The music industry told Phil he wouldn't make it because he didn't have the looks. Notice the album cover for this song has no words. Just his face. A big middle finger to the Industry.

Phil Collins is a musician who sold over 100 million albums both as a solo artist and as a member of a group. He was a member of the band Genesis.
Only Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney have accomplished this as well.
They were screaming Phil Phil Phil !

To be fair he does have experience playing the bad guy in TV Shows and Movies to hone that glare. Plus I think he channels his inner F-You Andrea when he sings this.

What Donna said. Very few performers are even better live, and not many are as good live as in the studio. Phil Collins is one of the few who continued to improve his music and his performance over the years. This song was great when it came out and it is only better years later. Many people only know him for his songwriting. They don't know that he also plays drums. I love seeing their surprise. Well, Phil doesn't just "also" play drums, he is one of the top-tier drummers, he was THE drummer for one of the most prestigious bands of all time. Work your way backwards over his career, it's a trip worth taking.

There are few performers that can sound better live than in their official videos or recordings, and Phil Collins is one of the few in that elite group. Sorry I missed his last tour, as it looks like he has now stopped touring, due to a health issue. Thanks for the reaction - loved it!

Phil Collins is beyond talented. He started as a drummer for Genesis. When their lead singer (Peter Gabriel) left, Phil took over as lead vocalist. He has had a stellar career as both a member of Genesis & as a solo artist. I will never forget his appearance at LIVE AID -1985. He performed at the London concert first then hopped on The Concorde & flew to Philadelphia to close out the concert over here. It was so damn cool & the audience (both there & watching on TV) erupted into a thunderous applause when he showed up on stage. People always cite QUEEN's performance at LIVE AID but many don't mention this incredible feat that Phil pulled off. This is another deep rabbit hole which actually has two caves to explore - one for his work with Genesis & the other for his solo music. Two of my favorites are "Another Day in Paradise" and "Easy Lover" duet with Phillip Bailey of the R&B supergroup Earth, Wind, & Fire.

This was 2005 or so I believe. Phil is now 71 years old and can no longer play the drums and hasn’t for awhile now. Back issues. Allot of the intensity from this performance coming from Phil is because he was also an actor and is able to show that intensity of emotion in his face.
The guy at the beginning who looks like Gandalf or a wizard, is Leland Sklar, the bass player, and one of the top studio and touring bassists in the world, getting into the vibe. He has spoken about playing this song with this band as being one of the highlights of his 50 year career.

Phil Collins was the drummer and singer for the English rock group 'Genesis during the 70's. I was never a big fan of their music personally. They turned out the type of sound that made you love it or hate it. I don't believe the group was as popular in the U.S. as some would believe. IMO .. it wasn't until Phil's solo career that the "Genesis' spark was rekindled
Phil Collins wrote "In the Air Tonite" about how he was feeling and the amount of anger he had after divorcing his first wife back in 1980 ..
"Well, if you told me you we're drowning"
"I would not lend a hand"
"I've seen your face before my friend"
"But I don't know if you know who I am"
"Well, I was there and I saw what you did"
"I saw it with my own two eyes"
"So you can wipe off that grin"
    "I know where you been"
"Its all been a pack of lies"
It was the lead single coming off his debut solo album "Face Value" in 1981. However, it wasn't until NBC's 1984 television series debut of "Miami Vice", starring Don Johnson as James "Sonny" Crockett and Phillip Michael Thomas as Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, that the song gained even more notoriety and nitching a place for its self in American pop culture. Crockett and Tubbs we're two Metro- Dade detectives working undercover in Miami. The show aired for about 5 or 6 years.
** side note ** ... If you we're growing up in the mid-eighties and remember the "always clean shaven & neatly dressed" uncle, brother .. maybe even Dad .. suddenly loving pastel colored loose fitting dress coats and pants, going sock less {sometimes even shirt less} and 2 or 3 days before shaving again sporting the stubble look .. "Sonny Crockett" was to blame! ... ** 😎
"In the Air Tonite" was the lead song in the series debut "Brother's Keeper" ....
** Fun Fact ** Phil Collins also starred in a couple episodes of "Miami Vice" in season two as a British TV game show personality /conman known as 'Phil the Shill' who just so happens to be associating with a couple coke dealers targeted by Crockett and Tubbs.
Besides building a sizzling solo career of his own, Collins and former 'Genesis' band mates regrouped and churned out a few albums and couple Top 10 hits in the late 80's and early 90's.

