    on job hopping: literally my boomer father is the one that gave me the advice to leave a job when you need to leave. i told him i was feeling bad about quitting this one job and he was like "don't ever feel bad about quitting. because if they were to let you go, are they gonna feel bad? no."

      My job wasted money to buy water jugs for medical assistants and gave them to us the week after medical assistant week all while people have been quitting in the past three months. Like…we don’t want some water jugs, give us raises or a bonus🫠 I’m quitting in December🤫

    as a gen z, everytime i get a job i go above and beyond my duties and my boss notices that then adds to my duties and expects more and more over time, and thats why i get burnt out very quickly, never had a boss that didnt do this to me. its confusing because im being praised for being a good worker while also being picked at ab a million different tiny things that i "forgot" (usually something id never been told about or never had to do before and neither did my coworkers) i think a lot of older people assume that because your young you can handle it all.

      are you me? 'cause i have this exact issue
      working at (DUNKABLE COFFEE CORPORATION), have been for over a year. my mind and body are completely breaking down. i cannot function in any areas of my life anymore. i finally told my manager i was gonna quit, and this is the first time in MONTHS that i've only had to work three days this week. she will berate her workers at random. she gets on me for missing fifty billion tasks that i either had no way of knowing about, or couldn't possibly remember. every time i step into work i fall back into trauma responses because even thinking about the store is stressful.
      also: i might be autistic (explains the years of burnout and general ... everything) and they are absolutely not accomodating. even if they claim to understand. but the entire concept of the job is a hellscape for neurodivergency, so in reality i need to quit. doesn't help that the adults in my life don't give a damn about my safety or health when it isn't directly serving them and the cult we're stuck in 🤷

    The job I’m currently at I heard the older coworkers say “no one wants to work nowadays.” Meanwhile the company cuts everyone’s hours as if we don’t need money to survive, gives the smallest raise ever & pays the bare minimum, no room to grow, never recognizes any of your hard work & how the company benefits from you being in your position, etc. Whenever I hear the phrase “no one wants to work anymore,” I immediately think the job/position is just plain and simply not good/beneficial or worth it to the worker, Espicially in the long run.

    The 'Gen Z has no loyalty' takes gets me HEATED! It's been 4 years since I've graduated. Of those 4 years - 23 of those months I was unemployed. TWENTY-THREE. Almost half of it. Why? Because the companies laid me off. I literalky don't want to hear anything out of their mouths. If you're going to treat it like a temp job, I'll treat it like a temp job. 😒😒😒

      fr. my brother recently got laid off even though he was one of the company’s best employees. he generated a ton of profit for this company while constantly increasing their savings, and they let him go with absolutely no warning. he was only given a month’s worth of unemployment.

      No you don’t need to be loyal to corporations who generally don’t care about you and will and can replace you. Businesses that claim they’re “family” is just another excuse for them to overwork you for next to nothing. Anytime someone says to me we’re like a family at work, I immediately walk away. Your loyalty should only be given to people who earn it. Anytime you’re being mistreated at work, you leave.
      Companies aren’t loyal to you. You don’t owe them anything.

    This is honestly one of the main reasons I’m afraid to get a job. I’m only 20 years old but the fact that this is a thing *and* I’m super nervous and shy (and have several disorders like autism and ADHD) is why I’m so afraid to work.
    The misery I can deal with since I just naturally am constantly miserable but I’m afraid of people

