@@Obekanobeeyes but a lot of companies are hesitant to give a reason why you no longer work there. Opens them up for possible lawsuits. They will say if you are or are not eligible for rehire with no detail. I process background checks and this question is commonly “against company policy” to answer.
Yep. Look after number one. Don’t let anyone own you. The main thing is live very far below your means and build an exit door. Until you have money behind you, you’ll always be subject to some employer.
Unrelated but this is why I find the 2 week notice to be nonsense, if they can fire people on a Friday afternoon with no prior notice, then quitting a toxic job on the spot sounds good to me
Few things everyone should remember 1. Be loyal to no company. Keep all your personal stuff to yourself 2. Alwaysss go for what you want because you are valuable 3. Link with a temp agency they get paid when you get hired and they will fight for the pay you want 4. Take none of it personal leave a job if its not for you always have a plan!! 5. You being fired has nothing to do with how awesome you are!!!
This comment should be pinned. I find that people don’t understand how important #1 is. Your coworkers are NOT your friends, and the company is only “loyal” to you as long as they are able to use you. If you and your “friend” are up for the same promotion, that “friend” can use your personal information to sabotage you. It doesn’t matter if you dedicate all your time to the company and you exceed your deliverables - if the company needs to cut, they’ll let you go.
HR is not there to protect the employees. They are there to protect the company. HR, Management, employees are not your friends. I tell my young adult kids that all the time.
Learned this the hard way! I just wouldn’t speak to HR about my job related performance, concerns about my manager, or things you don’t like. It will likely backfire.
I worked at a career in the same organisation for many years and I can remember when it seemed like HR switched from helping employees to being just a tool of management.
Hey, I was fired at 30 from my FIRST job out of grad school. It was my dream job and the entire reason I got my graduate degree. Three months after being on the job, I was fired. When you say the firing process is ruthless, it really is. Nothing prepares you for it! Keep pushing though. At 33 I started the job I'm at now and I'm thriving, own a house, and am in a stable and loving relationship. You've got this!
I got fired from my first job out of college at 23, and it was traumatizing. Like you, I had never been fired. I had always been a good student, and had a good experience working in part-time jobs as a student. I had never felt like such a failure before. It really makes you question yourself like nothing else I've faced in life.
I got fired twice from two different jobs and looking back, it was ridiculous. The second job especially made it like I was the worst person ever, like I was just a cruel and mean person. Luckily, I had the money saved up to take some time and regroup. I think I only recovered once I started working again and saw that, no, I'm not a bad worker.
I'm in the same boat. My last job acted like I was the worst person. I'm still in the regrouping phase. I'm so shaken it's hard to even envision working again. How did you manage to be brave enough, please? @@rosesweetcharlotte
This sort of thing - as well as purposeful sabotage is the reason I tell ppl - DO NOT BEFRIEND COWORKERS. Get the bag, go home. And any tech startup wanting to guilt you into "being a family" is gaslighting the crap out of you
@@mayanevergaf I got so much shit from this 24 year old girl at my current job for this. Being cordial is good, being friendly is good, but trying to be great friends with everyone is such a risk. This girl acted like I was a monster for thinking that. She's 24, has never been fired in her life. She truly doesn't understand how companies work
Companies used to invest in training for their employees. Now they expect you to hit the ground running. I was told for a position there would be training. I had experience in the field( in the job description) however I had not previously worked with the specific software the company utilized. I made that point clear in the interview process. The person who was “training” me had barely anytime to do so. She had to answer phones, put out fires and do her own work. Constant interruptions stressed the both of us out. Corporate America is TOXIC.
Your point about a job not "feeling right" is so important! I started a job about 6 years ago, and on my first day, I felt so out of place, and everything just felt WRONG. I lasted 6 months until I quit before they could fire me (I literally walked out one day and never went back). I went to a corporate recruiter, and she found me a much, much better job in no time. I swear, recruiters are so underrated!
It shouldn’t surprise me anymore, but I’m always confused how organizations with a bunch of money still manage to completely mis-manage their employees. There’s so much waste of money, time, and resources to hire and on-board people, just to manage them poorly and fire them. It’s so senseless. At least it’s an opportunity to learn how *not* to do things. Glad you stayed on this planet!!
@@IshtarNike And it doesn’t help that companies would rather back a poorly trained manager that costs a lot in labor costs due to their contribution in high employee turn over instead of properly training that manager.
I think I figured it out a long time ago, but I still got emotionally affected by stress and bad feedback in the workplace. It's that most jobs are in fact bullshit, especially those that pertain to moving around large sums of money which create jobs for intermediaries, vendors and so on. The original purpose and vision of a company gets derailed fast in the name of profits and keeping the gravy train rolling, most corporations or workplaces wouldn't exist otherwise. Most jobs are meant to keep people off the streets and not organize in tighter communities to get more leverege against government, lawmakers... You really can't do much about a group of people who think alike, except disband them or prevent them from forming in the first place systemically and with slimy psychological tactics.
I once got put on a pip and survived another year, which was odd because i was working my tail off but scared i was about to be let go at any moment. 12 months of thinking i had maybe 2-3 days before i was fired made me start graying.
