    Binders on the passenger side is how I always did when hauling coils because if I had to pull off on the shoulder to fix something, I wasn’t standing out in the road when re-tightening my binders.

I have put 10k of lumber on the trailer and got way better mileage. But I have not hauled since April very little paying freight.

    Hi Alex. I enjoy the videos, keep up the good work. I am a CDL hot shot; I hauled a 15,500 pound shipping container (it had product inside) from Illinois to South Dakota. I drove at 1800 RPMs, which was about 60/65 mph, on my ram 3500 and my mpg was only 6.8. Those things suck… The fuel, at least you got a good rate

    • @carolinagoldbug983
      @carolinagoldbug983 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For taking advantage of peak torque and keeping the RPMs (and fuel consumption) down.......keep it at about 1600 RPMs. Makes a difference. Between the weight of your trailer, the load, and your truck.....sounds like you were pretty close to GCVW.....so your mileage is probably going to suck no matter what you drove. But the 200-fewer RPMs would have helped.

  • @Combat_Pyro

    You should try to find a load to pick up on the way back to your starting point so that you can get paid to haul there and back if at all possible. Otherwise you're making $19hr after fuel costs. You took a 10hr day to drive up followed by an 8hr rest period, and a 10hr day to drive back, so that's basically a day and a half at least eaten up loading and doing the run. If you were able to pick up something else headed back from nearby you could potentially double your profits.

    • @paulwatson5965

    Tip for ya man- when using straps on metal - place an abrasion resistance pad between your load and strap. Old mud flaps work great. Slit them down to 6”-8” wide strips . That will help save your straps from gettin cut ..

I'm in construction now in WA state and doing quite well, but thinking about doing this to supplement on the weekend, what are your thoughts?

  • @111jacare
    @111jacare 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Silly question: When you get the trailer built, how much extra will it cost you to have 12 container bolsters fitted? This is so you can do a mix of 8', 10', 20' or a single 40' container. By doing that, you would not have to worry about webbings or chains. It would also save you the trouble of getting up on top of the load.
    With your webbings, roll them up, with a rolling motion back towards you, then throw them over straight. By them rolling, they have to stay straight to unroll. We used to do this back in the 1980's, when carting Complete Knocked Down boxes to one of the car makers, and for railway sleepers. The Mermaids would check to ensure that the webbings were flat on the load, and we never had any issues.

    my friend next time: chain the four corners and make sure the loader center it correctly. forget about chaining the center. next time you deliver at homedepot, lowes, walmart, etc. go to their trash and take(ask) for a thick card board box, any card board. make a 6" x 6" square (at least 8) fold it in half ... make yourself a strap guard. buy a pcv pipe long enough for you to reach the top of container. center cut a 3" deep cut on both ends. a 4 ft pcv pole will do it. the pipe is there to help you place the guard on top and if the strap protector flies off...well, its card board and free.

  • @idadho
    @idadho 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The mpg at 60 would be substantially better. Aerodynamic drag increases at the square of speed. Drag is 36% higher at 70 mph than at 60 mph. A 1+ hour difference in 500 miles but can you use that hour saved by wasting gas? Is saving an hour worth $25 to $30 extra in fuel?

  • @FatWallet_Ju

  • @carolinagoldbug983
    @carolinagoldbug983 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The weight, sure......but I reckon the 'sail' with transporting basically a big brick is going to kick your ass with wind resistance. For a 500-mile trip, you could still do it in a day going 60-mph instead of 70-mph. Especially if you're able to knock off a fuel stop from the trip. I like the way you secured it though.

    • @Combat_Pyro
      @Combat_Pyro 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Legally speaking he's not going to be able to drive 1000 miles round trip without a 10hr off-duty period. Although the load is not commercial in weight for CDL state licensing purposes, he's still hauling materials in interstate-commerce, which means that all pertinent FMC laws will apply to this load. He has no sleeper berth, so he needs to stop and use lodging for at least 7hrs in the bed and 3 hours off duty.

    • @carolinagoldbug983
      @carolinagoldbug983 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He’s limited to 11 hrs of driving anyway…..so he wouldn’t be able to put in 1000 miles no matter what. Unless he can somehow average 90-mph in that 11 hrs. Not sure of the relevance of that comment. And you don’t need to use lodging for your 10 hrs. You just have to be logged off-duty for 10 hrs. Most guys here DON’T have sleeper berths. CDL and non-CDL.

I am going to build a air deflector and mount on the front of the trailer soon and see if it will help and I really like how you use chains and straps some guys just use straps and I have seen the cans move back several feet on the trailer NOT SAFE!!!! Someone definitely needs to show him how to throw straps properly, and to use edge protection as well. Don't care if steel has rounded corners or not, use edge protection to protect the straps. Even a slight vibration in the strap can cause damage. He needs to try and throw straps on semi truck flatbed, the deck is already at 5' then you have the load on top of that.

    Containers pull really hard due to the external rib factor there always creating turbulence in wind they pull really hard when you have a normal size semi truck too only you’re moving it with a 30,000 pound truck and trailer not a 12 or 14,000 pound truck you didn’t get very goog MPG but you got a good rate so it was a good load now you know FYI If the container is empty also need to change front and back no straps

    The container has holes at corners to put chains. I’ve never seen chains put in middle. It’s not really strong metal under the pockets. I used to drive forklift and load them.

    I chain each corner and then strap it. I only got $950 for may last container from Fife to Idaho. Rates are improving or you got a better customer. I fueled at Ellensburg also, it was winter. I only got about 7 mpg with my 2015 Ford.

    Did you have the option of winch spools for the straps or do you prefer to just use Ratchets? Good load, coming from a CDL 48' flatbed O/O.

    Where did you find that?! I’ve been working the Seattle/Tacoma area for a week and didn’t see any containers in the board anywhere near that rate! I’m ready to head back to the gulf coast! Those containers are like pulling parasails.

    With a full load. How can you determine if you’ll be overweight or not in your drive axel before leaving the shipper, so you don’t have to wait till you get a scale ticket to know. Thanks

    Hi Alex,
    Just wanted to help You and Others stay out of trouble. Don't need any violations.
    Containers are a Federally regulated load!
    You should search for proper container securement regulations. I was stopped on top of Mammoth Mountain and educated by a very nice CHP officer. He even handed me a DOT pamphlet showing all the different securement methods allowed.
    The forklift pockets you used are not legal tie down points. When I was stopped I had technically tied down like you, pulling outward. Containers must be secured pulling inward from the corner securement points. Weather the top or bottom points. There are many different ways that are legal, if you really want to work yourself to the ground. Most are for loaded cans.
    When the opportunity knocks think about putting frieght inside the can to optimize your $$$$.
    Pass this on to that South Georgia Hot Shot as well. I started watching his channel quite awhile back. Oh and Vbelt as well. He may end up in a situation like this.
    Hope this helps.