      @@mx.chi2exactly I suffered because my dad purposefully kept me from attempting to get a job until I finally went behind his back when I was 21 but because of him holding me back I'm now 25 and feeling like I'm playing catch up compared to others my age who have a car and all my cousins were basically gifted a vehicle on a silver platter the minute they turned 18 and got a drivers license but since that first job I was pushed around and taken advantage to the point where it got too much multiple times and I lost said job multiple times I have slowly learned various lessons over that timeframe....
      One key moment at my lastest job that I've had for almost 5 months now was when they kept sending over this really shit worker that they keep hired on and who I literally can't communicate with outside of a translator app and this specific building I am cleaning has VERY STRICT SECURITY POLICIES we have to lock every door behind us when we go into a room to clean purely because of the value of some of the deals and paperwork going through these offices I've seem checks with thousands of dollars on em just laying on desks so its big business I guess? But initially I mistakenly assumed they let this guy know all the particularities of this building they HAVE TO DO otherwise they will lose the right to clean the building and I was extremely wrong and on top of that the guy basically constantly didn't do all of his assigned duties and actively didn't lock doors behind him despite me pulling up my translator app MULTIPLE TIMES TO TELL HIM YOU HAVE TO LOCK THE DOORS BEHIND YOU! Suffice to say they sent this guy enough times within a short timeframe that building security was fucken pissed to find doors unlocked so fucking much (despite coming back constantly to lock em up when I should be doing my own section) that the management put the building on review (meaning judging whether I needed to be fired or not even though it was the floater guy (person who isn't stationed at one single building) who was creating the issues but essentially higher management trued to give me a write up for not micro managing some dipshit who couldn't follow instructions like LOCK THE FUCKING DOOR!
      AND for the first time in my life working I SHIT THAT SHIT DOWN REALLY QUICK! Texted my manager tons of messages showing evidence of the guy THEY sent leaving shit unlocked showed videos I took of me being forced to stay way overtime just to clean things the guy just didn't clean.
      And for one thing that write up got dropped really quickly and secondly when the review process began another worker who was working that building who clearly didn't want to be there got fired(he basically got the job pawned off by his mom he really didn't care and I get that) but he got fired but when they tried to review my work and abilities (clearly trying to clean house) I had all the supervisors and managers I worked with coming out the cracks going he's a good worker he doesn't create problems and he does his job don't fire him! 😂 I had managers and supervisors telling upper management THEIR BOSSES to not fire me which felt pretty good~~~
      BUT THE POINT IS OF ALL THIS!!! The faster you get in the quicker you figure things out and then can start creating contacts and relationships and establishing job security even if you can't afford a car or your own place having a job JUST to start SAVING MONEY IS EXTREMELY VALUABLE because you have options at that point to branch out further invest in what you WANT to do, keep your mood up better by having money to go out and do recreational activities etc etc~

    I have a coworker who acts like this. Acts like I don't do work and don't deserve the job, just because I'm not making my health exponentially worse when I get paid minimum wage.
    I'm chronically ill, and my boss actively has told me to not do more than what I feel I can physically do. Some days, that means I can't do much cleaning; other days I can do quite a bit. But this coworker still puts me down even when I clean a lot and have a good day, yet refuses to say what I do wrong. So many people just want to blame Gen Z for their own character flaws

      Yes, I know in some cases in jobs I’ve worked I have or some of my coworkers have overworked and have been underpaid or been refused to pay. That’s what people don’t talk about with Gen Z. They think sometimes people are just lazy, but also people are refusing to pay us.

      fr. when i worked fast food, people would get mad at me for only doing the bare minimum and not busting my arse. i’m like why should i? i’m getting paid the same amount that you are even though you act like you’re going to be promoted to CEO for doing too much 😂 i was getting paid minimum wage with no benefits, all while being treated like dirt by managers and being abused by customers all day with absolutely no protections. damn straight i’m only doing the bare minimum

      Most steady jobs are HELLHOLES. If your job was fun. fulfilling and paid well. lots of OTHER people would want it and you'd be easy to replace!

      Me at work telling my coworkers I’m paid to be a cashier, not to be a loss prevention officer. I would not get any extra pay or compensation for getting punched in the face by someone who I caught stealing, so why would I put myself at risk of bodily harm? It’s none of my business 🤷‍♀️

      I do taxes and I'm the youngest person in the room. During tax season the hours are long and people don't take their lunch. I had an older coworker tell me she was proud of me for always taking my lunch. I was astounded hearing that!! I'm taking my lunch!! I don't even want to be here for the other hours😂😂😂

      I always come back to this too! Like, regardless of how accurate the statement is “gen z doesn’t want to work” I’m always like, okay but, why should we have to? Why should labor be something we are excited about and want to do for the rest of our lives? Why is it “morally wrong” for me to wish and want a life where I don’t have to do work to survive? Where I could just have fun? Where I could just enjoy life? Why do I HAVE to WANT to do work? (If anyone wants to reply to this with “that’s just how the world is” or anything along those lines, plz don’t. I’m working right now as I type this, I have a job and will probably always need to do it. I don’t want to hear about how I cannot enjoy life the way I would like to. Thank you)

Any engineering or technical field would have the most benefit lying about skills mostly because no one actually has 4 years of experience for certain tools/frameworks/etc when they came out 5 years ago. Plus, all of these are heavily documented and most people with zero experience can get up to working knowledge within a few weeks. Padding propr work experience with fake duties is a good way of accomplishing this.
      Grossly exaggerating your impact is also a good idea. Let's say you sent an email for work on a project and that project ended up launching and making the company $300 million. Guess what? That $300 million is because of your efforts.
      Once you realize that HR departments don't actually verify anything on your resume besides your start and end dates at other companies, you can get away with a lot. Hope this helps.