Your comments on "friends in the workplace" is so very true -- they are called co-workers for a reason! I love many people I work with, but I learned very early that they're a different type of relationship -- never share anything you wouldn't share openly or in public, never believe someone cares more about YOUR success than their own, and always remember they will "love" the next person just as much as they love you! ❤️
@@nyb_ok pip stands for performance improvement plan ... It is usually for 30-90 days. It list standards and goals you must meet within that time frame to keep your job. One's progress is noted (good or bad). If the bad outweighs the good by the end of 30-90 days, that evidence (documentation) is used to support firing you. The reality is, they are already wanting to fire you anyway but in some States that could be illegal without documentation (or evidence.)....Thus the need for a Performance Improvement Plan (pip).
@@nyb_ok The plan says you have to do XYZ. When next review come they can show you didn't succeed at X, Y, or Z or all of them. Documenting that you didn't meet target, didn't improve and they can let you go.
@@gabyrig I joined a South Korean company in June and I got fired in August. South korean work environment is crazy, they will make you work 24/7. I worked without taking a single day leave while I was there. It got me a bit slow in the end and I ended up postponding a task they assigned to me. I delivered it a bit late, I was two hours late and they fired me. I was doing well, even they appreciated my work but this one thing plus a few other small mistakes got me into trouble. (Small mistakes like I didn't know how they wanted the meeting notes to be, later they told me how to do it and the next day I did it right and they liked it too)
Hey everyone! Clarifying that the performance review came about 10-11 months after i got hired. In this video i said 8 months! Also this role was very entry level so they didn't care that i didn't have the skill set from the get-go
This makes absolutely no sense then. What really gets me as her telling you that you were improving and then telling you something different and getting ready to fire you
I’ve been on a PIP once in my life at a pretty big tech company. At the end of the 30 days, my manager said I improved my performance and the PIP ended. I put in my two weeks the same day. And that same manager was laid off a few months later. Glad I got out of there.
Sometimes, we have to go through a rough time in order to get to what is meant for us. Finding our purpose is painful but I think you found yours. Continued blessings
excellent video....was laid off from sales development position with a software company after 1 year 8 months with them...... what I learned or was reminded of...... 1. budget like an entrepreneur, in other words, never live paycheck to paycheck but live from your savings and your savings should cover as many months or years as possible 2. live moderately as a lifestyle for the sake of saving more and mentally dealing with economic blows better 3. always promote your passion daily and make it a business 4. never forget that God is real and He wants us to love Him and trust in Him....not in money or people
GOD I relate so hard. Something about seeing that my work email password was changed hours before my shift started (the shift I got laid off) killed me for some reason. like of course they were planning this and there had to be discussions around it prior to it happening but that made me so sad. The visualization of them sitting in their office or on their lunch break to casually discuss letting me go after working for them, next to them, for almost 5 years. It was devastating! Still is.
I’ve been fired so many times in my life that it kind of messed with my self-confidence. Right now I have a stable job but I still have a rabid fear of screwing up and whenever I do screw up, I would be so extremely hard on myself. I still have an extreme fear of getting fired, and I think it’s because of my past work history.
Im going through this now. Its destroyed my self esteem and made me deeply bitter. Its a shame bc i really loved web developing but after being abused and fired unfairly, as well as having my paycheck stolen and being sabotaged by jealous, insecure coworkers, i left that industry. I havent coded anything in four years.
Do not feel bad you didn't deserve to be fired, the position was not a good fit and you clearly communicated. Honestly, working for any corporation is risky, the business focuses on the business success not the employees. So, working for yourself is the best. I'm happy you are brave enough to share your story and that you are doing better after such a toxic depressing experience.
As an HR professional I can tell you the decision was made when you were placed on the PIP. The PIP is given to protect the company. I love your self awareness ❤️
@tizitapusch9780 performance improvement plan. Given by a supervisor or manager and they give goals in you need to reach usually within a month. Sound good for the employee, but that usual how they fired employees say look we had to put them on a pip, they were not performing.
I was let go from a job I worked at for over a year back in July. The place was so toxic and out of control that I was actually happy to be free from that place. I saw the writing on the wall for months and all the stupid terminations that were happening since January so I braced myself early. I went from giving 110% overworking myself and losing weight each week from stress to realizing what was happening to me physically and emotionally and putting my health first by doing what I was told and not going overboard. The moment I put my health first and not killing myself over a job was when they got rid of me and I have no regrets. Yeah I’m nervous about working again because of that experience.
Don't let employers wear you down... it's a tactic they do to discourage you from taking a better job. I had the worst employers before I got a great job at a famous non-profit... but even a co-worker tried to fire me from there and they had a sexual harassment episode happen at that place... no one I know got rehired after COVID-19. They cut everyone and reshuffled people. The woman who tried to get me fired got promoted to manager. Ugh... that's how it works in this world.
This is how most of my jobs have gone, except I quit when I couldn’t take it no more. It made no sense for me to go above and beyond when no one else did. The lesson is to set boundaries and enforce them. It’s ok to go above and beyond every once in a while like agreeing to cover a shift, staying a little later, etc, but don’t offer to do these things, and never do them if it’s known that your work place will take advantage of you if you agree to do more once. They will mark your name and call you every time they need a shift covered, etc.
Can totally feel ya… I got fired during a Corporate buy out. I had been at my Management position for 12 years . I got a job right away BUT that was my 1st mistake. I didn’t take time for me . I went from job to job and honestly am still embarrassed, humiliated, you name it I’m it. Please know that this video has helped me. I haven’t talked about the termination therefore I haven’t dealt with it 🙄 Dumb me ! I have no idea how you came upon my screen but someone wanted me to meet you 👍🏿 New Subscriber here 😊
Thank you so much for your vulnerability. Everything that you said I was nodding my head. I have been there a time or two. I never came across a black woman online who was so authentic about their true life experiences. You are helping so many women and saving lives.
