2:04 - Asking the sound engineer in the middle of an absolutely tight performance to amp up his backup singers says it all about the kind of gentleman Bowie was.
To me, this is the best version of this song that exists. Their drummer especially was really grooving, quite difficult to play the song on drums exactly the same. I recently found this song and I am incredibly happy that I did!
When he died, I watched this video 4x a day for weeks. I just love how he fucking cool he was. That solo section where he’s clapping and smiling and then that kick. He always commanded the best musicians, and this band played this song in such a unique way. Really one of my favorite live Bowie videos.

This morning, I was driving my car and then, the radio stopped, and they said "we just know that the great David Bowie passed away". I nearly had a car crash. After the shock, I'm now crying while watching this. Thank you dear David/Ziggy/Major Tom, you changed my life. I will never forget your incredible eyes and look. Thank you again. Miss you beyond measure. Have a nice trip, Major Tom.

So true. I saw him coke up in the 80s and it was not a bad concert, but he looked miserable and barely said a thing. He was amazingly engaged with and warm towards the audience when I saw him in the 90s and especially in 2004.
Since David's passing I've spent a good amount of time learning more of his wonderful music he left for us to enjoy, and these TH-cam performances we are fortunate to watch. I watched and read interviews and was a bit turned off by interviewers over his career who in some way inferred he does not have a 'real' job as 'we others do' or similar references. He worked for a living starting from the bottom working his entire career as an artist and was so great he climbed to the top of the mountain.
What is it with this maudlin trend on TH-cam comments of people picking songs for their funeral--as if a funereal is some music video or Wes Anderson film

I was always a Bowie fan, and being a d.j. I thought I would probably get to meet him as I did many musicians, instead I met him in the oddest of settings, near my home, at a swimming hole in Woodstock. I noticed him the way I notice most attractive famlies. and we nodded, and smiled at one another. As the day wore on, He walked toward me, and as soon as he got close I realized who he was, by the eye color and the accent. "Excuse me, he said , but my family and I are moving, would you happen to know where I might get some boxes?". Well I guess you could try the liquor store, they always have a lot and usually give them away free". Ahh the liquour store, what a great idea"! he said I never would've thought of it". We talked a bit more ,_ ( about what we had in common, family, a love of music, me a d. j. with some backup singing, acting, me a few small parts in independent films, his including the 80 's film "The Hunger" , he was surprised and happy that I remembered it. After signing a tshirt for me, we all started packing our things up, and he said I hope to see you again, but something tells me I will hear from you in the future. I hope so I said, I' d like to make a film someday" " Well I belive you will, but in any event , you' re a star now". Thank you, that mean' s a lot coming from you. And it did just goes to show you we are all stars, and most important of all, David Bowie was a rarity, a star, an actor, a performer, musician, familyman, gentlemen, friend, and well I could go on and on, but I like to think he was and is of another world, one where he has returned to live ,still shining bright! Thank you David for a wonderful day, and all the wonderful art and music you have left behind. My family, my friends, and WKARMA RADIO will never forget you.. Your music will never cease to delight us all. I'm Maribeth, and I. hope you are all safe and warm, sorry weekends over, but I will try to keep the party going, heres David kicking off some great music, remember when there are no stars in the sky its cause we are all on the street! 😘

+Maribeth That is an excellent story and so glad that he turned out to be as much of a gentleman as I had hoped. Thanks for sharing! If anyone does a biography on him, your story should be in it!

