    NANO TEXTURE UPDATE!
please note that I may have spoken too soon with regards to “not getting Nano”
It might actually be great for artists specifically - I placed my order for it and will be sharing a video about it”nano vs paperlike” in about 3-4 weeks when it ships. I had a chance to test it at the Apple Store yesterday and really enjoyed the experience

Finally the one review I was waiting for, just as I was getting sick of all the useless crap those tech review channels are making. Unlike you, they are totally not the target audience as these devices are only good for them to be reviewed over and over again

Yea I honestly cringe when I hear tech youtubers say:
“i don’t know who this is for”, or
“it’s still just an iPad, no where as useful as a Mac”, or
the worst one “still can’t video edit on this thing”
Like seriously, is it not obvious that the target audience is digital artists and paperless writers?

@@Ken-dm5xti mean for that price? Those things are valid af. You could literally draw from an ipad released 5 yrs ago. I would be on your side if they are both priced relatively close. But it seems like you just wanted someone to kiss Apple's ass. You and the op's bias is so strong your isheep ass is showing.

@@Ken-dm5xtWell, they’re not wrong about "It’s still just an iPad, no where as useful as a Mac". iPadOS as of far is atrocious and a glorified iPhoneOS but bigger. I don’t own a computer other than the 12.9 iPad Pro pre-M1 model, so let me tell you about my struggles. There are many essential things for me that you cannot do on iPadOS like formatting your own USB drives, flash drives and USB accessories that suddenly stop working after you update the OS, a Files app that is very rudimentary, apps and downloads not running in the background or when the screen is off…etc.
Something has to change with the iPad Pro and iPadOS is the biggest stinking culprit. I mean it fulfills its promises as a professional design/art tool for me, but iPadOS lacks professionally in basic OS tasks that my cheap $150 android phone can do.
Other than that, I agree with everything else you said.

I’m old enough to recall the initial release of the iPad and thinking, FINALLY a device selfishly invented just for Artists, NO ONE ELSE! Good ol’ Steve Jobs! 🙌🏾
It was a dream come true for Art Narcissists like me!
I rolled my eyes every time TH-camrs called it a toy for not having features that THEY wanted 🙄
LOL my thought was always, “who cares?” Don’t buy it and move on! These things are for ARTISTS and your GRANDMA, who don’t need all the extra crap!
I was actually shocked when Apple finally upgraded to a decent filing system.
I was having so much fun with the art apps, that I really didn’t really know what I was missing until it arrived.
I thought maybe the so-called “regular users“ were right. Perhaps IPads aren’t really all they’re cracked up to be 🧐
But now, with the release of the new Apple Pencil and ZBrush, I’m DOUBING down!
If you don’t like iPads, WHO CARES, take a hike!
Grab whatever tablet that you DO like from whatever company, and call it a day 🤷🏾

So refreshing to see reviewers that really uses the ipad to its potential review the iPad pro instead of other tech reviewers that always says "this is not a pro machine","apple should put macos in the ipad", like they don't get what is the target audience of this product.

    • @hdhdhhehe6709

Professional artists overwhelmingly work in the Adobe software suite, and therefore are not the target audience for iPad Pro. Wacom tablets remain the solution for people actually working in the fields of animation, 3D modeling, graphic design, etc. As long as Apple divides the iPad and Mac ecosystems, and further subdivides the iPad ecosystem between base and "pro" users, the Apple Pencil will never take off as a viable alternative to Wacom. The consumer base of professional artists is extremely niche. Apple just wants to monopolize that space for itself, which is why they intentionally setup so many barriers to entry.

As an artist, I totally agree about the nano texture… not a fan. But unlike you, I always go for the 11” iPad Pro. Not only because I travel a lot, but because it’s just easier to hold when sketching while standing. To me it’s a true tablet. And even when I’m using it on a table, the 11” screen is plenty enough for me. But it’s all good. 👍 Whichever size iPad an artist uses, they’re amazing tools to create on!