Yeah, this matches my understanding of PIPs. It’s labeled as an improvement plan, but often it’s just creating a paper trail to HR can fire you. PIPs in tech especially can be ruthless :/ I hate also seeing my coworkers get fired. One day we’re coworkers, and the next day I’ll never see them again. I get why it happens, but it’s so bizarre to not have the chance to say goodbye to someone unless I find their contact info.
I love these videos they remind me of old TH-cam when people came on to blow off a bit of steam, it's so real. people can relate to this and when it happens to you it feels like the end of the world and you're the only person who has ever felt that awful... but in reality, it has happened to every adult who hasn't got extremely lucky with who they know or who likes them.
That company was already planning to quit your position, they may put you on a PIP (performance improvement plan) as a way to back themselves legally. Goes to show that we should never totally place confidence on a company (nor the so-called coworker “friends”), after-all in the world of business the company comes first and an employee is an replaceable asset. Always put yourself first and know your power.
I lost my job as a manager for a warehouse two months ago due to budget cuts. My manager who had to break the news was avoiding me and my building as much as possible because he couldn't handle seeing me and knowing what was going to happen. It wasn't his idea, it came from corporate and he reassured me over and it ver that it wasn't due to my performance at all but because I was the manager with the least amount of tenure. I went through the same ideations... still kind of going through them. Its amazing that I came across your videos at this point in my life and I get to hear from someone in the same headspace as me.❤️
Am currently in this position and I have decided to quit a week ago. Asked to change my manager cause he was a bully and racist to me. They changed me but it got worse and kept picking on my small mistakes and was put on a performance review and was the worst experience. They took advantage of me, no training given and lord am jobless now but not in that pain anymore.
After getting my masters I really thought my job would make it easier getting a raise, but they made it difficult, and I left. I'm in a position where no one wants to hire me despite years of experience. It's pretty annoying but I'm still here still hoping. You did what you could do at that job. You and I both know they failed listening to you... I have a video explaining and what happened to me. I cant wait to watch your growth. best of luck.
Congrats on that achievement! It takes a lot of discipline to obtain a degree. I almost feel like now with the success of so many bw achieving these milestones, the goal post is being pushed further away. Idk , I am trying to remain positive but it really makes you question everything
I am so tired of industries and companies behaving like this. First they don’t want to hire because you don’t have enough experience/education; and now because you have too much experience?! I would have reported their ass to the Department of Labor!
Yes sometimes unfortunately experienced doesn’t really matter 😢 they want different perspectives a new fresh one, so they would hire someone with different backgrounds, or the higher we go the harder it is to get a job.
I don’t understand how there is always stories in the news about labor shortages, how people are not enrolling in College etc. And this companies are not hiring. It just confusing to me , there’s is always people telling me go back to school to improve your chances but there are people with master degrees not getting hired .
Thanks for sharing. In my past jobs I’ve noticed they don’t set their workers up for success they just threw new hires into the deep end and then criticized them because they couldn’t swim. I wonder if this is why so many companies have high turnover rates. I think investing in the longevity of their employees would likely help to solve that.
I've heard the Performance Review Plans are just a way to document your tasks so that it's easy to train your replacement, not a genuine effort to prove yourself.
The people in the comment section are great AND it is good to share all these stories with one another... This girl has hit pay dirt with this channel!! Good open forum and right idea at the right time...
I really appreciate you for coming out with this publicly. So many people go through this silently and feel stuck with no one to even talk to . May you be blessed with lots of positivity, success , love and the job of your dreams always . I very much agree that sometimes jobs don’t feel right . The moment I sense that I try to walk out. Because nothing good ever comes out of it if we stick in there and keep trying to please the boss who ends up firing us anyway !! So the moment it doesn’t feel right it is a red flag.
The second time this happened to me, I refused to go on the PIP, got an employment lawyer and came away with 5 months full pay. I wasn't about to get played again!!! Much love
A friend of mine did something similar. He had a very incompetent manager, and this manager decided to put him on a PIP. Luckily for him, he was disabled and older (over 50), so he pulled “the lawyer card” - he told the company that he’s not signing it without a labor attorney reviewing it, and he’s been documenting the incompetent manager’s inconsistent directions that set him up for failure, so he’s also going to talk to the labor attorney about it. He also mentioned that he felt he was targeted because he was an older, disabled worker. That scared the 💩 out of them, so they did a deal where they laid him off and gave him a 6-month severance pay PLUS paid for his COBRA for 6 months.
My role is probably kind of similar, and what you said about losing connection really struck me. At my previous job, (same industry, different company), a woman was fired. Our manager told a woman who had been very close to her “Don’t communicate, she wants answers and you don’t have any.” I was floored. I really hope that woman didn’t take that advice. I just couldn’t believe that there was leadership talking like that, telling people not to maintain a professional connection!
That Performance Review with 30 days was just them trying to fire you correctly. If they were serious about keeping you, they would have given you 90 days to improve. That is the norm in other jurisdictions/ countries. They already knew they were going to fire you. There was no way you would improve in 30 days.
💯 I survived a performance monitoring and was given 8 weeks to improve. And even then, they didn’t expect me to fix everything but just show I was getting back on track. 30 days is insane.
