Team GB's quartet of Edward Clancy, Geraint Thomas, Steven Burke and Peter Kennaugh set a new world record of 3:51.659 in the Velodrome for the men's cycling team pursuit event at the London 2012 Olympic Games (3 August 2012).
Cycling is among the rare sports that have always featured on the Olympic programme. Road cycling, however, was not on the programme of the Paris 1900, St Louis 1904 or London 1908 Games, while track cycling wasn't in the programme of the Stockholm 1912 Games.
The first road event in Olympic history took place in 1896 on the marathon route at the first Games of the modern era in Athens. The race started in Athens, headed towards Marathon, then returned to Athens, at the Phaliron velodrome.
Olympic cycling was added to the women's programme in Los Angeles in 1984, with an individual road event.

😂 😂 you is one hilarious fellow
😂😂😂😂
Hahahaha!!
Lmaooooooo
Literally
I dont understand what's happening, but i like it
+vlKenzo its about how much time one team needs to make a lap.
The team that do a lap in the lowest time, wins.
Or the team that do X laps in the lowest time wins... something like that
No its really not, it is who completes the 3000m in the shortest time wins
+Calum Caldwell Nearly... It's 4000m.
They are riding bikes
Lol right me too
As a British person it made me so proud to have the Olympics hosted in our country and witnessing Team GB excel in all the events especially the cycling. I hope we do well in Rio!
The United States dominated with the most medals:) 104 in total. Plus the most Gold and Silver medals at 46 and 29, respectively. The UK had a total of 65 medals:)
Myles S. Sepleka To be fair America has a much larger population.
***** Chinas population is a whole different kettle of of fish though.

Dont know why, but the center shot when they both cross the camera in opposite directions makes me laugh

Larry Wang, that must be it
lol thats what it was!!!! xD
+KyleJPie10 your actually right😂😂
London 2012 still sends shivers down my spine
The atmosphere in there in 2012 was unbelievable - Team GB were unreal
I'm seriously loving watching all these videos back right now. However, I remember watching most of these events live on TV at the time, and if this channel shows us anything, it's how much better the BBC's commentary was.
Agreed. It really disappoints me that the BBCs coverage doesn't seem to be available anywhere
There is a BBC x5 DVD compilation of highlights that includes this race…. It’s epic.
For anyone who's wondering why the first cyclist goes to the back of the line, there's drafting/slipstreaming that makes it easier to pedal for the back of the line. So the first cyclist spends the most power, and they're taking turns on the first one
The amount of skill involved in this... wow
I don't know why, but this event kinda scares me a bit. Like if one guy goes too fast or messes up you could end up severely hurting someone.
+Porleark Tuy sounds like nascar
I know I'm late, but these are fixed gear bicycles, with an incredibly large gear. Sudden acceleration isn't an issue
YesbutNO I mean that can still happen even with a bunch of practice , and you don’t have to be rude
@@fairyessence._ Very unlikely though. Even new riders can keep pace after a few months. Fixed gear allows very fine speed control like that since you can resist with your legs.
@@KandiKlover yea but you look at events like th tour de france where you have pros from all round the world no one is a perfect cyclist and even the tiniest wobble especially km the track at 60kmh+ could knock you or your teammates down
TH-cam
2012: naaaa
2019: we are going to recommend this
😂😂
Recommended this in 2021 now. Yeesh
Just hearing the crowd roar, it's definitely going to be missed in Tokio.
Tokyo
@@very_creeper well that's how it is spelled in my native language
@Tom Paps even in swahili it is Tokio
You're not even English and you support chelshit. Get a life lmao

