By this tests' standards, Red Tails being the winner is natural, But there's a bit of a catch here. In actuality, Metal Sonic is the fastest character in the game in terms of Top Speed. Red Tails is only faster in terms of Acceleration from a Stand-Still. I'm a SA2 speedrunner and I've put in a ton of hours into researching how the 2P Mode characters operate for specific categories; and thanks to debug mods, we can see the approximate horizontal speed values for each character. Red Tails' Top Running Speed clocks in at '6.99' by the game's speed values, but Metal Sonic has a Top Running Speed that clocks in at '8.88'; It just takes a little bit for him to reach that. Best place to see this is on an endless straightaway (such as the Sonic/Shadow 2 arena). Red Tails is quick on the draw, but Metal Sonic moves so fast the camera has to zoom out just to keep him onscreen with the rival boss. Also Fun Fact: If you were to take abilities into consideration abilities, Metal Sonic's Black Shield can get him to clock in at speeds in the 19's in certain places- almost 3 times as fast as Red Tail's top ground speed.
Commenting to hopefully boost this a bit for visibility, dude knows his stuff for sure. Just comes with the territory of "fast" being a pretty ambiguous term.
Yeah I wanted to come up with a more fun challenge rather then just compare the speed values. Im hoping this is interesting enough that we can come up with other challenges with different rules/obstacles which will make for different results and show off how the characters change under different situations

The real fastest character is Big the Cat. You see him in most cutscenes, but if you blink, then you miss him. It was almost like he wasn't there to begin with.
Makes sense that Mechless Eggman is able to outrun Sonic. You could never catch up to him at the end of Sonic 2 when he's running for his giant Eggman mech lol.

I wonder if that's what Sonic's like, he has no idea what to do if he actually catches Eggman, so all he does it keep pace and breaks the mechs.
Same, I used to think it was Rouge or Shadow. I think the reason why some characters feels faster than they actually are in the Chao Garden is because of how small and limited the space is.
A part 2 with their abilities and stuff like tails flying, glides, homing attacks, punches and more would be honestly very interesting. Just a gauntlet of movement options to see which is the slowest and which is the fastest

Great Video! It would be interesting to see the difference if acceleration wasn't part of the equation. Sonic and Shadow both have a very slow acceleration in this game. But a strong top speed. It would probably take mods to make this possible since I can't think of a fair way to do this in the base game
Even just seeing who can reach the end goal the quickest with use of their abilities would be interesting. Sonic spam dashing has to be faster than Legman.
Actually interestingly Super sonic characters are not faster, they're actually quite slow. You just dont notice it because you only play them in one small arena. I should have included the supers in this video, I also should have used a longer runway to let low acceleration characters have a chance. Maybe ill remake this video one day.

This was actually all expected tbh. As a teen, I used to test this various ways, because tikal always felt faster than sonic, as did mechless Eggman, and that never sat right with me lmao.
so fun fact that i just found out by doing my own research in game, turns out Sonic IS faster than Tikal in terms of top speed- not by much. but Tikal's acceleration is MUCH faster. the same thing goes for Knuckles and rouge- though they are even slower than Tikal is in terms of top speed, if you were to take Knuckles or Rouge and put them next to sonic, and make them both run forward at the exact same time, they WOULD take the lead for a moment, but just like Tikal, would eventually get left behind. I also tried testing Metal Sonic and the Chao walker against each other and they were surprisingly VERY close. I put both characters on Meteor herd since it was much larger than metal harbor. placing them side by side i really thought that Chao Walker was going to win due to his high base speed AND his very fast acceleration, but after a while of moving forward in a straight line Metal sonic gets a very sudden and VERY noticeable burst of speed out of nowhere and just zooms right past. this is the speed tier list that **I** made, based on the actual top character speeds. and not counting acceleration. Keep in mind i used the Physics swap mod instead of using the actual characters themselves. i dont believe that should cause any problems and everything SHOULD be accurate, then again i'm not positive. these are just my findings so take them with a grain of salt. First you'll want to make sure you have the Physics swap mod in your SA Mod Manager, You'll be going into the 2 player battle mode and selecting the treasure hunting game mode where Knuckles, Rouge, Tikal, And Chaos are available. which means thats you'll want to use the physics swap mod to change their physics to whatever characters you'll want to compare. make sure you turn the in game timer off in the stage select menu so that you have all the time you need to test however many times you want. Pick Meteor Herd, and on the left of your spawn you'll find one of the little floating computer thingies that gives you hints. I used that area to place both characters directly next to one another. in front of the floating computer there is a large stretch of flat land to have the characters run across. all you need to do then is just line up your characters cameras in a straight line and have them both run forward across the stretch of land at the same time, dont pay attention to whoever hits the wall on the other side of the map first, instead pay attention to whoever is falling behind and from their screen, see if they ever start catching up to whoever is in front. If they do? then that should mean their top speed is higher. i know it would probably be easier to just check the characters actual speed values but i couldnt find them anywhere on the internet, so this is what i ended up doing and it was surprisingly really fun and interesting! there may be better ways to gauge speed in game but this is just how i found myself doing it.

I feel like Sonic has gotten slower too. The modern boost games make you "feel" faster with good cinematics and boost mechanics, but it definitely feels slower compared to adventure games
@@EpicDuskk Unleashed Sonic was pretty fast, but I think they did slow him down in later games so they wouldn't need to make the levels so big. Adventure 1 Sonic might have been the fastest with that op spindash. I think Heroes Sonic had the fastest normal running speed.

