    Back in the late 2000s early ‘10s, before the “BBCOR” era of metal bats a lot of companies were making some dangerous bats. Easton, Nike, and Demarini were constantly pushing the envelope back then. Exit velocity was through the roof for kids and some bats were so ridiculously loaded there were on the banned list within a year. I had an old 2 piece composite bat made by Nike that sent anything it touched into orbit. One game we played a team using an illegal bat. Rather than call them out, we pulled the Nike out of the bag and went to work. 7 hits in a row topped off by a grand slam. I put the bat back in my bag right after that 😂

      Yeah dude me 2, I had a really old bat even from before the besr. standard. And it was basically just a steel rod, a few weeks ago i used it in a game because all our BBCOR bats were gone. First pitch was a grand slam in the trees, but the umpire overturned it because the bat was obviously illegal. It was called the Louisville Slugger Air Attack

    I was the umpire on the dish on this game. The game was in Lake Havasu, AZ and I was out of Las Vegas.
    Per our rule in our State, the head coach is supposed to be ejected (NIAA) rule, bat removed and yes, the batter should have been called out, but I believe my decision was based upon game management circumstances (e.g. time limit goes off at end of video.) Thanks =]

    To anybody that is wondering why the bat is illegalI believe that it has too great of a drop. The drop is how many ounces the bat weighs less than the lengthFor exampleIf your bat is 30 inches long and the bat weighs 21 ounces, then the bat is a drop nine bat30-21 = 9 Many leagues have a maximum drop of 12So if this batter was using a 33 inch bat that weighed less than 21 ounces, it would most likely be illegal. It looked to be a 2 1/4 inch barrel and it was clearly not a problem with aluminum versus wood. They would not have been able to identify corking on the field.

    • @Vistal11

    • @patrickmcdaniel2048
      @patrickmcdaniel2048 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The rules when I was playing were that you could only use bats with a weight differential of -5. I swung a 32 inch bat so it couldn't weigh less than 27 oz. It was later changed my senior year to -3 so I had to change to a 32 inch/29 oz bat. Any bats outside of the -3 differential were illegal. Bats could also be no thicker than 2 3/4 inches. As far as wood bats go, most of the leagues I played in you could use a wood bat if you wanted to but there were no rules that said wood bats were illegal. College teams do not use wood bats. They use metal bats

    This is why, as an umpire, I ALWAYS checked the bats that are intended on use during game. I make it WELL KNOWN, that I was checking bats. Any bat snuck in after, that is later deemed illegal, will cause the player to be out and possibly ejected (depending on the childs age). If I suspected a coach of purposely doing same, they would automatically be ejected. Harsh, maybe, but when I give you every opportunity to check to see if it is legal, and you try to sneak it in......

We are going on 47 years and life has been good. We had two kids boy and girl. Our son when he five or six started playing tee ball. Each year a different level. When our son was about eight he had a coach that yelled at the kids when they would miss a catch so on and so on. I decided to get involved. I started coaching my sons mustang team. Seven of the boys I had came back and played for me five years in a row. Our son played all through high school and was pretty good. Lol, ball is outside, I loved umpiring, and heard parents talk about strikes, as they watch from the right or left of the plate.. yea, it looks great their, but from behind, you see the FULL PICTURE. Yes, some ump have a horrible shrinking strike zone. I’d tell both coaches that I would widen my strike zone to get the game going, or if no one was actually swinging, because they knew the pitcher didn’t have anything that day. I know this is off topic, and yes.. CUP, BATS, PLAYERS NAMES, ETC were always checked before the game. I never did it any other way.

    You might wanna consider cropping your videos. Why watch 6 minutes of a boring game to show the bat issue? How about a follow up? USSSA rules are pretty clear, the batter should have been out. No challenge from the coach?
    Side bar: Can that pitcher throw ANYTHING but a curveball? This is why people are against travel ball. This kid's arm will be trash before he gets to college.

    • @ShawnMichael121277
      @ShawnMichael121277 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Emily Blackshaw
      Yes they should. When the rules changed, the manufacturers started putting what is referred to as a "thumbprint" on the handle. It's pretty easy to see and verify, being about an inch in size. It simply shows that the bat meets the current recommended bpf. Problem is the pace of the game and the umps get lazy and it just falls through the cracks. But...keep in mind this was right about the time that the rules changed and USSSA cracked down. So...there was a learning curve and you definitely had kids and parents with $300-$400 bats who were hell bent on using them no matter what the rules said.

    Two things:
    1) The bat is illegal because it doesn't have the appropriate labels. This doesn't necessarily mean the bat is loaded; giving the batter an advantage. In fact, these labels change over the years and you could have a bat that was legal years prior, but not legal any more.
    2) The reason that big boy ripped that ball was because the pitcher is keeping ALL his pitches way high.

      Baseball Ballbase That is just a dumb comment. Don't know if THIS bat is illegal or not...but yes...an illegal bat COULD be the difference between hitting home runs or not. I bet you are one of those dumb worhtless fucks that everyone laughs at who says that steroid using players should be in the Hall of Fame because "you still have ht hit the ball" As if extra power doesn't make the difference between a 340 foot fly out and a 375 foot home run. Or even give you extra bat speed to catch up to a 98 MPH fastball.
      The biggest reason to show why your comment is as worthless as your life is..if they didn't help...why would people use illegal bats or take steroids? "Gee...I know this doesn't help me at all...but I like to live dangerous and take the chance of getting thrown out of a game and possibly suspended!"

    For those asking what makes a bat Illegal here a a few of the reasons. In this case they are playing BASEBALL. So using a Softball Bat or a Teeball Bat would be illegal. A bat more than 10 years old is illegal (they have dates on them). A bat that is damaged, has a flattened place or a divet or ding on the barrel is illegal. A rolled or warmed bat is illegal. The Barrel of the Bat is too big. Those are most of the EASY to identify reasons.
    If you want to check your own kids bat look for any of those thing... especially before you buy. Don't buy your kid a Baseball bat for Softball and if it is damaged it shouldn't be used. Make sure the League your kid is in approves the Bat. UTrip might say 1 if OK and Babe Ruth says it isn't. NFHS (High School) may approve it and some other league might not. Usually these leagues have their their name or logo printed on the bat to show they will accept the bat.
    I would be most cautious buying a USED bat check closely for damage and make sure to check the DATE. But even if you buy an illegal bat you can do whatever you want at home or the batting cages (or for self-defense). So the Bat won't be totally useless.
    The rest of the reasons a bat might be illegal are harder to explain (by me) because I don't know why they are banned. I have never asked why I just keep my Check Sheet with all of them shown and listed in my Umpire Bag just in case. Maybe someone else can explain that.

      Something about the bat breaks the rules for how it's supposed to be built. They can be designed different ways so that they're springier and will hit the ball farther.

      Even in youth baseball there are rules. Especially in regards to the bat. The illegal bat he used will help with the hit going further than if he played with a regulation bat.