12 year old me was there in the audience! Was so great to see Team GB win a few gold medals that day
I wish I went
How are they keeping their speeds perfectly in sync? Not crashing into each other?
pro. plus its fixed gear so you just have to pace your pedals.
Loads and loads of training
fixed gear, no brakes, no free wheel, lots and lots of practice and will to win
+Star Sloth Five things that help I think:
1. Lack of brakes. No random, unforeseen changes in speed (i.e. from braking in a panic).
2. Single speed. No dead period when changing gears
3. Fixed drivetrain. No coasting to slow down abruptly, must always pedal.
4. It's team pursuit, so should never overlap with competitors.
5. The nice, even surface of the velodrome.
+Star Sloth That's not nearly as hard as it might look like it would be. The relative speed is what matters. The gears on these bikes are so massive, if one of them suddenly stomped on the pedals he would only accelerate slowly. Keeping the same pace as the bike in front of you is not something you even have to think about. (Think about the peloton in racing, where 200 cyclists are going the same speed bunched together way closer than this without crashing (usually :) ).
The atmosphere in that velodrome was wonderful!
The shot of both teams crossing looks animated....like a transition scene from a cartoon network show😄😄
When they cross in the center is too funny😂😂😂
Never heard of this, what a cool sport!
why am i watching this?
same
agreed
same
because that guy at 3:59 is flipping off the Australians

This sport seems like something out of a Wes Anderson movie.
Both hilarious and dramatic
tak paham lah aku kamere dia
The shot of the two teams riding in opposite directions is definetely soenhting out of a wes Anderson movie
Especially if they could incorporate a Derny bike from the keirin.
I didn't even knew that this was a thing, much less a sport, but for some reason I can't stop watching these
One main advantage of Great Britain team is that they accelerate way faster than other teams at the start. They seem to be able to keep steadier pace. Well done.
Hello!!
That’s so false. They have been on the same pace as many teams
Play this video at 2 times speed and THAT'S a new world record!!!!
+Henry Wang i guess its faster than rap god
Tried that, but my stopwatch also ran at double-pace. 😉
No, then the time would move 2x faster too
Team GB is almost all on Team Sky. And people wonder why Froome is so dominant when he has these guys pulling for him

A well ridden Pursuit race is a thing of beauty, such a great rhythm.
And now, Geraint Thomas will be sipping champagne in the maillot jaune on the Champs-Élysées! What a rider.