Transparency is so important on here. Ppl are looking for something to relate to. You did a great job with your delivery from start to finish. The layout of the pictures and the build up was so great. Keep it up
This is very similar to my situation. I thought I found my dream job, but after 3 months I started to question if I really wanted to be there in that role. Got put on a PIP, so I tried to stay on top of everything but 28 days later they fired me with no explanation. My red flag was the manager requesting a meeting after we hand spoke all day, & yup soon as I saw her boss + his boss I knew. It’s frustrating but thank you for sharing your methods for dealing with this. I agree the biggest takeaway is if it doesn’t feel right, it’s not.
I worked for maybe 16 years (20ish to late 30’s) in corporate, every few years getting laid off or fired due to restructuring or sometimes my own fault. The feeling of being fired was my number one motivator to figure out how to start my own business, i never wanted to be fired again.
This is the issue that I have noticed. Students go to school for years, spend tens of thousands of dollars, just to graduate and still feel unprepared. That is scary 😳 Would we be better of paying the "company" to train us? ☝️ Point... Not every college is created equal. Be mindful where you spend your money
I wouldn’t pay the company to train me unless they had trainers with actual teaching qualifications. So many people who train others on the job and poor trainers. I have experienced that companies want things done “their way”, which college cannot teach you, but they expect you to know “their way” through osmosis and telepathy. This is especially true for companies with low management turn over, because those managers forget (or don’t realise) the same job is not the same work somewhere else.
I had the EXACT thing happen to me two months ago! It was so sad, didn’t even get to say bye to colleagues. I’d also never had a problem at work and put in so many extra training hours, but all in the end meant nothing. So sorry you also had to go through this, the worry of being fired again is real!
Thank you for being vulnerable. It's so rare to see this on social media. I also had performance issues in my previous job that led to me leaving said job. I'm in a better job now, but thinking about what happened still makes me angry to this day.
What I have learned in job environment, Never complained unless you are highly skilled and very performant. Always give compliments on how great the company is even if you don’t believe it. Long story short, be HYPOCRITE! Get the money and look for your financial freedom.
omg I love your story and you have such a captivating personality, I could watch you talking for hours! I'm only 3 years younger than you, and I can relate to some things you said like being lost asf after getting fired. I always worked with things I wasn't actually good at or had no interest in diving into, and when almost thinking I was too old or too dumb to anything, out of the blue I received a job offer. The job is great and I have coworkers of all ages, I think it's just a matter of time for us to find the right place or a thing we like to do and can make some money out of. Two months ago I could barely write a full sentence in english and now I'm here to say how crazy life is, we never know what is going to happen tomorrow! For good and for bad but we learn and value the good times Wishing you the best for you and your channel, keep posting!
Ugh sorry this happened! A PIP is protection for the company not really for the employee. Any time you get a PIP take that as a sign to look for a new job. Especially if it's a 30 day PIP. I have never seen anyone "recover" from a PIP. Also your manager LYING about your progress is TYPICAL unfortunately. Anyways I know getting fired is very jarring , but you will recover. It sounds like you've done the reflection and you ignored your intuition. Some jobs really are just a bad fit. You will do better next time for sure! You also need to LIE about being fired. Trust me on this. Just say you were laid off or the job was a contract position..
This times infinity. A PIP is a CYA from corporate to protect themselves from a wrongful termination lawsuit, ESPECIALLY if you fall under a protected class (race, age, religion, disabled, woman, LGBT+). This is corporate’s way of saying, “See? This person wasn’t doing well, and we tried to give them a chance, but they still didn’t measure up…”
A member of my family was unfairly fired because the company had to cut costs really fast (I guess some would call that being laid off - they did get a severance package and headhunter services), I know the lying part is so real and true. You’ve got to explain the exit and subsequent gap in your resume somehow. If you don’t say it was a contract job or that you were laid off, say you had to leave to care for an ill family member who ultimately died. Due to liability concerns, most former employers will not say you were fired if the new employer calls for a reference.
Lie 😮how are you going to get references?f I just removed this job from your RESUME since it didn't go well up to work environment 😮manger lied to you etc
@alinewandji8017 if she was there for a few months, then yes, leave it off her resume, but she was there for 8 or 9 months . She's worse off trying to explain the gap in employment. She will be fine on references. That is an outdated practice and most companies just confirm dates of employment. I change jobs often and haven't been asked for references in years. After you gain many years of experience, it is non-issue.
7 year sysadmin and 7 year PM here. I recommend to read PMBOK by PMI for methodology of project management because based on my professional experience I consider it the best abstraction. 4:04 Once you are confident with the product and the way it is delivered you will know how to lead people. Also upon on-boarding your manager should give you a training about your organization as well as about (PMBOK terminology) Enterprise Environmental Factors and Organizational Process Assets (all documents used in previous projects).
Giving you a big virtual hug. I remember being in your shoes. 20+ years ago. I now consider the jobs I was terrible at a great gift. It taught me what duties and roles are not a fit for me, saving me years of frustration. I did find a career that was a great fit, and I love what I do now, so hang in there.
This came up in my recommendation after recently being fired. I'm a very new RVT (vet tech/vet nurse) and still have skills to work on. My employer told me they weren't good at training and they delivered on that. After only 7 weeks they fired me for not being a good fit. They also said I wasn't learning quick enough. It sucks they didn't give me a proper chance or train me adequately because I know I could be really good. I wouldn't be so upset if it weren't for the fact that there are no jobs right now and it doesn't help that I'm new and my resume isn't stacked...