Oh baby he's so sweet. But honestly how somebody can look THAT good in their fifties? Incredible concert, this song is so good, it's one of my favorites. David Bowie is the man, one of the greatest and most magnificent personages in the world of music (and not only) ever. Such a shame he's not with us anymore. I wish I could've seen him live.
Fantastic version of this song. Worth listening to multiple times -- you'll hear new things. Bowie's voice was right on, the backup singers were wonderful, and then there's that bass player. Easily one of my favorite bass performances of all time. And he wasn't even the regular bassist!
in terms of pure cool, as well as imagination, writing ability, and sensitivity, this man will outlast all other rocn and roll contemporaries, insluding the Beatles and the Rolling Stones
I'm only 23 but so upset about music these days. So I'd rather listening to music like this. I kept my hope till the day of his death to see this wonderful inspiring human being live someday. I'm from switzerland but I swear I'd go to any place on earth to see this legend. And now this dream is something that will never happen. But I keep my hope in music, that it will somehow find the good way again. I'm jealous of everyone who had the honor and joy to live/growup/being teenie during these awesome times between 60-90. Someday when I'll have children I will introduce them Bowie as early as possible.
+mandoholikerin HI mandoholikerin .... I have spent the last 72 hours reading/devouring tributes/articles/music clips/interviews .... just so damn unbelievable that David Bowie is gone. I was scrolling through here reading comments and if it is any consolation, I am sorry you never had the chance to see Bowie in concert.I was so lucky to have seen him a dozen times from 1974 through 1983. Here's my story from the first show on the Diamond Dogs tour in Detroit Michigan: David Bowie - Cobo Arena, June 23rd,1974 - Diamond Dogs Tour. I borrowed my Mom's Instamatic, and had front row seats. This concert is what hooked me on photography !!! This was at Cobo Arena. June 23rd, 1974. This was my 9th concert that I had attended. There were about 6 or 8 of us and we had Tier B tickets. I was stoked. My Mom gave me her Instamatic to take to the show, as she knew how much I loved Bowie. I started wandering around and walked onto the main floor, with no one asking me any questions at all. I walked right past the usher at the end of the 1st section and strolled right up to the front of the stage. I was there for about 2 minutes looking around, and a guy to my left in the 1st row, was tapping the empty seat next to him and said, "Do you want to sit here"? I sat and asked if the seat was taken, and he told me that the seats were comp from a connection, his friend couldn't make it, and the seat was mine. The lights suddenly went out, he tapped my shoulder, slapped me five, and said "Welcome to the front row, enjoy the show". What a way to see my rock hero !!! And I had my Mom's Instamatic. Fabulous show ... excellent seats, a wonderful memory !!! Let me tell you, the experience of going to a Bowie concert was incredible. I feel so fortunate to have seen David Live !!!
+timishere1925 Thanks !!! This was my 9th concert overall, and 1st Bowie concert. My older brother David, ( I am #2 of 8) brought home the Ziggy Stardust LP after hearing it from a friend. He then brought home Hunky Dory about a week later, and we got MWSTW a month later. I was 15 that Summer of 1972, and 17 when Diamond Dogs was released. I bought Aladdin Sane and Pin Ups when they were released in 1973, and I was so impressed with Bowie's music, his fashion, his artistry. Found a bootleg of the Ziggy Tour at a local record store, and was blown away with the live sound. My brother Daniel, who was14 months younger, we bought cool flared jeans to go along with our 4 inch clogs that we walked miles in. LOL My sister Diane,#4, always heard me playing Bowie, she 12 in the Summer of 1972, and she and I were talking this week about how Bowie was ingrained in our musical blood for so many years, and what a great loss it is.
+denrosz No, it's one of my biggest regrets. I feel fortune to have something such as this on video, although I realize it doesn't begin to compare with seeing him live in concert. You're a very good story teller. I love hearing about the fashion, etc. You're really able to paint a picture with your words. Thank you again.
David Bowie, a songwriting genius and a true Gentleman. I love this song and this live version is fantastic, until the keyboard solo, the original solo had a hauntingly beautiful melody with a synth sound that matched. This solo sounds like a piano player practicing their scales with a “that’ll do” synth preset. Other than that, this is an awesome live version of a brilliant song. rip David Bowie, thank you for your creations.
A brilliant & Amazing Man ... Totally agree ... Absolutely ... and then I try to cover a few songs as Space Boy . on YT ... hahahaha .... what a laugh.
I think I was feeling particularly emotional that day, but I still agree with what I've said. There are a few great bands and musicians, I just think it's a little rare..

Bowie looked so sexy here. He was sexy during all his eras of course. I miss him. He left behind so much incredible music and I'm so thankful youtube exists so the world can share and watch Bowie-vision for as long as we have internet and until a better site comes along to stream history. Thanks for uploading this video!
My favourite Bowie track. But man he's gotten so old over the last 15 years...wow, the millennium was 15 years ago already! Time really waits for no one.
+Largactyl Kid He defintely knew his fate in these last videos,,horrible. He was relatively a young guy,,I saw him a couple times live in the 80's.I was hoping to see him one more time,,
+Joe Gomez Thank you, it's a good version too. But at the BBC there was Mike Garson, Holly Palmer, Gail Ann Dorsey, Mark Plati.... Fantastic band...Only the top !
At the time of commenting, there’s 1.1K people who have given this a thumbs down. Those people have no concept of what a unique artist Bowie was, an incredible performer delivering a flawless song.
It's so lovely to see him so happy! And he said in an interview that he doesn't even like to perform. Maybe because it's because it's such an intimate venue. I could see how they might like the intimacy of that-same as _adore_ seeing artists in smaller venues & not arenas.
Who is from 2024? Thank you, David. You are great!

