3-years after replacing the original rear shock absorbers on the MK7.5 to Koni Actives I have had no issues with suspension at all. My cabin noise issue has been resolved by soundproofing all 4 wheel arches, the wheel-well and under the rear seat. Also I insulated under the parcel shelf. In addition I fitted this www.vwgolfmk7pr... Personally I believe this is worth fitting as the cabin resonance when transitioning from a smooth surface to a coarse surface has been reduced. This combined with the sound insulation has transformed my car into a much quieter and more comfortable drive.
In 2018 I was considering selling the car due to noise issues, but not now as its a pleasure to drive.

After my GTI was written off by a white van man in Portugal in April 2018 I am now on a 2018 GTI MK7.5 as a replacement. Would you believe it, after one week of use I could detect the shock absorber tapping noise. Replaced this time with Koni Actives and problem solved. The Bilsteins would have been just as good but thought I would give the Konis a try. Amazing that since at least 2014 VW could not produce a shock absorber that did not rattle! Much preferred the original MK7 as this 7.5 has a lot of resonance and cabin noise from the rear, despite a change of tires to Goodyear Eagles.

Now 18 months later and no more rattles. If you have the rattle and VW keep telling you there is no problem then just fit 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲: 𝗕𝗟𝗦𝟭𝟵-𝟮𝟯𝟬𝟱𝟱𝟵 and you will be happy again.

𝟮𝟱/𝟬𝟳/𝟭𝟱: Latest News on the MK7 shock absorbers. VW shipping further revised shock absorbers to the UK for select few owners to evaluate. If you have a problem, contact your dealer and refer him to Mr B Kattenberg at the VW Executive Office at Milton Keynes.
𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟱: Latest VW Golf GTI MK7 recording of the suspension noise that VW have admitted they can not cure - unbelievable. Paid £30K to listen to this racket. OK, no problem at speed but what about when we drive slowly as we have to do at times, especially in towns and cities where many roads are in a poor state.
What an admittance that they cannot cure the noise. Well they obviously recognised there was a noise issue as they supposedly re-designed the shock absorber. Well, in my case they didn't do a very good job. VW, you cannot cure the noise, what you mean is that you don't want to cure the noise.
Take a listen and see what you think.

OK, so here is another video relating to the Golf MK7 rear shock absorber noise. If you have the sound of logs rolling around in your boot, then look no further than one of the simplest components on a vehicle - the humble shock absorber.
It looks like the shaft goes through a rubber or nylon bush in the barrel that fails to absorb any lateral movement of the shaft.
My car is GTI MK7 2014 version. I paid a huge amount of money to have a 7-month period of total dissatisfaction due to a noise so bad that I do not want passengers, as it becomes embarrassing when they ask how old the car is and how much did I pay for it.
If you have a noise from your rear suspension and your dealer tells you a change of shock absorber to a revised version will do the trick then let him do it - once! If it doesn't work then don't let them change them again. I know because they have changed mine 3 times in 7-months including twice in the past 4-weeks.
If you have a Golf MK7 and do not have this issue then you are a very lucky person but you may just have the problem and thought it was a characteristic of the car. Its not a characteristic, its a failed component.
What do VW want to about my problem. Well they suggest a change to another car fitted with DCC (that car does not have the same problem) but what will the financial implication be for me. Will I get the same spec car but with DCC, I doubt it. Perhaps I could get a refund but then what do I do about another car.
22/06/2015 - VW now claim that the rear shock absorber noise that has been and still is a problem is now called a "Characteristic of the model" or a "residual noise". In other words they haven't a clue how to fix the noise or do not want to.

I am now on a 2018 Mk7.5 GTI and I could detect a knocking from the rear shock absorbers. Changed these out for Koni Actives's and problem sorted. Mk7.5 in my view is a much noisier car than the original MK7. I have a 6-speed DSG box and the shift points are different to older Mk7. Often frequent manual changes are required as the system lets the revs drop too low before a down-change in "D" mode.