Chances are their turn-over is high. They're not professional. You can do better someplace else. Try a non-profit, human society, etc. Be a pet-sitter, dog walker etc. Employers do this on purpose.
@@munix9351 That or they’d have an excuse to fire an employee at any given moment. That’s basically what they were telling op. “We will fire you at any moment for any reason”.
Feeling incompetent is such a low feeling, and when other people tell you that they see your incompetence it cuts so deep!!! I'm glad to see you found something that made you happier❤ keep pushin To quote Jake The Dog, from Adventure Time, "Sucking at something is the first step to being sort of good at something"
It definitely hurts when you realise you're not up to scratch in a job. I had a job like that years ago and even though I put the effort in it just wasn't good enough. I got let go and confidence took a hit, but then I got a job a month later and they loved me 🤷🏾♀️. Some things just aren't for you!
Thank you for sharing your experience. I was put on a PIP a month ago. I had never been fired before either; I thought I could make it and it didn't work out. It's such a discouraging thing to go through.
I was fired from a job 12 years ago, and I think I'm still traumatized to this day. I still experience a lot of self-doubt/confidence issues. At the same time, I am glad to no longer be with that company. Only after being fired did I realize how stressed I was. I would literally come home many days and sleep from 7 PM - 7 AM just from being burnt out. It wasn't even the work itself that was so stressful. It was the people and feeling like I constantly had to watch my back.
I live in London and got fired just a week before my three month probation in 2018. I wasn't the best employee but I certainly wasn't the worst but my line manager didn't like me so when it was time to get rid of people I was first in line in her team. It was a brutal experience. I went to the office in the morning as normal and sat down. Another manager told me to grab all my things from my desk and come to one of the meeting rooms. My line manager emerged and said 'I wasn't meeting targets' and I was being fired effective immediate. I left in a daze! A colleague called me later on and told me the company (a start-up) was losing money and managers were asked to get rid of people.
Then why not just say that. Say they are downsizing instead of making you look like your the failure and ruin your future work reputation when looking for other jobs 🙄
Because companies only have their own best interests at heart [Capatilism]. Their employees are disposable. Whenever a company calls employees a family that's a big red flag in my opinion!
I had a very similar experience the year after I graduated from my university. I took a job that wasn’t right for me because honestly I didn’t know what I even wanted to do and just wanted so badly to leave my retail job, I made a lot of small mistakes, learned I might have ADHD, and got fired. Being fired is so traumatizing, my self esteem (which was already kind of below average) took a nose dive. I refused to apply to jobs for over a year because I was terrified of never being good enough and getting fired again or being asked why I left my last job, etc. I wish I would have just quit, but I had a never give up mentality back then lol. On the bright side, I went back to school for a career path that is exciting and creative, found a passion with creating art, met professors who believe in me, and while I’m now in post grad limbo again, I’m much more optimistic about my future prospects. Wish everyone who relates to this struggle the best of luck and future happiness ❤️
Oh my god we are actaully similar. I got fired from my first full time job after graduating university. The work environment broke me and getting fired I was scared of getting fired again so I didn't work for a year too. After my firing i felt I was not good enough for no employer.
Hey, although I’m not much experienced in life I just want to say something. I worked with a lot of people in their 30’s who have their degrees or masters and can’t find a good job (I work in fast food). But they have decided to change their lives and find a new passion or goal. For example, my coworker wanted to get a job in marketing but now is working towards being a personal gym trainer. My point is, life is too short and find a new passion or goal, remember it’s your life and you’re in control. Hoping you receive all my love through this comment.
So grateful you posted as this is exactly what happened to me last week. I so agree, it's the abrupt nature of it that is so hard, and finding out the reality of the 'friendships' you had at work. It sucks. But we get through it. You got through it, and so will I. Capitalism sucks
i've learned this from my own experience but also from listening to what it's like at my partner's job, which is more office oriented, some managers just care about looking good to their higher-ups. they're not actually willing to foster an environment where people thrive. you didn't deserve to get fired, you were set up to fail when your manager refused to hear you out. you clearly wanted to do well in the company, but they just needed you to fill a role whether it was suited to you or not. i hope you don't feel bad about not initially having the skillset needed to work out in project management - for one, that's already a daunting role, and two, most employees have someone to help coach them through the process in the beginning. honestly, it sounds like you've come really far from some very challenging milestones in your life. i'd love to hear more about how you keep a positive or productive mindset as you're navigating life. eager to hear some of your wisdom!
That's not true. Paying attention to details is really about your ability to ask the right questions and plan your personal time management to manage yourself whilst managing a project.
You have a great way of telling stories and have a very down to earth vibe! Congrats on the success of your last video. Your vulnerability and openness is really admirable and clearly resonated with a lot of people! Keep it up girl
I learned my lesson pretty early on at 23. I refuse to be loyal to any company and I don’t believe in work friendships. We can be cordial, but I don’t know you outside of work. No one can convince me otherwise.
You're so smart. Thank you for being real with us, it truly is life and perspective changing. You are destined for greatness, and that is why God removed you from where you thought was the comfort spot. I'm so happy I watched your videos. This is the beginning of so much greatness for you and everyone supporting your journey. We are here to grow with you.🎉❤
I had a job once and felt like I was failing in their eyes, even though they didn’t give me the training I needed nor the time to show them that I could! I wrote my resignation letter, went in on a Sunday cleared out my office and Monday went in normally, opened up my office, pulled up the door and went to hr and turn in my resignation effective immediately! I was an Event Manager and I loved it! It was a new field but I loved it, but the Director was making me more stressed than the actual Job itself, it was so miserable I was crying in my office and started smoking while breastfeeding ! Which I was 6 months postpartum! I said to myself and my husband that it’s not worth my baby’s health nor mine! So before I gave her the benefit of firing me which was eventually going to happen because I couldn’t please her, I left! It still haunts me but I think getting fired would have affected me more. I left to keep my dignity!
