    Let several of these winter greens go to seed in the spring and allow them to spread around your garden. They will become prolific weeds with the advantages that they exclude other weeds and can simply be pulled and eaten.
    Two red mustard plants (over two meters high at harvest) gave me enough seed for kitchen for most of a year and I cook with them twice a week.

      I went on a scavenge for pallets to build a compost zone today and when I found some (B&M store Suffolk, England) they had loads of ruptured bags of compost they were not going to sell… they let me have them (50L bags) for £1 each … only had a tiny hole

    I started some January King cabbages last year and set them out in a raised bed at the appropriate time. They were coming along nicely, and I expected to harvest them in late winter or early spring. But here in Tennessee (USA) we were hit with extraordinarily COLD weather right at Christmas -- down to zero fahrenheit, and wind chill about 10 degrees colder. My wonderful little cabbages did not survive, but after watching your video, I believe I'm going to try them again this year. Thank you for all the encouragement about late gardens!

    The idea of the basket-planting is terrific. I have loads of them, so that is what I shall do. Yours is (for me) the best garden channel. Your plants look normal, the occasional brown leaves, you also have slugs and all the banes of a gardeners life. You do not pretend your garden is all perfect. This year started rainy, here in North Germany, but now I have a really good harvest - if a little late. I found the fine netting invaluable for all sorts of critters and my carrots do not have any chewed paths by the carrot fly. Of course, for plants that need insects for fertilizing, I removed the net when they started flowering.

    • @dianeroome972
      @dianeroome972 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Braisin-Raisin
      An economical way to obtain fine netting for garden use is to get sheers (curtains) at the thrift store. They are economical, they are large enough to do the job, and you are keeping them out of the land fill. I also use get a sheet, to line pots, to tear up for use as ties in the garden. Trying to reduce use of plastic in my life!

Will try some of these greens too in a planter I plan on cleaning out next week. I also have one planter annually in use with cover crops because they dont die here in winter ( 9b Sacramento,Ca) ; I am able to wait until December to turn them in and by March plant in that planter, the planters rotate, so one I currently have cucumber and butternut squash in will become my next cover crop planter for 2024. Hi Ben, I love your videos and always anticipating the next one. I live in South Carolina and can grow spring, summer and fall. But in the last years it got really tricky to start fall crops in 95 degrees F/ 35 degrees C. I know you in England don’t have that problem but I can imagine that I’m not the only one who is dealing with it and would appreciate some thought in that direction. I’m looking up the germination temperature but I am so lost how often to water. It looks like I should water every day. Thanks for all you do, it’s much appreciated.

      hello from Florida! the biggest difficulty i've had with heat is that if it lasts deep into the fall season it can encourage bolting - particularly on my greens. if its still warm around harvest time, really keep an eye on things and even harvest a bit early, if youre worried about bolting.
      for my fall garden, i often start seeds indoors (like most people do for spring plantings) then transplant outside when the nighttime lows begin to dip down into the high 70s.
      as for water, the amount really depends on the plant and on the amount of rainfall in your area. generally i like to run my irrigation early in the morning, just after sunrise, and if it doesn't rain during the day, I'll run it a little bit more in the evening. watering in the middle of the day is not super effective at keeping my plants going.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's worth starting things off indoors to avoid the heat. I would water whenever the soil is dry - you can stick finger in about an inch deep to check for soil moisture. If it's dry, water.

    All in cell trays.
    I'll split them 50/50 between the polytunnel & outdoor beds.
    Interesting idea using the trays on staging - might try that but I've only a couple of trays.
    I've some Greyhound cabbage seeds left & it's worth trying them, as I've plenty of fleece & netting to help protect them from birds & cold.

      @@GrowVeg - awww, I wasn’t looking for sympathy, but I’ll take your kindness in. I’ve learned so much from you that I feel I’ve let you down. Silly, eh? Anyway, enjoy your lovely garden and all its bounty.

    Great stuff 👍💚 I actually sowed the same radishes and some mixed salad leaves end of last week. Already seeing germination. I think I’d like to do some mizuna too, (got some with a magazine) might do as you did and sow into trays so they can go where the tommies come out 💚

    Thanks for the helpful tips! You make it look so easy! This is my second year having a little raised bed behind our library. So, I am building my gardening confidence! It's about 4 ft by 4ft, but I can get a good variety out of it. The tomatoes and basil like to take over though! 😄 So, my question is can I grow broccoli outside if I use the hoop cover? I live in Southern Indiana, USA and my zone is 6a. Winter is usually about ten degrees, but it was a very harsh winter last year with the wind chill as low as -30! Thanks for your help!

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it may be just a touch too cold to be growing broccoli over the winter, certainly outside, but in a hoop house you may well get away with it - the sprouting broccoli anyhow.

    Hi, Ben! North Florida Zone 8 is in many ways like yours, and in many ways not so much. I've got all of my seeds for Fall, but the weather has been so hot here (Upper 90's and 101 yesterday and possibly again today) that I can't even sow indoors in my laundry room!! Hopefully, it will cool down enough to get my plants started. It's also been impossible for me to get outside to work the garden. It's just not healthy for a 70 year old lady. Nevertheless, I'll be out there as soon as the weather cools a little. My goal this year is to plant a year's worth of English peas and snow peas, broccoli and cauliflower. Anything else I plant that survives the winter will be considered a fresh-eating bonus!

    One of the problems of Brisbane Australia is that it is way too hot to garden except in the early mornings so things become a little neglected.

    I only have a smallish balcony space, but do have a racked planter (metal framed with fabric planting troughs), and I just realised I could make a clear plastic hood to fit over it, so could try out some of these winter plantings.
    The only difficulty is I fear I don't get quite enough sunlight for successful vegetable growing (it's east/south-east facing, and there's an overhang above it - meaning I also have to water, no matter how rainy it is). I do have land cress and radish seed, though, so may as well give it a go!
    Thanks for the inspiration.

    Hello! Fantastic video as usual and echoing everyone else here i have no idea of why you haven't been picked up to replace all these gardening hosts that waffle on. Concise and hugely helpful as always!! May i ask, what soil/mix do you use when germinating/potting as i have very little success with what most of the internet tells me and seems impossible to keep the soil from drying out! Many thanks

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thank you for your kind words. I just use an all-purpose/multipurpose potting soil/mix, which I sieve to give a finer texture for smaller seeds.

    • @dianeladico1769

      Some things do better after a frost, many greens, for example and they can be harvested leaf by leaf so they're 'ready' as soon as the leaf is big enough to eat. You don't need fruit to ripen. YMMV but where I am US Z6 we get a frost mid-Oct and then it's warm enough for cool season greens through Thanksgiving at least. So I get them started now in trays, pot up to small pots and once the first frost knocks out the heat lovers I plunk these in their place.