GB always dominating this event
Best two weeks of my life :]
The Golden era of British cycling. I hope we keep funding it to bring the next generation through.
Before 2012 never even watched track cycling before. But it was the most exciting. Even better than the athletic relays. The speed is mad in this event
It was definitely the best Olympic outfit ever designed. That's for sure. Stella McCartney did an awesome job.
yeah much nicer than the current ones.
I remember watching this live at like 1am. Wow.
Those guys are crazy close together basically the whole time...
If you were superhuman and could cycle nonstop at Team GB's average speed (62.16 km/h) you could get from London to Beijing in 5.5 days 🚲⚡
This will be memorable .The best olympics in so many years
Amazed at how many people in the comment section are ‘confused’ and have never seen this before. Perhaps they’re American?
I'm American and have never seen this before. Though I'm certainly not a rider, I know enough about cycling to know that wind resistance is definitely a thing, even inside a building. The only thing I was 'confused' about was the goal of the race. I had to come to the comment section (or I could have googled it) to figure out it was first team to have 3 riders hit 4km. Going purely by the title ("pursuit" in particular) with no knowledge of the sport, I was thinking partway through that the winning condition was having one team's lead racer lap the other team's lead racer. In other words, I thought it was a vs. match, when it was actually a time trial. Still interesting.
For the uninitiated, the 2018 tour de france winner and a 2 time world time trial champion are part of these squads.
I REMEMBER WATCHING THIS YEARS BACK WHEN I WAS LIKE 9
I have no idea why TH-cam recommended this but I'm glad I watched it😂
Its funny to watch this now and see how much it's changed as an event. The gears are bigger, the aerodynamic positions are different, the turns and tactics are different and it's overall a lot faster. a 3:51 would have only got 8th in the 2020 world championships, crazy
Beating the Aussies makes it even sweeter,
Me watching 2024😂
Some sports are just beautiful man.
Why is everyone so confused with this sport?
Awesome Islanders Hockey Videos would have thought it was pretty simple
I for one have never heard or seen this sport until now. I literally have no idea what it’s called and do not know the purpose. It’s not an American thing unless I’ve been living under a rock for 23 years 🥴
Because it involves basic math and that's hard for dum-dums.
Africaans people
I think its because of the riders dropping out. Without explanation it looks like you are supposed to rotate because of the rules and play as a team, not use teamwork to go fast with it being ok to lose players
Cycling has improved so much in the last few yrs. So much faster
jesus lol, one of those bikes is enough to pay for my college xD
Covid 19 and the TH-cam algorithm doing his work.
100 times better than the NBA
How does one even get involved is this 😭like I can’t imagine waking up one day and deciding to pursue this
IKR like who grows up and says I want to pursuit lol
You just get involved in bike racing and end up in the event that suites your talents. Two of the riders on this British team (Wiggins and Thomas) also won the Tour de France. Another Ed Clancy won multiple Olympic and world championship medals across different events. They’re just great bike racers in general who can hold unbelievable power for 4k’s.
I don't even know this is a sport. But this is the most satisfying Olympic sport ever. LOL 😅
All I can think about is looking up highlights of people crashing on when the front guy switches lol
Anyone watching in 2019 nope just me
okay first time I've ever seen this sport and here is what I have gathered, to start you need 4 people they switch leader because of energy; wind resistance etc. 3 people are only required to cross the finish line. they drop the 4th (slowest) rider if necessary.
Current world record is 3 min 50.265 by GB & NI at Rio 2016, wiggins, doull, clancy burke.
Proud to be British
Never Tire of Watching this!.
who's looking forward to Rio 2016
The world record is now 7 seconds quicker than this!
When?
Im sure those bikes cost $20 at WalMart....lol
Xerophyte
I was kidding man. i know those bikes can easily break 10k, more than that depending on the brand. $20 couldnt by nothing for these bikes
+Samuel Deutsch Bruh these cost 34k as they are specially built..I was there live so i know it ;))
Those cost easily more that 7*
7K
+Random Guy they cost 10-25 thousand
Wonderful performance congratulations to all participants 👌👌👌
I bought my first fixie 8 months ago and I love it gotta find a velodrome now
The way they started pushing at 2.5k was remarkable
jeez i never even knew such a sport existed!
You didn't know cycling existed?
Excelente video 👌👌
Can someone please explain what's happening to me
+neva l they like to ride bikes...that is all i got from it
+neva l The lead riders have it the hardest, they are "pulling" the rest of their team due to them taking the full force of wind resistance. Everyone in the back has less resistance, sometimes up to ~40%, from riding in the forward rider's wake. They swap off leaders to give them a rest and the next person in line "pulls" the rest.
+Damuse8191 if resistance is less than how the others not crashed in to 1st yet they sync perfectly
+jayesh soni That part is just training. Im sure you can jog behind someone slower than you. With enough training they do it with bikes. Plus, that is why when they get tired they just swerve off. That way they decrease the chance of someone running into them when they go slower.
+Damuse8191 thanks
0:52 Australian spectator pops hand up to signal ‘Go Aussies’
this us amazing i never seem this before 😱😱
that record won't be broke anytime soon
fancy and Impressive. in my country they don't give importance to any other sport except cricket. it's depressing
What country?
Where do you live

Bradley Wiggins.
@@alidawson6118 nah its definitely noel
That's 62.16kph (38.6mph) time-averaged speed, from a standing start.
Surprised Rohan Dennis didn’t do better, considering he’s the world ITT champion
this was 2012, Rohan Dennis is champion now in 2019
The fact that we do this as humans is so hilariously awesome 😂
If the track was pizza this is an excellent way of cutting it
i feel like an alien trying to understand outer world beings
How did I get to start watching this I'm a swimmer
Imagine how fast these dudes are going, especially how light that bike is
Track bikes are not light for something made out of carbon. They weigh around 20-25 lbs. which is more than your average top-level aluminum bike which costs a quarter of what those track bikes cost. It is designed to have as little drag coefficient as possible.
Really?

