Be careful crouching in a helix, the last time I did it my wife turned the power on and when I got out it was 1967.
😂
I would love to go back to 1967... very happy memories.....
I did say, don’t try this at home!
😁 Now I’m definitely building a helix ... I knew there had to be a way out of this mess ...
September 5, 1967 was my first day of kindergarten. (September 4 was Labor Day.)
Its the intellectual honesty that sets this channel apart. Its not all roses and bonbons. When there is a mistake, which happens to all of us, it isn't hidden, rather it is offered up for learning. Well done Charlie!
That’s very kind of you to say so. As they say, honesty is the best policy. Regards Charlie
I wasn't inclined to watch this at first but as my interest in the technical side gradually climbed, I decided to watch it. To a degree, an excellent video, can be appreciated on different levels.
Thanks Chris, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting. Regards Charlie
Wow, you really are my fav Model Railway channel. I am a retired contractor and building insp for HUD, (for anyone that doesnt reconize the name it is for the, Dept of Housing and Urban Development out of Washington DC USA), and I simply cannot get enough of your videos. I could listen to you and watch you build for hours which is great because that is exactly what I have been doing! You truly are FANTASTIC! Well done my friend!
What a heart warming comment Joseph. Stay safe. Regards Charlie
Fantastic piece of construction. Trains will look great snaking their way up the hill.
I’m so pleased that you approve of the plan Rob. Regards Charlie
Congratulations on the perseverance it took to solve the problem. You took the blows and saw it through and did it your way. See you in a couple of weeks.
Thanks Joe, and thanks for your support too. Regards Charlie
There is definitely a lot of skill and engineering involved in model railways that people don't realise. Your set up is impressive Charlie, I enjoy videos as I am learning a lot
I’m so pleased that you enjoy the channel Dom.
The lesson has been learned - make sure the first turn of the helix is "perfect" before mucking about with "adjustments" to the track or mods to the locos. Thank you again Charlie.
These things are only obvious obvious with hindsight David
@@ChadwickModelRailway How true Charlie. I've built two helices on two layouts and each time I forgot this lesson to my utter anguish.
In the words of Project Binky - "make the noise"! Nice new toy Charlie and it's good that it showed up the error in the helix before you got any further on. And possibly consigned what turned out to be perfectly good locos to the scrap heap. It has probably paid for itself already in that regard.
Having seen the amount of engineering you've put into this helix I now realise mine was doomed to failure from the start, but we live and learn! Cheers
Thanks Davie, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it.
at 7:10, suddenly I had a vision of you popping out of the middle of the helix and singing 'Happy Birthday, Mr President'. I cannot unsee this.
I dread to think what I’m wearing Michael.
Oh Michael, did you have to put that image into my head?
Those sweeping curves will look great, another brilliant video Charlie, 👍👍
Thanks Simon, you’re too kind
The curves look so nice now...thanks for sharing 👍👍👍
I’m so pleased that you like them JO. Regards Charlie
Charlie - I recently got back into model trains after many years away; because my 9 year old son is showing interest in it. Thank you for all of these videos - they have refreshed my brain better than any other out there. While our layout will be 4'x8' and DC only, a ton of your tips and how to information will be utilized. Thank you again from someone across the pond.
Thanks Chris, I’m so pleased that you found the video is interesting and it will be of use to your son. Regards Charlie
Looks like a good milestone for the new levels. Top work!
Thanks Stevie I’m so pleased you found it interesting
Excellent solution & construction. Nifty little device, the digital spirit level 👍
Thanks Rob, I’m pleased that you found it interesting.
Do like watching a British twist to the hobby on the other side of the pond🇨🇦.thanks Charlie. Lockdown here too.We been making locomotives out of the scrap box.🤪 Cheers.
Yes railway modelling brings a little light relief to these somewhat troubling times mate. Stay safe, regards Charlie
@@ChadwickModelRailway 🚂✌
Yes, it's great to see the progress you're making. Even if I'm behind with watching. 👍
I’m sure that you will soon catch up GS.
Absolutely fantastic to see the helix connected and trains running onto the main layout. Really looking forward to the next video now
Thanks Paul, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it and it’s great to have you on board. Regards Charlie
I love your Brush Falcon.
