Mini Urban Altoids EDC Tin (v1.0) by TheUrbanPrepper

    There are times when carrying a full size Altoids Tin is not conducive, especially with front pants pocket carrying. The Urban Altoids "Mini" EDC Tin uses an Altoids Smalls container and can fit conveniently in the small watch pocket of jeans. The items contained in this tin are primarily intended for urban EDC purposes, however several of the items could be used in a emergency/survival situation. In an effort to keep all of the items secure and organized while in the tin, miniature magnets have been retrofitted on the tin and some individual items using Gorilla Glue as an adhesive. This would be an extremely poor kit to carry in the Amazon jungle, but highly beneficial to have at work, home, out of town travel and during errands in an urban environment.

    I happened to have an empty Altoids smalls tin so I decided to have it in hand while I watched this video to give me a better idea of scale. I'm dumbfounded - it's crazy how much you got in there! Hats off to you sir!

    I always learn something new from your videos. They are well thought out and are based in the reality of how they will be used. I appreciate the effort and thought that you put into all of your kits, bags, tools, everything. Keep up the good work and I'll keep watching and learning. Trading info is what this community is all about. Thanks again. Peace.

    Watching this, two thoughts came to my mind that can improve the kit slightly:
    First off and this might or might not work, can you stuff the matches into the whistle??? They are both meant for survival situations only and you will probably never used them urbanly, so they make sense to go together to save space (again I am not sure if it is possible to stuff them inside.
    Second and I truly see potential in this, I suggest that before wrapping the tape round the paperclip,you pull the lose end 90 degrees, then wrap, then retuck the loose end of the paperclip, the idea is that you can use the paperclip as a "pointy" tool (eg to push reset buttons) without having to remove the tape

    Very well done. Thanks for taking the time to put up such an informative video jam packed with great ideas and common sense strategies for micro storage. And for taking the time to offer the PDF file to go with. A lot of times we watch good vids, but then forget a lot of what we saw. The PDF is a nice touch. Great for the professional who cannot wear Cargo pants or carry around a BOB at all times. As other posters said, the magnets were also a great touch that I wouldn't have used for fear of wiping a magnetic data strip of micro drive. But since you work on computers, I'll take your word for that.

      ***** Thank you so much for the kind words, Wade. I’m really happy to hear that you enjoyed the items discussed in this video. The PDF takes a fair amount of time to create, so it’s always nice to hear when people appreciate it. I like to think that it helps viewers focus on the video itself without trying to remember everything. The magnets have worked great for me thus far. Just don’t try to store your 1.44 MB floppy disk inside of one. :)

    Absolutely amazing, pulling out all that stuff from the tiny tin looks like it's a real Bag of Holding. The incredibly small USB cord and MicroSD adapter are just wonderful, I just have to find those. Mine are tiny, but those are just nano-sized. A razorblade would probably be smaller than the Spyderco blade though. Something like a Victorinox Signature Lite would replace several of those, as it has a blade, a tiny pen, scissors, a nailfile, a flat-head screwdriver, and a flashlight.
    There's two tiny things that I would really miss myself: a rubber band and a plastic bag. I became a rubber band fanatic just couple of years ago, wrapping everything with them, especially after finding an good brand. Unfortunately, I can't find more of them anymore, but luckily they seem to be more time-enduring than other rubber bands. I just love them. For plastic bags, I first used biodegradable bags, as they are very thin, but more recently I've used freezer bags, as they are also thin and perhaps more durable. I mostly use them for gathering office leftovers; hey, I'm an office dumpster diver, I often get week's food from leftovers. It's just crazy and ecomically/ecologically irresponsible how much perfectly good leftover food is thrown away as garbage at offices. They would also very effectively replace condoms for the survival purpose of carrying water. Oh, people would really think you're perv if you stuffed office leftovers into condoms, even if they were nonlubricated.

