Lots of recent commentary from both progressives and conservatives has focused on the question of who the ‘elite’ are, and how, if at all, the make-up of the ruling elite has changed. For some, it’s the shady fund-managers and asset owners who bankroll populist movements. For others, it’s a new class of professional technocrats who’ve imbibed the latest ideas about gender and identity. Either way, few would deny that our current crop of elites seem singularly unprepared for the challenges and crises of the 21st Century. Why is this?

I am a primary school governor in south London. Two weeks ago I was one of three governors that undertook the headteacher's annual appraisal. This was overseen by a consultant from the local authority. This gentleman was also executive headteacher at six primary schools and a consultant for OFSTED added to his role at the local council. He was very clearly a member of the elite liberal, jobs for the boys, class. When I pressed him as to why he effectively had eight jobs, each paid for by the taxpayer, he took offense. Frankly, I couldn't care less if he was offended. This is a shameful reflection of the crony culture that we have permitted to take root.
The. UK is now rotten to the very core.
At least the toffs had codes of honour and public spirit, as shown by holocaust of public school boys in 1914-18. These self-appointed elites don't even like the country, much less sacrifice for it. Happy new year Sir. God bless from Australia.

Crony culture: the ‘signifiers’ change over time (e.g. combovers vs Green hair, monocles vs hipster spectacles, formal attire vs organic cotton togs from Muji; a folded copy of The Times in the briefcase vs the Guardian in the pannier bag, the Jaguar vs the £3k electric bike)…. But the Cronies themselves remain the same.

Too many people went to University. It created way too many expectations for well paid careers for people with abilities and intellects who probably shouldn’t have careers in the knowledge industries. Those people didn’t smash the elites as we thought they would but hollowed out industry, crafts, services as professions and demanded jobs where there shouldn’t be jobs. Too many administrators, too many managers, too much HR! This is where woke bubbles, in the mid-wits of administration.

I done City and Guilds at school at the age of 14-16 in 1984 because I was useless at maths, passed with distinction or merit on each module of it, I really enjoyed it.
Agree. I went to uni in the 70’s before Blair destroyed education by watering it down - now made up of so many useless degrees, hence the making up non jobs in admin, HR etc.
Agreed. I've just resigned from my job at the Home Office after 18 years because I couldn't stand it any longer. There are so many middle managers in the Civil Service which don't need to be there.
And now graduates come out of uni and can’t even write a decent report. I started registered training in the 70 s . The academic entry requirements were actually higher than the degree today. Beggars belief ! You’ve always had to have half a brain to be a competent RN. The same thing has happened in medicine. I am most worried about what has happened to the English legal system and the judiciary and its failure to protect free speech, Christianity, family, and children.
I think I have worked that out, you will notice the elite marry, divorce less if at all and keep their children educated... traditional basically.. what they are doing is imposing the opposite on everyone else to consolidate and keep their power and wealth

It's crazy how to me this all seems like common sense yet watching somebody speak on a podium about such topics in such a fair and eloquent manner feels revolutionary.

This is thoroughly depressing, and I don't even live in the UK. My condolences to all of you who are not members of this self-appointed elite class.
I migrated to Australia some 30+ years ago but try to visit every couple of years and keep abreast of current affairs. Every visit things are worse than the previous visit. It’s more noticeable when you’ve been away. I have watched over the years as successive governments have made mistake after mistake. I hoped I was wrong.😑

I would certainly say that critical race theory originated here because it reflects US history more than British history. The Stonewall riot in New York in 1969 was a catalyst for the gay rights movement, so, yes, I think we may be guilty as charged.
I was also reflecting on why Trump is so popular - he's a billionaire who actually likes our working class. The mainstream media tends to miss that.

Currently typing a transcript of this for personal future reference ... Matthew as incisive & succinct as always ... seeing this play out (with slight cultural variation) in New Zealand ... particularly an increasingly obvious scapegoating (via putative amends for colonisation) of poorer, working & lower-middle whites & asians into a degraded second class citizenship (health, housing, attempts to disenfranchise) ... and, if anything, an even more tightly-knit - almost incestuous - Bourgeois Woke elite (especially obvious in the media) than in the UK. As a traditional social democrat from a very bright but lower income family, it's clear to me the Left has been captured & fundamentally subverted by a New Graduate Elite that, despite all the ostentatious moral posturing, is in fact both self-serving & deeply authoritarian.

No he's got something wrong. These new elites may be graduates, and from once esteemed universities, but they are not 'highly educated', they are highly indoctrinated. They are not interested in facts and reasoning, but ideology and spurious morality. This oppositional class can be defined as "Antiwhite". They don't look down on the uneducated, it is the white population in general they despise. The social values of these elites is about white erasure, demographically, culturally, historically, politically and legally.