+Maribeth Stern Sounds like he was a very nice man!I wish I'd got to meet him!
+Julie Evans : yes he was a lovely person, very kind , and down to earth,( kinda. funny that he played the man who fell from earth,( lol) .. I really enjoyed the time I spent with him, and his family( they all seemed very happy and sweet too). I will always cherish the fact that I got to meet a living legend and that he turned out to be all I admired and more. Thanks for. writing.😘
+Maribeth Stern you sound like a beautiful star as well. Thank you for sharing. God bless
+Maribeth That is an excellent story and so glad that he turned out to be as much of a gentleman as I had hoped. Thanks for sharing! If anyone does a biography on him, your story should be in it!
+elucid8 Thank you for a lovely compliment. DAVID BOWIE FAN'S (OF COURSE, WHO ELSE) ARE SOME OF THE MOST WONDERFUL PEOPLE I' VE HAD THE PLEASURE, TO HAVE GOTTEN MAIL FROM. I'm sorry that I forgot ,your name, but to the lovely lady, I think your name is Paula, You said I sound like a b
Best version, that funked up baseline!
Amazing. The bass is fantastic. What a version!! Every piece and person playing is brilliant!
No one can ever beat how good he was :) I wasn't even born when this was filmed and I love it.
What I liked about David he was so creative in his music he was himself
That bass player is AMAZING!
She was. Gail Ann Dorsey was DB's bassist of choice since '95 practically to his death.
@@vegdagol2843 Plati is amazing on this. Well versed producer as well. Guy knows his way around the studio and instruments.
in terms of pure cool, as well as imagination, writing ability, and sensitivity, this man will outlast all other rocn and roll contemporaries, insluding the Beatles and the Rolling Stones
Here's my story from the first show on the Diamond Dogs tour in Detroit Michigan:
David Bowie - Cobo Arena, June 23rd,1974 - Diamond Dogs Tour.
+denrosz so just to be clear, that was your 9th Bowie concert or 9th concert in general? Great story by the way.
+timishere1925 Were you ever able to see Bowie in concert?
+denrosz No, it's one of my biggest regrets. I feel fortune to have something such as this on video, although I realize it doesn't begin to compare with seeing him live in concert. You're a very good story teller. I love hearing about the fashion, etc. You're really able to paint a picture with your words. Thank you again.
I listen to him every day, he is my daily dose❤️🥰it never gets boring. I love you so much dear David❤️❤️I miss you every minute❤️❤️
The first time I hear this live version and it gave me goosebumps. David is sorely missed.
Tears for me! Amazing performance!
Such a beautiful, exotic creature. Irreplaceable.
His hair his style so perfect
I never got a chance to go to his concert =(
+IamJacksColon4 I was thinking the same thing last night when I heard the news.
+IamJacksColon4 Same here ... but i always knew that i think
+IamJacksColon4 I was lucky I got to see him 4 times.
!!!!!!
+IamJacksColon4 Feel the same way...!!! I guess most young people dont know all the music he wrote!!!
He's was such an amazing talent. This is my favorite version of this song ❤️.
A brilliant & Amazing Man ... Totally agree ... Absolutely ... and then I try to cover a few songs as Space Boy . on YT ... hahahaha .... what a laugh.
I find it hard to believe David was 50 years old here. Has anyone fact checked that this was actually from 2000, or did he just look this good at 50?
Actually he is 53 years old here! He was born 1947. Have you seen his 50th birthday concert in 1997? You couldn't believe he is 50!!!!
I can't believe I’m crying right now. It almost makes me wish that I was born a little earlier. I'm sorry, but our music today does not compare.
+KALEIDO jess (Jesselapotter) No,it does'nt!
I think I was feeling particularly emotional that day, but I still agree with what I've said. There are a few great bands and musicians, I just think it's a little rare..
+KALEIDO jess (Jesselapotter) Music today doesn't compare to Bowie. Music yesterday doesn't. Music tomorrow won't. Nothing compares to David Bowie.
Напишу по-русски, есть ли кто из наших? Господи, он прекрасен!!! Я влюбилась, я в восторге, я в восхищении! Искренность, актёрское мастерство, живость исполнения - это не каждому дано!