    • @TheUrbanPrepper
      @TheUrbanPrepper  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marko Grönroos I’m glad you enjoyed this video! Yeah, the USB micro cord and MicroSD adapter come in handy almost daily. I’ve been enjoying the Spyderco Bug as a razor blade replacement. It may just be the cool factor though. I tried including a rubber band and a zip tie in this tin, but I got tired of them always falling out whenever open. They will both be included in the full size version. Good tip on the plastic bag. It could also be beneficial for dog walkers who need to use it for an emergency pooper scooper.

    I have watched a number of your videos, and enjoyed them all, and I am now a subscriber. You have done some great research into small prepper items. I have gotten some great ideas from your vids. Thx. One word to those who have expressed concern over the price of some of your suggestions, I have found that most of the time, you get what you pay for. And when it comes to items that might be required to actually save your life, or at the very least, items that must work when you need them, with no chance of finding an alternative at the time they are needed, quality is the ONLY thing that matters. While it is not so important with EDC items, it could be very important with SHTF items. The last thing you want to happen, is for something that is required to save your life to fail the first time you use it. The contents of my fullsize Altoids life kit cost over $350. My roadside emergency kit in the trunk of my car cost over $1500. There are times with going cheap makes sense. IMHO, shopping for personal safety needs is not one of those times. Thanks for all the great research!

    I would try a SAK classic instead of the tweezers, bug knife and tooth picks. It has all that rolled into one as well as a nail file, flat head screw driver and scissors. Not 100% sure it would fit but I would think it would. Also you could get the alox version so it's slimmer and then just throw in a loose pair of SAK tweezers.

    Some ideas I got while watching your video:
    1. Instead of magnets you could use patafix: is lighter, takes less space, no magnetic fields and eventually you can assemble all the bits together and use it for other purposes
    2. Have a look at the victorinox items for the toothpick, glasses screwdriver and tweezers as with those you can save even more space
    3. Along with the glasses cleaning cloth you could also carry some glasses cleaning solution stored inside one of those small perfume sample spray bottles

    • @TheUrbanPrepper
      @TheUrbanPrepper  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      lovecraft22 Thanks for the tip on the patafix. It looks very similar to the QuakeHold Museum Putty. I’ll look into it. I have looked at the Victorinox/SAK, but I feel that the dedicated tools (e.g., tweezers, mini screwdriver) perform better. The toothpick should definitely be added though! Nice tip on the glasses cleaning solution. I don’t often use that but I probably should.

    I’ve watched about a dozen of these “Altoids tin” survival kit videos. It’s funny how many versions all include some of the same things.
    Not sure I’d rely on a “mini kit” that small for survival. The regular sized tin isn’t that much bigger, but big enough for better supplies. I think for my survival needs, a “bulge” in my pocket would be the least of my concerns.

    I know you like that whistle because I saw you review it a long while back and then I bought it to try it out. However, both that I have had on my keychain have broken (the inside piece that allows it to whistle) rendering them useless. Guess I'm hard on gear...

    • @TheUrbanPrepper
      @TheUrbanPrepper  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      AL Genaro Wow! I have around 4 of these whistles and none of them have had that happen over the past few years of owning/using/testing them. I have heard of that happening with others. Did it just happen out of the blue or were you conducting some sort of stress test? The Fox40 whistle is my favorite whistle and would not run into that problem. It just doesn't have the micro size to fit well in these type of tins.

    • @The_Bearded_Lady
      @The_Bearded_Lady 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheUrbanPrepper I kept mine on my keychain (which is rather large because of the multiple sets of keys I have to carry)... it just happened in the course of wearing my keys (I wear mine on the outside or my pants at the hip and my friends always know when I'm coming lol). I'll check out the Fox40. I like that it is pea-less. Thanks. I've also had some luck with those SOL slim howlers. But it would be nice to find something smaller for a tin kit.

      +UK Prepper 17 in it One thing to keep in mind with Urban Tins is that you have to adapt them to your uses. You got a "Everyday" item in there you don't use? (SD card adapter or whatever else) Replace it for something you often need. Depending on your habits and the rest of your EDC, you might or might not need a cutter or a mini-multitool, etc.

