Team GB's Mo Farah adds the 5000m gold medal to his 10,000m gold in the Olympic Stadium at the London 2012 Olympic Games (11 August).
Ethiopia's Dejen Gebremeskel won the silver medal in the event with Kenya's Thomas Pkemei Longosiwa taking bronze.
Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

I was in the stadium with my late father watching this. We had seats up in the second tier looking down on the 100 m start line. The atmosphere was electric. RIP Dad. He always loved the 5000 and 10000 m events.

anaerobic respiration is the release of a relatively small amount of energy in cells by the breakdown of food substances in the absence of oxygen, it has nothing to do with being stored and 5k athletes would be using aerobic respiration. The reason the athletes who are at the top have such good br is due to their fitness as most would be classed as in a term called bradycardia. Also that they have been training at high altitude which mo farah does the barometric pressure causes them to develop more red blood cells which are needed to supply the muscles with oxygen during races.

@@amblincork child, he was 38 and had serious injury he tried to run through, he has come to the end of his track and field career, just tried to give it a last go, he can still jog a 60 half marathon so hes kept his fitness, hows yours

I can’t express how difficult it is to run at this pace, then finish the last lap like that. Even after years of training, it’s unbelievably hard to do. Mo is truly incredible, so finely tuned

Do you guys ever think it's funny that the people who come last are only about 8 seconds slower than mo farah haha and they are some of the best in the world and yet 8 seconds makes all that difference.
Well, most of these guys are also a lot faster at their best. This was a tactical race, so guys like Farah, Gebremeskel, and Koech have run like 35 seconds faster

As a African myself its still always crazy to see how incredible African runners at long distance. Some of these runners come from rural parts of their countries where they don't have electricity and running water let alone expensive training facilities like some of these other athletes might have access to. Absolutely incredible.
As somali man studying in Istanbul a great city indeed, I would say nothing beats rural and nomad live. In the other parts of the world people are obese and stressed to much. Simplicity is a somali thing.
Some needs to have good training facility, but some are trained by nature.

TheRisenSoldier im in highschool and we do 68 400 pace for 400 repeats (x12). 71 is actually very slow. these guys should be 65 per lap at the slowest. they were just going slow because everyone was afraid to make a move.

i did a sports relief 3 mile run around my school in march which was 16 laps but it only took like a third of a lap for me to start running then stop
not to brag dude but the fastest leg of my race in a 5k is the last mile and i kick it hard like mo farah in the last 800 meters. i actually light up and beam with smile the faster i go.
My personal best for the 400m was 55 seconds and they ran faster than that after running 4600m. Insane how talented these men are.

+Nia Noel the key is to not give up, at first your legs will hurt because u are not used to it. keep it up, everyone's been there at some point. try walking 500 meters, jog 500 meters... and try increasing the amount of meters you run and reducing the amount you walk. is all about getting trough the part where your legs hurt. If i may suggest, try cycling as well, it will fortify your legs and knees as well...

Firstly, with a retrospective commentary i.e without any of the passion of a live commentary. And secondly, a version without any commentary at all - just general audio from inside the stadium. If you can find them on You Tube then, well done. If you would like to watch someones output from a mobile phone in the stadium, then I know this is available on YT. Here, a director is contractually obliged to broadcast as much of the action from the stadium as possible. The fact that another event was in progress at the same time as the 5000 metres is not unusual due to the packed schedule of track and field events held in the stadium. If you do find the entire 5000m final on You Tube, without interruptions from the High Jump, let me know - and I'll guarantee it'll be in 240p with advertising every 2 minutes. So, take your pick.

Ultra confident, and ready for anything the opposition throw at you. Delivering on the biggest stage of all... the Olympics. Farah is a legend. So too Linford Christie and Colin Jackson.

@@iMangeshSN i startet with 40 minutes for 5km too. 2 month later i was on 28 minutes for 5km. And i was not evem trying to improve so no special training just running for cardio and resting 2-3 days between the runs. You will improve on your own just keep doing it.

Xisean Anthony Mo Farah is the distance king. He has done all events 1500m and up, and has done exceptional in all of them throughout his professional career. Look at any other athlete's personal record, and compare their's with his, and I guarantee you there's no way you either passed him by tenth's of seconds, you stood close to him but never caught him.
He can literally do them all. He could've won the 1500m in the olympics if he actually wanted to.

He has the world record the 5K, but I wouldn't bet my money on someone who hasn't ran a dream mile yet. Mo Farah can beat him in the 1500, mile, 800, 3200, 10k, and he finished at 2:08 his first marathon. You bring to me one man with a record and good time. I have nothing against Mo Farsh, but to say he's the best distance runner off all time when Kenenisa Bekele has just as much or probably more credentials then him is hilairous. Like I said earlier Mo is the best right Now, but not the best of all time Yet.
My wife and I were also there positioned behind the closing straight. Our voices were hoarse from shouting "GO MO". An amazing experience to be there to witness this memorable performance from Sir Mo!

what a buzz imagine hearing the roar of the crowd leading into the home straight
500m out Mo tells his training partner to hold his line to block. Gallen can' t manage to do it so Mo has to go it alone. He wants to dominate the inside kerb, no one can pass him. The last 400m he is challenged by them all, he kicks ands speeds up 4 or 5 times. He breaks them down one by one and kicks one last time 50m out. He broke their hearts and will, the others ran as teams and had plans in place to nullify Mo.
This was one of the greatest distance performances of all time. Home olympics, pressure, duress and stress, remember also that he had just won the 10k!
A excellent performance, the last lap of 52sec and then 5 secs to recover at the end and breathe normally again!!! Brilliant and beautiful in equal measure, a true masterpiece👏👏👏👏

That last lap and 200 meters was the most intense 600 meters in any race I’ve seen. The difference you see in the runners before they start the last lap (16:25) to when you are going into the last lap (16:31) is insane.

The slow pace at the beginning really played into Mo's hands. Someone needed to really challenge early to stretch him out. He's so explosive on the last lap that he's nearly impossible to beat in this situation. Nevertheless, awesome run!