Phil is 1 of 3 artists that have sold over 100 million albums both with a band and solo. Paul McCartney number 2. Michael Jackson number 1. So glad I got to see him in concert 2 last times. Still Not Dead Yet solo tour, Denver '19 and with Genesis curtain call, Chicago '21. Highly recommend I Know What I Like from Genesis concert film in '76 or the '93 version in a medley of their older songs. Phil kills it with his tambourine dance. In 2007 they Put on a free concert in Italy to close out their reunion tour. Half a million people showed up. Dive deeper into the concerts of Phil solo and with Genesis. They never disappoint and always sound better in concert.

That was a great concert and video. Watch it. This tune comes IN THE MIDDLE of a 2+ hour concert. Phil is a stud. (he has an interview with Howard Stern....he is cool)

I suggest “I Don’t Care Anymore” the official video … or live. If you want to see his raw emotions. Amazing.

This song was released in 81 I think, but was revived by the TV show Miami vice in the late 80's. It's perfect for cruising around at 2am.

The "alien" sound you hear is a vocorder used by the keyboard player. Another awesome performance by Phil is the live version of "Mama" Live in Knebworth with his former band Genesis. It's. 🔥🔥🔥!

We, that grew-up with the great legends of music, are in shock by the news of the Masters that are stricken-down with diseases that make it impossible for them to perform their crafts. Honor…Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, Phil Collins, Steven Tyler (Aerosmith)…

So much better than the studio version!
Important to know. This song is from Phil’s “angry album”. Going through a nasty divorce after his wife had an affair…In the Air is written to the man she cheated on.
“I Don’t Care Anymore” is his song to his wife…must react to his live performance as well.

Fun fact: the other drummer in the performance is his son who he taught to play drums. Phil is no longer able to play due to his health but his son is still playing :). You must watch the video of him and his son “competing” it out on the drums:)

The alien effect on his vocal is called a vocoder. If you ever watched the old 80s Trasformers cartoons its the same effect that they use to make the voice of the Decepticon Soundwave.

  • @OriginalLictre
    @OriginalLictre ปีที่แล้ว +1

The "Alien Effect" you asked about is the synthesizer-modified voice of the keyboard player. If you check the credits in the details section for that video, the keyboardist is credited.

    • @ICTS22
      @ICTS22 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Correct, but more accurately, the correct term of the effect is called a vocoder. It is the unique effect when a vocal or any other audio input is run through it's system and split apart apart into different frequencies and other audio parameters and then run back through an output signal. It is typically triggered by a synth, midi controller or midi device.

I’ve been to a Phil Collins concert where he of course performed this song and it’s so incredible, but it doesn’t even come close to Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb live at the Pulse Concert 1994. PLEASE do a reaction to that!

I believe it was recorded in 1998 but video released in 1999. In April 2009, Collins had surgery to repair dislocated vertebrae in his upper neck, which occurred while drumming on the 2007 Genesis tour. The operation caused him to lose feeling in his fingers and he could only hold drum sticks if they were taped to his hands. He now uses a wheelchair in public.

He developed back problems and became unable to do the one thing he loved most-play drums.

Because this is such a great depiction of someone who witnessed a terrible crime years ago, "the first time, the last time, we ever met," and the anger meaning "something's in the air tonight"--meaning retribution, along with other hints in the words, I thought it was the perfect theme music for the 80's crime show, Miami Vice. Ever see that? They still run it on cable channels.