Could you make a video on how you got the job without the skills? I'm sure you have experience and you speak so well. But I would love to hear the details. Thank you for sharing this girl!
Hey there! thanks for your question! When I interviewed for the job, they saw that I had admin experience like emailing and collaborating on my resume. This role was very entery level so they didn't really care so much about the skill set since you're starting at the bottom. They just wanted to fill up the position as fast a possible. I can make a more detailed video later! Xoxo,Akouto
I got fired in June for the first time, it was also on a Friday. Everything seemed to be going normally and I was seeing the owner all that week. I didn't see her that Friday so I worked as normal, at the end of my shift i see the ex manager come in and she's giving me a termination letter. Even she was asking me why I was getting fired because it was random asf lol. I am glad i found you because we experienced the same thing. You will win and i'll be here to see it happen!
I just got fired yesterday... and i'm at the state where I'm very depressed and questioning my worth. I was too working and a big , fancy big corporate job. Thanks for sharing the story :)
Your channel is so refreshing. I also went through the HR hopping into what I thought was a regular 1:1 but turned out be my last day at the company . I was blindsided when the Regional manager joined the zoom . I was in shock and cried right in front of them . They tried to say I left on my own but I was able prove they fired me
Post every day from now, more story times in similar fashion to what has blown you up and you will get so ahead! I for one have subscribed and liked your videos:)
Lol, every time I've been fired it's been on a Friday. When I walked and made them pay me out of my 3 month notice it was a Monday. Getting fired the first time is emotional, however, after that you've learned the ways of the corporate life and you can play it better.
I watched that video and it was so therapeutic for me, I'm at a point where I'm ''stuck'' in my life, thank you for being transparent and real, I miss that genuineness on social media, keep sharing your experiences, you are inspiring!
I feel like we need to talk more about the effects of getting fired. It's so incredibly disruptive and it's more often than not done in an aweful way. I also had a similar experience that sucked, big time. I always thought getting fired was something that only happened to people that sucked at their job, but that wasn't even the case in my experience. They literally mentioned I did my job really well, but I was "too critical about things that are up to management to decide" (read: basic working conditions). It happened out of nowhere, and they did it through the phone. It turned out later I wasn't the only one and it was a small organisation. I don't know wtf happened there...
Or let's talk about not waiting to be fired and learning the skills to read a room. We often know we are not a good fit. But we waste time and hang about.
These are the stories we want! Congrats on your last 2 vids - they're so relatable. Real stories and honesty is what resonates with people - I feel like we're all sick of the pointless superficial haul/review/grwm videos or tiktok topics pitting everyone against each other or perfect lives social media wants to shove down our throats. The system isn't working for the average person anymore, and so many of us can relate to the career/direction in life struggle. Your personal story is a valuable commodity on the internet - congrats from a new subscriber!
Well said, I totally agree! I crave honesty and authenticity. The system is so wrong in so many ways, if we talk about it and share our stories maybe we can collectively change things.
Glad you're doing much better. These jobs are very interesting. I once was fired and cussed everyone out. Not my best day. I was young and didn't care.
You’re awesome! I’m currently dealing with being fired a few moths back, and this was such a perfect summary of how I feel, my experience, and the hope I don’t let go of.
Yep, it's happened to me last year in May. It was a call centre role at a retail bank. I had a ruthless team leader and the subsection where i was working was ruthless too. Similar story about thinking your coworkers and seniors are your friends. Nope. I kinda spiralled for a good year id say till i made a solid recovery. I'm back in uni now on a new degree because my new theory is, if i will dislike my job i might as well get paid well for it. Also i want to outearn everyone that got me fired there. 😊
I got fired from my first job out of college. It was a bit depressing but I just pushed forward. That was almost 30 years ago. You'll find your footing...the most important thing is to not give up and recognize what you need to improve and work on it. Hang in there.
Thanks for sharing I got fired from my first ever full time job since graduating university and since then I have felt like the world's biggest failure. I worry will never have a successful career
Project Management is something you learn over an extended period of time, or train and test for. Most companies require PMP certification. They literally set you up to fail.
Hi Akuto, I watched two of your videos and I think you have interesting content. People are interested in real issues that affect everyone. I have been put on a PIP plan and I have also been let go from my job. I am now at a stand still and trying to figure it out. Being fired can be a blessing because you are meant to be on a different path. The modern day company, lacks structure, organization, proper training to allow an employee to excel. I also noticed that companies are not aligned with peoples values today. I have learned that if the job does not fit you, then it is easier to accept that and move on.
You don’t need to tell any job you were fired. You can say, our goal and purpose no longer align.
that's what I told my job when i got the contract job!
Nice 👍
But some jobs contact your previous employer
@@Obekanobeeonly thing they do is verify time of employment
@@Obekanobeeyes but a lot of companies are hesitant to give a reason why you no longer work there. Opens them up for possible lawsuits. They will say if you are or are not eligible for rehire with no detail. I process background checks and this question is commonly “against company policy” to answer.