I have a sound decoder waiting in the wings for it Jeff. Regards Charlie
The link line to the helix looks great with the sweeping curve. With the terminus station on the left and the through line to the helix disappearing into a tunnel on the right, it reminds me of Birmingham Moor Street...
I’m so pleased that you like the plan Mark. Regards Charlie
Hi Charlie glad you got it sorted LOOKING GREAT Charlie glad you are winning with is very intricate project awesome .great video again.
Thanks Tony, but it’s been an uphill struggle!
@@ChadwickModelRailway no pun intended lol
Hi Charlie, that looked pretty easy... Lots of fiddling I am sure but you make it look so easy.. Looking good, cheers, Chris
I think sometimes, we always believe things are going to be harder than they really are. Regards Charlie
Great start to the weekend! Cheers Charlie!
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Gary. Regards Charlie
Well done, Charlie! Although my gag reflex did kick in when you climbed inside the helix. I'm so clumsy and cack-handed if I did that I would impale my skull on a coach bolt and smash through the helix onto the floor!
When I worked for a well-known DIY store, our resident house-broken chippie used to call MDF "Value Reformed Ham" lol
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it robotmonkey. Stay safe. Regards Charlie
I enjoy your work! Thank you!
Thanks mate, regards Charlie
Comming along nicely Charlie Barnstaple Station is going to look 👍
I have my fingers crossed Mark. Regards Charlie
Afternoon Charlie. That is impressive now 👍🏻 Inky saw Falcon once at Cardiff Canton shed in the 70s. Really good powerful lovely locomotive. Have a nice weekend cheers as always Stevie 😎
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Steve. Sadly, in its contract falcon was forbidden to be preserved. What a disaster. Regards Charlie
Always a pleasure to watch your video's Charlie. When you stepped into the helix it reminded me of weeding in the garden with my back to Agave's... Owch! Your luck seems better than mine...
Life on the edge!
Wow, that's looking spectacular, great stuff. But, gosh, there weren't half a lot of ads during this episode.
I’m so sorry about the advertisements Tony. I had planned one mid role ad. However Google clearly had other ideas. My deepest apologies.
Charlie, congrats on the helix. Very nice job 👍
Thanks JFZ, I’m pleased that you enjoyed it.
glad to see you got it figured out
Thanks Tim, regards Charlie
I purchased that tool awhile ago and it was a life saver for me. Good stuff I am glad that it worked out for you.
It was truly a game changer mate. Regards Charlie
charley i am really enjoying watching how you go about building your layout i also watch a aussie called Jason wood and evirate junction love all of your builds graham
Thanks Graham, I’m pleased that you enjoy the channel.
Hello Charlie - I enjoyed this video - the curves from the helix are super. The driver of Falcon is waiting for a clear road and I'm waiting to hear those 2 Maybach engines lift those coaches up the gradient! Well done!
Thanks Kev, I just need to fit that sound decoder.
The sweeping track from the helix to the viaduct looks fantastic. Well done Charlie 👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks Kevin, you’re too kind mate.
Hurrah. It’s Friday. I’ve finally finished work for the day and get to sit back with a cup of coffee and get my weekly fix of Charlie and the amazing Chadwick. It’s somewhat reminiscent of finishing school on a Friday and sitting down at 5 past 5 to watch Crackerjack!
Great efforts and work there Charlie - nice run to/from the helix.
Thanks David, you’re too kind.
Hello Charlie. Success well done. The mini level makes a difference in this height & carpentry format for the model railroad. Couplers are tricky due to their shanks sometimes annoying depending on the car body from the coaches. Well like the Chessie System old logo : "For Progress" your layout is working well I'm pleased , as for the half inch plywood or 1/4 inch hopefully you'll get a good quality soon. I know this lockdown is a headache. I'm backed up here in the states with a lot of other wood related & plastic projects. You're doing a fantastic job, happy modeling on the Chadwick & I'll keep watching as always.👏👏👏👏🚞🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃
I’m so pleased that you found it interesting Harold. Stay safe mate, regards Charlie
What a fantastic result Charlie! Those Hornby Pullmans make or break for most locos with their pick up arrangements behaving like handbrakes, fantastic to see the stock conquer the grade. I'm not looking forward to doing my 4 lane helix shortly but the digital level is certainly the way forward. Will look fantastic once the scenery is complete!
