    Hey guys, thanks for doing my pick!!!… so you didn’t quite get Black Dog the first time around but I promise you play it a couple more times, and it likely will end up on your playlist!… Zeppelin has such a wide variety of styles and yeah you probably should do Since I’ve been loving you from Madison Square Garden 1973 next. I was at that show July 29, 1973 so two days from now is the 50th anniversary!… the other pick I would actually have for you next is the studio version of Going to California so you can hear their beautiful all acoustic side as well. In folklore some black dogs are considered to be evil in nature (which I think is bs).
      Like the black lab that lived next door to David Berkowitz (the Son of Sam) and he said the dog supposedly talked to him and told him to kill people.
      If you look inside of Led Zeppelin's 4th album with the song "Black Dog" on it and you open up the album and reflect the picture of the one half of the mountain of rocks up to a mirror and make it reflect to make a picture of a whole mountain you'll see what looks like a demon dogs face on the rocks.
      You can actually see this on the internet for yourself. Zeppelin is notorious for using subliminal messaging and subliminal pictures on their albums like in the song stairway to heaven he sings:
      "She's buying a stairway to heaven"
      That is a subliminal message that you can buy your way to heaven but you cannot you have to repent.

    It was named after a black dog that was hanging around the entrance to the studio. You can't really get the groove, because I believe the guitar riff is in 5/4 time, but the drums are in 4/4, that means the beats sync every twenty notes

    • @edwardcoit9748
      @edwardcoit9748 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is also a time change in the middle of the riff. It is easy to play wrong. A little difficult the correct way. With a drummer that gets it right the song works. An average drummer, forget it. And then of course good luck finding a singer.

      @charlesmarshall8046 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bc2198 Incorrect. That’s a black cat. The title of this song has nothing to do with the lyric, they chose it as a joke because a black dog was hanging around the studio. And he’s right about the timing, they deliberately chose a rhythm you can’t dance to.

    Black Dog is just one of the many types of songs LZ does. It's fun to watch them perform it in concert, but it's not a sit down and listen song especially when your not that familiar with their music. They are known for their unique song construction, unexpected tempo changes, amazing guitar riffs, powerful drum rolls, and Robert Plant's vocals. Led Zeppelin are also great live performers, and since you have only reacted to their recordings, it would be nice to watch your reactions to an actual live song. As they never play their songs the same way when they play live, it is important to find the right performance. I think you would really enjoy their song Kashmir live at Knebworth 1979 official video. This has all the elements I mentioned and everything you said was missing. It is an epic performance where you can see and hear how good this band is. A second choice in my opinion would be Since I've Been Loving You live at MSG 1973 official video or Stairway to Heaven from the same concert. Lastly I would like to mention that Jimmy Page the guitarist was a highly sought after studio musician prior to starting Led Zeppelin, and he played guitar and harmonica on some of Tom Jones early songs.

You get Page's quality engineering skills and masterful arrangement without the improvisation and experimentation to confuse first time listeners. Once you've heard the studio version then you can go to the live which is essentially messing around with the original idea. Their live stuff is legendary but only makes sense AFTRE listening to the studio version of their songs to digest the initial theme of the song.

    Black Dog isn’t a song you dance to. It’s more of a “WAKE UP AND PAY ATTENTION” kinda song. John Paul Jones is/was known for using very complex time signatures and for changing time and tempo in the middle of the song. Stairway To Heaven increases tempo 2 or 3 times during the song. It’s something that’s just not done and that most musicians can’t cope with, but Led Zeppelin isn’t most musicians. Given your education, you might be interested to know that Jimmy Page did a lot of the production and engineering. He double and triple tracked a lot of his guitar parts, which is why it often sounds like multiple guitars are involved. But it’s just Jimmy. Check out What Is And What Should Never Be and Over The Hills And Far Away. You’ll be amazed 😊❤

  • @stevedahlberg8680
    @stevedahlberg8680 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Black Dog is filled with oddball time signatures and was notoriously difficult to play, and so of course it's hard to move to in a traditional way.
    But they actually sell it really well, especially because they keep coming back to that straight-8 which suddenly feels so comforting and John Bonham is really making the bell on that ride cymbal ring to signal how solid and relatable that straight section is and that's your chance to traditionally rock out for a little bit.
    But if you relax and take in the overall feel of it, this song is actually a great rock dance song all the way through. People my age have all danced to it, but I have seen some really sexy dancing to this thing, oh my.
    And I noticed that Ms B&B really lit up in those straight 8 sections. I agree with her also that I really love his voice in this, and the provocative lyrics of course. And also, great point about how different it is on a first listen.