      Thank you. I'm in Nigeria and abuse is normalized on a family level, like it's part of life. It got to the point where I couldn't accept help from people because I felt like they would want something I don't have. I also had a time where I was expecting difficulty at every "office" process I involved in, especially things that had to do with school. If I go to an office, I would expect to wait an hour before I spoke to anyone and definitely I'm spending the whole day there. Right now, I don't jump when a superior sneezes anymore, I've decided to choose myself. I mean if I die, work will go on and if I'm so important, it'll slow them down for a hot minute and that's it. There's been times I just stayed home and called in sick because I just wasn't feeling it😅. I made a comment in a group with my highschool class and people were like "good girl gone bad" 😂😂. I was punctual, civil, very nice and obedient. I did have a carefree side though; I chose to go to the library and read James Hardly Chase at 13 rather than be at an economics class 😅, I also defied my dad and sat for an art exam instead of economics (I hate social science and business 😢, I guess I've always known my boundaries). Another reason for us acting like we don't want to work is the fact that we all know it doesn't pay 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️. Hardwork and education were the keys we were told to find, then they changed the locks 😂😂 people used to say this when I was in the university and now I see with my own eyes 😂😂. I mean Jake Paul doesn't have any of them 🤷🏾‍♀️

    Had a conversation with my dad on this topic. He says my generation is lazy and doesn’t want to work. Meanwhile, he doesn’t hire inexperienced people because he doesn’t want to train them. How else do you expect young people to get the job done if old people like you don’t hire them solely because they don’t have 40 years of experience fresh out of school? You start at the bottom with no experience and work your way to the top. So wtf??

      Or never get promoted so you just burn out. I was always praised as the best retail worker, winning a nespresso maker from one job for being the top district selling (when someone gives my name when checking out), but I was never once promoted or received a raise. I was technically part time but because of my states law I was working 30 hours a week+ without getting benefits, PTO hours, and got 30minutes of sick hours per 40 hours worked (I think it was even more but I don’t want to over exaggerate the number accidentally). I finally left and am back in college. You are worth being happy ❤

    Heavy reminder as well for young people in the workforce, HR works for the company, not for you. HR is to protect company, not you. Go to HR if you feel you need but also be cautious. I've had HR protect terrible, hateful people while telling me the issue has been solved.

      Union reps are the actual hr, but even then they aren't really going to be your friend, just making sure whether or not your being exploited. And if your dragging them down as well, often they'll say you aren't holding up your end.

      Yes, absolutely! HR is not your friend. They are paid by the employer, which means they work for the employer. Their top priority is to reduce liability for the employer. If you do have to go to HR, make sure you have written documented proof of what happened or why. Try to get their responses in writing. Just as they document everything on you, you have to have your own documentation to protect yourself.
      Edit: Also your co-workers and especially supervisors are not your friends. They will stab you in the back if it means it will protect their job. Not saying it's right, but it does happen.

    In my last job , if I was 3 minutes late they'd take it off my paycheck ,but then expected me to stay working late for 45mins-1hour without paying me , I said if you want me to work late , pay me. All of a sudden I got the "your generations so lazy" rant, it's tiring .

    The Plague of 2020 showed us that our systems are all messed up, and that there's better ways of living. I can't remember the source of the poll, but it asked milennials and Gen Z about what we would do if we didnt have to work didn't need money. Most people said they would do something that is some kind of work, but it was something based in their interests or how they would contribute to a happier society. So they deduced its not that we don't wanna work, its that the work in the world today is unfulfilling and no one is making enough to experience joy on a consistent enough basis for it to be worthwhile.

      Uh, these sort of "interest activities" are not useful to society at all. Say you abolish society's current "messed up system", if you thought for a second that drawing nude art and making creamy latte is work that benefits society, then you, and Gen Z, have no idea how society functions and I pray yall don't have the power in numbers to make such retarded "change".
      The jobs we have now are voluntary contracts you agree to with your employer to get paid worth your time, while you deliver a product of sort that benefits the employer, to which the employer uses it for other means and investments. This is applied to miners, office work, cashers, pharamcists, factory workers and etc...
      This system led to an abundance of goods and a better quality of life for everyone. I am not going to argue our system is "good", because it's not, it has so much flaw and I can trace most of them to the corrupt government, but this sort of "utopia" that somehow doing retarded "artistic work" will somehow save humanity, is mind boggling.