You are proof in the pudding - the value I got from your video from an artist perspective was pretty significant beyond the main tech reviewers I've seen. I had no idea they kept the tap feature on the pencil, let alone the fact that you can trigger it from a distance! That also makes it the perfect presentation device for instructors on-site who are projecting their display. I still think they should redesign the old pencil to have these updates, its just so significant. Lots of people who aren't going to buy a new ipad for 3 years would definitely consider upgrading the pen imo. Not sure If I'll skip the M4 entirely, but I'm definitely sticking with my M2. I hope they make apple pencil hover OS-wide like a desktop cursor in WWDC. Now THAT would truly make it a must have feature.

I think the nano vs. glossy decision for artists isn't as straightforward as Adam claimed. Yes, you don't want to double-dip with diffusion by adding a matte cover on top of a matte screen, but not everybody wants the tactile grittyness of a paperlike - some just want a bit more minimalist line stability while drawing and gliding a hand over the screen.
For me I much prefer the nanotexture drawing experience so far compared to any screen protector I've ever tried (including paperlike and astropad). The loss to color saturation is also pretty marginal compared to my M2 glossy, and is worth it to have less ambient lighting glare indoors.

Agreed. Not everyone likes the coarse feel of paper like covers. But that’s his opinion for himself. For example,e, there must be well over a dozen major sets of pencils from major art pencils manufacturers. I’ve found that each of those I’ve used over the years feel somewhat different. I would tend to pick up the ones I like a bit better, mist of the time. But other people will prefer the ones I like least. That’s why all of these companies exist.

Great video. I’ve come to the conclusion that the average “tech reviewer” on TH-cam is a very basic individual who rarely had a professional career other than TH-cam. They’re not professional journalists, artists, engineers or designers of anything other than TH-cam. So they frequently look to each other for content and point of views. It’s an echo chamber. As a viewer it’s always refreshing to hear from artist and other professionals about how THEY use the tech. Great video.

    @dameanvil 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

00:05 😃 The reviewer, a professional artist, is excited to review the 2024 M4 iPad Pro, highlighting his extensive experience and unbiased perspective.
00:28 📱 The entry-level iPad Pro model with 256GB storage and 8GB RAM is deemed sufficiently powerful for professional use.
01:14 📏 The iPad Pro's thinness is notable, making it feel futuristic, although it can be confusing when selecting the correct iPad from a stand.
02:11 🎨 The new tandem OLED screen offers higher contrast, color accuracy, and lower power consumption compared to the previous mini-LED screen.
04:17 🔋 Improved battery life and exceptional image quality make the new display a significant upgrade, though older models remain highly capable.
05:17 🎨 Artists should avoid Nano texture screens to maintain the best image quality and color fidelity.
06:28 ⌨ The new Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro is similar to Apple's Magic Keyboard, with improved stability but some back-heavy issues.
08:12 🧲 Magnet alignment for the new iPad Pro can be tricky due to internal changes, affecting stand compatibility.
09:25 ✏ The Apple Pencil Pro introduces a haptic pinch feature, enhancing functionality and user experience for professional artists.
13:02 🖌 The haptic pinch feature works well with grips and can be used in various artist grips, providing versatility in usage.
15:08 🎨 The haptic pinch is a press and hold function, ideal for tasks like using an eyedropper tool, improving workflow efficiency.

Apparently the OLED option has the potential burn-in issue: the appearance of permanent ghost images after some time (like every OLED on earth.. also QD-OLEDs (but not QLED (like in some Huion's tablets), those are fine, different tech, no burn-in)) and the "remedies" not always work, neither applicable with every workflow.... and the high PWM on the M4 iPad Pro produces a screen flicker not perceptible by everyone (but when recorded for video on youtube it can be super obvious/obnoxious) but which for quite some people is a serious problem. not sure how healthy that is even for people who don't "perceive" it. In general I avoid high PWM issues in any monitor I purchase (even more than I avoid OLED). To what degree these two things will show up... time will tell.
But while I'm more of a desktop PC based artist (with Eizo monitors, best in the world - even compared to Apple's- for color and accuracy in general) I am considering the new 13 inches iPad AIR for 'on the go' painting - not really for full outdoor, of course, that's the advantage of the OLED option, due to the gazillion of nits- as the new M2 AIR still uses the lovely LED (IPS), has the M2, which is plenty for painting, no real need for M4, supports the new Pencil Pro, and has the 13 inches option now (finally not only in Pro). But pricey... 928$ when adding the Pencil Pro and minimal specs. And 11" is too tiny for painting. Still dreaming of some Android tablet company, or Apple, to come up with a 17" version with pen support.

