Luxor, Egypt ➖ I've travelled to a fair few places around the world, having both good and bad experiences. But I tell you, when it comes to Luxor in Egypt, this city easily takes the number one spot for the most annoying touts. As soon as I stepped foot out of the taxi to Luxor Temple, immediately the touts began flooding in.
I made the mistake of entertaining a conversation with these touts because once you're roped in, it's pretty difficult to get set free as shown multiple times throughout this video.
Look, I understand these people are just trying to make a living during tough times and I'm more than happy to fund the local economy for enjoyable activities. But when you're being blatantly annoying, following me around, you ain't getting my money, simple as that. Hence, when I found a boatman that wasn't pushy and annoying like the rest of them I gave him a very generous tip.
Nonetheless, Luxor is a cool city, plenty of things to do and it is safe. But just be aware of how annoying these touts are be prepared to be stern in your decision making.

I just left Cairo two days ago and I know now that you need to give a firm “NO” and not smile and be cheeky with them. Saying no and then asking how much and other questions when you know you’re not interested in what they’re selling is a big mistake. They will never leave you alone. Say no thank you and good bye. Don’t allow them to walk along with you.

Say it in Arabic, and they will take it most of the time, "no" is just stupid since you go into another country that speaks another language because the whole world does not resolve around English.

I just visited Egypt a few months ago and my best advice is to be a jerk. I was similar to Luke at first where I was friendly but firm and would be followed literally everywhere I went. When I started ignoring them or had headphones in they simply got more aggressive and hostile. Snearing at me, cussing me out, grabbing me, begging me, etc. There are a million different ways they’ll try to scam you or hustle you. The worst scam I got was negotiating a camel ride at the Giza Pyramids for 150 Egyptian Pounds, when I gave them my card they charged 150 USD and it turned into a huge headache. Don’t ever take their first or second price and don’t be hesitant to google prices in front of them.
Biggest red flags: they ask you where you’re from, they offer you Egyptian/Government price, ask for a tip, they ask to show you their shop, they say you look Egyptian, just come have a look, say don’t worry about the price, offer you something for free.

Don't engage in small talk with them and ask questions... if you do, that gives them confidence to carry on with their naughty business. Because you're nice and well mannered, you tend to care and engage.. As soon as you see them coming disengage at all levels. Had exactly the same experience as you about 15 years ago and it hasn't changed.. However, it was all kind of worth it for the faluca journey and the horse ride I had into the desert. I had to pay off the guy to let me take the horse there by myself but was so worth it.. The rest was truly bad though, and the tourist temple "remains" were underwhelming. A place to go only one time ever, or maybe not at all... :(

i was going to write the same comment.. i like to watch videos discovering new places , but started to worry about Luke and the fun turned out to be stressful .. these ancient sites weren't built by Egyptians , because the first 6 dynasty rulers were canaanites from Lebanon , that is why real Egyptians went ont smash the noses if their sphynx as a symbol of humiliation whent they kicked out the first pharaohs .. from Lebanon- Canaan.. and Manetho the oldest and most important Egyptian historian who listed the names of all the Egyptians kings who ruled Egypt , feigned to ignore the first 6 non egytian dynasty rulers as well as the Hyksos ( later on , who were the canaanites that the Egyptians called Hyksos) ..
Byblos in Lebanon was the economic and religious capital for the Egyptians for many centuries .. they used to pray in the temple of astrate in byblos where we found more than 3000 obleysks dedicated from Egyptian kings and citizens honoring Astrate of Lebanon... but it is like generalized not to dig for the truth mostly for political reasons .

I went to Egypt in 2011. I had a great time, but the number of people just constantly coming over to you gets old. You do have to say No firmly. 1 thing I did was rent a driver. My hotel coordinated it and they got me a driver for everyday I was there in every city I went to. it was cheap and had no problems just tipped the driver at the end of the day. They drove and stayed at the location while I walked or I would call and tell them to pick me up at a location I walked to.Also they know all the back ways and where to take you to really see the site not the tourist bus stuff. I went to Cairo, Aswan, Luxor, Alexandria. I want to go back again just to go to the new Museum in Cairo.