Getting fired early in my career was the best thing to happen to me. Now, my loyalty is to me and it made me fearless in moving on from a position.
Preach!!
how often do you change?
This comment 👌🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
agreed
Yep. Look after number one. Don’t let anyone own you. The main thing is live very far below your means and build an exit door. Until you have money behind you, you’ll always be subject to some employer.
Unrelated but this is why I find the 2 week notice to be nonsense, if they can fire people on a Friday afternoon with no prior notice, then quitting a toxic job on the spot sounds good to me
2 week notice seems like a blessing, for me i live in the UK and i’m an optometrist and notice periods in my profession are 3 months, it’s acc crazy
Now days it’s At a will. No longer the way it used to be
Exactly!!!
@@humaira2347THREE MONTHS NOTICE?!!! That’s crazy, can they still fire you within that timeframe?
I quit after the holidays so I could holiday pay lol. I sent an email saying I quit lol
Few things everyone should remember
1. Be loyal to no company. Keep all your personal stuff to yourself
2. Alwaysss go for what you want because you are valuable
3. Link with a temp agency they get paid when you get hired and they will fight for the pay you want
4. Take none of it personal leave a job if its not for you always have a plan!!
5. You being fired has nothing to do with how awesome you are!!!
Thank you for the tips!!
@@Jennifer_Lewis_Beach_Living exactly!!!
I gotta show my boyfriend this he's delusional
How do you find temp agencies ?
HR is not there to protect the employees. They are there to protect the company. HR, Management, employees are not your friends. I tell my young adult kids that all the time.
So who would you speak to when issues arise?
@@Moonsauko speak about personal issues and get fired
Learned this the hard way! I just wouldn’t speak to HR about my job related performance, concerns about my manager, or things you don’t like. It will likely backfire.
I worked at a career in the same organisation for many years and I can remember when it seemed like HR switched from helping employees to being just a tool of management.
So true !!!!!
It really makes you question yourself like nothing else I've faced in life.
how did you overcome that?
I got fired twice from two different jobs and looking back, it was ridiculous. The second job especially made it like I was the worst person ever, like I was just a cruel and mean person. Luckily, I had the money saved up to take some time and regroup. I think I only recovered once I started working again and saw that, no, I'm not a bad worker.
I'm in the same boat. My last job acted like I was the worst person. I'm still in the regrouping phase. I'm so shaken it's hard to even envision working again. How did you manage to be brave enough, please? @@rosesweetcharlotte
I’m 23 and had the exact same experience. Happened 2 weeks ago after only 2 months. I’ve been feeling really down over it tbh.
@@medalithgm Honestly, it took working a few more jobs and time.

I swear, recruiters are so underrated!
is that like an employment agency?
oh i need a corporate recruiter then
It shouldn’t surprise me anymore, but I’m always confused how organizations with a bunch of money still manage to completely mis-manage their employees. There’s so much waste of money, time, and resources to hire and on-board people, just to manage them poorly and fire them. It’s so senseless. At least it’s an opportunity to learn how *not* to do things. Glad you stayed on this planet!!
A lot of management never actually get management training.
Become a manager
People always say the moment you are put on a PIP start looking for a new job. Its almost always a formality before firing you.
Vzw
Exactly! The PIP is the company’s protection. Formality!
I once got put on a pip and survived another year, which was odd because i was working my tail off but scared i was about to be let go at any moment. 12 months of thinking i had maybe 2-3 days before i was fired made me start graying.
Completely agree. A PIP means they want to fire you but need to protect themselves from litigation so need everything documented.
If you ever get put on a PIP, start looking for a new job immediately. They only do that for documentation purposes so they can fire you.
exactly
Documentation purpose? Can you elaborate?

Sometimes, we have to go through a rough time in order to get to what is meant for us. Finding our purpose is painful but I think you found yours. Continued blessings
excellent video....was laid off from sales development position with a software company after 1 year 8 months with them...... what I learned or was reminded of......
1. budget like an entrepreneur, in other words, never live paycheck to paycheck but live from your savings and your savings should cover as many months or years as possible
2. live moderately as a lifestyle for the sake of saving more and mentally dealing with economic blows better
3. always promote your passion daily and make it a business
4. never forget that God is real and He wants us to love Him and trust in Him....not in money or people
GOD I relate so hard. Still is.

I wish I'd lose weight from work stress. I'd be a size 0 by now. I gain weight from work stress because I eat to soothe.

Yeah, this matches my understanding of PIPs. It’s labeled as an improvement plan, but often it’s just creating a paper trail to HR can fire you. PIPs in tech especially can be ruthless :/
I hate also seeing my coworkers get fired.
Now people do that on tik tok.

Which line of work are you in?
If you’ve been on a PIP twice, you’re the problem. You’re not a good employee.
Actually I had an undiagnosed learning disability. Think before you speak

My role is probably kind of similar, and what you said about losing connection really struck me. At my previous job, (same industry, different company), a woman was fired. Our manager told a woman who had been very close to her “Don’t communicate, she wants answers and you don’t have any.”
I was floored. I really hope that woman didn’t take that advice. I just couldn’t believe that there was leadership talking like that, telling people not to maintain a professional connection!
Being set up to fail sucks. You didn't deserve that...

That Performance Review with 30 days was just them trying to fire you correctly. If they were serious about keeping you, they would have given you 90 days to improve. That is the norm in other jurisdictions/ countries. They already knew they were going to fire you. There was no way you would improve in 30 days.