Me, I hope Apple decides for once to produce a 17 inches (or bigger) ipad. Yep, no company is doing it, but even more reason for going for it (on-brand, with Apple). It would be a tad better for illustration, comics, design, photography, etc. I would make the swap from Samsung tablets (although my main tool is/will always be the desktop).

The pinch feature of the pro pencil didnt activate consistently, maybe thats me not being familiar w it but i found myself immediately ignoring it entirely and instead just tapping the screen icons directly. It feels like a capacitive sensor backed up by the rumble motor to simulate 'interaction', id much rather a mechanical switch that clicks.

I ordered the new Ipad Air with the pencil pro the day of their event. So far i cannot be happy enough and working as concept artist professionally with it, i would HIGHLY recommend it to any artists. The Air can do everything the pro can with "mostly" no differences that you will notice in any of your work and if you need more then you can use an actual computer to do the heavy HEAVY lifting.
Aside from saving hundreds of dollars the Air can do everything you will ever need it to. The greatest thing out of this whole new line for me personally is the pen, the pen features have been a GAME CHANGER with the haptic feedback and squeeze has been so damn nice to have not only physically but mentally. If you dont want to fork out the full price for the pro, highly suggest going for the new air.

As for performance, for my work, the M2 with hover is essential, but if you focus primarily on line art then it might not be as important
The 2018 might do the job just fine - I’d only upgrade if it’s not a reliable enough iPad for your current needs

Great video, and thanks for sharing! Professional artist here as well. As an alternative to the M4 Pro people should seriously look at the M2 Ipad Air with Apple Pencil Pro support. M2 is plenty powerful for most users. The new pencil is a game changer IMO, but an OLED display is a nice to have not necessarily a must have. Our team upgraded to 2 of the new Airs as opposed to a previous generation of Ipad Pro. So far very stoked, just patiently waiting for Adobe Fresco and Procreate to release their updates!🤙 Happy drawing!

Apple fan boys: OMG look how thin it is!!
Artists: I have made art with paper and CRT monitors... I don't care how thin it is. I mean Wacom Cintiqs are still considered the holy grail of digital art tech and as big as it is it ONLY let's you draw using software that needs to be connected to a PC. Apple Users and Apple Artists are entirely different demographics and it is funny to see how each side takes a stand on one feature versus another. I also use EL Display hub to use my M1 iPad Pro as a display tablet for my PC's Photoshop, just because. Eventhough I also own a 20" XP-Pen Pro.

Yeah i'm not buying the "we had to move the inside parts and now the pencil is solely compatible with the newest devices" story, definitely done deliberately.
I'm enjoying my M2 and was excited for a pencil upgrade but this is just stupid, literally the same bs as with the pencil hover feature being just softwarelocked only to be usable on m2's, now they just took it a step further.

I was going to get the 1tb version for the extra Ram. I'm glad that I watched your video because it's extremely expensive if you go with that model. Like $3,000 if you live in Canada like I do. And you hardly get much of a upgrade in performance. I would only spend that if they made it bigger than 13 in which is still kind of small for an art display. I want at least 16. Samsung basically has a 16 but I've tried their stuff before. It doesn't feel as nice as iPad.