I'm also obsessed with this video...,what a beautiful man he was , creative not afraid of changes and pioneering the music industry.
That band just blows me away. So great
It will always be a joy to listen to Bowie.
Keep him alive for our children
+Emily Payne I got shivers reading that
sadly no child would hear good music like this.
+i am MAD I did I am 9
+Paulette Galloway well All the David Bowie song I bought my mom a David Bowie album but it is mostly for me
+Emily Payne When I have kids I'll defiantly introduce them to Bowie.
This Genius wrote the soundtrack to my life ,,,I miss him 💔
These five minutes of bliss give me five more minutes of life expectancy each time I listen to it.
So it cancels out?
Really is incredible and I could listen to this over and over again .
I’m a bass player and I’ve been trying to learn this for years .
Can’t quite nail it !
And everyone I play this for , that never heard it live before , are all in agreement.
They Love It !!!!!❤️🤠🔪🎵
Bowie looked so sexy here. He was sexy during all his eras of course. I miss him. He left behind so much incredible music and I'm so thankful youtube exists so the world can share and watch Bowie-vision for as long as we have internet and until a better site comes along to stream history. Thanks for uploading this video!
This performance was perfection.
He is not singing, he is living in this song...
i have listened this song like 30 times today
Greatest ever version of this song IMO.
His smile/joy on the hooks is still absolutely infectious 23 years later!
I lovecthis live version.
He seems so calm, healthy and happy
My favourite Bowie track. But man he's gotten so old over the last 15 years...wow, the millennium was 15 years ago already! Time really waits for no one.
+David Datura It would have been great to be at one of these shows,,,he still looked like a young guy,,,he's now aged,,,time sucks!
+Joe April Certainly does...
+David Datura "Time really waits for no one." indeed..
+Joe April Now we know why he looked so old & drawn in his last videos. Still, he's left us with so much great music & film.
+Largactyl Kid He defintely knew his fate in these last videos,,horrible. He was relatively a young guy,,I saw him a couple times live in the 80's.I was hoping to see him one more time,,
The bass line in this live version almost obfuscates all the other instruments. Nice play Mark Plati....
xxamonixx yes, it's perfection
xxamonixx you can see Bowie gesturing to the mix "turn his bass up" at 2:05
it is awesome!!
That bass rocks...perfect!
It's perfect, it's the train they are all riding on. Kit work is very fine, too.
Just think of all of the talent we grew up with. Almost took it for granted. I didn't realize that we were living in the golden age of music
Brilliant song what a talent we will never see again I'm on a binge playing David Bowie songs
The most beautiful version I've never heard
+renaud0566 You might want to check the one from L'Olympia Paris
+Joe Gomez
Thank you, it's a good version too. But at the BBC there was Mike Garson, Holly Palmer, Gail Ann Dorsey, Mark Plati.... Fantastic band...Only the top !
Bowie, you and your music are the only boyfriend I will ever need
Jajajaj jajajjaja jajsjajsj ajajajs
I might know why you are laughing, but I'm curious, What's so funny?
¿Alguna razón para ser grosero conmigo? Yo no lo he sido contigo
Eloísa García disculpeme y cuidese mucho.
Igualmente, y sigue oyendo a Bowie
At the time of commenting, there’s 1.1K people who have given this a thumbs down. Those people have no concept of what a unique artist Bowie was, an incredible performer delivering a flawless song.
I am very happy to have personally met David Bowie. An extraordinary man who radiated contagious joy.
Man, it's hard to believe that he only had barely 16 years left in him here. He's so full of life.
I know!
Sia
yeah was thinking the same
It's so lovely to see him so happy! And he said in an interview that he doesn't even like to perform. Maybe because it's because it's such an intimate venue. I could see how they might like the intimacy of that-same as _adore_ seeing artists in smaller venues & not arenas.
he might not have been so happy if he only knew he had only 16 years left to live..............