GIRL!! You said it! I thought the same!!!
They don’t even train and they get mad when you don’t know how to do the job
This is the issue that I have noticed. Students go to school for years, spend tens of thousands of dollars, just to graduate and still feel unprepared. That is scary 😳
Would we be better of paying the "company" to train us?
☝️ Point... Not every college is created equal.
Be mindful where you spend your money
Facts
I wouldn’t pay the company to train me unless they had trainers with actual teaching qualifications. So many people who train others on the job and poor trainers. I have experienced that companies want things done “their way”, which college cannot teach you, but they expect you to know “their way” through osmosis and telepathy. This is especially true for companies with low management turn over, because those managers forget (or don’t realise) the same job is not the same work somewhere else.
Bless you. Thank you for sharing such a vulnerable story. It’s beyond brutal how some companies operate and the shame is theirs.
For good and for bad but we learn and value the good times
Wishing you the best for you and your channel, keep posting!
She can’t lie about it now though
Great advice, I'm taking note of this for sure.
Babyyyy your channel blowing up QUICK
Giving you a big virtual hug. I remember being in your shoes. 20+ years ago. I now consider the jobs I was terrible at a great gift. It taught me what duties and roles are not a fit for me, saving me years of frustration. I did find a career that was a great fit, and I love what I do now, so hang in there.
What do you do now?
Was wondering the same. I am a lost 24 year old having a quarter-life crisis😭@@itzyogirl100
They said that so they wouldn't pay you good enough
@@munix9351 That or they’d have an excuse to fire an employee at any given moment. That’s basically what they were telling op. “We will fire you at any moment for any reason”.
Work for non-profit pet hospital, or vet office , animal control, pest control, start ur own bussinesses …pet sitting and walking !!!
They said they’re not good at training
So u say, oh no thx then
I can’t read minds on how to learn my job
Feeling incompetent is such a low feeling, and when other people tell you that they see your incompetence it cuts so deep!!! I'm glad to see you found something that made you happier❤ keep pushin
To quote Jake The Dog, from Adventure Time, "Sucking at something is the first step to being sort of good at something"
Dude that sounds just like my experience. At the time I was living with my mom and sisters. They told me I would come home and go to sleep.
mani got fired 4 months ago and it felt like heartbreak....trying to get over the self doubt and hit to my confidence. still job hunting now *sigh*
I got fired before making 170k a year. I was devastated but It's a blessing in disguise bc something better always comes!
Hoping you receive all my love through this comment.
i appreciate your candidness, definitely insightful for me as a 24 year old and is reassuring. praying for your success that I know will come soon!
Make sure you do a lot of networking outside of work with other people in your network. Build your industry network.
So grateful you posted as this is exactly what happened to me last week. I so agree, it's the abrupt nature of it that is so hard, and finding out the reality of the 'friendships' you had at work. It sucks. But we get through it. You got through it, and so will I. Capitalism sucks
Now is your time !!! You’re a really inspiring person👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
i've learned this from my own experience but also from listening to what it's like at my partner's job, which is more office oriented, some managers just care about looking good to their higher-ups. they're not actually willing to foster an environment where people thrive. you didn't deserve to get fired, you were set up to fail when your manager refused to hear you out. you clearly wanted to do well in the company, but they just needed you to fill a role whether it was suited to you or not. i hope you don't feel bad about not initially having the skillset needed to work out in project management - for one, that's already a daunting role, and two, most employees have someone to help coach them through the process in the beginning.
honestly, it sounds like you've come really far from some very challenging milestones in your life. i'd love to hear more about how you keep a positive or productive mindset as you're navigating life. eager to hear some of your wisdom!
If you’re someone who doesn’t pay attention to details and make mistakes, it doesn’t matter the role , you’ll be on the chopping block.
welp, I'm screwed.
That's not true. Paying attention to details is really about your ability to ask the right questions and plan your personal time management to manage yourself whilst managing a project.
Everyone makes mistakes sometimes
You have a great way of telling stories and have a very down to earth vibe! Congrats on the success of your last video. Your vulnerability and openness is really admirable and clearly resonated with a lot of people! Keep it up girl
Your truthfulness has been a breath of fresh air. Keep doing what you do love ❤️
Your pure honesty with a touch of positivity is so refreshing!
“It didn’t feel right” that resonates! Wow! Thanks for being on TH-cam!
Xoxo,Akouto
Well done girl, keep the authenticity
Well done that’s an achievement finding a job after a week! Nothing everything that glitters is gold!
The company admitted they made the mistakes. At times companies can set up their employees they dislike them and give them bad training.
Nothing happens out of nowhere in the corporate environment. Nothing. We have to learn the social cues
@@munix9351I think people like to think that, but the truth is, sometimes you are blindsided.
Indeed This is the real life truths we need to hear !!
Well said, I totally agree! I crave honesty and authenticity. The system is so wrong in so many ways, if we talk about it and share our stories maybe we can collectively change things.
Yes! it’s a worldwide problem!
This !!!!
Great video! Thanks for sharing your experience! You’re doing HEALING work with these videos…Please keep ‘em coming……
I pray that you will get over being fired and that God will bless you with new opportunities🎉
So relatable. Glad life moves on. It feels hopeless, but I pray in the future to tell my story with humility and laughter as well.
Thanks for being so real and raw with your experience. Rooting for you sis!
I just subscribed to your channel. Your content looks so interesting!