      @AdamDuffArt  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

You don’t want to use Nano Texture AND a drawing screen protector at the same time - that doubles up the diffusion layers
Nano only impacts light diffusion but it doesn’t offer a paper like texture for drawing - so I don’t recommend it unless you aren’t someone planning on drawing on your iPad

@@AdamDuffArt I will say, I popped into the apple store just to A/B test the glossy screen and nano-texture display, and I actually found it to be notably better for drawing, to the point I preferred it to a paperlike screen protector.
It's incredibly subjective on what's better and I'd NOT blanket recommend it, it's a lot less toothy and feels quite soft vs a paperlike screen protector. Reminds me of a traditional drawing tablet type texture you'd get on an intuos!
It DOES suck that it's only available on 1TB and up models though, not really excited to shovel out £2200 just for that, although it might mean that there'll be some newer, more exciting features available!

Maybe if you’re working on pro work for a studio it’s not worth it but as a freelance artist selling your own work I doubt you will need that level of pinpoint blacks.

Thank you so much for this review. I’ve decided it’s better to get the standard screen over nano-texture because I prefer the double OLED colors. I can just put on a magnetic screen protector for drawing and then remove it when I’m not drawing and I want to do other things like media consumption. I already hold on to my tech devices for a long time because tech isn’t cheap (for me it’s usually 6+ years). I’m planning on getting this iPad M4 and will be holding on to it for many years. I do animation and 3D work so I will opt for the higher storage for the higher RAM for animation and 3D modeling workflow on the iPad just in case. 1 and 2TB options have more RAM, which may be good for being able to do more layers/tracks for animation, higher resolution for drawing and being able to achieve more details on a 3D model (aka more polygons).

I received mine last Thursday to replace my M1 iPad Pro. It's much smoother for drawing at a high resolution in Procreate and the pencil is a nice update. The haptics actually makes the pencil double-tap to switch between brush and eraser useful. I was always hitting it by accident before and not knowing that I switched between them. One good thing to know is that the people at apple are apparently very into stationary and fountain pens. So the reason the apple pencil is such a good stylus is because it's designed by NERDS who wants it to resemble a good balanced pencil and not a thick weird wacom stylus. I do still wished the apple pencil had actual buttons, tactility is such a underrated feature our human fingers have - they are so sensitive and useful, we have such control over telling what is a click vs what is a squish. I really am not a fan of squeezing to click - that just screams arthritis speedrun to me. I just want a clicky clicky button on the apple pencil that I can feel and see.

Hm. All other artists reviewers appear to love the nanotextured glass as well as prefer it over any screen protector. I do however see the upside of being able to 1, protect the machine from damage, and 2, swap texture if you do not like it. But to me, the bigger question is concerning the OS-limitations a machine like this entails over everything I am used to, which can simply do pretty much anything I ask of it.
I've owned both a Surface Pro 2013 and a Wacom Mobile Studio Pro 16", and neither of those machines did it for me. Clunky, heavy, unoptimized, etc. The Wacom is by far the least stable machine I have ever owned, constantly shutting off for no apparent reason, a scanner/camera with some form of hardware malfunction out of the box, attrocious support that didn't want to fix it, etc, and I've just had it. All I want is a slick machine that can live in my bag without being noticed. And maybe this is it, maybe I'll hate it as soon as I can't do that thing I need in a specific moment. Uncertain.

I have a question I havent seen answered anywhere, but I need to explain myself.
The M2 iPad pro had hover but at the cost of accuracy and the lines are more wobbly, especially if you use a screen protector.
This is because the electromagnetic mesh in the M2 iPad pro its "overclocked" for lack of a better word. Meaning it produces a stronger field so it can detect the pencil at a distance, and that produces noise in the pen signal. It varies from model to model, and I even had to return my first M2 iPad because the lines were so wobbly even without screen protector. I've read so many people talking about that issue online.
The M1 iPad actually 'has' a hover feature, you can activate in the accessibility settings, its just useless for artists since the pencil must have very very close for it to detect, that's because the EM field is not too strong because its not necessary, as a result the lines were very smooth and nice.
As many I sold my M1 iPad and went for the M2 because of the hover feature, but I really dislike the drawing experience on my M2 iPad from handwriting to actually drawing. I'm not a fan of software stabilization so I always leave it at 0 so that's not a solution for me. I'm actually thinking of selling this one and get an M1 again.
Is that issue solved in the M4?
