moment
Absolutely beautiful and inspiring. Thank you for the great performance...love the outfit.🙏🙇♂️
The sound is so glorious so wonderful so perfect so amazing. I just had the penultimate experience while listening to this. Thank you very much take care.
So precious and comforting.
Beautiful instrument. You play with conviction. Thank you for this reminder.
It takes massive balls to play this. Good job.
Nevert heard such a deeeep base. The raga Bhirav and Rudra Veena are perfect match.

Beautiful woman, beautiful instrument, beautiful spiritual music!
I just bought a gitaar and tryna learn it and this is exactly what I like playing but couldn’t play now found something what i wanted to hear. Thanks a lot🙏
Such a wonderful performance, Madhuvanti 💚 Half way through tears were streaming from both eyes. You present the image of Bhairavi herself. I cannot praise you more than that.
Thank you so much 🙂
Namaste - What a pleasure for me to see and hear you and your wonderful instrument. I have loved this instrument for a very long time and I am very happy to hear this now played by a woman and even with freer, more experimental recordings that I have found of you. It is good to appreciate and adopt the traditions and at the same to be open, free and curious. Thank you very much for your sounds that have found me in the Swiss Alps. I will follow your developments. All the love stefan
Superb playing, such precision and feeling!
I thought women were not supposed to play Dhrupad and/or Rudra Veena.. This lady is exceptional. Better even than the Patriarch of Veena, Zia Mohiuddin Dagar (if such things can be said or even have any meaning..). Congratulations! Truly excellent. Respect. (Very nice instrument too! Excellent sustain and seems to have better balance of power of sound between main strings and chikaris than usual ).
@@alexandroskarsiotis please 🙏🏼 with all due respect to your feelings, which is needless to say, overwhelming, I am nothing compared to Bade Ustaad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. It’s true there were dogmatic superstitious reservations against women playing or even touching the Rudra Veena, but that’s long past(I’d like to believe, definitely not the case as observed in the comments). 🙏🏼🙏🏼

@@MadhuvantiLoL 😂 Veena is the instrument of none other than Saraswati, a woman. You lost respect unfortunately. Unfortunate Kaliyug is spreading fast & wide. People of Musicless culture are appreciated by usurping the mindful culture. How unfortunate. Thanks.
Pierces the Soul, beautiful.
can’t believe i’ve heard this type of instrument so many times but have never seen it before!! so cool looking!!!!
Beautiful beyond words! Beyond thinking! 😌🙏🔥✨
Om Om Sai Ram , very very beautiful...
.. the (seemingly) incredible lightness of raag bhairavi performed on rudraveena ... thank you for this experience ...
I love the percussive feels in Jod so much, as well how faster pace it and that bass just hits my stomach with its vibrations, I can only imagine how powerful that bass is in person. Alaap is just a slow paced introspection that feels brilliant. This entire performance is so relaxing that I was dazing to the sweet succour sounds of Jhala. You are beautifully talented with your Rudra Veena. Like omg.
Timeless, otherworldly, boundless, Beautiful, AMAZINGLY Eternal music!!
The deep sounds are so evocative of the wise, akin to an ancient sage speaking through the instrument
What is this 😂 nother youtube turn. Im watching 😂 and i love it, put 🥁 drums 🪘 and its 😻 beautiful
great playing. i like how this recording has the low frequencies more audible so we can enjoy the full range of the instrument.
Gorgeous & sublime! Thanks & greetings from Germany. I ordered the vinyl now.
Thank you very much!
finally i saw a perfectionist in Veena in Bhairava Raaga.. Please Try Some Another Ragaas too.. Well Done Keep it Up!!
I literally don't understand what's their actual problem is about her dress. Just close your eyes and listen to the divine melody man.
Don't release your frustration in her comment box.🙏 And just support music not your 200 years old conservative mentality
Agreed, from the first notes played any rational persons criticism would have melted away if they even had any to begin with, she's beautiful and dressed comfortably for the performance, the sitar is wonderfully crafted, and the music even more so, im very grateful we keep the arts alive however they appear
Безусловно
People aren't entirely wrong if their comments are about decorum.
However, it shouldn't at all be the focus of anyone's conversation.
This is beyond divine! Top class stuff... what an amazing musical experience! Inspiring me to get back to my Sitar and produce some collabs.. thanks cheers

I have no idea what instrument this is or where is made, but i wish i could go visit wherever this music came from and taste the food and smell the spices and incense at the markets. Anywhere that can produce such a banger of an instrument and melodies, is a whole vibe and i am so glad i clicked on this.
So hauntingly beautiful, in all the best ways imaginable.
