    Breakdown for those who don't understand:
    Basically for the first lap they just try to ride slowly and scare the opponent, then after the first lap, one of them can sprint whenever they like, the reason they don't sprint straight away is to conserve energy. Occasionally they will try to trick the opponent by doing sudden movements or flinching to make them think that they are attacking. After one of them attacks, the other rider must chase them and its a sprint to the finish line. Hope that helped.

    They are riding slow because they don't want to be the leader. This is the Olympic's , so any small advantage is considered the difference between gold and silver. The leader is in the bad position. Even though this is a sprint the leader is actually taking most of the wind impact from being first. By being seconds behind the leader the leader can take most of the wind and the second rider will have a lot easier time riding. Close near the end the guy in the second position will attempt to out pedal the leader after he already took all force from going high speeds. In theory the second rider will have more energy to out pedal the leader.

      It's extremely easy, they do two or three laps (it depends on the track's lenght) and the first across the finish line win. What they do at the beginning it's just tactic or as they call "surplace", it's not a rule you have to surprise the opponent.

    The situation at the beginning is that the two are actually fighting over who starts second. With such a small burst, aerodynamics is necessary to win, so usually the winner is the person who started behind and drafted off the leader. They're going slow to try and bait each other into accidentally sliding into the lead position

    someone explain to me wtf goes on at the beginning

    • @joshk9328
      @joshk9328 10 ปีที่แล้ว +289

      Essentially the desired starting position is the rear, the strange behavior you see during the beginning is the leader trying to get the follower to become the leader. The rules indicate that you may not roll the bike backwards, therefore the front rider will sometimes stop their bike and do a "track stand" attempting to get the person in the back to slip up and end up, up front. Hope this helps, I am terrible at explaining things haha.

    • @DSlite11
      @DSlite11 10 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    • @joshk9328
      @joshk9328 10 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      DSlite11 I am not 100% on this, but I believe that the race starts with the whistle, but it doesn't really get going until a predetermined distance into the race.

    • @joshk9328
      @joshk9328 10 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      DSlite11 or in more simple terms, for example, let's say the race length is 500 meters, the first few hundred meters are used for tactical positioning, whereas the last couple hundred are where the Sprint kicks in. I think that's a somewhat accurate explanation.

    • @tkindred335
      @tkindred335 10 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      When you ride behind something, a cyclist, car, or whatever, it is easier to accelerate and pick up speed because you loose so much in wind resistance when biking. The person in front can almost pull you. You can reserve energy until at the very end when you explode with all you've got and sling shot past the lead rider. That is my take on it. Could be wrong.

  • @_dnk
    @_dnk 8 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    The reason they go slow is because being the leader isn't always good, if you are in front than that means you will take a lot of wind resistance so the person in second wants to get behind them and draft and slingshot by out pedaling the person in front.

    • @martyshwaartz971
      @martyshwaartz971 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      So basically they each want to sprint as little as possible, and just wait for the other to go first? It make sense too because usually one wants to draft and the other wants to try and stay in front??

    I haven’t seen an other comment mentioning it..but there is no coasting on these bikes. If you’re moving...so are the pedals, at all times. Which I think helps add to the explanation of what goes on in the beginning.

    They are riding slow cuz whoever leads the way acts as a windbreaker, means he is taking most of the wind force which takes up a lot of energy while the second guy can just ride behind the leader (which doesn't not takes up a lot of energy as the first is taking all the wind force) and can easily outrun him when he's tired

    This is what happens when you turn slipstream on in GTA lmao

  • @zayber38
    @zayber38 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    For people still wondering what's going on:
    From what I understand, the rear cyclist wants to follow close behind to take advantage of the slipstream that the leading cyclist creates. Then he gauges when the best time is to sprint for the finish. The leading cyclist wants to go slow enough to minimize the rear cyclists aerodynamic advantage until he feels that he can lose him by sprinting. You see them watching each other trying to predict what their opponent will do next. There's a lot of strategy and decision making processes that I don't understand, but I think that's the basic gist.

    @vikramra7 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Time doesn't play a factor in this game. It doesn't matter if the riders take 10sec or 10min to finish the race. Objective is be ahead of the opponent at the finish line. So the first few meters, they just amble along, trying to be behind the other person and at the last moment, sprint to the finish. Guy behind has the advantage as he can draft along without using engery, no wind resistance you see... but the Leader is watching behind his shoulders and tactically sprints or blocks the guy behind n reaches the finish line.

    question: if one guy is in front and they come to the part of the race that he knows the second guy is going to try to go around him...why doesnt the guy up front quickly veer to the same direction, thus slowing his opponent down, and veer back to carry on with the race? this only applies if they are both going at pretty much their max rate and the second guy is riding very close wherein his next move is obvious (otherwise he loses). does this make sense?

      if you are in between the black bottom line, and the red line just above it, you can't move out the lane with someone next to you. Usually causes crashes.

    Does the wind resistance make that much of a difference here?

    • @frazebean5117
      @frazebean5117 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it does. In fact, these guys reach speeds of up to 40 mph. Wind resistance makes a big role, especially considering that the smallest milliseconds make a difference

  • @roshansrinivas8729

    I understood how this works and it bothers me. They are starting slow because it is not possible to maintain the energy levels till the end. The riders will burn out. So, if it is called a "sprint", why not make the circuit shorter? I mean the point of a sprint race is to see who can accelerate the quickest and be the fastest from the start to finish. It can be clearly seen that in this sprint race no one can maintain their energy levels for that long. Shorten the race!
    People do 100m foot race because 100 meters is accepted as the standard in which humans can push themselves to the max consistently throughout till the end.

    • @MrSchuetzendorf
      @MrSchuetzendorf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The race consits of two parts: In the first part, they drive slow to get into second position. In the second part, they try to outrun their opponent. If the track was shorter, there wouldn't be a first part.

    • @nateboness9801
      @nateboness9801 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      it's not about energy levels. Just the fact the people behind them will get an advantage. They have something like the 100m and its called a flying 200
