  • In addition to an all-new design inside and out, the 2024 Porsche Macan (no, it’s technically not called Macan EV) loses its gas engine in favor of an all-electric powertrain. In this first drive video, Edmunds’ Brian Wong gets behind the wheel to find out if it maintains the fun, sporty spirit of its gas-powered predecessor.

The electric Macan improves on the gas models in pretty much every way. Porsche isn't just offering a Macan with a new powertrain; it has produced a better Macan with more performance and an interior with fewer compromises. Which vehicle are you excited to see get the EV treatment next? Let us know in the comments below.

Great job Brian. You bought the Macan to live (both versions). Clearly Porsche has done a superlative job in creating it. Love it that is “has spirit,” for while I love my EV now, and while it is super competent, it is far from being either inspiring or exciting - and why a Macan turbo is excitedly going to be our next lease.

I have been a loyal Porsche owner and driver since purchasing my first 911 C2 in 1995. However, with Porsche's decision to transition to an all-electric lineup, I find myself reluctantly considering a move to another luxury brand that continues to offer gas-powered engines. I believe that going fully electric is a significant misstep for Porsche. A hybrid approach would be a more balanced and practical strategy, and I hope Porsche will reconsider this direction.

Leasing a base Macan 4 isn't a bad deal. Similar performance to a Macan S and even the price is pretty close. Aside from the weight gain, it is quite nice and a 95KWH usable battery pack should deliver a real world 275+ miles of highway range at 70-75mph which is excellent.
Still the price is too high. I'd rather have a the Ioniq 5 N for this price. Offers a lot of tech/performance/convenience in this car minus the air suspension, and luxury materials/feel. On the other hand it is way more fun to drive and arguably looks more cool.

Very few when I'm on road trips. The tech and infrastructure is still too immature for EV to be a practical choice here. This is why I say journalists are out of touch with the reality the whole world lives in, as opposed to the privileged few. They try to appease the manufacturers to stay in their good books, but that does an actual consumer a disservice.

@@dash-ryan Fair enough... Although my wife just came back from visiting her mother in the Surrey/Vancouver area and she said the number of Teslas reminded her of when we lived in San Diego.

@@TennesseeFanatic1 Yes, Vancouver for sure because they like to copy the California lifestyle and have a similar government that promotes green living. You'll see quite a few in Toronto and Montreal. The major population centers. However, the rest of Canada is sparely populated and massive in geography. You'll see a far different story in Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, or the far north like the Yukon or North West Territories. In those northern regions, an EV would be a total fail, if you're not laughed out of the town first. Just saw an article that Canadians have reduced their buying of EVs in the past year, mainly because the reality of owning one is not as straight-forward as the media would like us to believe. Add to that, India, Africa, parts of eastern Europe, Russia and MIddle East, with a large and poor population, the infrastructure to support EV's is decades behind. Electricity is a luxury in many places, yet access to fossil fuel is in abundance. I've spent years researching this because I'm a technical person. It probably has something to do with the fact that gasoline contains 47MJ/kg of energy compared to a measly 0.3MJ/kg in a battery pack. So, something revolutionary has to occur with EV tech for the world to adopt it as the primary mode of transportation. Not to dissimilar to the accessibility and capability that smartphones had on the world. So, I'd love to own an EV, but in the world I live, it's simply not a practical choice and, quite frankly, I'm quite tired of EV owners looking down on the rest of us because of it, especially from the rich who think they are doing the world some good. So I bought a Red Mist Metallic C8 Corvette Stingray Convertible and rev the engine when I pass our local Tesla dealership. Needless to say, I always get noticed. 😄