      I’m a 30 year old man who works a job that requires me to often be at a new job site every day. You’d not believe how many comments I get about being young. One guy even did the “what’s the magic word” to me last week because I said “could you hand me that paper” like boomers do to kids in preschool and then said he did it because I’m as old as his grandkids. Mostly they’ll just refer to me as the kid or young man though. They at least like try to hide their sexism but are so open about the way they view people in their 20’s as a kid who knows nothing

    I was born in 1999, and even I'm feeling this "we expect x, y, and z from you, but we're going pay you and support you for half of your worth." vibe, assuming that I'm not auto-rejected from apply for jobs. It's unreal how many expectations are on the workers, and how the companies enjoy just letting things slide instead of actually seeing workers as people. I applied for an entry level job at Walmart and was rejected same day within a couple of hours. I was over qualified, as I've been working in customer service since high-school. Likewise, I don't blame the new generations for not wanting to work, why should they want to when every other generation is too busy letting us know how good they have it while giving us their table scraps.

    I’m an autistic gen Z.
    I’ve been desperately trying to get a job, as Im taking a gap year to save up for college.
    I only asked for 2 things.
    1: The ability to wearn noise reducing headphones while working, and
    2: 1 extra 10 minute break I can take if I get overstimulated.
    I’ve explained that if I get those accommodations, I’d be able to work significantly better.
    I’m more than qualified for all the jobs I’ve been interviewed for; I had some of the highest grades of my graduating class, I’ve volunteered at the ASPCA every weekend for the past 3 years, etc.
    I have basically everything employers are looking for.
    I’ve been interviewed for 7 jobs in the past month.
    I’ve been denied from 7 jobs in the past month.
    The biggest reasons? I’m “asking for too much” (aka basic disability accommodations??) and that I’m “not what they’re looking for”
    The jobs I’ve applied for?
    Grocery bagger, cashier, barista and A MCDONALDS CHEF.
    I got denied for a job for FLIPPING BURGERS.
    I’m currently doing food delivery, and it’s horrible. I’m making less than minimum wage for 10x the work.
    I have another interview next week, wish me luck🫠

    Worked at a dominoes, Halloween was coming up and I was told it’s mandatory to work a couple hours, makes sense. People want pizza for their parties and stuff. Turned my 4 hour shift into 12 because my manager gave everyone else the day off. Once I found that out I was a no show and they begged me to come back a week later

Millennials had this mindset but didn’t have the luxury (per-say) to “stand on business” because many of us graduated college during the Great Recession. We had to take what we could get and deal with it.
    And to be clear, we were also called unemployable and lazy by the Boomers. I have a great hope that once they FINALLY retire that things might have a chance at changing.

    My dad got laid off from his job of over 15 years in 2008. A lot of Gen z were kids during the recession and I think that influences a lot of the ways we view work. Why put so much into a job that will eventually lay me off and doesn’t even afford me the basic cost of living? What are we even working for? Love your Gen Z content by the way, you do a great job of encapsulating the thoughts and trends of this generation.

      Right like I saw the affects of the recession, and then saw my mom get laid off not even a decade later from the BIGGEST industry in my state. And then she went to work for the government. And i saw how many times they shut down. So yeah, I don't have blind faith in companies. I've only had one job I truly loved, which was a small coffee shop with coworkers my age but even that had issues. Now I'm at some bunk office job. I'm not even gonna pretend I'm not here for anything but the money and benefits

    But in reality, I think most of Gen Z (including myself) is tired of just working and not having a “work-life” balance outside of it. We feel like those hours are wasted, and we can never get those back 🙃.

      exactly. we spend the bulk of our day, 5 (sometimes 6) days a week working. all i can think of while at work is how much of my life is going down the drain, all that time i will never get back. if you work a 9-5, you’re lucky if you get 4 hours to yourself in a day. barely any time to spend with loved ones, for hobbies, for chores, for passion projects, etc. and many of us can’t even afford a house. it’s bleak. i’d be fine with working if work life balance was actually a balance. 5 days of work and 2 days off is not balance

      Working feels like using a dating app and it tires me out very quickly. I spend a few months scrolling through different people and reaching out with no meaningful responses and then when I finally do get a good conversation its just a situationship for like 3-6 months

    Older generations wanting us to go through what they went through is just such a foreign concept to me. I'm turning 21 soon, and I'm already hoping and praying for a better future for those who come after me. I don't want them to go through the same things I've gone through so far. Wishing hardships on other people just because you had to deal with them is just so gross, and sounds like an exhausting way to live.

