    Another tip for folks with aquariums: when you do your water changes, use the water you remove for your plants instead of dumping it down the drain.

      A great tip for fresh water aquarium water. It'll be loaded with fish fertilizer :)

      this is absolutely fine for ornamentals (except if you use medications/ salt in the water). It is an enormous health risk on edible plants - particularly leafy greens.

      @@ak9381 How is it a risk? Please explain with references :)

      @@Lovelygreens a lot of small amateur aquarium owners use medications for ick and algae , which may affect plant growth negatively. Especially copper sulfate. Also, the anaerobic bacteria which can be present in an aquarium is not ideal for land plants, or for that matter people. aerobic bacteria works better with the mycorrhizae. Other than that, the fish 💩, the chlorine- free oxygenated water, and the near neutral pH of aquarium water would be great. Of course salt water aquarium water is a no-no.

      @@brianmorris364 So…since I’d know when I’ve not used any fish medication it sounds like the only scary thing is the anaerobic bacteria?

    I grow in wooden 600 mm x 600 mm x 600 mm, only use compost in the top third of the box, fill the bottom with plant material. When I replant I recycle the bottom of the box, seems to work very well!

    I think you’ve really hit the nail on the head when talking about container growing, this year I’ve watered more consistently but also taken the feeding regime much more seriously and so far everything is going really well , just need the temperature to rise and stay warmer , even here in Cornwall my greenhouse is not reaching 10 deg at night and it’s the middle of June.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really glad that your containers are doing better! That regular feeding makes all the difference 💚 Strangely we've had it much warmer than you up on the Isle of Man thus far. Wind has been an issue though, for outdoors. There's always something!

    I've started to use an extremely weak feed each time I water my containers. Ony a few drops instead of a cap full of fertilizer and it seems to do well as the plants aren't being given a large boost and then nothing for a whole week. Nutrients can indeed wash out.
    The other thing I do is always hydrate in the morning be it containers or beds as it gives the growing medium surface time to dry therefore not inviting slugs and snails to visit during the night.

    Hi, Tanya. I absolutely 💘 your channel, and it's not because we share the same name. This was a great video that is helping think about moving plants in my container garden to a field and putting some of the plants into the ground. After watching, I think raised beds would be the best approach to making this transition. Thanks for the useful advice.

    Hello Tanya Lovely Greens. Im growing first early potatoes in containers and Tomatoes in large plastic pots . Its been very windy and mostly cloudy here in Yorkshire Northern England for weeks now. The Tomato plants are still very small with just a few flowers on them. Also there seems to be a distinct lack of pollinating insects around. I am trying to grow Zinnias ,Lavender, and other flowers to attract bees but alas they arent growing well either. Maybe i dont have green fingers after all . Should i take up Guitar or Painting?😀 hahaha . Bye!!!

    Soilless medium. That's the main thing I took from this video.
    What was hindering me with the feeding part is not wanting commercial fertilizers and the smell of homemade compost teas.
    I am going to have to work on the compost teas part.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Granular might be the way forward for you if you can't tolerate the smell. The scent is much milder and you can get organic products, like the chicken manure pellets I show in the video. I use strictly organic/natural liquid feeds for edible and outdoor plants. Even the purchased stuff can pong a bit but once diluted you don't notice any smell :)

    • @brianmorris364
      @brianmorris364 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Molasses, kelp meal, azomite, Epsom salts, granulated fertilizers, hardwood ashes, etc are dry amendments with little or no smell. Alfalfa meal, insect frass, worm castings, greensand, perlite, biochar, coco coir, peat, etc also are relatively odor free. Vermiculite may or may not contain asbestos and or arsenic. That's 70s gardening material imo.

    Thankyou for your videos, i have a Dwarf peach tree that i need to keep in a pot i got it last year, when i repot it what should i use, i was told succulent mix so it won't get root bound, please advise me what to do.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Potting mix has nothing to do with whether a plant goes root bound or not - its planting in too small of a container that causes that. Also, succulent potting mix is not ideal for fruit trees - it's mainly sand, perlite, and coco coir and has low nutrients. You need a good loam-based potting mix - a multipurpose potting mix would do fine, too.

    Can I use dried banana skin fertilizers in my herbs ?

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When it comes to plant matter, they need to be broken down to effectively release any nutrients back to the soil. You could pulse the dried banana skin into a powder, if you wanted to go through the trouble, and spread it around your plants. Laying them whole would only lead to them rehydrating, generally becoming slimy and smelly, and attracting slugs. What I do with our banana skins is put them into the wormery. The worms love them and transform them (and other scraps) into worm castings and a nutrient-dense liquid feed.

    The magnet on your pipe isn't going to soften the water. I recall some years ago the same thing being sold to put on the fuel pipe in your car to supposedly make your petrol go further. They didn't work either.

    • @brianmorris364
      @brianmorris364 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Magnets are used to gather fine metal particles before they circulate through your engine and cause abrasion and wear. Not to increase gas mileage.

    • @LaReynedEpee
      @LaReynedEpee 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brianmorris364 That's not why such items were being sold however. Claims were made that putting a magnet on the fuel line would improve performance. Bogus.