I do hope that you’re not using first, second, third and fourth radius curves. Regards Charlie
@@ChadwickModelRailway No not at all Charlie! What a terrifying thought 😂 My monstrosity will be using a minimum internal radius of 1600mm to 1800mm. Jason Woods "The escarpment" layout has set the standard for helix builds, so I think the bar has been set. Regards, Ben.
Hi, Glad you found the flaw in the helix. 2% with this radius is still a challenge for the locos but obvious better. Success with the build ! Greetings.
Yes we got there in the end mate. Regards Charlie
Amazing brilliance ~ well done!
Thanks Christopher you’re too kind, regards Charlie
Thanks Charlie. An engineering marvel, Brunel would be proud!
Only if it lasts the test of time Warren.
Good old Isambard would indeed have appreciated the thoroughness behind this design👍🏻
Fantastic video to watch grand bit of work
Thanks Ashly, regards Charlie
what a tremendous amount of work which i have to say is looking fantastic ,quite an epic setup this is turning into ,brilliant stuff ,hope your knee is appreciative ..great update many thanks,
Thanks skyfall, I’m so pleased that you’re enjoying the journey.
Another great video Charlie, fantastic progress, yes that level is just the berries, just keep safe and well, lockdown can be a trying time, hopefully we don't have to travel down that road again, thanks from down under
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Jed. It’s been a rough journey, regards Charlie
Thanks Charlie for the wonderful video. Keep well
You’re most welcome Jade. Regards Charlie
Fantastic to see the helix issue was solved in the end! That area will look great with those nice sweeping long curves 😎
Thanks Tim, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the video. Regards Charlie
Great video Charlie, I love your progress. Good luck and good health
Thanks mate and the same to you. Regards Charlie
Looking good Charlie....love your videos ...keep them coming

Morning Charlie,
Nice job again, coming along nicely 👍
Thanks Mick, and so pleased that you approve. Regards Charlie
"that'll be the wife then".... makes a change from "that'll be the phone then" :) - Charlie, again a fantastic and informative video, delivered in an entertaining way. This helix is taking Chadwick to new heights.... (I'll get my coat :) )
Malcolm has left the station ... ;-)
@@jyvben1520 Nice one :-)
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it gentlemen. Regards Charlie
Hi Charlie, brilliant video as usual, I bought one of those percentage levels from Aldi, it also has an arm that levers out from the top which actually shows the gradient which was very helpful as I built my gradients. They all seem to work so far, so fingers crossed as I lay track up my last gradient all is good! Always like an interruption from Mrs Chadwick, Mrs Exehaven seems to be like a moth to a light bulb as soon as I start filming, anyway beautiful sweeping curves and I mean the layout! Cheers for now Charlie John
What a heartwarming comment John. I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it and that your wife also interrupts your filming! Regards Charlie
Looking great Charlie
Thanks Bob, regards Charlie
The digital spirit level looks like a very useful device. I think your layout will look really exciting with the line doing down to the tunnel, as well as the incline up to Barnstable Station.
Thanks Alan, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it.
Excellent, the helix is a piece of art in itself, I wouldn't cover it up too much.
A fair point mate.
Thank you for your inspiration
Your most welcome Scott.
Whoa! I got too get one of those digital levels now!
The link is in the "Show More" tab buddy.
Hi Charlie, finding it difficult to think of any higher praise for your modelling, photography and presentation skills, this is absolutely gold dust, better than some of the rubbish on the BBC. Since we are all getting nostalgic this week, I think you would have been great on Blue Peter, although I haven’t seen any sticky back plastic on the layout. As some of the other people have said, don’t put yourself out too much on the new schedule, if anything, the lockdown is teaching us all to be patient.
Well done Charlie.
What a heartwarming comment Paul. You’re too kind, take care, regards Charlie
Hello from Canada and I always enjoy your videos. Awesome, glad to see that you figured out the helix issues, it was hard to watch the last few times when they couldn't make it to the top. I know you've put a lot of work and thought into that helix.
