Little thought about engraving your plaque. Get some self adhesive vinyl and stick it on the plaque, then cut through the vinyl with the laser. Then etched the metal with chemical or abrasive blasting. Finally remove vinyl and Etched brass plate.
Yes, I second that concept. Experiment with various paints that the laser can vaporize cleanly so the acid can get to the underlying metal. Some tinkering will determine the process, and there is a lot of info available for 'photo resist etching' used in printed circuits....
It's a great tool for creating your own merchandise, with only the outlay for materials, and you can use up all the offcuts from projects on the boats. It also allows you to decorate new parts for the boats, imagine custom labels in brass for the helm.
That thing is just crazy cool. Certainly anything you can dream up in wood it can create. Brass, however, it just slighting beyond it's ability.
Nice work Peter! Those coasters look pretty sweet!
Brilliant machine Peter. You can have a lot of fun with that.
Oh my gosh yes, I have so many ideas!
I have been waiting for this, pretty cool little unit.
Funny thing, when you were cutting out the house I was thinking to myself, didn't Peter design custom houses. Can you just imagine if you had it when you were still doing that, making a perfect cut out scale model of the home you are about to build for you client. I mean I'm impressed right now, if you presented that design to me with a model, well, over the top.
I can see many uses for you in the future. That coaster is bang on.
As a fellow I know would say
Love it, Love it, Love it.
Gosh, you are so right. Between drone photography, spherical photography and now quick and easy model production, I sometimes wish i was still designing. Many thanks for your kind and generous thoughts.
Great thoughts and thanks for showing us how it works. Fascinating.
It sure is a heck of a lot of fun!
@@TravelsWithGeordie the 60 w should be able cut some thick stuff...maybe even metal?
Light burn, noted.
Creality makes things easy to assemble.
There is a product called CerMark and TherMark made by CerMark USA. It makes permanent markings on metal with lasers. I used it for years marking all sorts of metals but primarily stainless steel. Cheers!
Heh, I actually deleted a whole segment for the episode where i discussed that technique. For me, I acknowledge that it makes a clear marking, but it's not an engraving, which i find much more pleasing. Thanks for the tip!
Using this tomorrow, got me hyped up to do contour cut design of Lake Athabasca 👍
Neat - that should turn out really well!
@@TravelsWithGeordie Works great, we ran into a snag with cutting tests on transparent acrylic sheets - tricky stuff
If you could design and cut out the shapes to build a model of MV Geordie, I bet people would buy it I know I would.
Yes, yes, yes! Great minds thinks alike. I imagined just such a project when I first received the laser. Woo, fun!
@@TravelsWithGeordie I'm guessing your mind lit up like mine did when I first got my 3D printer. (also Creality)
Peter I use a wifi protector to do pencil drawings on canvas before I paint 🎨 they make things jump out from the canvas in more or less 3D in effect 😊🎉 take care brother that Lazer cutter is really cool 😎
Well Patrick, that's an awesome technique. I know so little about painting - well done!
I'm curious how the work piece is held in place. It seemed like you just chucked it in there, dude.
You know you MUST come up with an assemble-able model of Geordie available only at maybe... Xmas in limited supply?
I've never been that interested in this before, but now I'm pretty curious. Thank you for your thoughts!
Thanks William! Yes, just tossed in. I wondered that as well, but is seems to stay pretty stable. Perhaps long burns would require some improved registration. You read my mind! A model of the boats was one of the first things i thought of when offered the engraver.
Nice machine.
Isn't it though?
Is there a possibility to switch to 40/22w to reduce the kerf/beamspotsize? Thanks!
I do believe there is! And, in fact, it comes with a low bonus low power laser module with a very fine beam.
Hello, can it cut carbon fiber 1mm thickness with epoxy, I mean a classic carbon fiber coating.
I would suspect it could, but I would check with the manufacturer to be sure.
It's looking good... there is your side gig. 😅😅😅😊😊😊😅😅😅 It's begining to look like a "Peter Knowles thoughts on...not a review channel" is brewing. 😊😊😊 I wonder if it would cut leather and etch leather.
Thanks Petter! That's very kind. This machine would easily cut and engrave leather. Hmmmm...
Peter, it wasn’t clear to me how you took the picture that you used to position the image on the wood. Is there a camera in the cover?
Hi Brian - Indeed there is! Perhaps i was moving too quickly with the features. It does require some calibration steps to be effective, but once locked in, it's very helpful.
Is there an option to put the power to a hundred and ten?
Only on the Spinal Tap version!
Whenever you get an idea on how much a set of coasters with your logo and name cost please let me know I would love a set thanks pwter. Sapele mahogany of course
Thanks James! You can be sure that's coming soon.
I want one. I see they are sold out on this model already, darn.
What, really? It may be that they are just not available yet. Keep your eye out.
metal cut with 60 W?
No intention to cut, but the website did claim it would engrave.
@@TravelsWithGeordie I guess one needs a different type of laser for that... and it has nothing to do with the power (20,40,60w)
I think the laser width also comes in to question when choosing diode laser. I think the 60 watt is wasted bc makes a wider cut and thus do not give much more cutting power (depth) than the 40 w.
40 w should have 400 microns/0.4 mm and 60 w have 600 microns/0.6 mm
did i see a mac logo on the laptop ? os ? mahogany coasters in packs of four please ...
No mac laptops here! Heh, only in our pockets. You didn't find the mahogany coasters too dark?
But... But... But... Where's the tung oil for the model house?!?
Heh! Your right, I should have.