    Being younger GenZ entering the world looking at my whole generation being slammed before I ever had a chance to be a part of what's being discussed is so depressing. I'm 17 and have been looking for a job for a while now. I have 12 years of Girl Scouts and a leadership and community service club under my belt, and I have a strong drive to work because I'm staring down the barrel of my 18th birthday, soon after which I'll be basically kicked out. Nowhere is hiring, the places that are refuse to hire GenZ, and left and right I'm being told I'm lazy and entitled and useless simply because of the time period I was born in. Wild shit.

    No loyalty also makes me mad… the amount of people I know (boomer and Genx) that have been laid off right before retirement is insane. Many companies have no loyalty or morals when it comes to their employees and it’s crazyyyy

    Oh and having worked with gen z it’s a mixed bag like it is with everyone but on the most part I think they just take job descriptions literally when it comes to hours of work, expectations etc. when they’re given “opportunities” to do more for nothing in the work place they see it for what it is, a waste of time. They aren’t mega focused on working their way up the ladder in their current job because they know that likely won’t happen if they want to move up they consider leaving. They’re right and I support all of that.

      As a Gen Z I can second that. I take my job descriptions literally and if they suddenly tack on A LOT of unsaid things once I’m “hired” that’s an immediate turn off (I’ll probably still work but definitely is a bad mark in my books and lowers my “worker morale”).

      The only reason most of us take those "opportunities" is to put it on the resume for a better next job.
      Clearly not all will work well flr that, but for me, it was useful to leverage resposibilites i had at past places into a better job somewhere else.

      Exactly. They aren't going to promote you or give you a raise. Upward mobility is a thing of the past. Why would they promote someone internally and be forced to give them a modest pay increase when they could bring in someone new and trick them into accepting a job managing people who are only making a few pennies' difference than them? This is why they don't want you to discuss your salary. Because then everyone will find out that they're being severely underpaid.

      I only started taking my job descriptions more literally after in my first job I was told to wander and keep an eye on things at an art festival, and because it was my first job I had never known that having my phone out meant that I wasn’t doing my job, meanwhile the other workers were camped out at one part of the festival talking for hours. I was sent home and warned I would be fired next time and was run ragged the rest of my time there making 20+ laps at the festival because every time I stopped I was being reprimanded and no one else was.
      Then I switched to a different job at the same festival and was required to do menial booking. Until my not boss told me I had to do his job, I looked at myself and then the other people in my position and realized I did 3x more work in the booking and was also given my bosses work and was being paid less than them. I no showed during the off season and never went back.
      Now when I work I know how to communicate with a boss and make sure I only do what won’t burn me out. I still do an above and beyond job but I don’t let myself get taken advantage of.

The place I work right now treats us all insanely well (like actual human beings) but the department is under management of another department and doesn't decide their pay or all their policies independently. Every year they fight for raises for all of us and generally are very successful (11% raise two years ago, 30% raise last year. low wage job so this was financially reasonable although I'm sure the percentages will decrease now as the wage increases). However they can't leverage the department that employs our grad students so even though they work here, they're paid there. If we get one more dollar on our pay we'll have some undergraduates making more than the graduate students who manage them...

    I feel like half the Gen Z discourse is so silly because it’s not a generationally specific thing…it’s an age thing. 18-25 year olds have always been looked down on and less likely to get hired. I’m a Millennial and when I graduated, there was a “Millennials only care about work life balance and don’t want to put in the work.” But as people get further up the ladder, they’re usually compensated enough where this issues no longer matter. If you’re a Gen Z’er making $40k/year in a major city…of course you’re not dreaming about work or putting your company first. You know you’re disposable. And of course a 40-50 something making six figures in an inflated role is going to be all “y’all don’t work hard enough.”
    I can guarantee that in 10-15 years, the same Gen Z will be shitting on Gen Alpha. The old heads shit on the younger ones. The seniors shit on the freshmen and forgot that they were just like them not too long ago…

      Before social media, I would agree with you that Gen Z would talk down on Gen alpha. But now that it's all out in the open for the average person to analyze the bigger picture, I don't think this trend will continue. The constant exposure to news about crises and economic instability through social media, has left most of Gen Z in a different mindset compared to previous generations. I'm expecting Gen Z to either be completely nihilistic, or extremely altruistic toward Gen alpha...nothing in between.

A huge portion of that salary is taken out for taxes, and then there's rent, food, and bills. Don't even get me started on roommates, which is the only way to reduce rent unless you live with family.