I’m so pleased that you found it interesting Michael. Fortunately we got there in the end, regards Charlie
I don't know what is says about me! But one of the most absorbing videos on TH-cam I have watched!! A genuine sense of anticipation at seeing it working, and total admiration at your skills from the point of view of design execution and carpentry.
One thing, have you given thought as to making the front side of the board wide enough for the necessary scenery as the track curves out the top of the helix, as it would seem to me, that quite a bit of woodworking will need to be done to create at least the frame for the 'nearside' of the cutting as the track disappears into the tunnel. If you follow what I'm saying that is.
However given the enormous challenge you have given yourself when you embarked on this new plan for your layout, this issue will I'm sure not present any significant issues.
When your wife said 'that looks dangerous' I wonder if she is referring to the dangerous enormity of the project your undertaking! 😉
What a great comment Keith. The trackbed for the track as it comes off the Helix is by no means the finished item. I can easily make it wider or more narrow to suit the landscape that I will build. I do hope this helps, regards Charlie
Hi Charlie, another great video, makes a helix very tempting.
I would be tempted to take the scenery part way round the top level of the helix, you would get the benefit of those lovely sweeping curves, and the trains would disapear around the corner before entering into the tunnel.
Keep up the good work
Paul
Thanks for your views Paul, much appreciated. Regards Charlie
I just cracked up with the description of MDF!
It’s true .... honestly!
Looks great Charlie !
Thanks Bert, regards Charlie
Nice vid.
All of this is a good reminder that planning the helix is crucial. The rise must be enough to clear the track below, allowing for the thickness of roadbed, upon completion of the first revolution. The radius needed to do that can be calculated as the rise divided by the quantity of the decimal of the grade percent, pi, and 2.
Ex: for an N scale helix rising 2.75" each revolution, the radius curve for a 1% grade is 2.75/(.01*3.14*2). About 44".
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head Donald, it’s no walk in the park. I now have various items of rolling stock to modify so they can survive the pressures of the Helix.
Charlie, excellent as usual.
Thanks mate I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it. Regards Charlie
I agree Charlie, the sweeping curves coming off the Helix look quite attractive!
The care you've taken getting the gradients as 'slight' as possible will certainly pay off in reliable running in future.
Thanks Brian, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting. I must confess I am rather pleased with those curves too.Regards Charlie
Isn't it amazing how some solid data can reveal the source of a problem and also explain the poor results from previous attempts at a solution? Well done, Charilie! You have beautifully illustrated a situation that happens countless times in industry (and unfortunately government, as well). Guess you won't need a helper district after all. Cheers from Wisconsin.
Thanks Andrew, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the video and the lessons and I have learned. Regards Charlie
Brilliant as usual Charlie. When you climbed in the helix I had visions of you popping out of a birthday cake. Perhaps something you did when you were younger?
Yes it could’ve been a real surprise surprise moment! Regards Charlie
Well done, Charlie. That inclinometer is a great piece of equipment! Can't wait for your next episode! Thanks!
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it Pat. Stay safe. Regards Charlie
a shim at the right incline and a cheap level should do the trick, unless you want to know what the incline was.
A great update Charlie. When I was watching your previous video on getting stock up, something did seem off, but I didn't mention it only because i couldn't figure out quite what was making me think that. The moment you laid the digital level on it it was almost a "ah!" Moment. Glad you figured it out though and things seem to be working well now.
Yes it was a lightbulb moment for me too. Regards Charlie
You’re certainly getting somewhere!! The helix is a great little thing on the layout. I wish you the very best of luck with it.
Thanks, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it.
@@ChadwickModelRailway Seeing a layout like yours is a great pleasure. To watch the trains go on it will be an even greater pleasure.
Another great video. Your production is always top notch and I really like the videos where you actually build something and get the trains rolling on the new structure. That helix is a work of art!
Thanks Rick, you’re too kind.
I like the affiliated links in the description, who supplied your track screws? I especially like the link to the fire extinguisher and first aid kit. I notice though there isn't a link to the florist. I'm sure Mrs C must deserve some flowers for the tea, coffee and any sustenance provided during the day.
No, but I know that DCC Train Automation do stock them.
