  • Happy first day of spring! There's been much progress in the garden with the new polytunnel, and today, I show just how far it's come on. We also sow the first outdoor seeds in the Vegepod, plant the gutter-grown peas I sowed last autumn, and have a look at what's happening and growing in the garden and greenhouse. As usual, Maggie makes her cute and sassy appearance(s)!

    You've made great progress and everything's looking well. I'm curious why you've not staked and secured your newly planted fruit trees as it's the way I've always seen it done Tanya. Take care .

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Trevor, there are two main camps when it comes to staking trees -- those who do, and those who don't. I avoid staking unless it's completely necessary since trees that are unstaked can develop much stronger root systems quickly. Important in a place with windy winters! Trees that need staking are those that can't support their own main leader once planted or are constantly battered by the wind. Even when staked, you should remove the stake within two years, max. The exceptions to this (in my garden) are the columnar trees I've planted in a row at the bottom of the veg patch. They're minarette trees and need strong vertical support for the duration of their lives. Or so I've been told. A photo of one of them growing at the Garden Organic gardens does not have a stake and looks healthy, straight, and happy though!

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's probably for the best Alice 💚 Keeping cats indoors is better for outdoor wildlife. It's difficult to keep cats in if they've been outside before though. Maggie was born outdoors and has demanded (howled!) since she was small to go out. Our two other adopted cats were four and five when we got them. They too had been outdoor cats before.

    It does look a very sturdy frame. I built mine out of scaffold bars driven into the ground and the blue water pipe 48mm diameter for the 'hoops' if I remember correctly and also put timber supports in the frame (not as much as you must need where you are). It is just a tip, but I now keep my doors open in the autumn and winter, especially in high winds to let the wind blow through - there is much less chance of the cover getting ripped off then - I lost my first polythene cover because I did not attach it to the frame as well as securely as I should have - it probably ended up in Yorkshire somewhere (the other side of the Pennines!). The second cover which is still there since early 2014 was put on in combination with a 'mesh' skirt around the lower 3ft of the tunnel to help break the force of the wind as well - I might loose a bit of heat, but not much.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Greenhouses and polytunnels are always a gamble in winter! Good tip for keeping the doors open in winter...especially when stormy/windy weather is forecast.

      Hi Cherry, they're actually no-dig beds, not raised beds. Imagine them as bottomless beds with a simple wooden edging there to keep the compost on top from eroding down the slope. Drainage is the same as in any standard in-ground garden bed :)

    So very lovely..and so very jealous. Question, what frost hardy zone are you? I am 8b, but it appears you are a bit warmer. I'm struggling with knowing which vegetable starts I can maintain in my solar greenhouse in March and beginning of April. Hoping you can help. Thank you for all your guidance. Joan in Sequim.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Joan, if you're going by low temperatures (first/last frost) then we are considered zone 9. Our safe date for the last frost is March 31st though, and our summer temperatures are not hot and tend to be around 60-77F (15-25C). A little Goldilocks zone that's never too cold nor too hot. I've been to Sequim before and think that our climates are very similar. Right now leafy greens can go in the greenhouse but avoid any starts that need warmth 24-7 -- such as tomatoes. Wait on those until night temperatures are warm enough in your greenhouse for them (no colder than 45F/7C at any point). Until then, you can start off lettuce, spinach, leafy herbs, onions, and brassicas such as cabbage.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I try to remove any places where they might hide and dead plant material that they'll eat. Anything sitting or laid on the ground -- barrels, plastic, piles of wood, etc, create habitat for slugs. Some mulch (straw!) encourages them too. In my garden, they'll eventually discover the cozy nook between the wooden edging and the compost in the beds. They won't get too bad though since I keep the garden clear, grass and weeds minimized, and encourage wildlife to come have their fill. Hedgehogs eat slugs as do frogs. Can't wait to get a wildlife pond built at the house for them 💚