      @tvu24 I live in Salt Lake. It's decently expensive here. But I've done fine on 20k for years now. I could definitely do with more, but having double the income sounds insane. I'd probably just save 10-15k a year. I am a minimalist and pretty frugal though. And I refuse to use credit cards, which most Americans use. So maybe it's easier for me 🤷‍♂️

    As a mid range Gen z I’ve quit 4 jobs over the years. 3/4 jobs have begged me to comeback, like I’m sorry no. You literally treated me like garbage, and now you want me back for the same amount of pay because you realized I was a good employee. One of those jobs the regional manager came to me and asked if I would consider just working weekends. I said no, working 5 days a work is already a lot for me (I have a chronic illness that effects my whole body) working 7 days a week for 2 different companies is a hell no from my body.

    gosh please your last statement hit me so hard. apparently in my state, there is such a high demand for court reporters that we are considered in a state of emergency, so i went to school. every time i try to apply, they want 5 years experience. i cant get 5 years experience if no one will hire me. the ONE job application that didn’t have any required experience required on the listing interviewed me and said they were looking for someone with 3 years experience. cant win.

      Honestly at this point Americans are working just to survive. Our affordable food is full of chemicals and preservatives that are illegal in other countries while food that is clean and organic that holds up to say the uk basic standards is triple the price. Add to that outrageous rent prices and healthcare that’s not as affordable as they want you to think and you are going to work just to pay bills, buy groceries and praying you don’t get sick

      @@scottrobinson9334 I feel you. THough not an American. I live in Europe. Please, invest in at least some gold and silver jewellry every month. So that after several months, you will have several silver and gold jewellries - just collect them cause you can always rely on them in times of need. And, of course, not to mention, saving money helps, too, however, I know well saving money isnt that realistic with current prices. BUT - please, try to buy the higher quality food and beverages as many times as possible, despite all difficulties. You can start slow. Also, dont forget about some spirituality, as well. Pray a lot to good spiritual entities and ask them for abundance. Relax a lot and develop a stressless mindset, while focusing on investing in silver and gold. Teach others in your country about these things, too. Best wishes.

      American work culture is really messed up. We are all forced into this system, but it doesn't mean we like it. I wish I had 5 weeks of PTO like Europeans and the more laid back atmosphere. In american companies, everything is always a fire, they run intentionally short staffed to save costs and then work the employees to the bone until they burn out and break, then the company kicks them to the trash. But many people here are bootlickers and defend the system. They hate their lives so they become workaholics to compensate, and demand the rest of us join them.

    as a gen z who loves to work hard nobody wants to hire me because I don’t have any experience even tho i’m applying to entry level jobs. no shit I have no experience Im 16 trying to get a job for the first time at taco bell why do i need experience? I have applied to 25 seperate places and they either ghost me, say i’m unqualified, interview me and then ghost me, say that I need to be 18 ( keep in mind these job listings literally SAY they are for 16-17 year olds) or they just reject my application. I wouldn’t say my generation don’t want to work, I think it’s a couple different people ruining it for everyone. I am, and a lot of my friends are very hardworking and nobody can seem to find a job. The issue isn’t my resume either, and Ive always said I can work the most hours possible, even holidays.

    I’m older Gen Z (1998), and I graduated with my bachelor’s in 2020. I haven’t had trouble getting jobs, but getting jobs that pay well was a constant struggle.
    I encourage everyone I know to job hop. Otherwise, you’re going to find yourself sitting at a job for 20 years making maybe 10% more than you made when you started. There’s not as much mobility as there once was because people don’t seem to be retiring.

      I mean it probably wouldn’t be acceptable in an office setting but you’re at a sports event, the dress code is obviously going to be different. If it was just a miniskirt I could definitely see why that could be a problem but a skort is made so everything is covered up. At that point you’re just nitpicking.

      It may be illegal, but it's hard to prove that someone discriminated based on age. They'll do their best to make it seem like that wasn't the reason they didn't hire someone, despite it being the reason.

      If you’re talking about the Age Discrimination in Employee Act, it only forbids age discrimination of those 40 years or older so it still doesn’t apply 😭 and on top of that, it’s like the other commenter said, as well: how could you prove that’s what you’re experiencing especially if they never state that as their reasoning. I will say that some states have laws that protect younger generations, but those obviously aren’t constitutional or federal.

      @1nerd187 unfortunately, and you will understand this as you get older, you can be very qualified, but someone else may have more work experience and life experience that will make it easier for them to jump into the role, and that makes it hard to prove they were discriminating. There are jobs that I have had in the past that I would be much better at now, not because I am more qualified, but because I have experience understanding the workforce, work culture, and how to ask appropriate questiond to get the training I need and how to advocate for myself.