Hi Charlie,
The Prototype mountain railroads that had many challenges and needed steep grades, (like many railroads in Colorado with 3% - 3.5% and higher grades), were trying to gain as much rise as possible in the limited space they had available to meet the demand. They had a method of applying grades. They used to at the beginning of the grade have a steeper incline while much of the train was still on more level ground and then they would ease the grade to the ruling grade. This would gain them a few extra feet of rise without bogging down the engine or causing driver slippage.
Example: They might have a 3.5% grade for the first part of the grade (while the trailing freight cars were still on more level ground) and then they would ease the grade to a lesser grade, like say 3%, when all the train was now on the incline. This way they picked up extra rise and could reduce the ruling grade up the incline.
I have done this on one part of my HO mountain railroad where I have steep grades, which comes in handy if you're trying to get that extra 1/2" of rise in the space you have to make the climb.
Just thought I'd share that info. We can learn a lot from the prototype and it is interesting how they solved problems. All the best Charlie.
Philip
What a very interesting comment Phillip. I’ve never really considered that option. Regards Charlie
@@ChadwickModelRailway Yes, I understand Charlie. Neither did I think of that until I learned from researching the prototype mountain railroads. (It's actually fun researching and always good to learn how a real railroad solved problems). Using the prototypical approach, is a method that can come in handy for some and be very useful when trying to solve a grade/space problem. All the best from New Jersey.

The human eye is a weird thing right enough. Perfectly laid, dead straight tracks can look 𝑠𝑜 good but there's something about long, sweeping curves that are really pleasing on the eye. For some reason, it doesn't seem to be as effective on a single track, or maybe that's just me. I always think that a single track looks best with curves all over the place; seems to be quite 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒚𝒑𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 too.
It's hard to tell how the new bit is going to look; we'll get a better idea when the rising gradient to Barnstaple gets installed but, so far, it's looking great Charlie.👍👌😁
I’m so pleased that you agree that the progress seems to be going well. We shall keep our fingers crossed, regards Charlie
Its all coming along nicely and im learning quite a few tricks from it as it progresses especially with the electrics of it all, i do love that sweeping curve and im running it through my head now to fit something similar on to my embryonic railway. Keep up the good work Charlie 👍
I’m so pleased that you found it interesting Leslie. Regards Charlie
once again, excellent video. everything working well,
At last Oliver. Regards Charlie

I thought we'd lost you in that Helix Charlie
Like a giant birthday cake!
Well done Charlie, Great to see you beating the helix gradient gremlins.
Blimey, they are difficult blighters.
Cheers Charlie you probablay just had a senior moment you get more of them the older you get lol!
Sadly, that's true Will.
Charlie nice to see the helix connected and the dreaded dead section is no more. Vertical curve is the correct terminology in track design and is used to connect together two consecutive gradients the are either convex (hog) or concave (sag)
Great info Gary.
A lot of work Charlie. Really enjoying the updates. If you are struggling to get plywood try B&Q (If you have one). Our local branch are doing home delivery for a very small charge. Keep safe.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Davis.
Good to see the Health & Safety dept. is monitoring the work force closely. The layout is progressing nicely. It's interesting how a very small dimensional error at the start of a project going unnoticed causes a problem later on. You have to be so careful. Well done for sorting it out Charlie, but It's all fun at the end of the day isn't it?... 👍
Hi David, I’m not sure it’s fun but so reassuring when we sort out our little problems! Stay safe, regards Charlie
I absolutely love your videos and have been binge watching them in my spare time this lockdown. Thank You
I’m so pleased that you found them useful.
That level seems like a must have, thanks for the video
It was a lifesaver for me Joe.
Hi Charlie,
For those who want a cheaper option instead of investing in an inclinometer, you can down load one if you have a smart phone. I tried it and it works pretty much the same in accuracy.
Cheers,
Michael.
Thanks Michael, great tip. Regards Charlie
Wonderful videos Charlie.
Thanks Carlos, you’re too kind.
Good evening Charlie. I have been really liking your vid’s and finding them really useful for ideas, I’m sorry to here that you are not able to go out and get wood items you need for the layout, I work in a timber store and still have to go to work so if you need anything you can let me know and I could get it for you, we do also offer a delivery services and we can courier items as well if needed.
Thanks David but it looks like I’m sorted. Regards Charlie.