@@EpicDuskkEh, not sure that's a good metric. Sonic Unleashed is literally called "Sonic World Adventure" in Japan and it doesn't have a chao garden. Likewise chaos existed on some of the GBA games and they're definitely not adventure titles.
Definitely yes on a no-abilites-barred test. It will require much more troubleshooting for maxing a character's speed efficiency, but sounds like the fun of it.
Yeah the plan is to do more tests under different conditions. I wanted to try to find a way to make it more fun then "look at these numbers on a spreadsheet" Id like to maybe make it like those smash brothers "who can beat the X jump" style videos. Maybe come up with some other challenges for these guys
Id say so. Metal sonic actually does have a higher base speed then red tails, but slow acceleration. This video is sort of a test to see if this type of content is fun, I want to do more experiments maybe on different levels or using different rules.
Not hating just being scientific, Tikal got stopped early, the rest of the characters stopped in between the 2 walls at the end of the runway, Tikal stops before. Was noticeable because Tikal didn’t grab the ring. Fun little video

what is utterly bizarre about mechless tails when I experimented with him is that he is faster going up the stairs in the chao lobby than on flat road, his acceleration and speed values are just odd.
I'm actually surprised that you didn't give Black Mech Eggman a time trial in this since like Red Mech Tails he is also a multiplayer exclusive with the main in-game difference being the lack of a homing missile weapon / lock-on system like everyone else.

Commenting while Amy's up: I haven't tested the mechs, so I'm not sure where they rank, but I know that if the mechs are excluded the fastest characters, in order, are Metal Sonic, Mechless Eggman, Sonic/Shadow, and Tikal. This is only in terms of top speed, disregarding acceleration - I wouldn't be surprised if Metal Sonic didn't rank as high due to his slow acceleration or if Tikal ranked higher due to her fast acceleration.
nope, he's actually technically the fastest in the game. This test didnt give him enough time to reach top speed though, his acceleration is a bit slow. But if we put him on an open field where he can run forever, like the final shadow/sonic fight, he can go even faster then red tails.
@@EpicDuskk And this is just on a flat surface. He is *unmatched* on downward slopes because Black Shield turns off friction, so he can build momentum even past his already-high top running speed.

I do enjoy the pre-boost era sonic games like Heros, 06, etc. But imo only Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are "adventure style" games.
@@EpicDuskkEh, not sure that's a good metric. Sonic Unleashed is literally called "Sonic World Adventure" in Japan and it doesn't have a chao garden. Likewise chaos existed on some of the GBA games and they're definitely not adventure titles.
Definitely yes on a no-abilites-barred test. It will require much more troubleshooting for maxing a character's speed efficiency, but sounds like the fun of it.
Yeah the plan is to do more tests under different conditions. I wanted to try to find a way to make it more fun then "look at these numbers on a spreadsheet"
Id like to maybe make it like those smash brothers "who can beat the X jump" style videos. Maybe come up with some other challenges for these guys

Id say so. Metal sonic actually does have a higher base speed then red tails, but slow acceleration. This video is sort of a test to see if this type of content is fun, I want to do more experiments maybe on different levels or using different rules.

It always frustrated me, that sonic cannot reach TopSpeed by himself, unless he’s running downhill as he can tell when his hands are not behind his back

what is utterly bizarre about mechless tails when I experimented with him is that he is faster going up the stairs in the chao lobby than on flat road, his acceleration and speed values are just odd.
Everyone is fast up stairs actually. If you use mods to put them in city escape you can see it more clearly on the staircase before the 3rd checkpoint

Whenever I play as mechless Tails, I use the physics swap mod to give him the same physics as Sonic because Tails's speed is just abysmal 🤣
I've been using Tikal in the choa garden for pretty much the same reason you use Rouge and that's how I found out how fast she is

I'm actually surprised that you didn't give Black Mech Eggman a time trial in this since like Red Mech Tails he is also a multiplayer exclusive with the main in-game difference being the lack of a homing missile weapon / lock-on system like everyone else.
Im like 99% sure his speed isnt affected, but probably should have double checked. Its why I didnt do the other alt outfits

I always thought as a kid metal sonic was the fastest when you go downhill and hold his shield, but then I remember my friend having red tails. and he wouldn't tell me how he got it 🤣 and told me I had to beat following the president with crazy time at exactly a certain number of minutes and seconds I was tricked.. good times 🧐
Commenting while Amy's up: I haven't tested the mechs, so I'm not sure where they rank, but I know that if the mechs are excluded the fastest characters, in order, are Metal Sonic, Mechless Eggman, Sonic/Shadow, and Tikal. This is only in terms of top speed, disregarding acceleration - I wouldn't be surprised if Metal Sonic didn't rank as high due to his slow acceleration or if Tikal ranked higher due to her fast acceleration.

nope, he's actually technically the fastest in the game. This test didnt give him enough time to reach top speed though, his acceleration is a bit slow. But if we put him on an open field where he can run forever, like the final shadow/sonic fight, he can go even faster then red tails.

@@EpicDuskk And this is just on a flat surface. He is *unmatched* on downward slopes because Black Shield turns off friction, so he can build momentum even past his already-high top running speed.

Try meteor heard for your next speed video because the mechs for some reason have a faster run speed in that stage and cosmic wall along with weapons bed