    I'm working on my Altoid Mini kit right now and I'd really like to put in some nail clippers. The only ones that I've been able to fit are the standard 99 cent ones but they eat up a lot real estate! Any suggestions on ones that would fit? I'm half tempted to take my True Utility clippers (the old style) and cutting off end but then they won't lock closed.

    This is great! I really enjoyed the video feel free to direct message me if you want to talk about gear. I was just wondering if you continue to carry a normal size Altoids tin with the mini tin. If not were do you store them

      Maffett Ham For the past several weeks I have been trying to go with the Altoids Smalls container in my watch pocket. I am currently working on an updated full size Altoids Tin, but I usually prefer to store it in my shirt/jacket pockets to avoid the dreaded prepper bulge.

    pretty cool, lol. by chance do you have any OCD tendencies? Not judging, just asking. A person could certainly have worse problems than ultra organization.
    Ok, so now I will take another look at little containers....for instance, old 35mm film containers.....and those little plastic boxes for soap....I also have some plastic jars with screw on lids.
    Thanks for the ideas.

    I think It would have been better if you used the classic sd (Swiss army knife) in place of the Spyderco bug because it's a lot straighter than it and has scissors, a knife, file and a flat head screwdriver so alot more versatile and possibly smaller.

  • @WhirledHistory

    Some nice ideas (I especially like the micro-SD/USB key), but you might want to add/reconsider some things. The emergency contact info is nice, but that would probably be best on top of the kit. Consider listing some of your personal emergency info on the back (e.g. emergency contact number for your wife, your blood type, any medical allergies, etc.). I'd drop the two matches for a ferro rod and striker since they can be used far more often. If folks want a cheaper option to that knife, you might want to consider a simple scalpel blade (thinner, cheaper, and just as effective). You also previously mentioned that you always keep a hat on hand, so you might want to consider just laminating that photo and sewing it into the inside top of the hat. Finally, I'd ditch the toothpick; it just seems like a silly afterthought. If you have a knife, you can make a toothpick out of just about anything anyway.

      @TheUrbanPrepper  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      milprepper I omit some of the more personal information from the videos (e.g., blood type) for privacy reasons. I prefer using matches or a BIC lighter for EDC purposes and a ferro rod for survival purposes. The GUM Soft Picks certainly weren't an afterthought. I use them often while commuting and would not want to carve one out while in transit. Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • @adventureswithfrodo2721
    @adventureswithfrodo2721 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should do one for the COMMON man. I like your ideas but some or most are costly. Just watched someone else youtube video and he showed all his knife kits, why so many I do not know, but each one cost close to 500$. This kit is great but the cost would be close to 50 to 60$. But I'll go get a min tin and do something. THANKS for all your time in making your videos.

    • @TheUrbanPrepper
      @TheUrbanPrepper  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tim Barton Good comment. It seems that the smaller the item, the more expensive it becomes. Especially if it is a quality unique item dedicated for a special purpose. You could most likely replicate this tin by replacing the Spyderco with a razor blade knife, the tweezers for the SAK replacement, the USB drive for a smaller size verbatim, the Nanolite with a Thumblite, and the titanium whistle for a stainless steel equivalent. I feel that most of my kits could be leveraged for the layout alone and a person can interchange the specific parts for cheaper alternatives without sacrificing functionality. I have a Budget BOB video coming out soon which you may enjoy better.

    7:05 You should have mentioned that the magnet strips on credit cards can be altered by the magnets meaning it will stop to work. But if your card also has a microchip the chip will still work.

    excellent concept! I really like it. But I find it cost prohibitive. I priced out all the items, and broke it down to per unit cost and came in it at @ $92.39 (and that is by unit price!) so If i calculated the cost of the whole roll of tape, all the Kevlar thread, the whole bottle of aspirin, Imodium etc... id probably be at 150.00-200.00 dollars :(

      Stuart Johnson I can look into doing an IT EDC video. Never really thought about that. I try to do the same approach I use for my day job in computer science with my prepping projects. At work this is attributed to being detailed oriented. In prepping it's OCD. Go figure. ;)