    The members of Led Zeppelin were all state of the art players and could do a lot of things that other bands couldn't. In Black Dog they are purposely combining different time signatures between drums and guitar; it creates tension, then explodes when they meet in the chorus. Structually (and lyrically) this is classic blues, which was foundation of many of Zep's best tracks (before they took it to the next level). As others noted, it's not a simple composition; you need to listen to it a few times, but eventually you'll realize it as one of the classic rock songs of all time. Jimmy Page's solo at the end is fire.

    Looking forward to more from LZ. What gets me about the band is all their songs sound unique. That’s really difficult to pull off but they deliver.

      You’ll have to pick another winner. I don’t do much more than enjoy the videos and leave an occasional comment. Love your work! I get a kick out of watching folks listen to the older tunes for the first time.

    Jimmy Page was the sorcerer.
    Plant was the apprentice.
    Bonzo was the backbone.
    Jonsey fleshed it out.
    Young kids do not know how this
    blistered the musical industry.
    Dig... and dig deeper.

    Most drummers play off the bass guitarist. John Bonham plays off Jimmy Page. Jimmy is playing 12/4 time while Bonzo is pounding 4/4 time. Find another band that can do that.

    Glad I found your channel, you seems to have an honest interest in music, and also knowledge about it. It's not fair to say that you've "lived under a rock" beacuse you haven't heard of this or that!
    I grow up listen to 60-70's pop rock and love it even today. I listen to different type of music today beacuse I'm interested(of course not everything)
    For an example, I've never listen to rapmusic or hiphop and know nothing about it. Why? I have not had the interest in that music!
    Can't put a finger on a certain song and I maybe heard of a handful artists. Of course the reason must be that I've lived under a rock😊
    Nooo, it's about interest! Maybe some day I start listening to hiphop for better understanding?
    Keep up your good work, you seems to be nice guys with a real interest for music.
    Thanks / BR from Sweden

    I'm not sure who recommended this song, but probably not the best choice at this point in your journey. Instead, I would highly recommend the studio version of "Since I've Been loving You" off of the album Led Zeppelin III.

    The reason you can’t catch the groove is because the drummer is playing in 4/4, but the guitar and bass are playing in 3/4, so that gives it a weird “hitch” at some points of the song. It was largely improvised in the studio, off the main guitar riff

    I can help you understand this song better. It’s one of the best stoner songs ever written.
    I won’t go into the specifics but others here will vouch for me that it’s one of the best songs ever to listen to high on weed.
    Try reading the lyrics a couple of times, light one up, so to speak, and listen to the song again.
    It’s just a weird, really weird thing about this song.

  • @Deshman919
    @Deshman919 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very good, you caught the fact that the drums and guitar are playing in two different time signatures. Which is insanely difficult to make sound right. They do it on other songs as well

  • @kdm71291
    @kdm71291 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    With its sequence of time signatures and pauses for vocal soloing, it’s definitely not meant to be danced to…without a continuous groove, the only thing it is for is enjoyment! ☺️

    this defined "head banging" rock and roll when I was about 16 or so; we LOVED it in the early 1970s!! remember, most all early British rockers were HEAVILY influenced by Black American Blues singers which is where the line "I don't know but I been told, big leg woman ain't got no soul" came from. Yes, it was a concert song; it was not for "ballad" listening. Robert Plant is one of the top 5 "screamers" of all time!!

    Not only that they used I’d probably still do played on the radio all the time but now everybody with you to Pandora Spotify that don’t listen to the radio so you just don’t hear it on the radio and get to know song he would normally not hear back in the day You were here that was crazy. They have other options unless you had an eight track player because that player or CD player we didn’t have digital back there so you guys got too many options today as well there’s so much crap out my opinion though 💯

    Two of the influences for this song are Muddy Waters' 1968 album Electric Mud and Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac song OH Well. I suggest listening to OH Well it has the same call and response with the vocals and the music.