Personally I think our biggest problem is alienation and the lack of common social institutions. We need to either start going back to church or create our own rival cultural & social institutions. You simply cannot organise politically unless you have some sort of social infrastructure. This is why the Muslims punch above their weight. They have a common set of values and they meet every friday etc. This is why one of the more successful reactionary groups was the EDL (whatever your criticisms of them may be) because they were formed out of football fan networks. There are many clever & well read traditionalists and reactionaries out there. But until every town has a hub through which to organise festivals, meetups and learning oppurtunities we will simply be bulldosed by those who have the resources.
I think the main issues are the relentless attack on men and boys, particularly white males, and also the gyncocentrism of society where feelings and subjective truth trump facts and objective truth (ie: the 'patriarchy).

Such an important lecture. The younger generation coming through remind me of the brown-shirts of Germany in the 1930s and the Red Guards in China of the 1960-70s. Not sure whether it’s frightening or sad.
My old Primary school in East London was Selwyn infants and junior school. Look it up. It was an amazing Edwardian building with real character.
The school knocked it down and built what looks like a skip. There was a charity (that aims to preserve old beautiful buildings) that worked out that repairing the old beautiful school would cost 1/3rd of knocking it down and building the skip but they did it anyway.
No doubt the work of this new elite. They seek to destroy Britain its history and that includes its architecture.
Shameful people. A revolution needs to come straight back at them and stop this nonsense.

What piqued my interest is the relationship between elites and public debt. Elites are adept at turning a ‘red’ on the public balance sheet into a ‘black’ in their own finances. Matthew referred to educational programs pushing trendy social issues, what I call the ‘Grievance Industrial Complex’. I have seen this in action; they are paid for by borrowed public money and staffed by New Elite graduates helping themselves to public money. Elites are able to act contrary to the social mores of the majority of this country. These grifters are prevalent throughout the public sector.
Elite success at this transfer of money is truly remarkable. It is cynical, is monumentally wasteful, has achieved nothing and is completely unaccountable.
So many instances of privatised profit socialised debt, the 2008 disaster being the most high profile.
But the elite most responsible for doing that are the financial elite - they've foisted at least a trillion pounds of debt onto the taxpayer in the last 15 years. And Goodwin says nothing about them. The public managerial types are just useful idiots for economic globalisation and they will be jettisoned very easily if necessary. Getting rid of them is still going to leave us with the actual elite owning everything

I largely agree with Matthew. The world is more divided, divisive, polarized than when I was young. When I went to graduate school I discovered that my were colleagues intolerant, closed minded and zealots.
And I suspect that they would have considered themselves to be the clever ones, whose opinions must be correct because of academic qualifications they held. I have worked as a lecturer and a teacher in a career which started in 1994 and I have come across some remarkable intolerance and heard people being mocked for putting forward perfectly sane arguments which happen not to be held by many members of these ‘new elites’. Conversations with colleagues during and afte the Brexit vote, or during the era of UKIP, and around the 2019 election showed me, very clearly, that these elites, who consider themselves to be SO virtuous and SO obviously correct are incredibly removed from the majority. It is frankly worrying.

You can see that many remoaners try and claim economic facts as reality even though often they aren't, rather than admit that in reallity it is a (possibly embarrassing and indefensible) very selfish and personal issue that secures their flag to the EU mast. How many remoaners will actually tell you the teal reason that they wanted to remain? How many remainers (different subdivision) will tell you the same? Very few I'll bet, and yet despite often not even understanding their own side of the arguement they are very much prone to telling the other side that they know how exactly they think.
Whether it be identity politics, white saviourism, gender gymnastics or any other of its forms, it seems that the deep root seems to lie in a deep beleif that they somehow know better than those who live the experience, even though they often use that as an excuse for not accepting the majority view ie that's not my lived experience trumps anything else as long it is the correct experience.
Many if not most seem to come from the chattering classes rather than than the doing professions where deviation from reality can cause injury or cost lives. If you debank or doxx the livelihood out of someone , there is no blood on the streets, so to them no real harm is done but they have made their sacrifice to the gods of PC. It could explain why they seem to like offshoring their enforcement to the likes of antifa or hate not hope (sic). It keeps their consciounces clean and detached from their actions. The cognitive dissonance caused by their denial of even basic science and reallity, eg men are men and women are women, is perhaps why they are so keen on pushing the whole everyone has mental health issues narrative.
When you boil it down this way, it seems more than ever that we are growing a self styled elite of sociopaths.