      This may correlate with how there's a significant decrease in drinking amongst younger people.
      I don't care if someone wants to drink - they can do whatever they want - but for me, alcohol of any kind tastes terrible, and it having the effect of worsening your ability to think & make decisions absolutely does not sound like something I want to willingly experience.
      I haven't personally been pressured into drinking, but I have gotten the occasional "oh, why not?" like I've suddenly grown a second head when I decline an offer.
      Like, sorry if I made the moment awkward (apparently), but I'm not going to consume something I don't want to just to socially fit-in.

    Elder gen z here. I agree with everything you said. We want to work but we want to be paid for our work. We do not want to be told to come in an hour early to “set up” for our shift and not get paid for it. We do not want to get calls about work once we have clocked out and are home. We want a good work/life balance. We saw what our parents and older siblings had to go through and we don’t want that. Life is short and we want to enjoy it. Yes we will work because we need money but we do not want to sacrifice our mental well-being for money. We sell our labor and because we are valuing that labor we are told we are told we are lazy and entitled.

    I feel like back when my parents'grandparents entered the workforce, going above and beyond and putting in that extra effort meant they would be recognized and given a raise or a promotion. For us that's just not true. Since it's an "expected" behavior they won't reward it, especially because all the higher up positions are already filled by boomers/gen x and they aren't willing to give it up. I used to go above and beyond but when I realized that it didn't matter and the people who needed to notice didn't, I stopped.
    The work experience thing sucks so bad too. I graduated college during covid, so I had to take a retail job right out of college (even though I literally have an engineering degree) because that's all I can find. Eventually I got a job that was slightly more relevant? but all employers see when I apply for the types of jobs that I LITERALLY went to school for is that I'm 27 with no relevant work experience so they don't want me. it's so frustrating.

      I definitely feel you. Those of us millennials who graduated at the height of the Great Recession had a similar impact experience. I’d like to say it gets better, but for a lot of us it never did and we were never able to secure jobs in our fields. Best thing I can recommend is trying to forge your own path somehow. Whether that’s going Freelance or trying the entrepreneur route. I managed to carve out a place in my field as a consultant, though it’s not at all what I imagined my career would be at this point.

      I got told at my previous job that I in spite of having a really productive year and exceeding all my goals, I could not get "exceeds expectations" on my performance review (and the 5% raise that comes with it) because I got "exceeds expectations" last year. So best they could give me was "meets expectations" and a 2.5% raise - so not even beating inflation at that point. Like why even try or care if there's no incentive??
      I left that job and am on to a different one now that hopefully has better growth potential but I'm incredibly jaded at this point so I'm not holding my breath. I'm a younger millennial (born 95) but I very much align with Gen Z in all matters related to the workplace.

      I think you should give extra effort for your own career. When you apply to other jobs you want to have a good track record of work, that makes you competitive.

      I had the same experience after graduating, and that was before covid. I couldn't get anything in my field because they all wanted experience. Even the internships I applied to wanted experience, which is why I couldn't land one. They complain that no one "wants to work" but when someone shows up asking to work they slam the door in their face. I've been treated like garbage and i won't forget it.

    8:51 work from home jobs are great for mothers The US is currently experiencing a decline in birth rates continuing the work from home would be a great way to encourage that because you could work and take care of your kids. Much easier.

      THIS! im a single mother with very strict and limited availability beyond my control, so a work from home job would open up many more opportunities for me. The problem is a lot of ones you CAN find is also not legit. Cold calling scammy places, MLMs, ghost listings or falsely stating work from home when it’s in person/hybrid. These job sites need to be held accountable too for allowing these types of listings :(

    I can say from experience that if a job treats you well, the productivity goes up exponentially. I had a job that treated us like actual people with lives outside of work. Lots of PTO and generally very accepting of your circumstances. I actually felt bad for leaving but they were still very kind to me as i was doing my final 2 weeks. It isnt that we "dont want to work", its that we also want to be able to enjoy our lives without constantly worrying about work.

    I went above and beyond in my last workplace, I was rewarded with a few cent raise and the expectation to always be like that even when this job tried to kill me and I quit due to my health. I have other friends who are desperate for jobs and often don't get responses due to the dumb reality of fake job outings, places that are like ya we are hiring but are not really even though they are understaffed.

    I’ll speak for most gen Z by saying this. If corporations don’t give a damn about you then why should you give a damn about them? That’s basically the entire argument. If companies only see you as a transactional asset then why should you see them any differently? Makes no sense

    In interviews I’ve gotten concerns about my job hopping. My job hopping started due to an unexpected layoff- I would have stayed with the company had that not happened and it led to me finding positions that were part time or didn’t quite fit. It’s nice when interviewers give me a chance to explain, but most of the time they don’t & I’m aware it reads as not having loyalty. I think people who haven’t gone through layoffs don’t realize the continuous impact it has on someone’s life.

