My son (13) volunteered his time last week to umpire a little league game. We’re a small town. Only two teams so we do the best we can with what we have. Long story short some of the parents were chirping about balls and strikes…admittedly he had a couple bad calls. As I’m coaching 3rd I hear some snide remarks and explained to them that if they didn’t like the next time they are more than welcome to come ump the next game. People always want to complain but never want to do the job

My daughter was playing little league softball. The other team had to forfiet due to a lack of players, and since it wasn't an official game, the umpire had to leave. A couple dads and I decided we'd be happy to take turns calling balls and strikes, so the girls could at least scrimmage. I was behind the plate, and make a couple calls, and hear, "Oh c'MON! What are you doing?" I turn around and point at the guy and say, "You're turn to be behind the plate." The other dads on the field backed me up, and the dude sheepishly came out (he had some pride to save, it seems). It was glorious. He couldn't call balls/strikes to save his ass.

Your son's experience is typical...unfortunately. Parents and fans are going to ruin their own sport when young people don't start calling games; building their skills and experience, It's the only way to learn the job, but if parents and fans give the kids a hard time, they'll say F- it. I don't need this grief.
........so what will they do without officials?

My 16 year old daughter just finished her first year of umpiring girls 10U softball and I would go to her games as her “bodyguard”. One coach was complaining about every call that didn’t go his way all game and it was getting worse as the game went on. I’m watching and biting my lip and wondering when I should step in while still allowing the coach to be a coach. By the last inning he took it too far and he started yelling at her so I stepped in and introduced myself as her father and reminded the guy that it was 10 U softball and not game 7 of the World Series and that he was most likely the only person who cares about the final score. He kept his mouth closed the rest of the game and his assistant coach tried to tell me he was yelling at the other teams coach and not my daughter

Frank Last They “lost” in a forfeit. No umpire would allow a game to continue when his or her safety is compromised by a bush league action like that. And if that league wants umpires, then they would be required to take action against that coach, since he clearly instructed the pitcher and catcher to do that. It’s no different than if the coach had punched an umpire. The face mask saves umpires from cranial fractures, but you feel it when you get hit like that, and usually that happens due to a foul ball that happens too quickly for the catcher to react.
It’s because of actions like this that leagues are having trouble finding officials to work their games. This wouldn’t be tolerated by NCAA or professional leagues. You think it should happen here?

In the UK, with kids sports, soccer, cricket, etc, there's a code of conduct that the parents who attend the matches have to sign up to; not to abuse the referees and umpires, not to use foul language, or belittle the players, or shout at or remonstrate with the staff. They must be supportive of the players and everyone taking part. If you break those rules, the organising authority (Local football association or local sports league) will ban you as a parent from attending anymore games. Another point that in my opinion highlights the professionalism of the umpire behind the plate is the fact that after getting hit, he took off his mask and walked away.
Clearly, after being heckled all game, the ump was furious that this team really went so low as to intentionally hit him with a pitch. Rather than make a scene he walked it off.
Good on the ump. Good officiating crew here. Perhaps not every call in the game was the correct call, but ladies and gentlemen that is the nature of the fucking game. Human error. If you don't like it stay away from sports. This team should enjoy a suspension from whatever league they play in and the coach should be banned from coaching in that league.

Rj Bertram He did very calmly walk away from the plate. He went over to the coach and told him that he cost his team the game. The “dropped glove” was deliberate, and the game ended in a forfeit. At the very end, you can see the batting team walk off the field, and the base umpire moving toward the mound.
Umpires at this level are not going to allow themselves to be deliberately hurt. And this league will have to get tough with this kind of behavior, if they want umpires for their games.

Well said. I've been an umpire for 27 years and started at the bottom of youth baseball (now I do high school/JUCO only) and those are three great pieces of advice. The one thing I will add:
Set expectations! When you have your plate meeting with the coaches let them know what you expect. I always tell the coaches that we won't be arguing any balls/strikes or judgement calls. If they have a question about why a judgement call was made then come discuss it with me between innings. If it's a rules question, then by all means call a timeout and lets discuss it at that time. Otherwise, there will be no 'arguing' and that is their one and only warning. You say it in a very respectful way, let them know you are open to discussion but that you have set the parameters. By setting those expectations, coaches know what is acceptable when I'm umpiring a game. Finally, I let them know that they, as coaches, are responsible for their fan behavior. That usually limits any issues from fans (I don't pay any attention to fans during the game so it would have to be something pretty outlandish for me to notice anyway).
I always try to be invisible, but that's almost never completely possible. So, by setting those expectations up front you save yourself a lot of issues down the line.

A bad call, no. poorly calling a game against your team, why not? Yes filing an appeal is the correct course of action but the reality is the game will be over by that point and at best the umpire will be suspended. Most likely nothing would happen to the umpire and it's not like they will get to play the game over again.
Call it bad sportsmanship if you want, others would call it standing up for your self. When so many calls are against your team, the umpire has negated the purpose of playing. He might as well say the other team wins so we can all go home.

Beyond the bad calls if any player outwordly disagreed with what he said he confronted them and made things escalate to the point where they were discussing "talking" "after the game". It got so bad from both teams that were disgusted with this ump that one person discussed doing this. Since i was catching im the one thats gotta miss so i looked that guy right in the eye and told him that i was not going to possibly hurt this guy over a freaking softball game. You work around his zone. While he is wearing a protective facemask, that doesn't make it hurt any worse and a pitch at that speed can actually kill a person if it hits right! (It happened right after a mound visit) he then walked over and told Both the pitcher and catcher they were done. He waited 15 mins quietly with and ice bag on his jaw from where the ball hit him and play resumed. Coach was expelled from the league and the pitcher and catcher got 3 games suspended and had each write a letter of apology to the ump. Sometimes a statement has to be made to the umpire when he is calling a poor game. I have been a catcher for over 30 years (Little League, High School, College, and now Town Team) and I have let a couple of dozen balls or so go by over the years to let the ump get tagged. I have never been thrown out either. I also wouldn't allow a high pitch toward the umpire's head to go by, that is just plain dangerous and when I do let a pitch go by neither my coach nor my pitcher know I am going to do it. I set up outside and when the pitch goes inside I am "slow" to stab at it. I have had a few umps make remarks over the years but I just shrug my shoulders and tell them they know what the deal is. The catcher looked like she "yanked" or "pulled" the pitch up...which makes it look like a strike in the video, but honestly it didn't look that low. But maybe the umpire had been warning her all game to stop yanking the pitches...you keep doing that to me after I tell you to knock it off, I'm calling it a ball.
See, when you yank a pitch you tell everyone in the ballpark "Well, that pitch was a ball, but let me see if I can fool the umpire." Hey, if you think it's a ball, I'm going to agree with you ! "Ball!"
First, I wouldn't have left them out there yapping on the mound that long. When there's a conference, I dust off the plate slowly, peek back, if they are still there I start the slow walk to the mound. That sends the message, and usually they break it up.
Clearly the coach told the pitcher to throw at the umpire, and told the catcher to bail out. There's no other interpretation for what happened next.
But look at how long the kids were at the mound after the coach left. I'll bet they were talking about whether to do it or not -- but you know pyscho coaches go for those mind games - the kids were probably afraid to disobey.
Plate umpire should have immediately dumped the pitcher, catcher, and the coach, at a minimum. His partner did the right thing too.
The manager should be banned for life from coaching. I'd recommend at least a 1-game suspension for the pitcher and the catcher, but frankly I'd be wanting more than that, maybe even up to a season ban. Come back next year when you're had time to think about what you just did.
I've never seen this happen personally, but it's despicable on so many levels.