I remember a study that demonstrated that children evidence more stress in the presence of people of another race than their own race. People are born with a natural suspicion of the outsider. You can suppress it, but people's attitudes are the aggregate of their experience. In Australia, for example, the average experience of White, Asian and other minorities with aboriginal people is quite negative. The government affects knowing better than its people, and tells them that the problem is themselves, not the aboriginals. That the aboriginal propensity for violence and intimidation is because of White attitudes, and not for the true reason: Aboriginals, a Stone Age tribal people always behaved in such a primitive manner.

I'm someone who previously drifted ever further into the progressive sphere. University educated. Lived in London. Socially liberal. But, then I realised - due to upbringing and material circumstances - I had more in common with small-c conservatives (particularly working class ones) than I cared to admit. And, that their concerns had not only become more relevant and important over time. But, also demonstrated more care for the fellow citizens of Britain, than the supposed "caring" of progressive circles (if anything, these people carry a reckless carelessness, masked by fake-virtue, rigid groupthink, and reactionary behaviour).
A good example of this the way they talk about multiculturalism on social media. "I went to a fabulous Turkish restaurant today, before buying fabulous pastries from my Polish supermarket, before being driven home by a fabulous Afghan Uber driver". I.e. it's all good, as long as these migrants are fetching your coffee. "Where would I be, without my poorly paid rickshaw driver and Man Friday, to fetch me life's luxuries".
A lot of progressives are self-hating. Hatred of their working class upbringing. Hatred of a small town upbringing. It's this pursuit of self-elevation that causes them to run from ideas of nationalism, civic pride, and duty. But, now more than ever, those ideas are becoming critical to preserving what we have.
How about we stop turning fashions, trends and ideologies into laws!

How is progressive actually progressive when it’s in reality regressive?
A pretty fair summation of the issues, yet of course it is important to also understand that this has happened all but simultaneously all over the Western World, and especially the English-speaking parts of it. This should give us a clue as to who and what is orchestrating it. IMO it is where other radical, colonizing, political, economic, and dare I say religious ideologies have come from over the last 200 years such as fascism, socialism, and communism. This place is London, and even more specifically Hampstead in London. Frankfurt in Germany has also had its influence as well as French, Roman, and other Germanic ones, but the head of the snake is firmly established within the British Empire.
The Empire upon which the Sun has still not set in either the physical or metaphorical sense. The military power of the snake had long since become the USA, and the Financial power largely remained in The City of London. Its diplomatic, intellectual, and organizational power was created with the UN, along with the RIIA, CFR, and many similar exclusive societies, foundations, and so-called think tanks. The religious power previously residing in Rome has largely been replaced by the propagation of these various aforementioned ideologies, however, Rome still has an important role when it comes to the more spiritually based religions. How much of this control structure was systematically put together as some kind of master plan and how much evolved more freely and then clubbed together is debatable, but it is there all the same and for all to see, for all those who make the slightest effort to look for it.
The main drivers of this control system were largely the people that controlled it many years previously collectively known as The Ruling class which soon adopted what is known today as the oligarchical class to their Slave and Country Owning club. Nowadays most of the heavy lifting is done by our Oligarchs and their industrial and financial corporations as most of the Old Ruling class are now as they often have been in the past as interbred as randy amoebas and as thick as bricks. Their main skill sets are stealing all of the rich spoils after murdering, raping, and torturing vast numbers of people. They still enjoy these long-established family traits especially the last one, but accountancy, economics, banking, or even counting are not really their kind of thing. They usually employ people from a certain ethnicity, for that sort of grubby and relatively boring stuff.
Most of them just retired to their Pacific Islands or country palaces and put their most favored bankers in charge of their perfectly vast amounts of accumulated land and wealth.
Where countries such as China and Russia fit into this vast control system is a subject of hot debate, but of course fit in, in some way they must. When and how they will be forced more obviously down the snake's throat, remains to be seen, but it will happen one way and day or another. IMO there has only ever been just one system pulling the strings, how hard and how many strings is again highly debatable. The British Snake is both larger and fatter than it has ever been, whatever it may seem, and whatever the snake claims or leads the world to believe. Suffice it to say that The British Snake is no longer particularly British as it was not even 150 years ago, but it still has Made in Britain stamped along its extremely slimy body.
The UK becoming the first country to apparently leave the EU is rather ironic, to say the least, but not in any way unexpected, as The Special Relationship is far more special than many believe, but many end up finding out to their great cost. The original idea of a United Europe under the control of the British and US financial system was formulated by a small group of British aristocratic Intellectuals in Hampstead London, not Paris, Brussels, or Frankfurt.