I ride a fixed gear, would I have to take off my front brake in order to ride at my local velodrome?
Campbell Gildersleeve Ask them.
Campbell Gildersleeve Probably and need shorter cranks
Okay.
+Campbell Gildersleeve for lots of reasons no, you would need a track specific bike
+Campbell Gildersleeve It depends on the type of fixed gear bike you have. Does it have track geometry? Especially the raised bottom bracket? Most velodromes do not allow brakes due to safety reasons. Also you normally should not need shorter cranks on the velodrome, velodrome rules are different for each velodrome. Some velodromes may have steeper banks than others. There are people who ride custom 190mm cranks that do just fine on the velodrome tracks. Best bet is to call your local velodrome and ask as much questions needed. Even better if you still don't know if your bike is track legal, take your bike there and ask the staff. Happy riding
You know you've got a good team when you have time to set up a victory formation before the end
GlyntTheCat except thats not a victory formation...
How did GB lose the rider at the very end? (4:50)
+Darell Day because its measured by the time of the third rider, so the guy who dropped off the back (I think Geraint Thomas) did a 'death pull' where they aim to spend themselves with about half a lap - 2 laps to go
When the front wheel of the third biker crosses the finish line the time is counted. Thus, if one rider "burns out" like one did from each team they can take a "death pull" or "death lap" and they take it easy.
+Josh Burrows what do you mean by "spend themselves"?
+Jesse Chen use all of their energy
how come they change riders from first to last on the curves? you'd think that a team of 3 would waste less time than a team of 4 since there is one less rider to wait for?
Team GB set the new world record
How do their wheels not collide?
It looks like it, but these guys are trained for years and years and they're extremely thin carbon wheels :)
+Ivan TRUST thru practice
teamwork
Firstly I opened the Gangnam style and I came to this video hoowww ? 😂
why does one of the Australian riders have a different helmet to their team
It's personal preference
i guess its easier for him to later pick himself out of the crowd on video.
Must have left his at home
Those suits must be tight if you can see his helmet!
mate..
It's so satisfying idk why
Even the fourth GB rider beat the Australian team!
Awesome, but this is so 2012. Time to show Italy's 3:42 ride from Tokyo!
Can someone explain the sport I'm confused on what the point is !?
It's basically a team time trial. Each team starts with 4 riders on opposite sides of the track. The time is measured until the 3rd rider finishes. Winner is the team that covers the distance (4000m) in the least amount of time, or if one team catches up to the other at any point in the race then they win.
+nitfitnit why do they switch out though
The guy in front has to work much harder than the rest to break the wind, the others draft off of him, so they take turns at the front to spread the work. In some cases the strongest rider on the team takes longer turns at the front.
the one in front uses more energy than those behind him, that's why they all switch positions.
Take loads of banned substances then go ride for your country, simple.
Brilliant!
Imagine if the biker in front farts 😶
Ed Clancy is the best opening pursuit rider in the world. He gets the start up and running.
could somebody please explain why this is a thing?
and why did they lose a rider? did he have to pee?
+ross vandenberg idk XD
It's called a dead pull, basically the guy who drops off is meant to ride at full speed just before the finish as only the first 3 to cross the line are required.
The time of each team is taken when the 3rd rider's back wheel crosses the finish, which is why the riders bunch up at the end. Because only 3 riders are needed to finish, but 4 are needed to start, usually the rider that is the most exhausted is the one which peels off. Also, the rider at the front has more work to do because he's facing the most air resistance as his teammates draft behind him (which is why they take turns in front).
the time is for the third man over the line, the weakest rider will drop out