    It’s funny because I agree. As a 20 year old I have no loyalty to my workplace despite the good pay, no desire to do “extra” work, and I PLAN on quitting before I reach the 2 year point. My job also doesn’t allow raises so there is literally no reason to stay there when I find another job who will pay more for my experience.

    I’m applying to jobs right now because my current role is overworking me with a promise of a better title and pay… it’s been 3 years. Millennial here and I’m over it. I’m joining the Gen Zrs on this one. It’s not “quiet quitting” it’s working my wage and hours and not a minute more 👏🏽

    Finding a job out college was hard and the amount of times ive been berated by my own family for “not doing enough” annoyed me. The amount of times ive gotten job rejections was weighing me down. The degree I persued was Bachelor of Arts/Graphic Design/Illustration.
    But 3 months later after graduating I found a “boring” job that uses my design skills and developed printing skills. I have somewhat utilized my design skills on some products that needed to be sent to this major health company.

    The generalizations of a whole generation needs to end. I started working at 16 I’m still at the same job now for two years. I’ve only called out twice, only been late twice, and only posted a shift once. It’s going to be the same thing though when gen z’s kids start working.

    I’m disabled and wanna work in marine biology. I am hoping the team effort will be a lifesaver. If I don’t take breaks, if I don’t take care of myself, I can’t work, my body will force me into my bed.

      Disabled, currently in college. I've chosen my current track based on the fact that I can't stand for long periods of time. It sucks, and I can't even work a fast food or retail job because bosses are opposed to employees having a damn chair

    Millennial here. This is giving me flashbacks to the early 2010s when older generations said the exact same bullshit about us.
    Also, I love how not wanting to be abused at work is considered "entitled". As annoying I can find Gen Z at times, I'm glad they're calling out corporatist bullshit. Just hope they remember that fervor as their workplace influence grows.

    As a younger Gen-z working in Corporate at the top of the food chain in my org I do not aspire to work like this forever and fight for promotions. I’m working enough to get to point to invest and not have to rely on my main job. This shit is exhausting and can’t wait until the older crowd gets out the way so we can make some changes tbh

    I got walked out of a final interview with the head guy despite glowing reviews from the people who interviewed me up to that point as soon as he saw me. My heart sank when I saw his expression; it was clear he thought young woman = unqualified.
    I had taken my limited PTO off for that interview, only to be dismissed because of my age.
    And then I got laid off a month later. On the plus side, the xoomer (border boomer/gen x)?who contributed to my layoff now is severely overworked since I was doing her job and mine, and now it’s going to be the other way around~

    4:31 I don’t think Gen Z is lazy at all, I think we provided them a different set of skill sets and our infrastructure of work didn’t keep up with them. Whether that be due to cost or the refusal of the older generation not wanting to assimilate to the technology that exists, it’s just not benefiting anyone right now. Gen Z has the potential to make big changes, if people give them a real chance.

    My favorite is trying to get a job in the food industry after getting a bachelors degree in it and then you can't even do the "if you don't have a certain requirement just apply." Indeed will reject you application immediately just because you don't have a certificate that is an additional cost to you. Like I get wanting to hire someone with a food safe/servsafe certificate (without the company themselves paying for it like they used to), but to ask for the certificate for an entry level job?? Like you paying 1.50 above minimum wage for a regular job position but it's required to have a certificate? Usually only managers need those certificates and this isn't looking like manager pay.

      Have you tried applying to the company directly? People recommended I don’t apply through LinkedIn, but use it to find jobs and then see if the company has their own postings to apply through.

      Yeah I had that problem while in Utah. I went to McDonald’s and they said I had to have a food service certificate, I’m originally from Mississippi and here that’s not a requirement. Went to the local homeless resources center and they set me up with a appointment at one of their centers to fill it out and they were willing to pay for it

    Young millennial here, I get along better with the Gen Zs. We talk about how we are not about working extra when the company doesn’t hire extra people. Recently one of my coworkers left and the other is on maternity leave. We went down from 4 to 2 and my team is also supposed to help a new department. I told my boss, I’ll work as much as I can for the band with that I have but at what point do we say “this is too much” to the VP and she looked at me and said “well I can’t say no”. (She’s a core millennial (late 30s)) I asked “why not? It’s just two of us with double the work from when we were 4? She looked blanked like she was short circuiting. I told her, they need to hire a temp worker or something. I am not going to overwork myself. 💯
